I have eaten many lunches here and always satiated by authentic Greek flavors. Not Americanized at all, the real deal. The past month I have needed to cater a few events. Need I say as a hostess I appreciated the silk glove treatment. Tina, the owner and I chatted as the needs for each dinner were a bit different and together we personalized each evening. Was looking for a place close by St. Joe after an appointment. Sooooooo glad we chose Athens on 86th!! Being from a small town about 2 hours away, finding good Greek food is a challenge. This is not good Greek food, it is AMAZING Greek food! I had the lunch special Grouper in mixed greens and my Husband had Feta stuffed meatballs with Taziki sauce. We walked in and the place is empty. They ask if we have a reservation. Nope. They look like we frazzled them. Remember the place is empty. Hostess had attitude and the service was only saved by who I imagine is the lead waiter. Our waitress was average at best. We were on our way home from Lafayette, and were jonesin' for some Greek food when this place came up on a yelp search, so we decided to check it out. For an independent (non-franchise) place, the decor is extremely good. The food is not cheap, but it is of good quality - you get what you pay for. The service is beyond compare, and our server looked like a younger, handsomer version of George Michael (I'm a guy, and I'm straight, so don't get any ideas). I had the Lamb kebab, the ladies had the Gyros. Both are excellent, and we left pleasantly replete, but not so gorged that we would fall asleep on the way home.- which was good, as I was driving. We have had lunch and dinner there but most often we stick to the gyro special. Their gyro meat is juicy, tasty and not oily. we thought prices to be high compared to other greek restaurants. The eggplant appetizer had so much garlic we could not eat it. The Mousaka was very rich. Good but my own preference is for less bechamel and more of the bottom layers of pototao, eggplant and ground beef. The side potatoes were very dry. The grouper was perfect at one end and undercooked at the other. The rice nice and fluffy. At a lower price point it would have been ok but with $60 for 2 people without alcohol it should have been better. We stopped at this nice little family-owned restaurant at lunchtime last week. We arrived shortly after opening time, but there were already a few families seated. For our first visit, we opted for classics with familiar flavors. We ordered the hummus appetizer, pastichio, chicken souvlaki, and lahanodolmades (cabbage rolls). Dinner came with Greek salad (you can opt for soup instead), green beans, and potatoes or rice. We also ordered the avgolemono (lemon orzo soup). Dinner also included a toasted soft white bread. Everything was delicious and disappeared before we remembered to take pictures. The salad was not overly vinegary, the meats were tender and well seasoned, and the pastichio had a nice creaminess to the sauce. The hummus came with soft warm pita that had been toasted on the bottom - delicious! We will definitely be back to try new items, including the grouper special. read more

I'm disappointed beyond belief. Two things I wish I didn't lie about in person- a bad haircut and a terrible piece of lamb. I've come back to Athens on 86th TWICE in an effort to rekindle the magic that happened with the off the menu lamb filet (see earlier review) I enjoyed on my first dinner. That option hasn't been available since and the suggested alternatives have been either overcooked or baked like a cafeteria Salisbury steak. I filled up on rice because that was the only edible food on my $30 plate. The second star comes from a place of kindness; our waiter was very polite to my daughter. I won't go back. read more

Love this family run Greek restaurant with great food and atmosphere! Everything tastes fresh and delicious. The big difference to me is the spices they use. The wait staff is excellent and everyone is very helpful. This last Friday they even had live music which I was told happens once every one to two months but they usually have a dancer on Fridays. Many of their dishes can be made with regular or vegetarian and either way is excellent. Highly recommend it! If you love Greek food, you must try it! read more

Frankly, the food quality was extremely subpar considering the price point. The spanakopita looked like a very thin long pop tart. Very cheaply and commercially made. For almost $9 I expected more quality than that. I've gotten better spanakopita at non Greek restaurants. The gyro meat was dry. Very unbusy and service was very slow. Waiters were too busy talking. I had to actually carry my own bill/payment back inside because I got tired of waiting for the waiter to come and get it. Used to have better food and better service. Never again. read more

One of my favorite places on Indy's north side! I'm a sucker for Mediterranean food, and the feta and olive plate is the perfect way to begin a meal. I used to order the moussaka as an entree (which is definitely good), but decided a few times ago to try the sea bass. I hit the jackpot; I cannot imagine anything tastier! It is slightly crisp on the outside, lush on the inside, flavored with lemon and butter. A bit pricey, but so worth it! The service is also good. While I am not a super frequent customer (due to not being in that area too often), the waiter remembered our party. He even gave my sister and I a free piece of baklava on Easter! Have you ever been to a restaurant and think "the food alone speaks for itself?" This is that place. I promise you there isn't a thing on this menu that you won't like. We've gone for lunch on numerous occasions and they are incredibly polite and attentive. I usually get the grilled chicken sandwich which is basically the same marinade but a large chunk of chicken served on a pita. I order it with onions, feta and tzatziki. Firey feta dip is out of this world. If you haven't eaten here you're truly missing out. read more

The hummus at Athens far outpaces any that I've had at any other Greek or Mediterranean resto in Indy. It's kind of pricey the small portion they serve, but it's worth it. The Greek salad was also quite good, but was a bit too saturated with dressing. We shared the "Taste of Greece" veggie plate (about $16) and everything was tasty. It doesn't quite match Santorini's veggie platter, but it comes close. The fact that the hummus and the salad were so delicious and the house wines quite drinkable puts it on even keel. Went to Athens on a Friday night. Had a 7:00 reservation but did not need it for a Friday.As someone else stated the place is quite dark. We both had the Gyro latter which was wonderful. It came with green beans and potatoes which needed a bit of seasoning. The meat was wonderful but,I would have like a whole pita. They cut up the pita into small pieces which is fine...I just like to stuff it in a shell. It was very tasty and will be back. Not the same atmosphere as Santorinis but,very good food. read more

We were coming back from the outlets and decided to try Santorini Greek Kitchen, but when we called to make a reservation the lady told us there was a 2 hour wait and the next reservation available would be at 8pm. No good (since we had 2 toddlers)! So we decided to try somewhere close to home and came upon Athens on 86th (from Yelp). HANDS DOWN one of the best greek I have ever had!!! We called to make a reservation as we spoke to a gentleman who told us he would save us a table even though 2 huge parties (one of which had 25 people) were coming in shortly. I believe this is a family business (and they are greek). We had the usual hummus and pita which were delicious. The waiter suggested the kiddos have the souvlaki (instead of the fried chicken tenders). Both of our picky toddlers LOVED it. My hubby and I tasted it and it was one of the most juiciest chicken we have ever had (and this was the kid's meal!). The hubby had been craving gyros for quite some time so he ordered that and I was craving fish so I had the salmon. Hubby LOVED his gyro. My salmon was maybe the tastiest I have ever had (and I'm a huge salmon lover). It was cooked to perfection and the outside was char-grilled. To top it off, they even had musicians playing (I think) greek music and that kept our toddlers entertained the entire time! I think my daughter fell in love with the guitarist.. or just his guitar! haha This is definitely a place for a romantic date (candle lighting and dim lights) or just for a quiet family evening! After a really crappy night at work, coming off a 25 hour work day with 3 hours of sleep...I was among the walking dead, with little patients. Athens on 86th was an absolute God-send! Everything about my meal was amazing...best Greek food I have had in a long while. Went during lunch, and the place had a few tables, so it was a nice quiet experience...just the overheard conversation from a table of Greek speaking patrons. Made the experience just that much better. They have a few outdoor tables, which would have been nice on this warm day, if I wasn't so irratble. Started off my meal with a much needed glass of malbec, and tea. I ordered the "Taste of Greece" veggie entree, which included a plethora of goodies...dolma, mousaka, spanikopita, etc. It was truely amazing. More than enough food for my sleep deprived body. Some of the bestGreek food I have ever eaten. But the worse service I have ever had. Once seated, we decided we just wanted water and a small meal. We decided to split a sample dish and maybe eat a desert. However, once the waiter took our order. He left and did not return to our table till he brought our food. He laid it on the table. Our waters were empty. We had to ask another server twice for water and a desert menu. Since our water walked by and looked toward our table only once. I decided no desert and no tip. Food was wonderful, especially the octopus appetizer, service was good ... BUT ... they refuse to honor our gift certificate. It was a $50 certificate purchased in 2017 that still had a small balance ($17) we had forgotten about. After checking with the owner, who was apparently in the back but did not bother to come out and explain it herself, the server told us that the gift certificate had 'expired.' Very poor public relations, they had our money, what does it matter when we use it? Unfortunately (because we really enjoyed the food) we won't be back anytime soon, if at all. This was some of the best Greek food we have had, and we are Greek so we do know about Greek dishes and how they're supposed to taste. I'd say this is authentic Greek food. The combination plate was plenty for both of us to share. It offered a nice variety of Greek items, all of which tasted good. The waitress was pleasant and the restaurant looked good too.........clean and nice decor. The prices seemed fair. I went here with my mom last Wednesday and this place does not disappoint! We were greeted promptly and right away from a very handsome young man who was also our server. The service was awesome, he asked us where would we prefer to sit, which made myself and my mom feel comfortable. He also took his time explaining specials of the day and answered our questions we had about the menu in a very informative and professional manner, which is greatly appreciated. And the menu is short, nice selection and simple; Front and back. On the inside of the restaurant is very nice, beautiful decors, historical pictures. Table covers, clean and white lol! The food now, oh my... Delicious! I can't go into a Greek or Mediterranean without getting Hummus first! Ohh, you can tell that it was homemade! The texture just right! Taste was nice and lemony lol and the pita bread, toasted to perfection with a hint of garlic! For my main course I had the Gyro pizza, mom's main course was the Classic Chicken Gyro, with lots of sauce and onions! We had plenty; We took some home so, I had yummy left overs for lunch at work the next day! We will have to go back and try their desserts! I will have to bring my 8 year old daughter as well because she loves lamb. The only unfortunate thing is that we don't live near the Northwest side of Indy. This is my favorite Greek restaurant! Every May, we come to Indy (from FL) for the 500 celebration with friends and family. My mom is 100% Albanian (food is very similar to Greek). My girlfriend and I pampered ourselves yesterday afternoon with foot massages, pedicures, and then a late lunch at Athens. The lemon chicken soup was like my Nana's! Brought back fond memories! The dolmades were so tender and delicious. So we convinced our husbands to go back there for dinner tonight. Again - everything was superb! Itzel, our waitress was attentive and helpful. Vlasis (who waited on us yesterday) remembered us and was very cordial! The belly dancer was very good & entertaining. Highly recommend! read more

The staff is so friendly, and the food is the best Greek in Indianapolis. Try a daily special. I once had the Eggplant Parmesan (or something similar) that was made especially for that day, and it was outstanding. Pita breads are made daily in the restaurant kitchen. Takeout is a joy. Enough food in one meal for two people. On Friday or Saturday, do get a reservation. During the week, there is plenty of room to dine for any size party. Highly recommend this place! read more

My boyfriend and I decided to go to Athens on 86th for our usual Greek food on our Friday night date night. We arrived around 7:45pm and were promptly greeted by the hostess and sat at a table with menus. We love this restaurant, often choosing it over Hella's Cafe for local Greek food on the Northside of Indianapolis. We may be thinking twice about options next time. Once we were seated, this was the last we saw of a staff member for the remainder of the time we allowed ourselves to wait. The restaurant was busy, but clearly well staffed. We had at least three different servers pass us and no one came by to bring us water, take our drink order, or any order for that matter. One of the servers was clearing dishes as we were patiently waiting for a server to at least greet us. Several other tables were seated, with water on the table before they even sat in their seats and we still hadn't been greeted by a server. Tables around us were getting checked on to make sure they're food was ok, but no one was checking to see if anyone had taken our order. I began to wonder if there was a big sign on my back which said, "Please ignore us," because they did a wonderful job of this. After waiting 20-25 minutes (that's how bad we wanted Greek food), we walked out and not one person said a word. If you're looking for service, you may want to rethink your choice before walking in the door. read more
