My son had two cavities that because we missed a couple of appointments to repair got bigger and he had to have a mini root canal they said. He is 7 years old Dr. Shau did the repair and my son told me a week later he wanted to see Dr. Shau because he liked him and he was nice. My husband said they did a great job of keeping my son calm and distracted with movie while they did the procedure. And he had very little pain after. Had to give a review because my son has never said he liked any Dr. he has met so far. Maybe he has a future in Dentistry. I'm not typical person to leave a bad review. But, it was a horrible experience. I had to called in to work and not get paid. Been coming here for 3 years. Moved far away, managed to be bringing my children and driving 1 hour and 25 minutes. I schedule my appointment months ahead at 3pm. One day before my appointment they moved me to 1:30,pm ... Not saying why? I got to the appointment at 1:40pm. They refused to see my children. I have proof I had confirmed my appointment at 3pm via text & via email. I asked to speak to Dr. Patel or Alexander Shau in which they refused to talked to me and told staff for me to reschedule. The staff was rude to me and my children. I dont recommend this place to anyone.. Dentis or staff dont care about your children or yiu as a parent. Just horrible.. read more

My wife and I had a bad experience with appointment scheduling with Austin Children's Dentistry located at 13616 US-183 Austin Tx. She received two automated reminders for an appointment for my son for 11:30am. One reminder was a week before the appointment and the other was sent a day before the appointment. On the day of the appointment their office called at 11:15 to say that we had missed the appointment that they claimed was at 11:00. We told them that the reminder that came in the form of a text said that it was at 11:30. When we asked why they said we were late, they said that my wife was told that at the time the appointment was made a month ago, that the appointment was at 11:00 and that there was no way to change the automated reminder to synchronize the time. I'm not happy about this situation for the following reasons. 1) It is in the best interest of the business to make sure that the appointment times are accurate. If not they lose money because a slot goes unfilled. The customer with the mixed up appointment time is unhappy because they have to re-scheduled to a later time which may cause them to lose pay, time off from work or in the case of a child in school, causing an unexcused absence which costs the school money. If the new appointment time is for another day, it means another absence from school and additional unpaid time off for the parent who has to bring the child in for the appointment. Keeping the appointment time and automated times synchronized is important because the new appointment time might not be possible or could impose another hardship on the patient and parents. For instance, if the only new appointment time conflicted with other appointments, business meetings, prepaid events or airplane departure times then the patient would not get the care they need. 2) The excuse of hiding behind the computer is something that has been used since the invention of the computer itself. Just about anyone can program a computer these days including kids. If the automated computer system is not working correctly, then it should not be used by the business and should be replaced with one that works and the business should call the customer to remind them of the time a week before the appointment and the day before the appointment as it used to do in the past. As I stated earlier, no one benefits from appointment mix-ups. The business loses money since it loses a slot that could have been filled. The professionals working for the company lose pay since they are unable to render their services and the company tarnishes its reputation. The customer is at minimum, inconvenienced and becomes dissatisfied by the service and eventually leaves. Everyone loses. I'd like to see you fix or eliminate the automated service and go back to just calling the patients to remind them of the correct appointment time rather than allowing the automated system to give false information. Also have a live person call the patients to remind them of the appointment or leave a voicemail with the correct information a week ahead of time and then a day before the appointment. Please quit blaming the computer for something you can fix, after all dentistry is a service. read more

We had a great first experience here. Of course I had heard about the recent controversy surrounding this place, but I always think there is two sides to every story. Due to the convenience of the location, I was will to take the "risk." My daughter had plenty to do in the waiting room while I filled out forms. She was completely entertained. We were called back shortly to do X-rays and the cleaning; the hygienist was great with my daughter. With her previous dentist she would get very anxious and want to leave. Not so here. Dr. M. was also great with my daughter. He explained to her why she can't suck her thumb anymore and she understood him. She came home talking about how she wasn't going to do that anymore. We'll certainly be back. No complaints here! First class service all the way. read more

My son had an infection because his tooth died a while back after he bumped it. They say him the same day I made the appointment. Because of covid, they normally would of not of pulled his tooth out. They made an exception without any debate and pulled it out the next day. The doctor and assistants were very friendly, patient and caring. They made my 6 year old son comfortable and pain free. He wasn't scared and was actually happy to have his tooth pulled out as long as he got to keep it. They thoroughly explained options and the post care step. They have him his tooth and we were off with the rest of the day. They followed up the next day to ensure he was ok. read more

Arrived for appointment. Given a huge stack of paperwork to complete - send it out ahead or have online AND notify me to complete. Son was going for a cleaning. Basically the tech brushed and flossed his teeth. Tried to take xrays with a wonky setup. Note entire office looks like it was setup in one day....old chairs, minimal equipment....feels like a chop shop. We waited for an hour then told couldn't see doctor without a document. They didn't tell me i needed to bring. I was told to talk to manager. Did not pause from phone to even look up (someone else sitting next to her doing nothing so assume she could have covered phone). Finally go find doctor. He instantly....not my policies i dont own this place. They check my sons teeth. Minimal cleaning (scraping etc) only done by dentist. Push sealants and we're done. 1.5 hours later!!! So basically his teeth we'rent cleaned...they were brushed and we wasted a ton of time. Will not be back. My daughter was scheduled for surgery and when time for appointment based on what time we were given, which was not written on paperwork, to be there they called me when I was almost 5 minutes away to let me know it was too late for her procedure. They called me once the day before to confirm we would be there and never clarified the time we were told had changed. I live an hour away and had to take off work as well as my daughter be out of school for this to get told 5 minutes before my scheduled arrival time they couldn't do procedure because I should have been there earlier. I work in healthcare and this is unacceptable. Poor communication!!! I'll be finding a new dentist and will not recommend to anyone!! read more

Please note that the review is only for the front staff. Dr. Shau is an excellent doctor who does great work. We were at the lakeline office last week and I had requested for no Nitrogen for my child upfront when I was paying for the services. During the treatment, they added Nitrogen and just 5 minutes after I left from the office, I got a phone from the staff to pay for it. They were super rude on the call and direct. I was surprised since the same lady was talking very nice earlier and they blamed me on how come I allowed them to pass nitrogen (which I wasn't aware of what they were doing during the treatment). I was surprised on their demeanor, when they were told upfront not to use Nitrogen and then they called back to pay for it. No dignity! read more

My children were patients here for about 5 years. I mostly had good experiences with the dentists themselves, although we were frequently shuffled around between dentists and there seemed to be high turnover all around. The office staff was frequently difficult. They were unfriendly and many times overcharged me - I made a habit of double-checking the bill to make sure our dental discount program was properly applied and that the charges were appropriate for each child (I am fairly understanding here - having 4 children on one bill can get confusing). I don't recall ever receiving an apology when mistakes were pointed out. Also, their scheduling practices were aggressive and annoying, even when I requested fewer calls. I often remember wishing they'd be as fastidious with my bill. Finally, after switching to another dentist and being there now for 3 rounds of cleanings/exams, I've found that my kids are getting MUCH better reports each time, which makes me suspect that Austin Children's Dentistry was quite aggressive in their quest to find problems and in my kids' mouths. This makes me sad to think back on two fairly traumatic "emergency" root canals that were performed on my daughter. I wish I'd considered getting another opinion. I would not recommend this practice. Two stars because I usually found the dentists and hygienists to be friendly and the kids liked the office (video games and movies). But at the end of the day, I'd rather have honest and respectful dental care than entertainment. read more

THIS INCIDENT OCCURED TUESDAY JUNE 30TH AT 1:35 PM Receptionist debbie for austin childrens dentistry was having me sign paperwork for my daughter to have braces put on with the orthodontist, debbie was her name she was very rude and disrespectful she wouldnt allow me to speak with my daughter who is 12 yrs old debbie informed me i needed to sign the paperwork first (we were still n the lobby with my daughter just next to me) debbie was very quick and snippy with me pushy controling rushing me around! I even made a point to ask her if she was busy and had alot going on today debbie rudely told me no... I was super uncomfortable... dont get me wrong i love the ortho my daughter sees there as well i have a 10 month old who also goes to this dentist ... i have nvr had n e problems with this place before... the issue escalated when debbie told me i couldnt go in the room with my daughter (all tho after debbie stomped away the dental hygienist said there wouldnt b a problem with me being in the room ).. this is a very seriouse procedure and very expensive... everything aside the fact is im there because i am paying them for a $5,000 procedure instead debbie treated me as if they were paying me to b there and she could treat me any kind of way she wanted i was very upset and embarrassed myself once i realized no one was going to intervine and stop this behavior it got bad enouph i had to tell debbie to have someone else speak with me and she was "annoying the shit out of me" with her controling overwhelming attitude towards me ... (debbie rolled her eyes flipping her hair around and stomped away no one did or said n e thing as if i were the one doing something wrong) keep in mind we arrived to our apt at 1:10 when the apt wasnt until 1:30 i called n to let them know we were n the parking lot due to the covid 19 thats what they have been asking us to do... i dont feel i should have been rushed talked over and cut off while im signing paperwork agreeing to pay $5,000 for their services. This was a terrible experience and i would really appreciate someone to bring attention to the fact this really did happen and it wasnt ok! I ended up leaving and not being present with my daughter while she had her braces put on because I didn't want to embarrass my daughter ... Moved out of State 5 months ago. My kids havent been to that dentist since last Summer. Yet, just got a bill that said it was 90 days past due. However, in the remarks says 1st notice. Also the bill was for a treatment that I was told was covered under Insurance and that they called and verified it with my insurance. This isn't even the 1st time this has happened! It's the 2nd or 3rd. Every statement I have received from my ins. company regarding this dentist always says 0 balance owed. So, I call the office to figure it out. The lady "helping" me was of no assistance. She was unnecessarily rude. She got really loud and started talking over me, and arguing with me! I never sign anything medical without approval my insurance 1st! Being that this has happened on multiple occasions, I am willing to bet your staff is not doing as they tell your patients and actually getting insurance approval 1st. I never liked going there but, unfortunately it was 1 of the few on my provider list and was close. Thankful to never have to deal with them again! I have also filed a complaint against them with the BBB and my insurance provider. A 1 star rating is too high. However, you have to rate something in order to comment. BEWARE of Dr. Melanson!!! The manner in which Dr. Melanson conducted my son's exam, and the way Dr. Melanson intimidated me into believing my three-year old son required TWO hour-long appointments of complete sedation made me feel very uneasy. My son suffers from asthma; sedation can be FATAL for children with asthma. During the exam, they separated my son from me, and did not allow me to sit with him. (I was sitting with my two-year-old daughter in a different room for her exam). After my son's exam, Dr. Melanson showed me x-rays of my son's teeth. I did not authorize anyone to take x-rays of my son's teeth! (I later found out from my new dentist, that the practice of taking x-rays on three-year olds is not a common procedure, nor does he recommend it). My son's pediatrician was equally shocked at Dr. Melanson's request to sedate my son on two separate occasions. He told me he had heard multiple complaints regarding Austin Children's Dentistry on Hymeadow, and suggested I seek a second opinion from Dr. Danny Watts. Dr. Watts saw NO reason to do ANYTHING to my son's teeth. He recommended I brush and floss his teeth regularly and return for his normal six-month check-up. Furthermore, Dr. Watts had a difficult time understanding why a dentist would recommend such drastic action for a three-year old's teeth. Please beware of Dr. Melanson's practices. He can be extremely intimidating and convincing. I am very grateful I sought a second opinion and did not put my son's life at risk. read more

Why would someone want to put their child under for no reason. My son had a baby tooth come in that did not form right and developed a cavity. I went to this dentist and they wanted to put a crown on and strap him in and sedate him. I heard children screaming and parents were not allowed back there. I said hell no. We found a dentist in Cedar Park who looked at the tooth and put a filling in it without sedating him and said he didn't need a crown because the tooth is a baby tooth and will fall out. He was 2 years old at the time. He said don't come back until he looses his first tooth. read more

Extremely mixed feeling about this place, I will probably return as soon as I can get my son's records. The weird thing about it is that the Dentists and Dental Assistance themselves provide excellent service. Dr. Diana, in particular, is excellent.. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the work itself. The Inflexible Office staff is the issue. The way they conduct the billing and scheduling part of the business is terrible and annoying. The ask you to pay deposits up front just to "reserve your appointment". They ask you to pay 100% up front for service even though you have insurance and will be reimbursed. I typically pay them 100%, then my insurance company has to send me a check since they do cover most of it.. Also, they don't seem to have any ability to estimate what my insurance company will pay or not. I work for Dell, so I don't have some obscure insurance company that nobody has every heard of. They send you an e-mail asking you to confirm your appointment and then they call you on top of it and ask you again. I told them I already confirmed I was coming and they say, oh, just ignore that.. Really? how about you just don't send it in the first place if it is useless. Honestly, the bad office staff and office practices overrules the great work the Dentist's do.. Update: I went back again and had to argue for 30 minutes not to pay everything upfront again. Sylvia, a lead person in the office, threatened to cancel my appointment if I didn't pay upfront.. She also told me 2 times that "there are plenty of pediatric dentists around".. Meaning she doesn't care about our business. All this while my 5-year old is awaiting treatment.. Horrible experience. I am typically not the kind of guy who leaves negative reviews, in fact I go out of my way to leave positive ones when I get great service. I took my 7 year old daughter here yesterday and the experience was lackluster to say the least. I took my daughter here to get a crown cemented back in. They did not even attempt to do the service, they just gave me a treatment plan. They told me I needed to sedate my daughter at a cost of $350 after having done that exact same thing for root canal. I went to book at another location and they had wrote in the notes that my daughter was uncooperative and would not open her mouth when instructed so that is why they wanted to sedate her. I was with my daughter the dentist (Patel) and the hygenist the entire time. My daughter expressed being nervous in a very mild tone but did not act uncooperative in any way and opened her mouth everytime she was asked. Also, I was not there but my wife said during the first root canal, Dr. Patel told my daughter that "if she did not quit moving I will drill harder and it will hurt". That is what a PEDIATRIC dentist said to a 7 year old during her first major dental procedure. Unacceptable. The location in Hutto is much better. I called the office yesterday hoping to speak to either dentist or hygenist to see what planet they or I was on that we saw something completely different. Of course my call was not returned. I feel that the office staff is what is terrible. My son went to an appointment and I have no complaints about Dr Allen, or the staff that treated him. The office and staff were nothing impressive. However, after getting an email confirmation only for my son, I called to make sure they also had my daughter appointment (both which were scheduled months ago). I was told that they've been having problems with the email reminders and that they did not have that appointment time available anymore. They could only assist me in rescheduling. Although the lady was not rude, she was not very willing to hear me out or explain how they could loose my reservations. I've been taking all my children here since they have had teeth or since my oldest was a baby, she will be 10 soon. So 10 years my family has been coming here. Dr. Melanson is great, but the office values are lacking. They value a dollar over business and loyalty. And they even compared my youngest daughters dental health to that of a food chain and (all in the same breathe) a grocery store. I thought that you build relationships, trust and a rapport... But come to find out none of that means NOTHING. They will kick you while you are down and step on you. 10 years and the well being of the patient in general means dog poop to them. If you ever NEED them and thinking that someone will have compassion for your child, don't come here. If you are looking for a place to call home for your little precious babies wait for Dr. Melanson to get his own practice or go somewhere else where you and your family are more than a dollar and where your child is valued as a human being and not a seat warmer. I would know a thing or 2 about business and people skills, I'm an entrepreneur and a business major. I say that to I'm not some angry ignorant person who didn't get their way, I know and understand the people who come to you for business are looking for a reason to come back or for a reason not to leave, they missed the mark. Bad news travels 11 times faster than good news. I don't want to tear them down, just simply to make sure parents understand your child means 0 to this practice as a whole. I found that out the hard way after 10 years, its kind of heartbreaking. In the meantime I hope my child's dental health isn't severe or that infection doesn't start to eat away at her jaw and cause far worse complications. And God willing we even make it. My daughter Katie and I had a wonderful experience this morning with the office staff, the hygenist and the dentist. I have to admit I was bit worried walking in at 7:30am with a full waiting room, but the wait was minimal and the entire visit (This visit was for a basic cleaning and to discuss the resolution of a cavity) was very efficient, up to and including the check out process, (explanation of my dental benefits and setting up follow-up appointments). My daughter told me in the car on the way to school that from now on she only wants to go to this dentist - and frankly that settles it for me! read more

I used to take my 2 children there. They never honor the appointment time. They would delay by more than 45 minutes. If you ask them why? they would be rude to you. Recently my daughter's milk teeth never fell down but the permanent one started growing behind the milk teeth. We took her there and those screwy folks said that they had to remove her milk teeth via a procedure. The same horrible procedure that they did on that innocent girl. Giving anesthesia etc etc. My wife said NO and we came back. I think it was the same time around which the small girl died (was killed). My daughters milk teeth fell by itself 2 weeks later after some manual wiggling by my wife. I had always felt they were recommending unwanted things to swindle us. I took my daughter here after a small chip to her front tooth. I was told over the phone that X-rays were optional. I of course want the best care for my child and would have gladly opted for X-rays if they were medically necessary. I was greeted warmly by the front desk, but was brought immediately to an X-ray room. I explained that I did not want X-rays done unless they were medically necessary. I was told that the dentist would not see my daughter without them. I insisted that the dentist at least evaluate my daughter. The dentist finally came in and evaluated the tooth. She barely acknowledged me with only a head nod as she entered the room. She was clearly put off by my taking charge of my daughters care and was absolutely unprofessional. After she evaluated the tooth (which by the way did not need to be X-rayed). She turned to me and gave me two different treatment options. She was very dismissive to my questions and could not give me a solid professional opinion on what the best treatment option would be. Because I care for the integrity of my daughters health, I thanked her kindly and told her that I would be seeking a second opinion. Upon check out, I asked for a copy of the findings. The front desk staff insisted that they could not release the records because the person in charge of releasing medical records was not in the office that day. This was clearly a lie! When I asked her to call this person to get approval for release of records, she went to the back office and retrieved this person who was supposedly not in the office. I spoke with the person in charge of medical records and was assured that they would be e-mailed the next day. That was seven days ago..and I still have not received the records. read more

Wanted to perform unnecessary treatments on both of my children, one of whom is only 3 years old. They told me he had in infection relating to his chipped front tooth and that the tooth needed to be extracted. We came in for the extraction and he wouldn't drink the medication for sedation because he was scared and crying. The staff acted annoyed and kept trying to rush him which made him more upset. They tried the gas but he was still too upset so the dentist became very impatient and basically said my only option is to extract the tooth without medication. HELL NO I'm not traumatizing my child like that. When I declined she said OK well just watch and wait. 2 seconds ago he was going to be sedated for something that I can watch and wait? When she realized she wouldn't be paid for anything that visit she just walked out without another word, my son in tears, and none of the staff telling me what to do next. My child was just a dollar sign to this dentist and the only compassion he received was from the front receptionist. Unacceptable. Will not be taking my kids back ever. read more

It's so crammed in the treatment area, I felt like I was risking tripping over someone when I went over to check on my kids. Whatever, they're trying to maximize space. Everyone was nice enough, although one of the front desk ladies apparently was rude to my ex over the phone when he was trying to understand why we had an outstanding balance (from the Leander location). I find out my girl has a cavity (grrrr!) and the only plan they offer is to completely knock her out to fill it. Um, what? Excuse me? She's had several filled previously with laughing gas and a movie, no problem. I tried to tell them this, and was told no, this is the way the dr does it, period, no negotiations. You're going to put my child, who medicates horribly, under heavy sedation right off the bat without listening to the parents for the dr's convenience? At that point the deal was sealed, nope. We had her re-evaluated at the Leander location where they found a second cavity and are taking care of both without putting her out. read more

I have been taking my kids to this dentist office since 2008. I recommend this dentist to anyone with children. All the staff are extremely friendly and professional. When you make an appointment, you are seen on time. I have never waited longer than 5 minutes past my appointment time. All four of my children LOVE to go to the dentist, which is something I hated when I was a kid and still do. If they treated adults, I would go myself. One of my children has special needs and isn't the most cooperative patient, they are really good with her and really patient in working with her. read more

Love taking my childrens here! I have been going to ACD for the past couple of years and I am very pleased with their many Pediatric Dentists. I have a todder and a preteen. My toddler has never had a bad experience. She loves getting her prize after her cleaning, and the assistants do such a great job at keeping them hapy throught out the appointment. My preteen has had a few cavities :( , and getting the resortations done, was a very calm and easy appointment for her. So happy with the preventive care given here. Getting their xrays has never been a issue, the assitants are very good at what they do. The front desk ladies are so inviting and greet you as you come in. Was called back in a timely matter which is pleasing and back staff was very courteous and friendly. Dr. Lin was very kind ,sweet, gentle and addressed all my concerns. Would not recommend. I told them that my child had xrays 6 months prior to the visit would only need a cleaning. I was personally "counseled" by the Dr Updyke that "by law" he could not do a cleaning without doing xrays. This scare tactic was completely false, as you could have a cleaning and never even see a dentist if you prefer. The reality is that he saw his insurance claim amount decreasing and assumed that I was some customer that would cave under his "professional" advice. In addition, the office requires you to sign consent forms that allow them to sedate your child at THEIR discretion, under the guise of "Behavior Management". Dentists are not anesthesiologists and are not properly trained to handle emergency situations if something goes wrong when your child is sedated. read more
