This cafe is pretty busy on a Sunday morning during brunch rush hour, which is a good sign. It's small on the inside and very cozy, with what seems to be a family run restaurant. The decor is minimal, and food is served on throwaway styrofoam containers and plates, but the flavor is pretty gosh-darn good. We came for breakfast burritos and we're not disappointed. If you can get over the price hike of the last year and feel okay paying $11-12 for a breakfast burrito, then you'll walk away feeling great. We got the bacon and Portuguese sausage breakfast burrito and it was moist and delicious on the inside, and ooey gooey on the inside with cheese. Overall, pretty good breakfast burritos. Ordered spam fried rice. Rice was very loose, I've never had loose fried rice. First thoughts, this isn't fried rice, this is just freshly cooked rice tossed with shoyu. And the rice reminded me of uncle Ben's, so idk what they used to make it so slippery/loose. The rice doesn't seem to be cooked with eggs either. I grew up with fried rice being fried with 1-2 eggs so that the rice has a yellowish film. This was just shoyu rice with a lil bit spam. The spam was hard to find and very thinly sliced. If I had to guess, there was maybe 2-3 thin slices of spam at most, cut in small squares. I added two over easy eggs for an extra $3 and that was the only saving grace. I didn't finish my plate and left still hungry. It would taste better if it tasted like regular medium grain sticky rice, thicker and more pieces of spam, and cooked with at least one egg. Maybe then it would taste authentic. This is not fried rice you would find anywhere in Hawaii. This was also my second time here and I didn't care for it the first time. My hubby really wanted to try it so I said ok I can give it a second chance. He ordered Neil's plate, but he said it was just ok and would not come here again. Thanks to Nadine C. for doing research of Hawaiian food in Los Angeles. Amazingly, Hawaiian food is not as available in the San Gabriel Valley, when compared to the South Bay, specifically Gardena. I had asked the wife to make Spam Musubi for Spam Musubi Day, but never got to it, so I had to get my fix at Aunties, and feel it's actually better than what my wife makes; it may also be I was really hungry too. The loco moco is also excellent here, and served as a huge portion with rice, beef and egg, along with a savory gravy topping which was amazing. I would surely recommend this restaurant for authentic Hawaiian food and probably Japanese food too. The food is steaming hot and fresh! read more

Happened to be in the Torrance/Gardena area early in the morning on a Friday for some errands and got hungry. Decided on Aunties Cafe thanks to other Yelp reviews! I dined in and got the Bacon and Portuguese Sausage Breakfast Burrito per other review recommendations, and they weren't wrong! It was a pretty amazing breakfast burrito! The flavors popped with unique savory goodness. The texture was on point with good balance between the cheese, potatoes, meats, tortilla, and sauce! It came with a green salsa that had a tiny perfectly tasty kick. I had a cup of coffee to wash it all down. The coffee is self serve with the rest of the soft drinks and tasted like great diner coffee. Parking is free and easy in a shopping plaza. On a Friday morning around 8-9am, it wasn't too busy but business seemed to pick up after 9am. Inside, nothing fancy. Felt like a small family diner on the island with Hawaiian music playing in the background! Overall highly recommend. We enjoyed an early (7am) Saturdate breakfast of roast loco moco, karaage chicken & waffles, and pancakes. The locals were already having their breakfast and coffee. Gave me that hometown vibes kind of feel. A couple of Gardena PD were about to eat their breakfast when they got a call and the cashier didn't hesitate to hold their breakfast until their return and said she had to do the same thing the day prior for firefighter. This used to be a regular go-to breakfast spot that I really liked. But sometimes it's the little things that matter. I don't think decaf coffee is that unusual for it to be a "special request" item here that I have to wait for it every time. It never was an issue before. Now decaf seems to be too much trouble for Aunties. Before when I ordered, it was either ready or one of the girls would happily make a pot. Not anymore. Now it's "made to order" and the guy has to explain it to me as if I'm being a pain in the ass. And when I asked if I could get a decaf refill, the guy (owner?) hesitated and asked, "Oh, you want a refill?" Well yeah, I just asked for one. His response was that decaf has to be specially made (Keurig probably) and will take a few minutes. But it's the way he responded, like he really didn't want to go through the trouble for my one cup of decaf. So I said don't worry about it and sat back down at the table. Now most servers would comprehend that I wanted a refill and just make it. But this guy thought it more important to save his extra Keurig K-pod and let me go without. We happened across this place while we were nearby for the vet, and it was pretty good! To be honest, I thought the fried chicken and marinated meat were way too sweet for my personal preference but I can see why people like them. The chicken breading was great; I just personally can't really eat super sweet foods. My review is for the roasted pork because that was phenomenal and after trying it, I had to order another portion to take home. It was so tender and fatty in all the right place, practically falling apart in my fork. The gravy was amazing over rice and the pork was savory and perfectly seasoned. So ONO!!! My hubby and I were in Carson earlier and just happened to take a drive down towards the 405. We happened to find this family-run, hole in the wall spot. What we ordered: - Max Moco - Tofu Bowl - Fries for our lil one - Fountain Drinks The surprising additional items we ended up with: - Waffles w/ whipped cream, special house syrup & fresh berries on top - Fried Rice w char siu How did we end up with those other 2 items? Well, we just happened to be here on the day that they'd done a photo shoot of various food items. And so, rather than waste the food, it was offered to us a few minute after its preparation and few minute after their being photographed. Everything was so tasty. I swear to you, that was a damned good waffle. It was crispy but light and it was just sweet enough with the whipped cream and berries. I didn't use any butter of maple syrup on it. It was just like having dessert. I'd definitely order that next time. My little one had been sick and not eating much but once she had some, she was hooked. She had at least 1/2 the waffle and ate all the strawberries. I'm glad she enjoyed it but I was even more ecstatic that she was eating at all. My tofu bowl was tasty and healthy. The portions were nice and everything was fresh. I liked that the tofu was grilled and not fried. The sauce wasn't quite a teriyaki sauce but I also couldn't describe it to you. It is just one of those that you've gotta taste on your own. Aside from my 2 slabs of grilled tofu over rice, I also got some broccoli florets with that. Speaking to the owner, he explained that it was their healthier dish. Healthier or not, tofu is something I enjoy quite a bit. So, it wouldn't surprise me if I returned to order the tofu bowl again. My hubby ordered it and I swear it really could feed 2-3 people just because of the amt of protein on the one plate: hamburger patty, eggs, Portuguese sausage, corned beef and hash, and one other sausage. It is very tasty. The gravy was good, not flavor masking or overwhelming. The whole dish just screams down-home aloha food, just like your grandma, family friend, AUNTIE would make for you. I think that is one of the things that I like most about this place. The folks who work here make the dining room feel like you're just having a nice time at the family home, watching the news or catching part of the game. There is nothing stuffy about this place. Order two meals here, both meals had small black hairs in it.. Called in, the person who answered the phone said that was "UNUSUAL" because the staff wear hair nets. No sir it's not unusual if you hire people with hair or facial hair. A hair net doesn't mean squat. Also, the cashier wasn't wearing a hair net. we were in the Gateway Strip mall looking for a place to eat and i saw the sign, then the menu, and decided it was worth a shot. you order and pay and find a seat. there are about 5 booths and a couple of tables. I ordered the fried chicken and my friend ordered the teriyaki beef sandwich. We were not disappointed! The teri beef was flavorsome and tender and came with skinnyish fries. My chicken was tasty and they gave me katsu sauce upon my request, though it did not really need sauce at all. the one thing to note is that, we were told, they change the menu every 6 month, so if something doesn't sell, it may be gone, even if it was really good! My fiancée and I ended up sharing one dish. That dish was Rudy's Loco. This monster plate was a loco moco but not just with a hamburger patty. It also had Portuguese sausage and corned beef hash. The plate came out nice and steamy and we waited a little bit for it to cool. I'm glad it came out this way because we went to another Hawaiian restaurant nearby and our food was cold or undercooked at the other location. The service was great here. The cashier was nice and was transparent about the portion sizes. We almost got our own dishes but this one was good enough to share. I also asked about the Lee's Sandwiches nearby so I'll probably review that later. The gravy on the plate was nice and creamy and when breaking the egg yolk and mixing it all in with the rice and meat, it was like a fiesta in your mouth. Did I mention we shared this? The ambiance looks like an ordinary fast food joint and the employees were very friendly as well. The owner or the manager always check on his customer, which is a huge plus to me in my opinion. The food though stands out! I ordered their Royal Plate that consist of sausages and other sort of meats with scramble egg in a fried rice base pallet. The combination is really packed with flavor and on top of that.. their awesome teriyaki sauce that seals the deal. The employee that serves us recommended their teriyaki base dishes and I see why now. Their teriyaki sauce is outstanding and nothing can compare. Here at Aunties Cafe it sure did feel like I was at home feeling the warmth and love of family with bonding over good food and good conversation. I came with my mom and we decided to split a Rudy's Loco Moco with bacon fried rice and small side of mac. I also got a free spam musubi with Yelp check in. I had already heard their portions are huge but I was still pleasantly surprised when my Rudy's Loco Moco came out. There were two hamburger patties, Portuguese sausage and corned beef hash patty with three eggs and lots and lots of gravy! They say you know a good loco loco based off their gravy and I have to say they do know their Hawaiian gravy here. The gravy was thick, rich and delicious. Though I am a fan of fried rice; I wish I had gotten white rice because the gravy would've been great with the fried rice. The Portuguese sausage was slightly salty but the hamburger patties were great. Overall an intense dish that made for a great lunch and dinner plate (yes, I said dinner because we had plenty for leftovers). The spam musubi was also a nice treat. It was large in size. It was also fresh. We also liked the mac salad that we got as a side. It had some snow peas in it too. I started this review saying I felt at home and this was thanks to the friendliness and great service we got here. The owner came out and chatted with us. We got some history on the restaurant (They also own TNT in Torrance; former owners of the Gardena Bowl Cafe). He also shared how this place was all about comfort food. We also got to try samples of their chicken karaage and their roast pork (Both were so tasty and I definitely want to come back here and get plates with those meats). It was a nice surprise to find a new addition to this bend. I figure I'd check it out one day sooner or later. And then there it was. It was left up to me to decide on Father's Day grub. I already knew everyone in my party would be able to find something they like on Auntie's menu, so off we went! We walked in a little bit after 11am and only two tables were unoccupied. They are popular, for sure. There is no table service - order at the counter to be delivered to your table. On a personal preference, the way I rate a Hawaiian joint is by its loco moco. However, the three peeps who came along with me all decided on a moco (2 loco moco with bacon fried rice, one Rudy moco with gravy on the side.) They would let me have a taste, so I opted Shari's fried rice with an order of over easy egg on top. GodNiece and I are both on Yelp so we took advantage of their check-in offer: a musubi or a drink. (We both went for the musubi - sausage for me, spam and egg for her.) We were both also curious about their karaage. We wanted to try it without the waffles, but we didn't see that option, so we just went for the entire order. (I know, we should have asked.) Ten minutes and the karaage and waffles were delivered to our table along with maple syrup. Do not be fooled by the karaage's appearance. It may not look appealing, but it is delish. Juicy with perfect seasoning and perfect crunch. Next delivered was the Rudy moco (it's a loco moco with added corned beef hash and Portuguese sausage.) I was specific about placing the gravy on the side because this is my Mom's order and she would prefer it that way, so seeing the gravy doused on the entire place was a little disappointing. Since Mom didn't mind it, I let it go. I got to try a bite of each protein. The beef patty was nicely seasoned and not too dry. The Portuguese sausage was mediocre at best, but delicious. The corned beef hash was hashed with way too much potatoes. All who took a bite of it agreed it was more a potato has then corned beef. The corned beef taste had drowned in all that starch. (So glad I didn't get the corned beef and hash breakfast combo since that was a second choice!) My order of Shari's fried rice was a bit on the salty end, but I prefer my food a little bit on the salty side, so it was perfect for me. It may draw a different response to those who are a bit sensitive to it, though. I would have also preferred the rice to be a little more fluffy. Otherwise, it was pretty good. Our host came by apologizing for the gravy gaffe on Mom's Rudy loco. That simple act was enough for me to let the initial disappointment go, so we all told her it was fine, not to worry about it. She said the kitchen is working on correcting it and are making a new set for her as we spoke. I told her that it was fine and there's no need for that (since it was more than enough when she acknowledged the mistake) and mentioned it wasn't that big of a deal - Mom still ate through her dish with no complaints. She insisted, saying they're already working on it and are willing to give it to us at no charge. Talk about generous. Since it was already on the works (and I don't like wasting food), why not. I asked to just have it packed to-go. (SO NICE!) GN and Pops both enjoyed their loco moco's, no complaints there. At the end of our meal, we had the issue of TOO MUCH FOOD. They really are generous with their helpings. We all had enough for a 2nd, maybe even a 3rd meal. GN asked for a few to-go boxes, and that's when we realized they forgot about our complimentary musubis. They were apologetic for this mistake and promised it'd be out soon. We were too full, so we asked to have that packed up as well. It took a little time, but in fairness, we shouldn't be complaining. It was complimentary. FOOD: 5. Delicious and with generous servings. SERVICE: 5. I would have ranked it lower if they didn't own up to their mistakes, but they did just that AND made up for it immediately. VALUE: 5. You get lotsa food for what they charge. PARKING: Shared with other eateries and businesses. Can get busy during lunch and dinner hours. OVERALL: 5. They are fairly new (only been around for 4 months) so I'm sure they're still working out the kinks. We're definitely fans. Coming back to try more stuff off their menu. After someone at the booth left, she asked if we wanted to sit there - we did and she got it cleaned up for us. This place is self serving - the only thing they'll bring out to you is your meal. I didn't feel like there was a huge kimchee presence that made the dish scream, "KIMCHEE!" The hot links I had were just...spicy, but there was no real flavor in them. My husband said that after a while he wanted to stop eating the Aloha Royal because there wasn't much flavor in it. Also, I think they are still working out some kinks because the food took a very long time to come out - I'm sure that they will work this out though as they have just opened not too long ago. I am so glad I dropped in with my kids for lunch at Aunties! I had it on my "to try" list for awhile and finally made it in. The staff was very welcoming and kind. We placed our order and our food arrived very quickly, hot and delicious. I ordered the fried chicken lunch plate. Wow! It was so much food! The chicken was piping hot and absolutely delicious. New restaurant so them may be working out some kinks, went here on the recommendation of a friend, portion size is average, flavor is average. Got the Royal, basically rice and some meat, not much else other Hawaiian restaurants have bean sprouts and maybe a little cabbage in the mix, this was something that I could have done at home. One of the co workers had the fried baloney with tater tots, sandwich was OK however they did nail the tater tots. There are so many other Hawaiian restaurants in the area that Aunties Cafe will need to step up their game if they want to survive. Undecided on if we will give them another try. read more
