We needed to replace two original central HVAC units (upstairs and downstairs) in our house, both 37 years old. We contacted five contractors, most of whom had very positive customer reviews. We chose Atlas because of their incredible professionalism and attention to detail in the quoting process. We were surprised that their price was also the most reasonable, once we got our short-list contractors to quote on an apples-to-apples basis. We didn't expect that given Atlas is a union shop (which suggests their installers may generally have greater experience). On top of that, there is a $250 per system customer rebate directly from the union. To provide our price estimate, Kevin came and surveyed all our vents and, in great detail, measured the available space in our furnace closet and the area supporting our outdoor compressors. He wanted to make sure he recommended units that would work best given our size house, air flow capacity, and physical installation space. While three contractors said we should put in 4 or 5 ton units by visually assessing only the size of our existing outdoor compressors and glancing at our furnaces, Kevin's analysis, like one other, showed that our existing vents could not actually support more than 3 tons. Indeed, in looking up the specs on our existing units, they were 3 tons as well. It was clear that Kevin did not want to sell us more than we could use to keep the price as low as possible for our needs. One installer didn't even want to quote until we told him what our budget would be--how should we know prior to understanding what we actually needed and what any upgrades might cost? We proactively opted for slightly more expensive multi-stage and higher SEER systems than what Kevin first recommended as we wanted to reduce noise and increase efficiency. Kevin later found that one of the coils he had priced into his Bryant system quote might not fit, so he substituted a more expensive, higher efficiency coil at no additional cost. I had plenty of questions after the visit, and Kevin was incredibly responsive by text message and phone. I also wanted to install an automatic earthquake shut-off valve on the main gas line to our house as a safety measure. Kevin recommended and coordinated a reasonably-priced third-party plumber to do that for us during Atlas' HVAC install. Prior to installation, Kevin returned along with Steve, a 35-year veteran tech from Atlas to do a pre-installation site survey. Again, they did a very detailed review for the upcoming installation and discussed nuances that they would need to take into account. The two-system Bryant install was done by Nick and Ryan. Nick has 14 years of experience. The work progressed very smoothly with demolition and removal of the old units the first day, installation of the new units the following two days, and then a couple of extra hours of testing the fourth day just to make sure the Bryant auto-learning staging algorithms were working properly. The team was very careful with all aspects of the installation. Each day, they laid out runners to avoid tracking dirt on our carpeting as they walked in and out of the house (in addition to putting on shoe covers). They pressure-tested the existing pipes out to our compressors. They added various safety devices to meet current code. They replaced the raised platform that our outdoor compressors are mounted on. They fitted the outdoor pipes with UV-resistant insulation, which should last much longer than our old ones did and upgraded the outdoor electrical boxes. They secured holes around piping that potentially could let rodents in and installed a screen for a vent inside our utility closet for the same reason. And they even painted the wooden platforms that our indoor furnaces rest on (despite the fact they are in a utility closet that no one sees). Kevin came back during the install to make sure everything was going well. Nick and Ryan kept us well-informed of progress along the way. Though we are still awaiting our final Title 24 inspection (always done by a third-party testing company), Nick did a basic check on every vent, suggested that we could keep one closed if desired (near our return vent, thermostat, and wine storage), and opened up the damper below our house for one that had apparently been closed for the last 32 years. I was amazed at the crew's attention to quality and detail, none of which cost us more--no nickel and diming. It's no wonder that Atlas gets not only get great reviews here on Yelp, but also has the highest number of recommendations in the online discussion forum for our neighborhood. In summary, Atlas provided us with a highly experienced and professional crew that pays great attention to detail...and a fair price. Given that the good-sized family owned company has been around for generations, we feel secure in knowing that they will be here to service the equipment, if and when necessary. read more

The Atlas team did an amazing job replacing our aging gas furnaces with heat pumps last week - it was quite a job crawling around a tight attic for the upper level and then a crowded crawl space for the level below. But the team was very energetic and coordinated, as well as willing to accommodate our schedule as well. We had met with different estimators to decide what company and systems to use and, while Atlas was not the least expensive nor did they propose the least expensive equipment, we felt that that they were more experienced and their recommendations were more valuable. The conversation included them asking me to estimate what the cost of AirCon is, presumably to make sure I wasn't wasting their time if I couldn't afford it. I found this a little bit odd.. but whatever, if they have a full book of business I can understand that they don't need wild goose chases. We made an appointment for someone to come to my home midweek to provide a more detailed quote. Person never showed up. I was pretty busy at the time with guests staying with us and waited until the weekend before putting in the call to ask what happened. I left a message with an answering service and never heard back. All a bit puzzling. On the plus side, I suppose they didn't charge me for their time. read more

Our furnace stopped working, and we got tired of sleeping under 4 layers of blankets so we called Atlas Heating and couldn't be happier with their service. JD and Del called ahead to let me know they were coming (well within the 10am-2pm window we were quoted) and arrived promptly. They were not only professional and knowledgeable but pleasant company too. I stuck around to watch them work and ask questions, like what would cause a blower or capacitor to go out. While training and helping Del with the task at hand, JD kindly explained to me in laymen's terms as my limited knowledge of electrical circuits dates back to Physics 8B in college. Atlas just replaced our 32-yr-old furnace (originally it was state-of-the-art) with a modern unit that's an amazing improvement in quiet and ability to maintain requested temperature to an exact degree. The job was done in half a day from removing the old unit to completing installation, thorough clean-up, and careful testing. Cost was less than some other bids and came with the attentive service from Atlas that other reviewers have also described and seems to be central to the company's culture. It was a pleasure to interact with the installers (patient with my questions) and with every person I encountered at Atlas Heating. We were planning replacement for a while, but suddenly our old unit died completely so we begged for an early install date. There was an understandable miscommunication about the exact date, but to accommodate us, supervisor Kevin jumped in, changed from business clothes to overalls and with a sharp guy named Chris handled the job much sooner than we could have expected. A furnace is a long-term appliance and new designs are highly complex devices, so reliable warranty service is even more important than what brand or model you buy. The way Atlas performs and the way they treat customers reflects the values of the Tuck family who have operated this business since 1908. I just had Atlas tear out the very weird and non-functional old heating system in my 1890's house and put in a new furnace and ductwork system, including enlarging and cutting holes in delicate 11-foot lath-and-plaster ceilings. Kevin came out and gave me a quote for the work, and I appreciated that he was realistic about the challenges in the house and about whether it would make more sense to spend extra money on a more efficient furnace or on better insulation and weather-proofing for the house, even though only one of those would have made his company more money. Will and Josh did the installation, and they were very careful about making sure the work looked good and about keeping the house clean - I was amazed to come home and not find it covered in plaster dust every day. Curtis was absolutely amazing. Not only did he and his company get and install a new, top of the line heater for us on short notice, they did it at WAY less of a cost than other companies quoted. They were easy to communicate with and work with and Curtis even was kind enough to replace our HVAC filter, which we were appalled to find out was pretty gross. I called Atlas on a Sunday afternoon and I received a call from Elizabeth the same day at around 8 p.m. This was early June 2019, during one of the first heat waves of the year, and it was 91 degrees in our house with an 19-yr old dog suffering (it was 88 degrees in the room where our portable floor A/C was). Elizabeth put me at ease...it was clear she was very experienced with her knowledge. We quickly scheduled the initial inspection, then booked the July 25th installation date (it took 2 days to install). We couldn't be happier with the results. It was pricier than we expected, partly because we decided to go with a smaller unit, and also partly because we needed extra duct work, but it's totally worth it. The unit has only "struggled" once to keep our house at the set thermostat temperature. You know, it's just not that cool in the Bay Area any more, and since the June 2019 heat wave, there has been too many other hot spells to count. We asked Atlas to come back to adjust the dampers they installed to force the cold air towards the "back of the house," where the hot afternoon sun hits. So now it's not arctic cold in the front of the house when we're watching TV and I'm more comfortable. read more

Stay away from these guys! They sound great but they are crooks. We paid them $99 to inspect our furnace that had stopped working. My visibly pregnant wife met the contractor, who spent 10 minutes "diagnosing" the issue alone. His conclusion was that we needed a new zone board and wiring throughout the house. We agreed to have him come back with his crew to do the work after we got a firm estimate, but he let us know that it would be thousands of dollars. Given the cost, we decided to look at it ourselves. It turns out that he had cut the wires to a temperature sensor that was required for the furnace to operate. I spliced the wires back and re-installed the sensor (10 mins). Everything worked again. There's no way this happened accidentally or it had been that way before they came. No one had been down there and the wires were cleanly cut and the sensor unscrewed and placed beside the furnace. I don't know what the original problem was, but this definitely was not it. The zone board and wiring that the contractor said needed to be replaced are fine. This was a pure con. Don't get fooled by the great communication and prompt service. read more

I am myself a specialty contractor, so I have perhaps higher expectations than most. The dispatcher answered a slew of questions that I had with grace. The tech called me prior to the four hour window and was able to work with me on doing the work on the furnace at a hot yoga studio between classes. He quickly determined the blower to be at fault and after a quick call to HQ, he told me the company owner was going to drop off the right unit in 10 minutes. The tech, Ian, had 29 yea with Atlas, and spoke very highly of the family-run business. They really took care of business with an uncommon level of professionalism and competence. read more

I have had reasonably good experiences with Atlas over the years, but have decided to change to a different company. They do high quality work but are more expensive than most, and, thanks to Yelp, I have located a company that does good work for a lot less. I needed a central air furnace installed - from scratch, including cutting holes in the floor for new ducts. I got four bids and Atlas was the highest by about 10%. I decided to pass on them. They have also done repair and cleaning jobs for me, all of which were expensive but OK - except for one. They replaced a part in a floor furnace of mine - the gas control valve. A few months later, the part failed again. (The part was manufactured by General Controls, a White/Rogers company.) The part was still under warranty, but Atlas didn't mind charging me top dollar to replace the free part again. (After a few years, the part failed a third time, at which time I decided to replace the whole furnace.) Bottom line - If you have more money than time, and want to hire top notch professionals that can deal with any problem, then you should consider Atlas. But if you are willing to shop around, you can get the same result for less.. read more

Since my Yelp review, Atlas has contacted me and said that they made a mistake on their original estimate by $2-3K minimal. They've also offered to give me a free furnace tune-up in the future. Their price was still higher than most of the other bids but having them contact me and offer a future service even though I decided not to go with them redeemed them a bit in my eyes. read more

So my tenant is complaining that is heater works intermittently and so I call on MLK day around 5:30 pm and surprisingly get hold of Lisa who is very helpful in diagnostic the problem and saying that all units should get maintenance while they are there. It's a good idea cause I have 4 units and new heaters installed about 4 years ago. So they give me a 9-12 window and a 20 min call ahead as requested so I don't have to sit out there and wait. So my tenant informs me that the tech got there around 10am which seems reasonable considering that Atlas called my at 9:40 am to say he would be there in 20 min. ( When I arrived at 10:20 he said he had been there an hour which is B.S.) So the tech replaces the filter and does some maintenance on the 4 units which takes about 1 1/2 hrs. Lisa told me it would be better to do the $145 hourly rate rather than the $89 rate for each unit. Well the tech tells me upon completion that the job is around $450 and I'm like I don't think so. He says he started at 9:00 am getting ready for the job. Well I don't pay people when they are traveling to work unless that's the way it's billed. So we agree that he started at 10am and that it should be $145x 1.5 hrs + $89. I question the $89 since we're on hourly rate, but he says that since it was a no heat call and he had to diagnostic the Thermostat and install it the one I provided. Long story short. 5 stars customer service from the office and 3 stars for the service. I ended up paying $306, but don't be all shady and try to charge me an extra hour or make up a bunch of charges. Just cause I am a nice guy doesn't mean I want to pay you extra. It just leaves a bad image on your employer when you try and overcharge your customers. read more

Top Notch HVAC I've used them for repair and also for a custom DIY part. Both times they have been stellar. Their staff is well-trained and have good company loyalty. They work well together. The professionalism is consistent from reception to the on-site techs. The office is neat and organized. Both are good indicators of a healthy company. For the repair they gave us a 4 hour window and stuck to it. The cost of labor was reasonable. What I especially liked was that the technician didn't mind me hovering over him, asking questions, and poking stuff. That's very cool to have that kind of patience and easy going attitude. After he was done he cleaned up his mess, summarized the repair, and gave me an itemized receipt. Easy-tidy-effective. Our 50 year old furnace has been running great ever since. Only one negative comment. When I called to report the furnace problem, I asked if it was serious enough to stop using the furnace until they fixed it. The receptionist had someone call me to answer that. Well a nice guy Steve called me back and said it was fine. Well it turns out Steve is the parts guy, and was talking out his ass. The REAL tech diagnosed the problem and gently informed me that a small explosion was likely. They should keep Steve away from the phones. read more

So last week I gave Atlas a one star review and stated that their tech was unscrupulous and trying to oversell me. As you can now see by that one star morphing into five stars I honestly couldn't have been more wrong. These guys were spot on with their diagnosis and their response after reading my review went above and beyond what could reasonably be expected. The longer story follows.. Get home during the last hot spell and my AC won't start, the unit outside is just buzzing loudly at me so I'd seen an Atlas van on my street earlier in the day and call them up. Their tech arrives promptly and determines the compressor is dying and that it needs replacing. He also recommends not just replacing the compressor but the AC unit itself as the refrigerant now used is different but to do that they'd need to remove the furnace to access the coil. At this point he also mentions that the heat exchanger is cracked and that should be replaced as well. Now back in December I'd had Eco Performance Builders come out to do an energy audit. Part of that was checking the furnace and they'd specifically told me the heat exchanger was fine. So the first red flag goes off, I don't see how he'd been there long enough to know that but I figure okay perhaps it cracked in the summer and don't really think much of it. The tech leaves and we agree to schedule getting an estimate on replacing everything. I leave and my wife pays the bill, only we are over billed. My wife calls them up and Atlas quickly sends us a refund for the difference only when it gets here there is no stamp on the envelope. So off to Yelp I go with my 1 star in hand convinced this is a dodgy operation. A day or so later after getting back from vacation the owner reads my review and leaves me a voice mail, she also follows up with an email, very polite, very apologetic yet baffled how this could have happened. She explains that their senior tech had been to my house way back in 96 and noted that there were cracks, that's how the tech that just came out knew they were there. Now I'm still dubious at this point but she suggests having PG&E check it out, she also sends us a check for the entire over billed amount (along with the first check for the difference) and again is very apologetic whilst also standing behind her techs. Which brings us to today - PG&E totally verifies that there were cracks, I can't believe Eco Performance Builders missed it, and I'm also annoyed that the previous owner didn't get it fixed back in 96 but Atlas are totally vindicated! Their communication whilst all this was being sorted out was exemplary and I'm sorry I ever gave them anything less than the five stars they deserve. read more

We just had a new heating unit installed in our little house in Albany by Atlas Heating and thought a few details of our experience from start to finish might be helpful to others contemplating a similar upgrade. We had an ancient Atlas floor furnace (dating from the 1930s, we think) that had been repaired a couple times, but after doing a bathroom remodel we thought we should push ahead w/ a central system, a York model. I teach at a university where writing evaluations of performance and recommendations is a typical part of the job. I can say that we were very pleasantly surprised with the degree of professionalism, courtesy, and solid work ethic we encountered in two Atlas employees, Mr. Bruce Trestrail (who did the initial estimate) and the installer, Eric Turcios. For starters, Bruce spent over an hour doing an energy assessment of our 960 sq. foot house, including measuring windows and going under the house to look at all existing gas lines and space restrictions. He explained things in detail and with good humor, so it was easy to understand what we were getting into. His written estimate came within 24 hours of the initial meeting, just as he said it would. By contrast, we did a second estimate with another heating company and their estimator spent about 20 min. poking around, did not go under the house, and then had to be prompted to send the estimate. It was about $1000 over Atlas' estimate of $7700. The real "star" of this review is Eric. He faced some daunting space limitations and a challenging work area in the crawl space under the house, but he never complained and worked diligently and carefully each of the four days he was at the house. He explained to us what he would do in advance, kept his work areas neat, and cleaned up at the end of each day (which we really appreciated, given that our "yard" is a half-lot). He even got used to taking off his shoes when coming inside (another courtesy we greatly appreciated). Eric was also incredibly patient when, on the last morning, we decided to change the location of the register in our bedroom, causing him to once again go under the house to site a new placement. A senior installer (whose name was Steve I believe) came by on the afternoon of the 3rd day to provide some backup but other than that, Eric completed the majority of the work. As a result of Bruce's initial configuration of the job and Eric's expert installation, we now have for the first time a centrally heated house where we can walk from room to room without out bracing for blasts of cold air. We are most appreciative of the care given to this job and think the Yelp community should know there is a reputable heating company in the area. read more

We decided that we needed help after detecting an electrical smell that was coming out our heating vents. I first called Ceridono, the people who installed our furnace. Wouldn't you know it, they're out of business! I next phoned a long list of heating specialists that I located through a Yelp search. All but one of them had appointments available only weeks out in the future. Atlas was the exception: they scheduled an appointment several days after my phone call. The technician who was assigned to our case came in the middle of the window of time that was given to me by Atlas. He phoned a half-hour before coming to make sure that someone was home. The technician in question (Erick, I think) gave our furnace a good looking over and declared that it was running like a champ. His analysis was that a dirty filter was causing the problem. I had considered this possibility and had changed the filter before making any phone calls; Erick explained that often it takes a few days for dust to work its way out of the system. We were charged only a diagnostic fee ($89) for Erick's work. As he predicted, the smell disappeared a few days after the diagnostic visit. I was happy with Atlas's service and will call them first when we next have a problem. read more
