I came here this past Tuesday with a group of teachers to enjoy a nice lunch before a Professional Development session across the street at the Yale University Art Gallery in the afternoon. There were 9 of us. We walked in and got in line, all trying to choose what to order. When we were noticed that we were planning on staying, the staff promptly started to clear and push together some tables to accommodate us. It was a really nice gesture. We were even brought menus to look at instead of ordering from the counter. I had the half & half combo with the turkey club sandwich and black bean soup. Both were fantastic. The black bean soup was topped with diced onions and even came with sour cream that had cilantro folded into it. It made me want to go home to recreate it (though I haven't just yet). So good. I also had a iced Chai, very well made. I hate when I get iced Chai and it tastes like milk water with little spice. This had a great balance. Next time I go back and have more time to check the whole place out, I'll be sure to get a sweet treat too and look at the children's books for our son. read more

Beautifully positioned right next to Yale's campus, this is such a cozy spot to grab a coffee/quick bite and look through the bookstore. The employees were very friendly :) The star of the cafe is the mac and cheese. This is by far the best I've tried. I used to love stopping by Atticus for lunch, but the quality of their food has really decreased recently, especially the meatballs. When I ordered these for brunch with friends recently, they were dry, overcooked, and the sauce was much more runny than I remembered. Service is ok, but could definitely be better. read more

Browsing through the other reviews, others have stated already that Atticus does not lend itself too well for studying with a laptop and multiple notes. I am putting in this in yet another review so it is a bit more visible since I had to do some digging to find this online. In fact, like many others, I came to Atticus thinking the bookstore and the cafe were incorporated seamlessly. It turns out that the cafe is separated and feels more like a restaurant. The tables are too small for a computer aside a coffee or pastry, and outlets are sparse to non-existent. With that being said, it still is nice place for students who have a small tablet and/or a few written notes that they want to review. The bookstore section has some fun reads, but is nothing too unique or special. It does feel awkward to bring a book from one side of the store into the dining area given the set-up but I don't think anybody would scold you otherwise. The food and coffee here is decent overall. I normally get a cappuccino when sitting in at Atticus that tends to be slightly on the bitter side for me, but is still well-prepared otherwise. The portion sizes are not over-the-top big, but a single dish can be shared for a light snack. Overall, Atticus feels like a nice place to catch up with others over coffee or brunch with a separate bookstore next door with a wall knocked down. On the flip side, the bookstore is a nice location to kill some time with a few pulp books with while enjoying pleasant scents of pastries and coffee in the air. read more

This is mainly a review of the cafe section. It was really interesting and cool to see they have a bookstore and alcohol as well. The cafe was being worked by two kids, a girl and a boy. We saw the girl being very rude to some of the customers not sure what was going on there but it looked super unprofessional telling them "don't act nice now. You can leave. You are not welcome here". We ordered our drinks and they came out terrible. Everything just tasted like regular hot or iced coffee. We got their special drinks like the white chocolate raspberry latte and the French toast latte and they just tasted like regular ice coffee. The two hot drinks our friends ordered were also not very good according to them. The girl seemed like she absolutely did not want to be there and the boy sounded sick, was sneezing and sniffling. Around 15 minutes before closing, the girl came and kind of started yelling saying they're closing in 15 minutes and she needs to clean our section when she could've just said it in a normal tone. We responded in a nice manner and left. Overall a really weird experience. The workers do not want to be there at all. read more

Good place to stop in for a casual lunch. There's a pretty good variety with the menu - sandwiches, soups, salads. Wish I could try them all! The sandwiches are a very decent portion. On one of my visits, I ordered the turkey club and asked to add avocado. They forgot to add it to my sandwich, but brought me a side dish of it and in the end didn't charge me extra. You can also mix and match your lunch with half portions of salad/sandwich/soup. Lunch time can get busy, so expect a bit of a wait. Or you can order to go. The server, Othello, and Tnaisa, the manager, could see the panicked look on my face as I looked from my purse to the table where my friends were eating. Tnaisa said, Don't worry about it. After dining here twice (both times a year and a half apart) and reading other reviews I have to agree with a few things: bad customer service and not a good place to sit to study. This place advertises itself as a "cafe" but if you want anything other than a coffee and a scone you have to dine in. It's quite annoying when you are looking for a place to study or read. Not a suitable place for this. And the servers seem miserable. Because I didn't know it was table service I ended up going over my budget. The only reason this place gets 2 stars and not 3 is because of the rude servers and false advertising. Also: music is WAY TOO LOUD! Cafe worker has a shockingly bad attitude! My husband and I went to Atticus yesterday for lunch. He is visually impaired and walks with a cane. We entered and he sat down at a table. I approached the counter and asked the woman working there if she had a menu I could take to the table so I could go over it with my husband. She barked at me that they don't have menus. I explained that my husband is visually impaired and couldn't read the menu board which is high up and has small-ish lettering. I asked her to accommodate his handicap but she was inflexible, unhelpful, and acted like I was being a pest. I was shocked that someone who works with the public could treat a customer with disabilities with such rudeness. read more

Being right across the street from Art gallery is such a huge plus to this coffee shop, not to mention the bookstore. But navigating this overcrowded place can be stressful - the opposite of a general bookstore's reputation for relaxation. The staff is predictably overworked and hence has no time for pleasantries. The west has recently discovered the magic ingredient - turmeric, so now they put it everywhere!! Skincare, shampoos, turmeric pills and even COFFEE. So Atticus has Golden latte which is basically a regular latte with a pinch of turmeric and ginger essence. It's okayish, not a great drink. The bookstore is great and has good collection of books. I wish the place was bigger to accommodate all the art enthusiasts bustling out of Art gallery, brimming with appreciation for finer things, shunning the Starbucks on the corner, as they rightly should. The workers are very nice and made me feel very welcome. My only complaint is that the music is very loud for a bookstore. Atticus has always been my go-to lively brunch and book spot in New Haven. I grew up here and Chapel Street is a prime location with lots of great food options as well. While it can be crowded and sometimes a bit cramped during peak hours, the food will have you leaving with both a smile on your face and a desire to return. It's one of those places to take the whole family, study for hours (Hi Yale folks!) or stop in for a coffee and danish. Your best bet is to come here early - doors open at 7am most days. Get cozy with a cappuccino and a good book. The menu is pretty minimal yet wholesome with healthy options. Do try the breakfast sandwich or eggs and greens. The wide selection of books is enough of a distraction and may also make you forget you ordered food. Note: you must purchase books before sitting down to eat if you're going to read and eat at the same time. It's only fair. Otherwise, who wants to stock brand new books with coffee and oil stains? Be courteous of the staff and they'll do the same for you. I've loved the waiters and book store clerks for years. And they seem to love the customers. read more

Atticus is a cute bookstore with a restaurant attached. It's a little confusing for me to grasp since it has a service restaurant instead of a cafe, and the kitchen is in the middle of the store. It makes me feel a little awkward to bring a laptop out to do work but it seems that they advise against this when there is a lunch rush. The coffee counter with scone offerings is different than the sit-down menu if that's what you're looking to do as well. There's also seems to be some confusion on who is actually waiting for seats and who is ordering takeout, which hopefully they can work out. +FAMOUS BLACK BEAN SOUP: This comes with a big hunk of bread, with a side of sour cream and onions. The onions were nice and crispy in comparison to the texture of the soup, which has a tasty pork base. -TRUFFLE MAC & CHEESE: Small portion for the price, and on the heavier side. The food here also comes with free bread and butter, which you can ask for more of. I wanted to like this place more than I actually did. One of the times we were here, my friends ordered the hummus sandwich and was told that it was unavailable much too late (after a substantial wait for our food already); they ended up ordering the mac and cheese, so half our table got is 15 minutes before the other half. While the waitress was really nice about it and it wasn't her fault, we really should've been notified earlier or had our meals come out at the same time. From the confusing layout (which was also really cramped) to the late notification, my experiences here were just okay. French toast: comes with bananas and is magical, cinnamon-y goodness!!! LUNCH Roasted Pear Salad: HIGHLY recommend; my favorite thing on the menu. I usually get this with chicken for more protein. :) Heads up: Atticus isn't really a place like Starbucks where you can just go and do work. From students reading their notes to friends catching up over a latte, Atticus cafe was bustling with people and activity when my friend and I walked in. The seating area is small and tables are placed close to each other. I had my head bumped a few times by people walking behind me. I ordered a hot Chai Latte. The drink was incredibly sweet and definitely not what I expected. It tasted more like milk mixed with sugar and cinnamon. My friend ordered an iced latte and enjoyed it. The guy basically handed us two menus and told us to just seat ourselves. I ordered the daily meat soup which was literally still cold when they served it to me. I tried to get the servers attention multiple times before I decided to just bring the food up to them myself to ask for it to be heated. But after bringing it back, it was still only lukewarm. Last time, I was so happy with the soup. But today, left disappointed and feeling sick after drinking half of it.
