If you love freshly sliced meat (not deli meat but real turkey breast, roast beef, ham) on your sandwiches, this is a great lunch spot! The breads are fresh also and the soups change daily. Although I've heard that The Atrium has good soups, salads, and desserts, the reason I love this place is the meat. Every day they cook up a fresh turkey, ham, and roast beef. These are sliced as you order. If you get there around 11AM, the meat will still be slightly warm as you take your first bite. My only complaint is that the wraps and sandwiches are not stacked as high as they were when I first started going here five years ago. read more

I visited based on the 4 star review, but left with a much different impression. When walking in, I was pretty excited given the respectable atmosphere and the individual slicing meat for sandwiches. Then I started eating. I think the mistake was ordering the Roast Beef (which I'm pretty sure wasn't a roasted piece of beef but instead a basic cold cut block). It was tasteless. And the freshly washed lettuce unfortunately tasted like dish water. My friend picked up the turkey (which looked like a turkey breast) and seemed to fare better. Popped in with our family of four to get a quick breakfast before hitting the museums. Not quite what we expected, and a bit hard to find for out-of-towners getting off at the L'Enfant metro stop. But we got there nonetheless, and the bagel sandwiches were pretty tasty. Prices were decent. It was fun to see some cops come in and chat it up with the staff, as they were obviously regulars. I would give it four stars because its in DC, but this place is nothing special. They carve the meat in front of you, but that doesn't make the meat quality, because it is not high quality. The roast beef is clearly over cooked and dry. I chose the turkey for this reason. The quality of the toppings are subpar. The bread fell apart immediately. It was 9.30 for a turkey sandwich with cheese and an iced tea. They charge extra for cheese, really? I know that is the cheapest cheese you can buy so please. I won't be back unless my only options are fast food chains like subway or Quiznos. read more

The ice cubes in their iced coffee were made out of coffee-Yum! It was perfect as I walked around DC in the hot sun. They also have a big selection of salads, veggie bowls, etc. it reminded me of the delis that I used to frequent in NYC for lunch when I lived there. Still had downtown prices, but less touristy than the rest. read more

Surprised this hidden gem has mixed reviews. As a New Yorker, I know a good deli when I find one. This is an amazing deli. I recommend this place for the deliciousness of the food; however, customer service leaves something to be desired. The food is yummy. I particularly liked the grilled cheese sandwiches, and believe that they are among the best-prepped sandwiches in DC. The cheese always tastes deliciously creamy, and the bread is perfectly toasted without being dry or burned out. The shrimp salad is also really good and fresh-tasting. The coffee, on the other hand, tastes rather bad, and has that unpleasant, metallic, burning taste that some coffees have. I am not giving Atrium a higher rating because of the aforementioned lack of service quality. The service is not horrific, but not the best. I was told that the grill closes at 2:45 p.m. Once, I came around 2:30 and ordered the grilled cheese sandwich. I was told that the grill was already closed. I pointed out that it was not 2:45 yet, and that the grilled cheese sandwich can be made in 5 minutes (I had observed them make the sandwich within around 5 minutes), before the "official" grill closing time. However, the server girl kept insisting the grill was closed, with a rather snooty smile on her face. If they say the grill closes at 2:45, then the grill should be open until that time! read more

I have been to Atrium Cafe twice and their sandwiches taste good. However they are put together very sloppy. The meat and other toppings are just piled on top without any care for nice placement. I also do not like the fact that they only take cash. Get with the times and accept credit or debit cards. A much better alternative is Cafe Twelve at 12th and Maryland SW. read more

Probably the best lunch option for those of us stuck in the barren L'Enfant Plaza/Southwest area during work days. The sandwiches are made to order with hand carved ham, turkey or roast beef. They do have other options like tuna or egg salad, but there is no reason to not get one of the hand carved ones. You pick your bread (beware, some breads are 50 cents extra), meat, cheese (also 50 cents extra), and condiments. If you don't speak up fast enough, you'll just get mayo, lettuce and tomato by default, and your sandwich will be sliced and wrapped up before you know what happened. Take a second to look at the options and dress your sandwich accordingly. The spicy mustard is excellent. They also do breakfast. Bagels, muffins, croissants, and pretty good egg/cheese/meat sandwiches. Lots of coffee options too. The line can go out the door at the peak of lunch time, but it moves quickly. The only good place around L'Enfant for a LONG time! A bit pricey for a deli sandwich, and they don't take credit cards as of the last time I was there (although that may have changed with an influx of competition), but it's worth it on occasion because the food is AWESOME, staff are pleasant and efficient, and you definitely get your money's worth in meat. Did I mention it's fresh-carved and still warm, so you know it's fresh? It's great. I hope they decide to take cards soon, otherwise they may not make it with the similar deli a few blocks away (but Atrium's food is way better). Definitely recommended, but get there either before or after the noon hour so you can avoid crowds. My favorite Deli in DC. Meat is cooked fresh everyday and served in generous proportions. Many choices for add-ons. I go everyday for breakfast too (eggs made to order). If you're a regular it doesn't take long to get to know the friendly staff. There is a certain format to lunch ordering though, if you don't catch on other people in line are sure to help out. Yay! I'm a fan. I discovered this place two days ago and will make my third trip there today. The sandwiches are $6.05 or $6.55 if you get it with cheese. **They do take credit cards** Some reviews say they don't, but I've used my debit every time I've gone. They carve the meat in front of you and load the sandwiches up well. None of that three slices of thin meat crap you get at subway. I highly recommend trying it. read more

The food is okay moderately pricey for the area, however, even if the food was free I wouldn't eat there because of the poor customer service. I attempted to communicate to the owner my concern regarding the service of her employee she has working the register she was not responsive or appeared not to acknowledge that she either empathizes or understands. She actually was laughing after the fact like I told her something funny. The great thing about this area there are tons of other cafe/restaurants with better service and food. 3 stars and not 4 because they charge to heat a sandwich, which seems ridiculous (esp. when it's a traditionally steamed sandwich, like corned beef and rye). Read the signs carefully, as their advertised prices rarely take into account any kind of modification. The chicken and corned beef is solid, though. I come to this location quite often, however I was very disappointed today. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and stepped away from the food counter. When I returned to the counter, one of the workers was making a sandwich and it looked similar to what I ordered. The worker did not have on cloves when she placed the egg on the bagel and then positioned the egg on the bagel without wearing plastic gloves. She then put on a glove and pulled bacon from the container it was in. I asked her why would you touch the egg with your hand and then put on a glove afterwards. She stated that the sandwich was for her...another worker was in fact making my sandwich I later saw but the fact she was handling utensils and other food unprotected was wrong. I believe had I not came back to the counter she would not have put on the gloves to finish making her sandwich. I complained to a person that appeared to be acting as a manager or supervisor but she didn't seem to concerned...don't think I'll be returning. read more

I gave Atrium one star because the customer service SUCKS! Customer service is important to me. The ladies who make the sandwiches are rude and have terrible customer service. The manager doesn't seem to care even after making her aware that I was unhappy with the service I received. I work next door and my coworkers and I eat there because it's convenient. They make you feel like ordering YOUR food that YOU'RE paying for is an inconvenience. Never going back! read more

In my opinion the bagels are ok. The scones are terrible. Worst scones I've try in my life.
