It's okay. We got the dirty fried chicken sandwich with the lemony potatoes as a side. It's not the best chicken sandwich I had but not the worst. It's a bit overly fried for me but at least the chicken wasn't dried out. The slaw was a nice touch. I did not like the sauce. I liked the lemony potatoes better than the sandwich. Augie's on Main is a hidden gem if you are in Santa Monica! Family owned and run this place is the spot to be for the most tasty and flavorful gourmet food. We decided to split a chicken sandwich and a cheeseburger so that we could try both and we got the corn ribs and fries on the side. Both the burger and sandwich were very good, packing a lot of flavor in each. The corn ribs were surprisingly good and a must try if deciding on a sides. The fries were also spectacularly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The service is always excellent and efficient. Just know that there is only outside seating as it is a walk up window type of place. It was nice and warm outside though and great if you want some fresh ocean air. We dropped into Augie's on Main yesterday after visiting the Farmer's Market. Murphy the Doodle was welcomed warmly and enjoyed sitting on the patio with us where he mingled with other canine friends. From two-starred Michelin chef and Santa Monica native Josiah Citron (Citron and Melisse), the small eatery features such yummy dishes as Dirty Chicken Sandwiches, Roast Beef sandwiches, Salads and a plethora of yummy sides. The Dirty Chicken was a fried breast topped with tomato and pickles, plus sauce, and delicious coleslaw. My husband enjoyed the Roast Beef sandwich and we shared the Froggy Fresh Fries, Corn Ribs. and Mac and Cheese. Service was so nice and friendly and the ambience was casual and outdoorsy. Popped by for lunch on a Thursday. Street parking readily available with reasonable meters. Order at the counter and take a seat in their cute alley seating area or right on Ocean like we did to enjoy the sunshine. We both opted for the same thing: Roasted chicken. Tender (good size) strips on a SOFT and delicious baquette with argula and a dijon mustard spread. Served with a side of chicken drippings. The sandwich was perfect. Usually baquettes albeit delicious have a crust that is a bit too crusty and too tough to chew through easily. Not the problem here. The chicken is also so tender and spiced nicely. The real kick is the dijon mustard that coats the bottom. A real delight. We also got a side of the corn ribs served elote style. These were good but I have to say, that this is probably not a veggie for me. A lot healthier than the traditional elote corn served in cobless and that I avoid. But to each their own! I'll try another veggie next time! Service was great. I am always a bit skeptical about paying for service before it is delivered. Will I get bad service if I don't pay up? Am I wasting money on semi-table service? Don't worry! The food was delivered promptly and better yet, our server/counter person also gave us courtesy water BEFORE all the food arrived. One can get the "dirty chicken" at Michelin-starred Citrin for two for $86. At Augie's, you can try this "fancy" rotisserie chicken for $26 or so including two sides (with tax and tip). The dirty chicken plate is beautiful. It's perfect for the 'gram..but does it deliver on flavor? Unfortunately, the rotisserie chicken is quite bland. You will definitely need ketchup to give it flavor. The chicken reminds me of Whole Foods whole rotisserie chicken. It would be nice if they had some sauces other than ketchup packets available upon request. The Augie's rotisserie is not as juicy or delicious as the wood-fired rotisserie Peruvian chicken from Pollo a la Brasa in Gardena/Koreatown or Listo el Pollo in Reseda which are my favorite rotisserie chickens in LA. I did enjoy the options available on the sides menu. Once you look at the side options you will know that this is not your ordinary fast casual restaurant. My favorite was the brocollini. I love brocollini and I make it at home. It really pairs well with a nice protein. It is something that I enjoy ordering as a side at a steakhouse. The corn ribs "elote" was fine. I wasn't too crazy about the sauce. The next time I am in the area, I will try the fried chicken tenders. It would be interesting to try fried chicken from Michelin-starred chef, Josiah Citrin and head over to Joshua Skenes' Happies Handmade to compared the chicken tenders from two Michelin-starred chefs. You'll have to order from the touch screen, but there's someone available there if you have any questions or need help placing your order. Parking is a long Main Street. I imagine it would be more difficult to find parking over the weekend. read more

Ordered delivery because my husband was excited to try this place. Delivery was projected for 12:30. Food didn't until almost 1, which meant our daughter only had 5 minutes to eat before dance class :(. She did love the chicken tenders, though I was less impressed with my Asian crispy chicken salad. It was mostly noodles but instead of being crispy, they were stale. The chicken was dry. Would not get again. We'll see if I upgrade my review if I try a different dish next time. read more

Delicious chicken, incredible texture on the breading, fries were perfect, crispy and fluffy. Everything here tastes like someone actually thought about the components and constructed it with care. Prices were completely honest, way cheaper than I was expecting for such tasty food. Calm patio, really pleasant to eat at with the family. Great place to pick up a to-go order for lunch or dinner. I had heard about this place with the chef from the famed Mélisse Restaurant, so was excited to try Augie's. I had the Roasted Chicken Sandwich ($11.95) which is a generous amount of very tender roasted white meat chicken on a terrific baguette, topped with arugula and chicken drippings. I loved every bite! Was able to get the "chicken dripping" sauce on the side so it wasn't a total mess when I got the food home. You get a small "half chicken" and I enjoyed the white meat part better. Nice crunch on the breading that covered the chicken. The mushrooms and potato sides were good as well. Had lunch at Augie's On Main in Santa Monica today. Had a roast chicken sandwich. Sat outside. Some people call eating outside Al Fresco which was named after the Florentine renaissance nobleman Count Alberto Fresco, who popularized eating outside amongst the nobility. Prior to that only peasants ate outside. There is a very nice large outdoor seating area at Augie's On Main. The roast chicken sandwich was very good. Took me a few seconds to figure out how to eat it. Ate the chicken and the arugula with a fork. This left the roll, which I picked up with my fingers and ate. Couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do with the chicken drippings so didn't do anything with the chicken drippings. You use a machine inside to order (it has pictures of everything in case you aren't good at reading, although if you aren't good at reading you probably wouldn't be reading this review) and to pay. Then you go outside to a window that says "pick up here" and pick up your food there when it's ready. Spock would say that's logical. read more

But I ordered TWO of Augie's hot dogs and holy crap they were amazing. The bun is some sort of thick, buttered toast, and it held up perfectly. Augie's on Main is on Main St., the restaurant row in Santa Monica. Limited street meter parking, but behind the restaurant on Nielson is the city parking lot. Augie's is owned by Josiah who is the chef and owner of five star restaurants Citrin and Mélisse also in Santa Monica. I am a fan of both Citrin and Mélisse, and have dined there several times on special occasions, both offer upscale artful chef tasting menu courses and it's quite a dining experience. Was excited to try Augie's a casual dining take. The restaurant is small where you place the order on the touch screen pad and prepay. Only outdoor seating in the side and back of the building. Beware, there are ANNOYING FLIES, probably from not properly cleaned tables and areas. When your order is ready, your name will be called out at pick up order window, no table service whatsoever, so why bother tipping?! Have been here a couple times, my highlights as follows: the chicken sandwich was good not great, lacked flavor, probably wasn't marinated. The chicken breast was not crunchy, was rather soggy due to the slaw, which should have been place on the side. slaw of mostly thinly shredded cabbage was light, not too much sauce, a tad acidic but good california ratatouille is the vegetable stew in a tomato base was good but not solo because best eaten with the mashed potatoes made it taste delightful mashed potatoes was really good especially if eaten with the ratatouille charred corn ribs also really good but a bit challenging to eat because part of the corn cob body is attached Service was cordial and nice. The guy behind the counter helped with the tech ordering, as I had to edit and screen didn't have an edit button, but he guided me. The ordering process has notes for the kitchen but the kitchen is UNACCOMMODATING , ie I only eat white meat and neither chicken orders(dirty chicken and fried chicken) allows special requests. There's a chopped salad and I wanted ONLY white meat and that was NOT allowed. The kitchen staff is UNACCOMMODATING, NOT happy. For protein, The menu only offers chicken, beef burger and veggie burger...Limited! Owner and chef Josiah came out to the back patio but didn't greet the customers. As I was leaving, I saw the owner Josiah, again no greeting or a thank you for dining here from him, I guess he was too cool to be nice to customers. Taking the high road, I took the initiative and I greeted him and informed him I am a big fan, frequent diner at Citrin and Mélisse. I have posted reviews of both restaurants. I did share my unpleasant dining experience about Augie's and suggested he add to the menu, for people who are not hugh fans of chicken, maybe offer fish since we are a couple blocks from the beach! If you can't dine at Citrin or Mélisse, and you want to try chef Josiah's casual dining creation, Augie's is worth a visit. read more

We ordered Augies the night before Thanksgiving because we didn't feel like cooking! It was my first time trying it so I was not sure what to expect! Even with a takeout order it was so good! I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food! The Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and coleslaw were extra tasty. The chicken was the star of the show! They cooked it perfect and flavored it well. It was tender and juicy! My husband got the chicken sandwich and that was also so good!! We definitely want to try more things from Augies! I went today for my first visit. Let me start this review by saying that I am a huge fan or everything chef Josiah Citrin has done, especially his previous collaborations with Raphael Lunetta. I think I can safely say that I've been to each of his restaurants numerous times. Today, I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and a side of the cabbage slaw. I loved the slaw. The sandwich was very good too. It was breast meat, which normally I don't prefer as I find it too dry. This was very moist. The sandwich wasn't as spicy as I expected, so I asked for a side of hot sauce. I guess next time I'll try it with the Fermented Green Chili Sauce. I plan to go back again very soon. Now, a somewhat personal note for those that knew Augie. My wife was Augie's teacher in elementary school. It is heartbreaking that he is gone. If you have kids, please talk to them and stress the importance for them to get help when they feel down, and to not take any medication that they get from a friend or someone not authorized to dispense medication. I was craving fried chicken, but found Augie's on Main instead. I'm glad that I found this. Their chicken is like a gourmet shake n' bake chicken. I felt healthier than fried chicken (but is it actually? I hope so). The chicken had a wonderful crunch to it, and quite juicy. I wasn't the biggest fan of the potatoes. It was too saucy for my taste -- to the point of being soggy, and a bit too sweet for me. Too saucy, too sticky, to sweet. I did enjoy the corn ribs. However, the concept of corn ribs is a little perplexing. The cobs are still attached to the back of the corn, making it a little more difficult to eat. I would have preferred it to either be on the cob or just kernels. Seems like extra work to have to slide the ribs off the rest of the cob...just keep the cob. Been meaning to try this spot for awhile and while solid, it's not very memorable or worthy of frequent visits. Stopped by on a weekday for lunch and there was only one other customer there. We ordered at the counter and were told seating was on the side/behind the building so we headed over to sit down. After 15 minutes the wait felt a bit long, so we walked back to the counter for an update on our food, only to see it sitting there on the counter without an employee in sight. It's not the biggest deal in the world, but a number system or a runner would go a long way with how the restaurant is set up. We got the roasted chicken sandwich and the fried chicken sandwich to split between the two of us. I thought the bread was really solid on the roasted chicken sandwich and would definitely order it again if the restaurant experience was a little more inviting. The fried chicken sandwich was decent, but nothing to write home about.
