This particular morning in Atlanta was no different. As I pushed uninspired scrambled eggs around my plate I did what any food-obsessed traveler does: I opened the Michelin Guide. Surely Atlanta had something worth driving for before the afternoon meetings began. The city's Michelin stars leaned heavily toward pristine sushi counters where lunch could easily become a three-hour exercise in restraint and expense. Not today. Instead, a Bib Gourmand caught my eye. Heirloom Market BBQ. The address looked odd. The photos looked even stranger. Was Michelin seriously recommending what appeared to be a convenience store? Naturally, I was intrigued. The closer I looked, the less it resembled your grandfather's barbecue joint. Yes, there was brisket and pork. But there was also kimchi. Pickled vegetables. Gochujang. Color. Acid. Freshness. Suddenly the idea of barbecue for lunch didn't feel like signing up for an afternoon food coma. By 11:30, I was standing in line beside construction workers, office employees, and locals who clearly knew something I didn't. I ordered the smoked, diced, and braised spicy pork topped with kimchi slaw and cucumber kimchi. Korean barbecue sauce arrived on the side. For good measure, I added the green tomato kimchi--a mix of sweet and spicy pickled green tomatoes, jalapeños, and radishes. The pork was everything good barbecue should be. Tender without falling apart. Smoky without becoming bitter. Moist without relying on sauce. Deeply satisfying in that primitive way smoked meat always seems to be. The green tomato kimchi was extraordinary. Bright, crunchy, layered with acidity, sweetness, and just enough jalapeño heat to keep your attention. Every bite reset your palate before the next forkful of pork. It's the kind of side dish that refuses to stay a side dish. The Korean barbecue sauce deserves its own paragraph. Gochujang led the charge, backed by enough vinegar to cut through the richness and enough heat to remind you someone in the kitchen enjoys having fun. Against all odds, I managed to finish lunch without wearing any of it on my green Oxford shirt. A personal victory. Heirloom Market isn't polished. Service is efficient rather than memorable. You order, you eat, you leave. That's the point. What lingers isn't the hospitality. It's the confidence. This kitchen knows exactly what it wants to be. Southern barbecue filtered through Korean flavors isn't a gimmick here--it's the language they speak fluently. The entire meal reminded me of La Barbecue in Austin, another place where smoke is only part of the conversation. Michelin eventually rewarded La Barbecue with a star. Heirloom may still wear the Bib Gourmand designation, but when it comes to flavor, it's operating in the same league. Will I return? Without hesitation. This place is attached to a corner store and looks like somewhere you'd stop to buy a pack of cigarettes and a scratch off. Instead it has some of the best BBQ I've had in Atlanta. They mix traditional southern BBQ with Korean flavors and somehow everything works. We got the chicken sandwich, spicy Korean pork, greens, Brunswick stew and mac and cheese. Everything was great, but the mac and cheese was fucking phenomenal. I could've eaten a gallon of it. The Korean pork was so good it'd make you want to crash a plane into your enemies. The brisket was maybe the best I had in Georgia. The sweet and sour wings were fantastic! The Mac and cheese was good, but not out of this world good. I placed my order at around 10:30 am online. Pulled in to the parking lot at around 11:01, walked right up and was greeted. I let them know my name, and in about 5 minutes I had my order. They have a patio now and do not let customers inside. They want you to use a QR code to place your order and pay. The patio does not have chairs. I ordered the pork rinds, brisket sandwich, HM Hot Chicken Sandwich, and baked beans. They gave me a lot of pork rinds for $4. The pork rinds are very crispy but lack flavor. Updating my review after trying Heirloom again and having a better grasp of what I consider great brisket to taste like. This time around, I felt that the brisket was a bit too dry and undersalted. I appreciate the thicker slices, but when it's not moist enough, it starts to feel more like a block. Perhaps we were not given a moist piece, but the brisket in my opinion was still undersalted, and therefore did not carry much flavor. Our party got their 3x3 combo and the other meats were decent. The turkey was actually pretty decent (not dry like it usually ends up being). The sides were okay but I didn't feel like they were anything special. I always judge a BBQ place by how good their mac and cheese it, and this was literally one of the best. The shell noodles and the cheese was perfect. We came here on a Friday around 4-5pm so we beat the dinner rush and missed the lunch rush. Perfect timing, as they said they do get very busy. The chef was so nice and gave us some free BBQ sausage to try in addition to our order, delicious. Ribs, tender juicy and flavorful. I dont think ive ever had collared greens, but here they were delicious! I cannot say a bad thing about this place. Its in an unassuming portion to the right of a convenience store. I have mixed feelings about my lunch here. I've been wanting to go for years, but just never have been on this side of town at meal time. I got the pulled pork sandwich bc it is so highly praised, but it was way too funky for me. The taste of meat and fermented sauce just made it taste spoiled to me. There is art on the walls of patio painted by Erica Arndts of celebrities eating BBQ and the family that provides the exceptionally good food. A meal of a sandwich and a side will run about $14-15. They provide free water in a cooler on the patio but you can also run next door and get a soda (or Arizona iced tea cause they are great and 22 oz's still only cost .99). Service is friendly but be aware that when you get to the place, you need to scan a QR code, place an order, then tell the person delivering bags of food the name you placed the order under. We got a brisket platter and a pork platter, with slaw and barbecue beans as our sides. If you're deciding between the pork and brisket, I would definitely go with the brisket. It was really phenomenal, it was moist and tender (not really fatty either, which I appreciated). The pork was also really enjoyable. I haven't had a barbecue sauce like this one before. You'll definitely have to try it! I loved it. The platters come with a bun and pickles, so you can make your own sandwich if you want to. I would definitely recommend putting the slaw on your sandwich! Be aware that there is only standing room to eat -- 4 tables (maybe 3 people per table given the space) with additional counter space along the walls that could fit roughly 8 more people.
