This review is only based on a recent carry out order of several appetizers ranging from saganaki and pita to hummus and baba ganoush. The inside of this business reminds me of many other Greek establishments in that it is somehow both insanely dark and cozy at the same time. Athens was quick to fulfill my somewhat large order and at a fair price. Highly recommend many of their sampler style apps the next time you're hosting a party. Very disappointed. I have been to many Greek restaurants in and out of town and tonight was over all no starts can be given if I have a choice. We had a bottle of Greek wine to start with, the waiter named Ben poured the 2/3 of glass before we can even taste it, didn't even ask if we would like to taste it before he poured it. Sautéed Calamari was soaked in a tomato sauce, calamari was brown and so as the sauce. Salad was blend and no taste of vinegar or seasonings. My friend ordered the Athen's combo, everything was so blend and Gyro meat almost tasted like boiled. I ordered lamb, same thing, no seasoning taste and not even warm, so as potatoes and green beans. We left and talk about never going back, spent more than we would like to on the food we didn't even enjoyed. We loved the quiet, homey atmosphere of this restaurant. The fried kalamarakia was sweet and delicious. One of us enjoyed his ample serving of langostine pasta very much. I chose the paidakia (lamb chops) and they cooked it to a perfect medium rare. Our grandson was bowled over by his 12 oz filet mignon, also cooked perfectly. The drawback (for us) was the cost. $$$$. Terrific little Greek restaurant in a strip mall on 86th St. The decor inside makes you feel like you're in a little outdoor cafe. What completes the scene is that the food comes out of what looks like a little trailer (I'm not sure this was intentional, but so be it). Service was really friendly and pretty quick during lunch. Driving around on a weekday evening and finding many restaurants had a wait list...me and my date stumbled upon Athens on 86th. We'd heard of it but never considered it. They had a few tables occupied and the holiday decorations and ambiant lighting were very romantic and intimate. Our waitress informed us she was still training and apologized. It wasn't a big deal. We browsed the menu and ordered several things: Gyro platter with rice, green beans and salad, an original chicken gyro and a hummus plate appetizer. The hummus came out and the pita bread was so soft and warm - I was literally obsessed with it. The hummus was some of the best I'd had. Our dinners came out and were also exceptionally tasty. Good, tender meat, delicious green beans and of course...more of that awesome pita bread. Yum! The only thing I didn't love was that the sandwiches do not come with a side and adding sides is quite expensive for my liking but in reality there was more food than we could handle. After our meals my date asked about the Saganaki and ordered some. It came out and we got the whole flaming experience - which I had never seen before. I was just happy it came with more pita bread. My date really thought it was good but it wasn't quite my cup of tea. There was so much food I had some leftovers for a late night snack. The bill was what you'd expect from authentic Greek dining. The restaurant was empty when we arrived and the staff are chatting to each other a lot. I used the restroom, very clean and lavishly decorated. The waitress was nice and kept her distance when she greeted us. I chose to order a glass of Lost Angel moscato. I learned a little too late the wine was a dry moscato, which is fine, I drank it. I ordered the falafel and Athens Pilikia Combo. I crushed the combo, the saltiness and coolness of the dressing really helped balance out the savory flavors of the meat and the Lima bean mixture. The bread was warm and soft, really delicious unfortunately the falafel was too dry for me to enjoy. Overall I would return and try another dish. I feel my experience was very authentic and though a little pricey I liked my meal and the speed of service. read more

A first time visit and we were SO DELIGHTED! A very nicely decorated dining room, clean bathrooms and friendly, knowledgeable staff! From our appetizer, Spanakopita to our dinner salads, fresh garlic bread and AMAZING Entrees! Everything was PERFECT! Seasoning, fresh, hot and filling Greek taste! This review is for their catering service. I was connected with Tina who is the "boss lady" when it comes to large orders (I fed 20 people). She was so friendly and efficient in all they provide. I ordered a gyro bar and it came with everything you could want with Mediterranean food: pita, tzaziki sauce, feta dip, hummus, gyro meat, grilled chicken, Greek salad, rice pilaf, down to the baklava. The food was delicious and quantity was substantial with plenty to spare. It was delivered ($20 delivery charge) on-time. It was an overall great experience. The family and I have been on a quest to try more non-traditional food. Trying to get out of our American box. A friend told us about this place and we opted to try it. It's a cute authentic Greek restaurant, really quaint and cozy. Their menu definitely featured some dishes I haven't heard of before. Some real authentic Greek dishes, real tongue-twisters lol It took me a minute to order; I didn't want to get something tooooo different. I at least wanted to enjoy the food. The waitress seemed a bit nervous to answer some questions. Like she could tell us what the dishes were, but it seemed she felt uncomfortable making recommendations, idk. Maybe it was her first day. So we ordered. Calamari appetizers were great. Lightly battered, not too much or too little. The bread that came with it was really good too. They served a toasty bread with out entrees which were also really good. We had a few baskets (seeing there were almost -2 of us). Two people ordered what was described as a leg of lamb dish, buuuuut when they received their food, it was literally 2-3 slices of lamb with the sides. They were disappointed. They felt like it was misleading. I can't remember the Anne of the dish my husband ordered, but he wasn't satisfied. It was beef with a macaroni dish. The macaroni was layered with potatoes and cheese. It wasn't for our American palettes at all. My son ordered the burger (I think it was mixed beef and lamb, I can't remember). He enjoyed it. He said it was a huge burger. Which means a lot for him seeing that he's 11 and eats like a grown man. I ordered a dish from a picture I saw from some of my other yelpers. The dish was called the mixed grill. It was basically 3 different kebabs: beef, chicken and shrimp; along with rice pilaf, green beans and potato. The dish was simply ok. The shrimp was good but my beef was barely warm and my chicken was piping hot (not sure what that was about). But the dish was ok. The green beans were honestly the highlight of the dish. Full of flavor-simply perfect. I feel like I was disappointed when I got my bill to see that my dish was a massive $32!! Now don't get me wrong, I pay for food-it's my thing. But in this case, I wasn't made aware of the price, simply going off a picture. Now honestly if the food was worth it, I would have happily paid (we paid anyway) I just wish I had a warning. I've been here for dinner a few times, and overall, the food is decent, but in my opinion, a little variable depending on the dish. On one visit, I had the stuffed pepper which was quite good; it was nicely seasoned and tasty. The moussaka, which I had on another visit, was a good, solid, traditional version, but not the best in town. On my most recent visit, I had the dolmades with avgolemono sauce; the sauce tasted fine, but the texture was off; it was thickened and lumpy rather than smooth. I've tried making this at home before, and this reminded me of one of my failed attempts. With the $16 price tag my expectations are a bit higher! The sides of potatoes and green beans were a little under-seasoned for my tastes; again, not bad, but not what I expect for a meal in this price range. The servers are friendly and this is clearly a family owned establishment; I really do like to support small, local businesses like this, and will likely continue to come here on occasion when I'm looking for Greek food on the Northwest side, but there are more consistent, higher quality options for Greek food elsewhere in town. I'm not sure if the variability depends on who is working the kitchen on a given night, or if there are just some dishes that the kitchen staff haven't quite perfected, but I am hoping this can be sorted out! read more

Had the hummus appetizer (very good), Gyro platter (very good), Moussaka (OK), and the kid had the Pita Pizza (didn't try it, but looked a lot like regular pizza). Baklava for dessert (OK). Wow, so visiting for work I literally stumbled upon this little gem. Great comfy seating out front to enjoy a cocktail. Walk inside and you will swear that you teleported to Greece. The ambiance of this amazing family run business. The real authentic music sung in person. The food was amazing as I had the Yemista (meat and rice stuffed pepper), potatoes, Greek green beans, Greek salad, Avgolemono (lemon chicken soup) and Rezogalo (rice pudding). This restaurant is pretty solid, not the best Greek food I've ever had but still delicious. The decorations and overall atmosphere of this place is also very neat, I've never been to Greece but I imagine it's similar to this! The saganaki I tried was good, but a little overcooked. It was on the chewy side and stuck to the plate which made it difficult to eat. If it wasn't over cooked I would've enjoyed it a lot more. The pita was amazing though I also had a classic gyro sandwich with fries. The fries had seasoning on it which made them so good, and I loved the gyro! The pita was toasted and there was so much sauce and toppings! It was delicious Wish I could try the baklava but I was so full, the gyro was huge. The service was also not the best that day, but I'm pretty sure they were understaffed. Hopefully the next time I come back the saganaki will be better and the service will improve. read more

We went on Christmas Eve and we're the only customers in the restaurant. We had very attentive service because of it. We enjoyed the flaming cheese appetizer (blanking in the name.) I hadn't heard of Athens on 86th until just recently and wow, I was missing out! I decided to try this place after seeing it listed as one of the locations supporting the Damien Center's Dining Out For Life event this year. I'm a big fan of Greek/Mediterranean food and Athens on 86th made one of the best (if not the best) gyros I've had. It's a bit of a drive from where I live on the west side of town but it was worth it. I highly recommend the fries as well. Got my order to-go but they appeared to be open for indoor/outdoor dining. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to satisfy a craving for Mediterranean cuisine. read more

Not sure what took me so long to get into Athens on 86th but I'm glad I did! Great little lunch spot on the North-westside of Indy. You're almost transplanted into Greece when you walk in. The typical bright blues and scenic art encompasses the walls of the restaurant making you feel like you're having a legit Greek food experience - I was a fan! The sun was shining when the BF and I went for lunch so the flood of sunlight made it extra bright and cheery. We both kept it rather simple with our orders - got the Greek Gyro pita lunch special - this was a pita, fries and a small greek salad. Let me make it known that the fries come INSIDE the pita. A bit different - I just manhandled mine out of the pita and ate them on the side. I ended my meal with a Greek Coffee. Our server, Oliver, warned that it was going to be very bitter. And very bitter it was. But it seems as if the caffeine is doing it's job (as I type this!) I'll be back to try some other lunch items in the future! read more

I've noticed this place a few times when I was going to the now closed restaurant next door. It was always lively on Saturday nights and I wasn't sure if they were having a private party, or if it's like that all the time. I received a gift card and decided to make my way over for lunch. The inside was was really nice, but I decided to dine outside because it was a gorgeous day. The server was super sweet, friendly and patient as I asked her a couple times for descriptions and her preferences of the meals. I knew I was ordering the baklava sundae, I just needed something to even out all of that naughtiness! I opted for the Grecian Grouper, and it was light, fresh, flavorful and filling. And the combo plate of Greek dishes featuring mousaka, pastichio, spanikopita, tyropit, a gyro meat, dolmades, pita (delish) and especially the tzatziki was so fresh and delicious. Based on the cost for menu items of this place, I was really expecting more here. I also noticed that Yelp reviews were pretty much all good. My wife and I took our family out to dinner here and expected a lot more than we got. The service was average, the food was below average and the cost was astronomical. I can't give this place 1 star because there was honestly nothing wrong with this place if you come expecting overpriced Greek food made by people who probably have never had real Greek food.
