At the last minute we had to cancel and the restaurant was 100% understanding. We had no issues with canceling. Two months later, we were able to rebook. Ordering was easy using the online catering form to decide what we wanted. When we had questions about portion & how much was needed, suggestions were provided. The order taker was super friendly and helpful. We paid for delivery and the food arrived on time. We had noodles, teri and lahaina fried chicken, bbq beef, kalua pork, ramen salad, Mac salad and rice. No one left hungry. Portions were plenty and everything was onolicious! I have been to Hawaii. A friend of mine won a give away by stuffing a ballot box at a grocery store, and then he gave me the plus one ticket. Was it a trip gotten via ill ways? Back then I did not think of that. And now that I do, I say the breeze of Hawaii would help anyone understand that what he did was a youth Indiscretion, like going for a swim in the cloak of darkness while only wearing a lei. Going to Back Home in Lahaina was not a trip back to the Big Island, I won't say that, but it was a moment of joy inspired heavily by a Hawaiian decor that both bordered on the tragically kitsch and the whimsically fun depending on where you stood or sat. But the true treasure of this Hawaiian micro-isle is their fare-- no doubt about that. After the meal my friend Conrad and I went to the front of the house, where they have the to go section. This is where the kitsch became most circus-y. Although, I did not clip everyhing, I did clip a make your own lei kit, hawaiian stickers, and other things that make the place feel like a tourist trap for Hawaiian hopefuls. For me, the tawdry lessened the impact of the Aloha I heard from the dining room. In sharp contrast, the main dining room had this mural of a whale coming out of deep blue water with Hawaiian florals on the edge of the land that was more transportive to the land where coconuts fall from palm trees and hula skirts are a must for every closet. The main room dining room also had these string lights and sphere paper lamps that made me feel like I was eating at a night market where I could see the stars of a Hawaiian skiy but it was both day time, and there was a roof above me. The food was the situation that needs to be address though, with great respect and admiration because almost every bite was supremely good. My friend Conrad and I first shared a Lahaina Platter- basically their appetizer platter or to be Hawaiian their pupu platter, and please do not go for the easy joke it is not that funny and really kind of base and gross, if the wrong person is making it. The must of the spot, unsurprisingly, is their Lahaina fried chicken. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and kind of like karage chicken but different with the spices and flavors and ocean fronts of Hawaii. I know I did not make sense but I gotta believe that Hawaiian culture made the dish great and Hawaiian culture is partly define by waterfront property. My favorite things from the dish were the Lumpia which are often described as Filipino eggrolls. The pork meat was flavorful, the paper wrapping was on point, like wonderfully thin yet still structurally strong, not crispy, more firm with crisp. The Cinderella story of the day was the spam musubi. The saltiness of the seaweed was present but not in an overblown way, the sweetness of their teriyaki sauce carried savory notes that uplifted the sweet notes, in a wonderful way, their sticky rice was textbook fluffy and fabulous. Overall, I would nitpick flaws. And for this review I do not feel like finding the wrong cracks on a whole coconut skin. My main dish was their bbq grilled chicken plate. I could not finish everything at the restaurant. I had cold left overs at home and they hit the spot in this way that really earned my respect, because cold left overs still holding strong that is like seeing a shooting star while you enoy Mai Tais in a white beach---- living the improbable dream. What was best out of the bunch was their Lahaina chicken. And again, even though the fried goodness had withdrawn, the flavor and textured that remained was still, in a way, intact and in some ways optimal. I just shivered admitting that. I was happy with the food overall, and want to communicate that it was a strong showing for a place that sits within a strip mall. Do not just a shore by the lack of its crashing wave sounds. I also love the name of this place. Like I went back to Lahaina, has personality. Like it is a name that drips from the tongue even though it is long. Pluis, saying multiple times in a conversation makes the place feel important. Conrad had some cheesecake with jello and he loved it. I did not try it, but it was unique and I did not think such a dessert existed. The crust was walnut, I would have thought it would be Macadamia. This place is located in a plaza so there is plenty of parking. I love the vibes inside. It felt like beachy/Hollister type vibes. The staff was very nice and prompt. Their menu and portion sizes are massive. This is what we ordered. I ordered their poke plate. It comes with three sides usually comes with rice Mac salad or you can substitute for a Chinese chicken salad, which is what I did and a side of fries this plate was awesome, but the dressing that comes with it is a little too powerful kind of like that wasabi mustard type of dressing I'm pretty sure they have other options but next time I'll know my friend ordered one of their combo plates, which was also huge massive portions with the meat, a wonton soup and the appetizer sampler. Decided to have Hawaiian food and try a new place but maybe I should've stuck with soemthing familiar? The friendly staff and the amazing interior was so welcoming alongside the well priced drinks with all different games on each TV made this place feel amazing. Once I started off with the spam musubi, I was surprised by how it was bland and un flavorful it was. Even though it had sauce on top it tasted like I just had rice with meat as it was lacking the seasoning. Our entrees arrived, which looked phenomenal, but was then again hit with blandness even though it was smothered in sauce. The burger was bland and the Mac salad tasted like mush. I visited Back Home in Lahaina last Friday. I called to check if they have Poke Nachos, once they said yes I was excited and placed my order for pick up. Once I got to my car I opened up my container and I was disappointed. This was not poke nachos it was more so poke with a side of chips. The poke was very fresh so that is definitely the good part, just wasn't what I was expecting. This was my second time at Back Home in Lahaina. I don't like to write negative reviews but I just want to set expectations for people going. The won tons in the won ton saimin are not good at all. They are hard and the meat just tastes weird. Just get the regular saimin, not the Big Bruddah version. I ordered something small, the ahi poke appetizer that came with won ton chips. I'm sorry, but the poke was terrible. The fish felt apart and dissolved in your mouth. I think it was either over mixed, or marinated too long where it broke down the fish itself. I couldn't even eat most of it. Such a waste. The service is always really good and the people are really nice. To start, you need to get the coconut haupia cheesecake. I do not like cheesecake, but this was the lightest, freshest, most wonderful dessert I ordered in 2025. I ordered just the plain haupia pudding, which I was eating outside. One of the guests told me I needed to try the cheesecake, and ended up buying me a slice when he went in to order his food. I am so so thankful for that man because it was really really delicious and I will definitely be back. This place is absolutely amazing. I got a takeout plate and some desserts, but I am so eager to come back to try more of the menu. I got the combo plate with beef, kahlua pork, and chicken katsu. This was my family's first time visiting Back Home in Lahaina in Carson, and overall, it was a mixed experience. I'm not sure if we'd come back for a full meal, but there were definitely a few standout items. The absolute best part of our visit was the dessert. We tried the Haupia cheesecake and the chocolate cheesecake, and both were excellent. Creamy, flavorful, and easily the highlight of the meal. We also sampled some of their shortbread cookies with chocolate chips, which were good, but the cheesecakes are really what we'd come back for--especially the Haupia cheesecake. That's the one item we'd 100% repurchase. For the main dish, I ordered the fried chicken plate, which came with rice, mac salad, and a side salad. The fried chicken itself was very good--nicely seasoned with a subtle sweetness that worked well. Unfortunately, the sides didn't live up to the chicken. The mac salad, which is usually one of my favorites, was lacking flavor, and the salad was very simple--just cabbage tossed with sesame oil and sesame seeds. Overall, the food was hit or miss. It is all indoor seating and the restaurant feels very bright and open with lots of windows and fun decor. They have a fairly large selection on their menu and everything is very fairly priced. They were out of a couple of items the day that we were there but they were kind enough to offer substitutions for the things that they didn't have. Every dish that came out was massive in portion size and would definitely have been enough for two people to share. The noodles in the fried saimin were a little bit overcooked, but the Hawaiian bbq chicken made up for it. It was perfectly tender and had great flavor. The somen salad also came in a heaping portion and was very refreshing on a hot day. The wonton min had decent flavor for the broth. While I appreciate the value, the choices I selected were okay. My Loco Moco was ordered with an over easy egg that came out over hard. When I'm in the area and/or crave Hawaiian food, THIS my go to. Consistently good. My wife is from Carson and we've been coming here for two decades plus. The kalbi ribs and their staple ( to me anyway) Lahaina fried chicken ( both tender and well marinated) cannot be touched anywhere with a 100 mile radius. Pro tip: get the fried rice with your plate ( Portuguese sausage is our preference) - add Ahi Poke and fried wonton ( chef's kiss). On Friday nights, have a beer, enjoy the live band, and dance of some calories. My daughter suggested we try this place. My wife was pointing on the mural on the wall, which was from a street we visited when we were in LaHaina a few years ago. She knew exactly where it was. She ordered a glass of tea, and I went for a 16 ounce glass of their Longboard Beer. All in all the food was plentiful and tasty. Service was solid. Parking is available just past the business, but make sure you park in the general parking, not the chiropractor's lot. There are signs - don't do it. The Fried Chicken was room temperature at best, but the flavor was decent. The Chicken Breast was just grilled chicken with sauce drizzled on top. The Hawaiian BBQ Beef was good. The teriyaki sauce served here tastes a little strange compared to other restaurants. The ramen cabbage salad was interesting as well. I'd never had noodles mixed into my salad before.
