I love Greek food, but we haven't really found our go to place in Indy since Santorini closed. I had heard good things about Athens on 86th, and it's not far from our house, so we ventured out Saturday. From the outside, it's nothing special. It's in a strip mall. The inside is cute, kind of what you'd expect a little Greek restaurant to look like. It wasn't super crowded for a Saturday night. Let me start by saying I have high standards for Greek food. I've been to Greece, and the only place I've found that I truly love since my visit there is in Chicago. My all time favorite Greek dish is taramasalata. We ordered it and the waiter said they were out. I couldn't tell if they ran out or took it off the menu. Either way, I was sad. We opted for the saganaki instead. It was just ok. The portion was small and it wasn't as good as most places I've been. It stuck to the pan and was hard to cut. All entrees come with a Greek salad, but they let me substitute mine for the avgolemono soup. It was really disappointing, not flavorful at all. The Greek salad my husband got didn't have much feta and it only had one olive on it. What kind of Greek salad is that?! The entrees is what completely turned this place around for me. I ordered the gyro plate. It was delicious. The potatoes were great, as was the tzasiki sauce it came with. My husband ordered the pasticcio per my recommendation. It was some of the best I've ever had. If we go back, I'll probably order this! Overall, I'd come back for the entrees, but everything else fell a little short for me. read more

My daughter offered to treat me to dinner to celebrate my birthday and let me choose where to go. I have been craving Greek food and just started working at an office down the road, so I knew this was the spot! Admittedly, I haven't been here in years because I moved out of state for a while but recently moved back and I was excited to be able to come back for delicious Greek cuisine as well as to see what she thought about it, as it was her first time. Tina, the owner, greeted us as we were walking in and when she discovered that my daughter had never been here she offered to have the kitchen make us saganaki. My daughter had no idea what she was in For and I was so excited to see her eyes light up when they poured the vodka over the cheese and set the platter ablaze! The fresh squeezed lemon gave it just the right amount of tartness and we devoured the whole thing with gusto! Delicious!! I got the Mousaka with beef and she had the Pasta Thessaloniki with grilled chicken. Mine was heaven in my mouth!!!!! Well... what I really said has been edited for public eyes, but I can tell you I was more satisfied by this meal than have been by any other act in a very long time! The flavor profile of her pasta was the superb!! We started getting full but wanted to sample dessert so our server, who was also very friendly and attentive despite how busy she was, boxed and bagged our meals for us before we shared the baklava sundae. SO good!! Even the decaf coffee had great flavor! Every part of this visit impressed us from start to finish and we are already planning another visit and discussing who else we can tell about this amazing local gem! Best tasting Greek food in Indianapolis! This has been my go-to since they opened. They never disappoint!

I was in a rush looking for a place to grab food and ran across Athens on 86th. I've lived close by for years and could kick myself for not trying it out sooner. I walked in and felt like I was in an authentic Greek restaurant. It's so adorable and quaint inside and has some super cute outside seating that I'm excited to try out once it warms up. It took about 5 minutes for them to have my gyro ready and I was back to my place 5 minutes later. When I tell you this was the best Gyro I've ever had, I MEAN IT! Flavor was awesome, the sauce was delicious, everything was perfect. I've been back twice and my husband has started to frequent the place. We've been meaning to take a date night to dine in and experience more than just the Gyros. If you haven't already, check this place out! read more

The North side of Indy is a treasure trove of fantastic little local restaurants hidden away in unassuming strip malls, and Athens on 86th is one of the best. They serve authentic Greek food including all of the classics. Personally, I love the grilled octopus and the fried smelt, and we never pass up a chance for some saganaki. The dinners all come with sides and choice of soup or salad. Go with the Greek Salad, so you'll have room for dessert because they got loukoumades too, which are essentially the Greek version of donut holes. I do wish their lemon rice soup was better, but to be fair, I tend to prefer the Chicago diner style version of the soup to the authentic kind my wife's yaya used to make. Had a craving for Greek and this is our go to place! Had to wait just a bit for getting drinks but then the pacing was fine. Saganaki was its usual deliciousness! Pastichio was fantastic along with the Greek salad, garlic bread, green beans and potatoes! Hubs loved his gyro platter. The staff is so fun there. We love going to Athens on 86th St., as it is family owned and has been there for years. Our recent visit was good just like the others but we did think that the food wasn't as great as past visits. Portion sizes were good but nothing wasspectacular or over-the-top it like usual. But the services always great and so is the ambience. We love going on the weekends because of the music. read more

This is such a gorgeous restaurant and when we were there, there was even a belly dancer walking around! We came in with a large group and got seated in a side room which allowed for the kids to be kids without causing too much of an inconvenience. The spicy feta lived up to its name and was a nice mix of cool and creamy while having a solid kick. The saganaki (lit on fire at the table) is definitely not to be missed! We also got the souvlakia (one of pork and one of chicken) that were savory and beautifully grilled that looked so delicious, I didn't even get a picture. read more

Yummmmm! Food was amazing and service was great. Their hummus had just a hint of kick to it and it was so addictive. I didn't want to stop eating it. The traditional gyro was huge and delightful. I'm a regular at the Pottery By You down the street and we finally decided to give this place a try after passing it a few times. The establishment is small but the food is authentic greek cuisine. When I read the menu, it seemed that all the dishes were written in a different language when in reality it wasn't watered down Americanized. When I asked my server Ameer questions on the food he was very knowledgeable and gave me good recommendations! Unfortunately I don't remember the name of what I ordered but it was spaghetti and meatballs with gyro (not pictured) and everything about it was perfect besides the cheese not being melted down all the way. My boyfriend got the tilapia which he said was very good! Meal came with bread that was very good! Salad was too! The atmosphere was relaxed and intimate and the restaurant decorations are very themed, creating a whole Grecian vibe. Our waiter was very sweet and attentive. I got the lahanodolmades - stuffed cabbage with beef rice and herbs! It was cooked really well and very flavorful! Wayyy better than the effort it takes to make yourself! The green beans were also cooked well! The added potatoes were a bit much- but made for great leftovers. You should never leave this place hungry! Great November Day for a patio lunch. First try for Athens and there was plenty of outdoor Covid seating...spaced and breezy...service was on par and helpful. Had the classic Gyro Sandwich and its was also flavorful and everything a Gyeo should be. My main disappointment came with the lack of alternative sauces if you do not prefer taziki sauce, I have a real issue cucumbers and another place I go had a few alt sauce like a garlic and a few others that add the creaminess we crave with a gyro... I've been craving gyros and I noticed this place when I was leaving the gym. I looked up the menu online, called and ordered a gyro plate dinner with Greek potatoes and green beans for my husband and a gyro salad for myself. I didn't notice the curbside pick up in front so I parked and went inside. I was greeted immediately and directed to the bar to get my food, I paid quickly and was on my way. I didn't get to eat right away but it was easy to warm the gyro meat and I was very happy with my meal. The ONLY negative, and this is at every Greek place I've gotten takeout from, is that the dressing cup is usually straight olive oil with an itty bit of vinegar and some seasoning if you're lucky. I'm glad I keep red wine vinegar in my pantry! I absolutely loved the look and decor of the place when I walked in. If I were rating based on service and the appetizers, I'd give this restaurant 4.5 stars. Unfortunately, their entrees were so disappointing! We had a chicken gyro and vegetarian platter. Both came with mushy rice and over cooked green beans. The veggie platter had some cooked macaroni that were so bland! Kraft Mac and Cheese would be amazing in comparison. The chicken gyro looked and tasted like deli chicken slices. Not sure what took me so long to get into Athens on 86th but I'm glad I did! Great little lunch spot on the North-westside of Indy. You're almost transplanted into Greece when you walk in. The typical bright blues and scenic art encompasses the walls of the restaurant making you feel like you're having a legit Greek food experience - I was a fan! The sun was shining when the BF and I went for lunch so the flood of sunlight made it extra bright and cheery. We both kept it rather simple with our orders - got the Greek Gyro pita lunch special - this was a pita, fries and a small greek salad. Let me make it known that the fries come INSIDE the pita. A bit different - I just manhandled mine out of the pita and ate them on the side. I ended my meal with a Greek Coffee. Our server, Oliver, warned that it was going to be very bitter. And very bitter it was. But it seems as if the caffeine is doing it's job (as I type this!) I'll be back to try some other lunch items in the future! read more

It has been years since I came to this restaurant! It is out of sight, out of mind for me since I live near Westfield. It is a really great Greek restaurant! The inside is very homey and casual. I went with 10-person group and they have a nice private area for those kind of gatherings. We shared appetizers of calamari, saganaki, & hummus platter. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are big - I had enough leftovers of my gyro platter that both my husband and I made lunch of it. The entrees come with 2 sides and you can go wrong with the flavorful slow-cooked green beans and wedge cut potatoes. The waitstaff is great. Super helpful, not hovering, and gave great recommendations for wine and meals. This restaurant is easy to overlook, tucked in a nondescript strip mall. The inside of this business reminds me of many other Greek establishments in that it is somehow both insanely dark and cozy at the same time. Terrific little Greek restaurant in a strip mall on 86th St. The decor inside makes you feel like you're in a little outdoor cafe. What completes the scene is that the food comes out of what looks like a little trailer (I'm not sure this was intentional, but so be it). Service was really friendly and pretty quick during lunch.
