This place is tiny tiny and very oriented towards the college crowd, but that's kind of what you'd expect from something right near GW. That said they had a great selection of sandwiches and other items. Also good selection of vegetarian options. The service was super quick and the sandwich was delightful. The staff were very friendly. The description if you search for it says it's in the dorm, but it has its own store front, so don't be deterred and think you have to randomly wander through a dorm to find the place. Nah, never again. The photos look pretty good. Jog on, you poor soul. I got a hot pepper turkey sub with a side salad. The sandwich itself was light as a feather. Yes, lots of bread, but very little in between it. Hot pepper turkey. Hmm. Did I see any hot, sweet peppers at all? I don't think so. Pepperjack cheese, ok. But that's not how it was described! Also, the cheese was nasty. Legitimately smelled like vomit. It was a struggle to eat this sandwich. And the salad? They have a vast selection of different sodas and kombuchas. They also have a variety of grab and go packaged snacks. I had a chicken Caesar wrap; it was so yummy! This was our first time I got the chicken pesto and mozzarella sticks and my girlfriend got the burger. I loved the crispy chicken and pesto on ciabatta and the mozzarella sticks were nothing to complain about good fry and not caked in oil. The burger was delicious and the fry's(lacking just a hair of salt) were super crispy on the outside and fluffy in the inside. Overall first impressions 5/5 read more

Carvings is your pretty standard lunch/dinner, carry-out, quick order place. They serve hot and cold sandwiches, burgers, soups, and some salads. I have never had their breakfast but I've heard that's also pretty good. Everything at Carvings is pretty standard. I don't think you're in danger of anything "blowing you away" here, but what they do offer is reliably good. My recommendation would be the Cowboy Burger, because if there's one thing I love in this world it is flavoring meat with other meats! The fries are good as well. The prices are pretty reasonable for the area, and the serving and portion size are plenty generous. Plus there's the added bonus that you aren't just going to Subway, or Au-bon-pan (of which, I am not a fan). Be warned, this is a popular stop for George Washington students, so expect to see several college-types at any given time at the restaurant, or in line. I'll be 100% totally transparent in this review. Part of the appeal of Carvings to me was that I lived right across the street. But, I also knew that whenever I went here I wouldn't pay to much, and the burger was going to be good. Maybe not great, but solidly above average. If you're really looking for an AMAZING burger that will KNOCK your socks off, I'd recommend Burger, Taps, and Shakes (BTS) just up the street. If you're just looking for a quick bite, or something simple and not super expensive, Carvings won't disappoint. read more

Loved Carvings until 2 seconds ago, when the woman behind the counter told me I couldn't have any hot sauce to accompany my order. I ordered a breakfast burrito and hash browns, she gave me a salsa for the burrito, ketchup for the hash browns, and refused to give a packet of hot sauce. She said "you can only have 2", so I told her "I want to buy some then, because I want hot sauce with my order". There's no minimum amount for condiments listed on the menu. A good basic place to get fast food. The staff was very nice with smiles all around and the food was made on the grill in front of you. No heat lamps needed. Bagel, egg and Meat (bacon, ham, turkey sausage, turkey bacon or regular sausage) was very tasty for under $4. Compared to $12 @ my hotel well worth the walk. Regular stop for my son, who attends George Washington University. We enjoyed lunch here while packing up his dorm room for the end of the year. Great local atmosphere and quite an extensive menu. Everything is reasonably priced and cooked to order. My son ordered a Tuna Melt and I selected the Gyro. While I've never actually had a gyro with sliced cucumbers and cheese in a pocket-pita, it was a pretty good sandwich. Just not a traditional gyro that I expected. I've been going to carvings ever since I was a freshman at GW, and I've always viewed it as convenient solid food. However, there has been a change of management and that has absolutely ruined carvings. The food still tastes the same, but the prices are ridiculous now and they even charge you extra for small ketchup packets (wtf?) I don't know what the new owner is thinking but my friends and I will not be back, and I'm pretty sure most GW kids will stop coming. Know your market, it is not fancy food or coffee and it will never be that, so the prices should reflect. But paying close to $20 for some chicken tenders, soggy fries, and a coke? No sir, The hospital dining hall even makes better food than carvings. Also if you want to charge higher prices maybe actually clean the restaurant and put some care into the design, carvings is a laughing stock now. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Carvings used to be the spot to go for average tasting, cheap food. Now carvings is wildly expensive and the food has even gone down in quality. I will not be back and I will advise others to not go as well. It seems all the staff has changed as well, so I'm assuming there has been a change of management. The location has a lot of potential but sadly, the price, horrible cleanliness, and horrible food ruins any potential they had. Came here for lunch today. Ordered fried shrimp and fries. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the fries were not greasy and very tasty. This was a pleasant find... the restaurant located on F street does not a lot on atmosphere as it is really just a take out place so I encourage you to order from here but go outside to enjoy the meal as there is not a lot of personal space inside the cafe. read more

Since the inclusion of bacon was the entire reason I ordered this sandwich, this made me very sad. I used to come here a lot last year, but they have fallen off. I walked in, to be ignored by three women working behind the counter. They finally asked me what I want, I asked for the Italian sandwich with a scooped out sub roll. Last year they had no issue doing this for me. Never and issue, before but I get the sandwich, it's soggy with dressing because they poured a vat of it on there. I said, to hell with it and ate. I eat the first bite and towards the end of the first half my sandwich starts giving me a certain tang. I put it down, open the other half and see that my lettuce is rotting,and the meat has a sticky film over it. It was old meat, and it was starting to get bad, I sniff it and it smelled horrible. It's kind of a secret. But not really. Carvings is tenderly nestled away within a large residential building along F Street in Foggy Bottom. You can access it from the outside so no need to worry about elbowing past college students returning to their dorm rooms. It serves pretty standard grill fare - burgers and sandwiches to order, with breakfast items as well. There are plenty of pre-made items as well and a bountiful selection of snacks and beverages. The colorful array of Asian candies and other items add some unique zest to the locale. Personally, I think they planned to call it "Cravings" in an attempt to attract the late-night college crowd and simply misspelled the restaurant. They don't do a whole lot of carving in general - the sandwiches are decent but not the freshest ingredients. Fries, that typically come with the burgers, are the thick 'n crispy kind of goodness and should leave you happy. Carvings is actually similar, if not an exact replica, of the "Gallery Market" grill that is located on 23rd street - also in a college residence building. Clearly the same ownership and many of the same items. It's not a bad option for a quick lunch at typical DC prices. Enjoy. read more

Good comfort food at a convenient location for GW students! The fries and a little soggy but have a breading on them which I like in a fry. The uptowner is great! It has mozzarella, tomato, basil, & balsamic vinegar. I've gotten it to go and microwaved it so the cheese was more melted and highly recommend it! I love Carvings. Their prices are reasonable, they give you a ton of food, and the Korean couple that owns it is extremely nice. The chicken quesadilla is big enough for 2 meals (in my opinion), the turkey burger is solid, and the bulgolgi comes with enough rice to feed a family of four. Oh and the fries? Get them. There are a few booths and tables at the front for you to sit if you so choose. They also carry single packets of medicine (Aleve, Tylenol, etc), a large assortment of teas/juices/flavored water, and European and Asian chocolates and candies. read more
