Yum! We ordered catering and everything was perfect and on time. We had their famous Greek salad with chicken and some rolled chicken sandwiches made with their famous homemade pita. First of all, the bread is amazing; it's worth it to go here just for that. Buttery, chewy and charred; perfect. Fantastic food and fantastic prices! I came here for the first time today during my lunch break and the food came out so fast and you can definitely finish your meal in less than an hour if you need to. I got the chicken bacon ranch pita and artichoke hearts. My friend got a salad with gyro and the lemon soup. The pita was amazing, my friend said they made them in house, but even so I didn't think they'd be SO amazing. The artichoke hearts were good with my wrap. The gyro salad here is great. I get it with the gyro meat grilled. They are big and filling and come with plenty of toppings. The Greek dressing is great too. The tzatziki sauce is hit or miss (I always order a side for the gyro meat on my salad). It's like it depends on who makes - you may get what tastes almost like plain yogurt, or may get it made with cucumber or dill. I got chicken on my salad once and wasn't a fan- it was dry and bland. We came here because it's down the street from the Dime Store and we had a 45 min wait. Apparently they just opened back up and business has been slow. The bartender was very helpful and friendly. I work near by and they always have the food ready within 10-15 minutes during lunch time if I call ahead and let me tell you - YOU NEED TO. this place is outrageously busy during the workweek lunch shift. I've never had to wait for my food as long as i call ahead, and when I get back to work to eat it, it's always hot and fresh. George the owner is fantastic and provides great customer service and during the lunch rush is super helpful trying to get orders in and take outs, out. Their pita bread is the best ive ever had! Crispy on the outside and warm on the inside, i look forward to the pita sometimes more than my actual meal. HUGE disappointment. Talked up how amazing Athens is to my coworker. We walked over for a carry out. I ordered a Greek salad with extra olives- there was one olive on the salad and very little toppings in general. Worst of all, they did not put pita in!!! It has always come with Pita and that's the best part. Finished lunch and still hungry. My coworker ordered a gyro bowl with chicken. They gave him lamb and the portion looks half of what it was before. Only one fork in the to go bag. This was always a Detroit favorite of mine but seems like it went way downhill. I walked in for lunch today. The food was fast, hot and fresh. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. I had a gyro without sauce and the Greek fries. They were fairly busy but still fast. I was in town for a conference at Cobo Center and took a nice, short walk over to Athens Souvlaki. I ordered the lentil soup and gyro Greek salad. I've never had lentil soup with full lentils, usually it's crushed, but it was really good. Some kind of chicken or vegetable broth. They only have bowls of soup, not cups, but it's worth it! The gyro meat on the Greek salad was room temperature, but still really great. I LOVED the Greek dressing, it was a perfect amount of seasoning and tang. The true MVP of the meal was the pita that came with the salad. Typically I don't eat the pita at restaurants, but this was so unique. It was slightly crisp around the edges and was so fluffy. This was place was packed during the week for lunch. It is definitely a fast pace environment so if you're looking for a relaxing lunch I would not eat here. Had lunch here today. Typically at lunch it is the same two waitresses. They are both great! There is a gentleman who buses the tables, gets your water, and often seats people. He is also a big reason for the good service. The small chicken Greek salad is delicious and plenty for lunch. With tax, $8.96. Salad is lettuce, feta, chick peas, tomatoes, pepperoncini, beets, and olives. Lots of chicken - sometimes a little too salty, but tasty. However, the real reason people go here? The made-to-order fresh, hot, grilled pita. So good! My main complaint: In the winter, way too much cold breeze/draft at a bunch of the tables up front when people open the door (which happens a lot since they do a lot of carryout biz). Not sure how they could rectify this, but if you go early enough, you can get a table further from the door. Been here a few times with co workers for lunch. Food is always pretty good and generous portions. Menu is pretty similar to a coney island but more Greek food options and a decent amount of choices for hamburgers. I got the chicken finger pita. Good size, but wish there had been more sauce. My co worker raves about the gyro pita bowl, so that might be one of their specialties. They are usually super busy as I believe they get a lot of carry out orders, so food might take a bit longer than anticipated. Overall a solid place to come get lunch. read more

i tried this place during lunch hour, after reading many good reviews! i decided to just go in and order versus calling, since i wasn't sure what time i'd be picking it up. it's a little confusing to find if you're already inside the Penobscot building, however if you're coming from outside you can enter the restaurant on w fort street, which is way easier. it was packed inside, however i ordered at the take out counter and my order was ready in less than 10 minutes, and you can see each order being made fresh to order behind the counter. one thing that i liked was that i ordered fries and they made sure to give me plenty of ketchup and other necessary condiments (fork and knife, etc) i ordered the lamb gyro with fries, and it was pretty amazing. the lamb is fresh and tender, and the pita bread is the best pita i have ever had on a gyro! i know they make them fresh and this is why i will come back here. the only thing i will say is that the gyro definitely needed more sauce than they put on it, so order an extra side of sauce! the workers are suuuper friendly too, everyone who walked by acknowledged me and said hello. you can't beat the prices here, either. coney charges about the same or sometimes more than this place does for a gyro and coney does not even come close to the taste of this place. i will be back to try the chicken gyro! read more

The food here is always good, delicious, and fresh. George, the owner, is a very nice person. It gets extremely crowded during lunch time, especially in the summer. Very clean place. Went there at around 1pm today and inside seating was available. My server was very nice. I ordered the Greek salad (medium size) and a spinach pie. The Greek salad was one of the best I have had. Great ratio of lettuce to other vegetables too. The feta cheese seemed shredded almost. So there was feta all over. Not just a few clumps here and there. I like that it was chopped for easier eating. Their Greek dressing is awesome and the warmed fresh pita was excellent. No joke! Spinach pie was very good served hot. Not a spinach pie with a lot of cheese in it but it had a very buttery taste which made up for it. The server was very attentive and polite. It was a little on the expensive side, but I don't mind paying a little extra when the food and service is great. The meal was about $16 for the salad, spinach pie and iced tea. I had the Moussaka and my wife had a Gyro plate, which allowed her to make her own Gyros with fresh baked pita and all the fixings.
