I schlepped out here one afternoon last week in search of a certain quantity of high-quality smoked fish to serve at a party. The location is weird--an office park off Windy Hill, in what looks like it could be the headquarters of a mid-sized pool cleaning business. But this is not a pool-cleaning business--it is, in fact, a small but well-stocked retail outlet for all things Russian and pickled, salted, and--thanks be to God--smoked. The smoking, both hot and cold, is done in-house, behind the shop--hence the wacky location. After tasting a few items, I bought a large side (~3 lb) of smoked salt-and-pepper nova salmon ($30), a half-side of smoked butterfish (which I think is actually sable, $27), a cold-smoked trout ($8), and an 8-oz. jar of salmon caviar ($14). The fish was truly some of the highest quality I've ever had--silky yet toothsome, with a deep, smoky flavor and a woodsy aroma. The butterfish had a pale, firm flesh, and was cut a bit thicker, which nicely highlighted the slightly springy texture of the flesh. I did not get to taste the trout as it was quickly picked clean; however, the animals I call friends all tell me it was premium. The salmon caviar (the large, reddish-pink eggs) was reasonably good--this is not a product made by the smokehouse, and was middle-of-the-road in terms of the quality they have available. All but the trout were frozen when I bought them, but neither the texture nor the flavor appeared to suffer from that at all. Service was provided by a delightful woman who made honest recommendations and opened a few products to give me tastes, including the whitefish salad and the salmon spread. They were both a bit rich for my taste, and I didn't love the flavor of the whitefish, but the salmon spread would be killer on a fresh bagel or stuffed into an olive. Other products available include cured meats and sausages, a variety of dairy products including farmer's cheeses, pickled tomatoes/cucumbers/grape leaves/etc., Russian cookies/candy/canned things/etc. and these amazing frozen chocolate-covered cheesecake confections. (On a side note, do not miss the amazing frozen chocolate-covered cheesecake confections.) Who's Barney Greengrass, again? Whatever. Atlanta Smokehouse's quality is unbeatable, period. And the price is terrific. And it's locally made by nice people. They should be very proud of the product they're selling, and you should buy as much of it as you can fit into your fridge. read more

Some of the highest quality product I've run into in my life in terms of salmon roe, salmon bellies, smoked mackerel, buttah fish, and kippered salmon. Don't play with it y'all. I loved the hot-smoked salmon kabobs and the hot-smoked tails (I think salmon, too?). I look forward to return and trying more! Wow, this place is such a hidden gem outside of the perimeter. I have never tasted better smoked fish than from here! I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in and saw that the shop also offered Eastern European goodies (all of my favorite snacks from Ukraine). The shop owner is funny and friendly and super helpful when you're not exactly sure what fish you want to walk out with. You might be put off guard if you are not familiar with Eastern European cuisine/languages, but don't worry--the owner is accommodating and willing you show you around! This place is amazing. I was looking online for a place that sells caviar and other delicacies when I spotted their website. When I discovered they were in Marietta, I drove down there. Their prices are VERY fair and their smoked fish is the best I have ever had. The salmon roe is the highest quality I have ever had and their in-house smoked salmon is the perfect breakfast food. I was totally blown away by the fair prices and incredible quality of their merchandise. I even bought lamb pierogis to have for dinner one night. These guys have great Eastern European foods. And yes they have the very high end caviars but I have not had the pleasure of trying those yet. But if you love fine Russian foods you MUST pay this place a visit. I finally drove down to the shop this evening battling Friday after work traffic and it was all worth it. Their website doesn't have prices so I called, nobody answered so I left a message. Gary did call me back after an hour or so. I had a very pleasant chat with him about my smoked fish needs. After our phone conversation, I knew I really have to visit the store like ASAP. It is a little bit tricky finding this place but once you get there, you'll have no problem. It is just out growing bushes and trees blocking the building sign which is #1700. The shop is rather small but they have tons of good eats. I picked up 2 cold smoked mackerels, 1 hot smoked mackerel, a pack of cold smoked Butter fish, 1 whole pound of cold smoked salmon bellies, a big hand full of smoked capelin and a can of salmon roe, all for under $40. They also carry cured meat products and other items which I may try in future. This place is going to be my only go-to shop for all my smoked fish crave. If you like smoked fish, you have to try this shop. Price is affordable, staff is helpful and knowledgeable about the products they carry, and I think they're doing a great job keeping the shop clean as well. If you grew up in the Northeast, eating smoked fish for brunch over the weekend, or for special occasions, you will love this place. It has it all, and they do most of the smoked items in-house. Picked up smoked sable, rainbow trout, herring, mackerel, halibut, and paddlefish and had a feast over the weekend. Prices are very reasonable. The location is small, but packed with all kinds of other products from Russia. I will be back to try some other things, including smoked salmon, butterfish and whitefish.
