Carvings is a small, local deli in Washington, DC, where I recently picked up lunch to-go. It has the feel of a mom-and-pop shop, and with roots going back to 2008, it clearly has staying power. That said, the pricing structure left me scratching my head. For instance, you can get a sandwich *with fries* for a set price--but ordering just a sandwich (no fries) will still run you about the same. In my case, I wanted a plain chicken sandwich--just chicken, cheese, and sauce (though there was less than I thought there'd be)--and was told it would cost the same as the full combo. I asked for chips instead of fries, and that was fine, but it didn't feel like a great value. To be fair, running a small business in DC is no cheap feat, and I understand that pricing likely reflects operating costs. Still, $17 for a basic chicken sandwich and a bag of chips feels steep--especially with minimal toppings and limited sauce. The menu might benefit from a more flexible or à la carte pricing model, especially for those who want just a sandwich without sides. Also, the selection of add-ons like chips, drinks, or snacks seemed fairly limited in store. I respect the effort to keep things going in a tough market--but a few tweaks to the menu and pricing structure could go a long way toward enhancing the customer experience.

Wings and fries with buffalo sauce and blue cheese. Do you see any of the two sauces? Then they have the nerve if I'd like any sauce?

Wings and fries come with two sauces. I asked for buffalo and bleu cheese. Do you see any of either?

Carvings has comfort food, like chicken tenders, fries, & quesadillas, and they are open really late! They cater to the college crowd in Foggy Bottom. They have a vast selection of different sodas and kombuchas. They also have a variety of grab and go packaged snacks. I had a chicken Caesar wrap; it was so yummy! The chicken tenders and fries are solid, too! The prices are reasonable. The late hours are what make this place great!

This was our first time I got the chicken pesto and mozzarella sticks and my girlfriend got the burger. I loved the crispy chicken and pesto on ciabatta and the mozzarella sticks were nothing to complain about good fry and not caked in oil. The burger was delicious and the fry's(lacking just a hair of salt) were super crispy on the outside and fluffy in the inside. Overall first impressions 5/5

Food was great and fast service. I enjoyed my Breakfast Burrito and my friends were very happy with their chocolate chip pancakes and eggs

The employees also dissed my friend in Spanish thinking we didn't know what they were saying. Watered down coffee.

Rude cashier. Coffee tasted watered down. Food was 2/5. Not a good atmosphere. Would not recommend.

Steak and cheese sandwich is awesome! This is a twist on Philly cheesesteak with a few extras. They are also well priced for the area.

The space is gorgeous; I love all the plants, and the light brown, light blue, and white color combination for their furniture makes the space look classy and modern. The light brown leather couches are comfortable, and I love the way they circle around the tables to create a natural, cozy booth. Our food was just as beautiful as the space. The Restaurant Week menu comes with an appetizer, main, and dessert. Given how indecisive I can be (and how expansive the normal menu is), I was grateful to have my choices narrowed down a bit. I started off my meal with the octopus. The octopus was remarkably tender and not overly chewy, and had a delightful char that gave it a slightly smoky flavor. They double downed on the smokiness with their burnt chili oil, which, alongside the lemon and salsa verde, gave the dish a wonderfully balanced smoky, savory, and slightly acidic flavor. The crushed potatoes had a lovely crispy shell on the outside and served as a great base for the tender octopus. The main course was probably the easiest choice of the evening -- I'm absolutely obsessed with branzino, so the second I saw it on the Restaurant Week menu, I knew that was what I had to get. The fish is beautifully broiled, with a nice, crispy skin and super tender, flaky flesh. It's topped with a few pieces of roasted garlic and a wedge of lemon. The fresh lemon juice, as well as the lovely side salad, offered a great pop of freshness to bring the whole dish together. And finally, for our dessert, I chose the chocolate torta. This wonderful dessert is remarkably rich and decadent, with a strong dark chocolate flavor. It's topped with a lovely marsala date sauce and scoop of sheep's yogurt ice cream, but still doesn't feel overly sweet. The sheep's yogurt in the ice cream offers a bit of tanginess, and I loved the addition of the candied walnuts for a bit of crunch.

A five-minute walk towards downtown from the Mayflower hotel made Tatte Bakery an ideal spot for breakfast. It also has nice views of Farragut Square. I went with the House Full breakfast that included Applewood bacon, eggs, potato fritters with tomato jam and mint parmasean, and house made sourdough. I was curious to try one of their best sellers - monkey bread, and it didn't disapoint. A solid breakfast with on point service before catching the metro to Virginia. I really enjoyed my visit here and would return in a heartbeat.
