I recently decided to sell a car to Carmax and honestly, it was a lot easier than anticipated…read more I highly recommend doing an expedited process by submitting all of the paperwork online in advance. When I pulled up, I signed the paperwork. They did a final evaluation on the car and I was out with my check in hand within 15 minutes. They even ordered me a Lyft back home.

My first experience was excellent, and that's the reason I kept coming back. The service team at that time, especially Ms. Whitney, treated customers with professionalism, respect, and genuine care. Unfortunately, she is no longer there, and the experience with the current team has been the complete opposite. My vehicle was shipped from Alabama, and when I picked it up, it wasn't in the condition I expected. It was dirty and had multiple cosmetic issues, including scratches, paint chips, stains, sticky residue, and damage to the driver's seat. I reported everything within the 30-day period, expecting the issues to be corrected. Instead, what should have been a simple repair turned into months of frustration and four separate trips back to the dealership. Each visit seemed to uncover another problem. Deborah repeatedly forgot items that were supposed to be repaired, which resulted in me having to return again and again. My fourth trip was only necessary because things that should have been completed previously were overlooked. On another visit, after the repairs were completed, the exterior liftgate button suddenly stopped working. The inside liftgate button still works perfectly, so the issue clearly started after my vehicle was serviced. Even after bringing it to their attention, they refused to repair it. The repair to my driver's seat was also unacceptable. The original issue was minor, but after they attempted to fix it, the seat looked much worse. It had obvious discoloration that looked like it had been spray painted. I honestly would have preferred the original imperfection. The customer service made an already frustrating situation even worse. Anthony, the service manager, was rude, dismissive, and made me feel like my concerns were an inconvenience instead of something that should be addressed. Lorraine answered the phone with an attitude on multiple occasions. Every interaction with her made me feel like I was bothering the staff simply by asking for an update on my own vehicle. One of the most frustrating days was my third visit. I sat in the waiting area for approximately seven hours with my children and received little to no communication about the status of my vehicle. I repeatedly had to ask for updates instead of anyone proactively keeping me informed. Over the course of these repeated visits, CarMax never once offered to provide or reimburse a Lyft or Uber, despite the significant inconvenience caused by multiple return trips for issues that should have been resolved the first time. My time clearly was not valued. I continued giving CarMax opportunities to make things right because of the positive experiences I had in the past. I wasn't looking for anything unreasonable--I simply wanted the vehicle I purchased to be repaired correctly and to be treated with respect. Instead, I dealt with poor communication, incomplete repairs, repeated trips to the dealership, rude customer service, broken components that weren't broken before the repairs, and an overall lack of accountability. I finally accepted my vehicle back because I was mentally exhausted from dealing with the situation, not because every issue had been resolved. My exterior liftgate button is still broken, and I was left feeling like my concerns simply didn't matter. This experience has completely changed my opinion of CarMax. The company I confidently recommended to family and friends is no longer the same dealership experience I once knew. I sincerely hope management takes a hard look at what's happening in their service department because no loyal customer should have to go through what I experienced.

They do offer competitive pricing and newer-model vehicles compared to many other used car dealerships, so there are definitely good deals here. However, I want other buyers to be aware of something important regarding the warranty process. My current vehicle is a 2023 Nissan Altima and it developed two relatively small issues: the front right headlight stays on while the car is running, and the front passenger seat back will not move forward or backward. These are not major repairs, but the process of getting them addressed has been difficult. The warranty provider (Assurant) requires several days to approve claims once the car is at the mechanic. During that time, the vehicle just sits there and Enterprise does not provide loaner cars. If you rely on your vehicle for work or daily responsibilities, this can leave you without transportation for multiple days. Unfortunately, the warranty company does not provide a rental until the claim is approved from an adjuster nor do they reimburse for alternate transportation if you pay out of pocket. My main concern is not the vehicle itself--it's that buyers should understand the warranty repair process can leave you without a car for days at a time. I also attempted to contact management several times about this situation and did not receive follow-up communication. Enterprise still has good inventory and pricing, but I strongly recommend asking detailed questions about warranty timelines and transportation options before purchasing, especially if you depend on your vehicle daily.
