Mike Sherman showed up on time and was very professional. He spent quite a bit of time taking measurements, asking questions, and answering ours. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient during the process. Afterwards, he was prompt with the initial estimate and continued answering more questions. Due to a planned vacation, I wasn't in touch with Mike for some months, but once we reconnected, everything got back on track. There were some communication issues that delayed the process, but given the busy time of year, it's understandable. When it came time to schedule the work, Will was the primary onsite and did a fantastic job. He was on time, professional, knowledgeable, patient...much like Mike. Additional communication problems lead to the install being delayed, but they were promptly corrected. When I expressed some frustration over the issues, Lisa, the manager and owner, immediately addressed them and went above and beyond to smooth things over. Given the consistently good ratings, I know my experience was a fluke. Mistakes happen, it's a part of life. A few months after the initial diagnosis, I relented and called them back to have the ignition unit replaced ($500). Relying on the owner comment from my previous post, I requested the first call appointment where they were supposed to appear between 8 and 9 am. At 9:10 I called to get the technician's ETA. He didn't arrive until after 9:30. The reason given by the office was that there had been a staff meeting that morning that ran late. I debated deducting a star for the late arrival and lame excuse, but decided not to because the install was quick and now, more than a month later, it is clear they fixed the right thing and did it the right way. read more

We divided our approx 2k sq ft home into 2 units (upstairs/downstairs) so mom could move in downstairs. For this reason, it was very important to have a separate control system for the heat. We had several companies come out and with each request, we asked for the most experienced person to visit our home for the quote. When I called Atlas and explained our specific needs, I was connected with Bob Tuck, the owner. He came out the following week and did an VERY THOROUGH inspection. He spent much more time than any of the other contractors and provided us with a very detailed description of his recommendation and why he make each choice. My husband and I were very impressed. The other companies also seemed quite good but we just KNEW that Bob was going to get the job done right. There was no question. Although Atlas were slightly more expensive, we were happy to choose them to complete the job. I'd rather pay a little more now and make sure it's right the first time. There were several unavoidable issues that came up throughout the installation and Atlas managed each one quickly and professionally. Bob came out on the first day to make sure his team had a very clear understanding of what needed to happen. He provided them with detailed drawings and they seemed to know exactly what they were doing. All of the staff were courteous and respectful of our home. It was a great team of people altogether. We've been using the unit now for nearly 2 months and it's terrific. Much quieter (nice surprise) and much more efficient than our previous unit. I interviewed several HVAC businesses to bid on my furnace and duct replacement. The quotes were all fairly close in price, and each company ended up recommending the same unit due to the furnace space configuration. What sold me on Atlas was that they have been in business for 100 years, they use union labor, and they answered all of my many, many questions. Everyone I dealt with at Atlas was professional and courteous. They even came back and adjusted my thermostat for me a few months later for free. Kevin and crew did a great job for me! I needed my furnace completely removed for some construction. They went above/beyond for me. The unit was stored safely until we needed it returned. When the re-installed it they did a great job, and changed out some damaged duct and found some better ways to fit in our space which made more room. We purchased our Trane A/C unit from Atlas 23 years ago. It's running fine, but wanted to have it serviced to make sure it's in good working order for the summer. Worker Casey called to let us know he was on his way, showed up when he said he would, and was very respectful of our home. We have an over twenty-year-old small wall heater in our vintage Albany house. The pilot light was on, the thermostat was working, but the heater would not stay on. We suspected a thermocouple had failed. Even though we kind of knew what the problem was likely to be, we did not want to hazard fixing it ourselves and mucking around with the electrical and gas lines. ;-) We called Atlas after trying to reach some other heating repair companies and either getting no response to emails or calls, getting very delayed calls, or getting a surprisingly high quote to just come to the house. Our trusted contractor who did a lot of remodeling recommended Atlas, and when we called their quote for a household visit was quite a bit less than others. We were able to schedule at a time that worked for us. Chris from Atlas showed up in the middle of the time window we had received and promptly diagnosed the problem (yes thermocouple, aka pilot generator). He had the part needed in his van. Once he got the part replaced, he found that the pilot orifice needed cleaning so the flame would be stronger. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and quick to repair the heater. We are pleased to have it back in working order. Too bad we did not do this before my family arrived to use the room during the holidays! By the way, our son who lives a mile away returned from a few nights away last weekend and found his heating system had quit working and the circuit breaker had tripped. He called when he heard we had gotten a good response from Atlas last week to set up our own service, and he got a prompt and quite sobering visit from another repair technician. It turned out that he had had a nearly hazardous event with his heating system , avoiding a house fire by luck. Pays to have these things looked at every now and then. :0 read more

I've had two experiences with these guys since moving to the Oakland hills. We bought a very old home (hadn't been upgrade much in the 47 years the same family lived here woohoo!). We were strongly considering moving the furnace from the basement to the space under our living room two months ago. We'd gotten a bid from another very nice outfit, but we wanted to keep them honest with a second bid. So we called Atlas. Bob Tuck came over and was just amazing. First, his thoroughness eclipsed the other outfit by a fair amount and they were good. He climbed into crawl spaces and suggested insulation would be benefit us a lot even though he had no stake in that game i.e. they don't install insulation. He spent an hour or more and took detailed notes. He also explained and clarified several things for us about our existing system and the plans we had. The final kicker came when he delivered the bid: it was meaningfully lower than the other outfit. We have decided to defer on the work for now, but there is no doubt in our mind that Atlas will get the business when that time comes. Next, that old heater went out during this recent cold snap! Man, let's talk about a lot of not fun. Because our insulation wasn't good and the windows are drafty, this place was like an ice box. My missus was very not happy and I did not blame her at all. We tried to get an appointment the next day with Atlas after spending a miserable night, but they couldn't get over until the following day. It was soooo cold, we had to try to find someone else, but we did book an appointment with Atlas as a backup the next day. Well, we found an outfit here on Yelp (who shall remain nameless). They were nice guys, but as it turns out they did not know their stuff as well as they could have. They replaced a part and with labor it was over $500. And it still didn't work! In fairness, they did tell me that this might happen. They said it may be this secondary part. Well, when the first one fail, they said they had to get the other one on Monday as the place that sold it was closed for the weekend. We were looking at spending a danged cold weekend and we were bummed majorly. In the meantime, I had mixed up which outfit I had booked the backup appointment with, so I call the wrong place to try to cancel. So the Atlas guy showed up and, very long story not so short, he IDed the problem immediately, had the part the other guys didn't have, and fixed it!!! We had heat again!!! He was pretty generous about not criticizing the other guys, but I could see they didn't really know as much. Anyway, Atlas has earned my business in spades. They are a great outfit and I'm glad to share my positive experience here. UPDATE: Atlas did the furnace relocation for us and did excellent work. We are very happy. I have been an Atlas customer for almost 25 years and recently called them in to inspect two HVAC unit they installed in 1991. At first, I was very unimpressed by their service technician who recommended replacing both systems at a cost nearing $20,000! When I voiced my concerns to Fletcher Taylor, who followed up, he immediately rallied the Atlas troops. They immediately brought in a service specialist, Ian Bray, who at no additional cost thoroughly investigated the furnace internals with modern video equipment and deemed that it need not be replaced immediately. Fletcher did give us an excellent proposal for what it would take to update our units when needed. We will undoubtedly call Atlas back when needed. Atlas took an disappointed customer and treated him like a king, even though it meant they did not get the sale this year. I founded a 170 person software as a service business and know how difficult it is to get an unhappy customer back to a very satisfied state, and then recommend you publically! Kudos to Fletcher and Ian and all the unsung heroes back at the home office who pulled off an outstanding save. My only feedback is "Fletcher, never retire". (BTW, he is 75 years young!) read more

I called about my furnace which was making a scary noise. It's pretty cold out and we have a big space that doesn't have great insulation. The owner of the business called me back about an hour later. Even though they didn't have anyone in the field. She was concerned about our safety given our description of the problem. We'd found someone else to come look at the furnace, but the owner offered to text with us during her dinner if we felt uncomfortable or wanted another opinion. They were able to schedule the replacement after the initial scope of work in about two weeks during the peak season. The work was done efficiently and promptly within a single day. They coordinated the permit final inspection and it passed without a hitch. On the office side, Laurie and Marnelle are pleasures. The first job was a few years ago for a new HVAC system in a small industrial space. Ok, so I *had* a rocky start with these guys. Getting the breakdown of the job (parts, labor, etc.) was difficult, and they didn't initially lay the vents in a manner which made my attic stay useable. I was furious with both things. BUT Here is what to love tremendously: they admitted that these things were rocky, didn't try to play it off, were *gracious* about it (truly!), AND took responsibility for their part. They are slated to come back and re-route the vents so the space is more useable, and they gave me a good breakdown of the expenses (even straight-forward on the mark-ups) so I could use them for my taxes. Even without the drama portions, the guys who came to work on the job were helpful, really lovely guys. One even pointed out to me that I had money sitting out, and that I should put it away when folks come to work on the house. They are conscientious, cleaned-up after themselves, and a good bunch, really. Further, they worked quickly, the heating system works wonderfully, and they used quality materials. We have a Fujitsu heat pump that had been improperly installed by another company. We'd tolerated substandard performance for ages until Ian from Atlas came to fix our furnace and also checked out the heat pump. When Atlas came to do a checkup on Mar 8 this yr for my furnace I learned that it was not working and needed an expensive repair job. The furnace was over 20 yrs old, and it made sense to replace. It was cold in the house in early March, so we needed it replaced ASAP. Atlas recognized the urgency. It was a total team effort, they sent an estimator within 48 hours of the checkup visit, explained options and prices and checked their staffing calendar to find the earliest date they could do the replacement. It was amazing. We had a new furnace installed by Mar 15. They promptly kept me aware of what I needed to do, provided helpful guidance and made reasonable changes in their normal order of business steps to move the project along as quickly as possible. They were great!!! I happily give them the highest rating for customer focused attention. Highly recommend them!!! Updating my previous review. After my previous (one star) review, the owners reached out via phone, finally returning one of my four calls from over two weeks. I'll give Atlas credit for trying to salvage a pretty rough experience over the previous month. The owner came to my house within a day or so, and he did a thorough re-inspection for an updated estimate. The updated estimate came in MORE expensive than the original estimate I had received a month prior. Meanwhile, I had reached out to additional HVAC service providers and was more willing to give them a chance. I ended up going with someone else who gave me an estimate close to Atlas, but without the overhang of terrible/non-existant service. Happy with my alternate choice, as the customer service has been top tier. read more

They installed a rheem heater in a tight crawlspace under my house. I asked them to tweak the ductwork to make the back bedroom a little warmer than the rest of the house. Toasty warm! I visited their facility to pick up extra furnace filters and felt welcome and got the filters I needed. --edit to add that I needed their help when the furnace stopped working. It was 10 or so years old (I couldn't believe it's been that long since I got my "new" furnace). The guy showed up on time, told me the mechanisms in play that might have to be ordered. Then, a few weeks later, another guy came back with the parts, only needed one and was in and out pretty quickly. Note, I was lucky. I found out the furnace was broken in May when one night was a bit chilly and the furnace did not respond. People come in here and complain about how they were freezing because they had to wait for a part. I have always tested the furnace well ahead of heating season because I don't want to be caught up short. Ordering parts does take time, so test your furnace in early October. read more

Atlas put in three air conditioning wall units in our house. They all work well. However, this shout out is about their customer service. Unfortunately, one of the units was not sealed correctly initially and, during a storm, a bunch of rain come in and destroyed our carpet. Atlas agreed to pay for half the cost of our carpet replacement (it was already several years old). Even though we waited a bit to get them an invoice, Atlas made good on its promise. read more

It's been 5 years since I replaced my 60 year-old Atlas air system with a newer model. This system functions beautifully and adds to my health and well-being. Because the system, of course, needs regular maintenance, Ian (head of service department) provides extraordinary care for all customers. I do get regular servicing because I use the system a lot. Ian is, not only good with the customer, but great at engineering various solutions for the customer. He also helped me find just the right air system for some other equipment in another location. These guys were really great. They really understand their way around all HVAC systems.... I've used them 3 times. One of the technicians, JD Osborn came out this last time He got there exactly when he said he would arrive, figured out the issues quickly, helped me figure out the issue and if the gas valve that needed replacing was under warranty to waive the cost as well as switch out one of the temperature controls that we surmised was defective and not operating how we expected. The scheduling process and coordinators were extremely helpful and polite as well. They are my "go to" every time. The service is excellent and professional. read more

I called Atlas Heating at the recommendation of my architect Karl Wanaselja. On the phone I spoke with Bob Tuck discussing heat pumps and mini-splits. Then Zach Turner came to discuss estimates. He immediately understood the unique features and challenges of my house. He asked whether I had the architectural plans. I did. He reviewed the plans, opened up his laptop and on the spot did an energy assessment based on my actual house. He made some recommendations that seem appropriate, although challenging, and nothing that Atlas can provide. All of this advice, based solely on the architecture of my particular house, its heat gains and losses, for free. Plus, he was nice, polite, and friendly. That is service! read more

Funny, I always thought Castro Valley was in Alameda County. What else is on their website that isn't true? If this company is too busy to accomodate, I can understand. But then just say that.
