I would have left more stars if it weren't for the rude interaction with the front desk girl. I am a teacher and a big part of why I go to Auric is because of the teacher discount. I called before and made sure they are still offering that and was told that they do still offer that discount. When I was paying at the end the girl helping me did not give me that discount. Hard to believe, but I've been getting my hairs-did at Au Salon for over two years now. I happened upon this spot one random day I found myself strolling down Northwest 23rd looking particularly haggard. And with the exception of when I first moved to the city, Au Salon is the only place I've ever had my hair cut in Portland since. I'm happy to call myself a loyal client and can't sing their praises enough. Au Salon is a polar opposite of the kind of nightmare establishments frequently featured on cable television reality programs like Tabatha's Salon Takeover (of which I am a huge fan). The owner, Jo, is an enduring professional who has shown me consistent attention and gratitude with each of my visits; shamefully, she remembered my name long before I was ever able to remember hers and is one of the reasons I continue to give this salon my business. The other reason is her staff of highly capable, friendly individuals from the top down -- but in particular, my stylist and buddy, Jason, who gives stellar customer service and a bad ass haircut/beard trim at every one of my appointments. From the second I walked through the door, I knew that I had found my go-to place for hair. Even though it was less than a half hour until closing, they squeezed me in with the amazingly talented Alison, who actually LISTENED to what I wanted and made suggestions as how to best shape my unruly mane before she began chopping away. Alison worked quickly and confidently, and I emerged with what is probably the best haircut I've ever had-- seriously. When I asked about a product that I'd read about, Alison brought some over and showed me how to apply it and work it through. When I decided (with no pressure from anyone) to purchase the product, Alison wrote notes (including a diagram) to remind be how best to use it. Au Salon is a little pricey-- $36, although they give a discount for first-timers, so my haircut only cost $21. This worked well in their favor because now I know that it's worth shelling out $15 more next time. I would, and DO, recommend this place (especially Alison) to anyone who wants a great haircut in an unpretentious environment from someone who will listen to and work with you to make your hair look great. read more

The wonderful Jason has noticed things and taught me things about my hair that I never knew. He explains everything he's doing, some of it fairly obscure. I don't normally go out to salons to do my hair, but I definitely do not regret going here! I have only been in Oregon for a short amount of time but I'm glad that I found this salon. But in particular, meeting Drew. SHE IS AMAZING!! She is the sweetest person and literally did wonders to my hair. My hair is naturally black and I wanted to try something new by going to a more light blonde/grey. When I showed her a picture of the "if possible color" style I wanted my hair, she said we can try to get it done but might not look exactly like the picture because she didn't want to damage my hair (which of course is completely understanding). She did it even BETTER than I wanted it to be or hoped it would be. She is so talented. I can't let anyone else ever touch my hair since I've met her. I highly recommend going to her if you want to get your hair done. I went to her twice so far and there has been no disappointments. 10/10. read more

I have been going to Au Salon for over 10 years and I truly believe this place is magical! Most importantly I feel confident that not only will I have beautiful locks each time I leave the salon, but I know how to use all of my products and hot tools. When you have thick hair you know a good hair cut from a bad one... I spent the first twenty years of my life with poofy, unruly hair, and now I love my hair and constantly get complimented on the color, cut and style. You can tell that communication is very important to all of the stylists. They are great at making sure you understand how to style your hair on your own day-to-day, and help you find the best cut and color for your lifestyle. Another really important facet to this salon is that they keep up with times while still maintaining a comfortable atmosphere. I look forward to my visits because of the warmth of the experience and to see what the other clients are doing as well. My mother, sister, and girlfriends all frequent Au Salon because it is simply the best. That's right - I'm reviewing a salon. Don't give me a bad time or I'll hit you with my purse! Although I spent decades with long hair, it was fine and straight (read: stringy) and I never liked it. Until about 6 months ago, I had been keeping it quite short. We're talking 3/8". I know, because I buzzed it myself with a 3/8" guard on the clippers. There I am in my Yelp profile pic, all buzzed. I was fine with that. Then I saw a pic of myself (from a Yelp event, no less) and I looked pretty much bald. Not that there's anything wrong with that - some of my best friends are bald and they look marvelous. Though I do not consider myself vain, I realized that I am NOT bald and wondered what it would be like to have hair again. So I put the clippers away and waited. When I was looking a bit shaggy, I decided that trimming it was beyond my abilities. I went to a neighborhood barber shop - the trim was OK if not very exciting. Several weeks later the shagginess returned and I returned to the same shop. A different barber sent me home where I complained to my wife that I now looked like a Republican! Don't get upset - I have several good friends who are Republicans. In a moment of weakness that I later came to regret, I even voted for one once. I just don't want to look like one. "You need to go to someone who knows what they're doing" was my wife's response. "Go to Josette". When we moved to Portland 5 years ago, Ronda had been going to the same stylist (Barbara) for most of 20 years. To find a replacement closer to our new home, she visited salon after salon in our neighborhood with Barbara along, evaluating salons, products, stylists to see which would make the grade. Barbara was strong in her recommendation that Josette at Au Salon was the one. Ronda has been thrilled with Josette's artistry - those of you who've seen her hair will know why. Deep down, I knew Ronda was right. Next time I started getting shaggy, I made an appointment with Josette. First let me say that Josette is a sweetheart and I thoroughly enjoy every minute I spend in her presence. Second, she knows hair! She immediately assessed the damage I had been subjected to by the barber and let me know that correcting it would take a few cuts. After the first, I looked pretty good. She expertly cut parts that were left too long and left parts that needed to grow out to give the right shape to match my beard. She took into consideration that I am never without a hat while outdoors and went for a cut that would look good with or without my hats. Two cuts by Josette later, I'm almost there. My hair looks marvelous. This from a guy who spent the first 62 years of his life not once liking his hair. It's not all Josette mind you. My hair turning white was not only an improvement over the "dirty blond" former color, it also changed in texture to have some body and a bit of curl. Bye bye fine and stringy. But what Josette has done with that pallet (especially when compared to the efforts of the local barbers) is, I believe, masterful. Josette is popular and you will have to wait a while to get in to have her do her thing on your hair. It's worth the wait. She's incredibly knowledgeable and talented, and she's just a joy. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I am REALLY spoiled when it comes to getting my hair done because up until now my sister has been my stylist. I went into Au because I need a trim and they were listed on the Bumble and Bumble website. Jori was my stylist and she was really nice. We had a good chat about where my hair was and where I wanted it to be. She gave me some good tips on drying and styling my hair. I thought she did a good job. I discovered Au Salon about fourteen months ago, via a friend's recommendation. I intended for my first appointment to be for color only......I had very little hair (or so I thought) as I was newly finished with a course of chemotherapy, and was still wearing a wig. But I didn't like glimpsing gray in the new growth....it took away the joy of seeing the signs that I was healthy again.....so I wanted it banished. I figured I had months to go before I could ditch the wig. Well, I left the salon with my wig in a bag, a spring in my step and a sassy new short do. It was clearly one of the happiest days of my life! (silly, I know...everyone says "it's just hair", but when you have had your world turned upside down by cancer, small pleasures become big deals). Hannah, my stylist, said "you have more hair than you think". She was right! She colored my hair to match my wig exactly, so the transition was seemless. With each subsequent visit, my hair is longer, and my options greater. Hannah always has something new up her sleeve, and I always leave feeling like a million bucks. Hannah coaches me on how to style it, and deal with it's wacky post-chemo texture and curl. My sisters, who live out of state, admired my hair in the photos I would send, so when each came to visit, one in July and one in October, they both asked me to take them to Au Salon. My eldest sister said her husband gasped when he picked her up at the airport and said "you look ten years younger!", and my other sister said her teenage son, who is rather uncommunicative, and doles out approximately one compliment per annum, told his mom her hair looked "fantastic". The staff at Au Salon are very kind, friendly and professional. They are always on time, and very accomodating with my appointment requests. Five stars for Au Salon! read more

most painful haircut i've ever gotten. left me with irritated burn marks on the back of my neck and around the ears after being repeatedly scraped by the corners of really sharp clippers. and i had to talk through where the problematic areas in my hair were because the person cutting my hair left lines and patches on the back of my head and almost let me walk out like that if i hadn't insisted i look at the back of my head first. I think this was her first time using clippers. after fixing the mistakes, i left satisfied with my hairstyle overall. I got a happy hour discount plus a first time customer discount on top of that so I don't care for my money back, but I'm not going back there again. read more

When I walk into Au Salon I am always greeted with a friendly smile. The place is small, so it is not intimidating. My stylist, Megan, is always ready for me. I never know what I want to do with my hair, but Megan asks me every time I come in what I want. My answer is, "Do what you want." I totally trust Megan, and she always gives me a preview of what she is going to do. She explains everything. If I have any questions she answers them. If I ask for tips she is happy to share her secrets. At some salons I have been to before Au, the stylists have made me feel stupid for asking questions, but not here! During my time at Au Salon I am entertained by meaningful conversation and fun music. Megan makes sure I am comfortable at all times. At the end of the appointment I feel so amazing! Megan always styles my hair, and explains what she is doing, and what products she is using so I can duplicate the look when I go home. She helps me pick out products I can use. Every product I have purchased at Au Salon I have used. At other salons they sell me a bunch of stuff that I can never use again, because they do not fully explain how and when to use it. Even though this salon is in the hip neighborhood of NW 23rd, I can still take my 7 year old son there for haircuts. The staff treats him like a regular client. They even have a hidden stash of candy and toys! Megan, and the rest of the staff, never make me feel uncomfortable bringing him in. If you have not tried Au Salon, please do! If you think parking is a problem, have no fear...they have their own parking garage so you do not have to fight for a spot or parallel park. I can not parallel park, so this is a great plus for me! I recommend Megan, but the entire staff is great! I will never go to another stylist again. Megan and I have a hair marriage, and I am never getting a divorce! I really appreciate the fact that this salon works hard to ensure all their stylists have top notch training and ongoing education. I've seen two different stylists here, both in their apprenticeship and their cuts have been fabulous, and well worth the price. Having been to salons with prices in the 100's, this has definitely been the best experience. I feel listened to, and even if I can't explain exactly what I'm looking for, the stylist will work with me to add suggestions to how the cut will look best with my hair type and face shape. 5-Star Service! read more
