Probably the best CROISSANT I've had in SoCal. BREAD AND BUTTER made an actual croissant with tons of layers instead of "airy bread". You could taste the butter!! Soooo good. Got their MORNING BUN with Cinnamon and Cardamom and it was great with coffee. I didn't even get to taste the CARAMEL GLAZED CROISSANT coz the hubs inhaled it. I'm guessing it was good too. The line to order on a Friday morning was long. I want to say it went out the door and around the corner, but there really isn't an "indoor" so "out the door" should be expected. We've been coming here every Sunday since it opened, but I guess I had enough. It seems like the barista (it's always the same guy) has an attitude. They would get my order wrong pretty much every time. I would ask "for here" and for an extra shot and it was only twice (!) that they did it right. And never in all this time they apologized once. You leave them tips, you smile, you support them as a new business and when the barista gives you a cup to go without an extra shot and you say that it's not what you ordered, he gives you the look. A cute little bakery in Santa Monica! Parking was pretty easy since they have a dedicated lot. When I got there around 11AM on a Sunday morning, there were about 15 ppl ahead of me and I waited about 20 minutes. So you could say they're pretty efficient. Unfortunately they ran out of savory pastries and was left with sweet pastries and sandwiches. First I tried the bostock which is supposed to have orange marmalade. It was good but I feel like the orange flavor was very muted. Their sweet danish also had orange and again, I could barely taste it. All were very delicious but my two favorites were the morning but and coconut cake - both perfectly moist and baked well. I only had a bite of the coconut cake and my friend said he was going to do the same but then proceeded to devour in 30 seconds that's how good it was. They've nailed it. It's rare for a place with such good pastries to also have a good coffee selection, so that's definitely a plus! The sandwiches are also very good and on delicious homemade bread. Being quite a new comer especially occupying a space at the heart of Santa Monica's Main Street, you surely have expected its popularity still resides at its peak. Fortunately I was thinking 2 steps ahead, placing my pre-order online early morning around the opening time to secure my Walnut Croissant. Yes, you heard it right, walnut. Prolly kinda uncommon, but it's indeed one of their signature pastries, which was the closest comparison to any other places' almond croissant. I arrived right at noon, which was also my pickup time, and their pastries showcase was almost empty and there's literally no single croissant left. LOL, even the servers told me I made smart move by pre-ordering. I finished my gigantic croissant on the spot. It wasn't reheated yet it's still so good. The price was prolly quite high being close to $10, but the size and how packed the walnut paste stuffing was, made it totally worthy. I get it a pastry puff can be since it's made with butter but it was very oily maybe the combination with the cheese? Both hubby and I found it too salty. OMG! Santa Monica is a trek for me and b+B was on my list to try. I was anticipating it so much that I couldn't sleep. It did not disappoint. I love croissants and their cultured butter croissant is one of the best I've ever had! It is big and crispy and flaky and light and so buttery. I felt like there was a big chunk of melted butter in the middle... it was so amazing. I also had to get the walnut croissant which is similar to an almond croissant but with a walnut filling. It is slight sweet and heavily filled. The barista gave me the pastry and I was surprised by the heft! It is a heavy croissant and absolutely delicious! Two of the most amazing croissants I've ever had and I have FOMO for all the other pastries that I did not get the opportunity to try. I am definitely coming back. The coffee was nice and darkly roasted and was delicious, but the pastries totally eclipsed the coffee experience and that is ok. Street parking. Casual. Great service. My husband, our puppy, and I all went to Bread + Butter today for a light breakfast. Our pup was in good company as just about everyone had their "man's best friend" along for the ride. The line was out the door onto Main Street, but we waited anyway. The line moved very quickly and soon enough I was in the throes of butter heaven. The bakery is the size of a shoe box but brimming with beautiful display cases. There is a menu outside so you can make your selections before you enter-but don't! You'll change your mind a dozen times before you order because everything looks so good! We loved the Morning Bun with cinnamon and cardamom. It was perfectly baked and loaded with flavor. Our pup may or may not have had a taste and agreed it's a great way to start your morning! We also had the Ham + Cheese Croissant that was light and buttery with Gruyere and Fra' Mani smoked ham. We splurged and ordered the last Sausage Roll available (Saturdays and Sundays only)-a house made puff pastry wrapped around a Peads & Barnetts pork sausage. OMG! The puff pastry makes it into my own Butter Hall of Fame. The sesame seeds also added a little extra something that we loved!
