Whenever we have a DIY project at home, we are sure to make at least one or two visits to Ace. They are always so helpful, and we never need to wander through the store trying to find what we need - like we would at HD. They are always great at asking if we need any help finding something and they will take us right to the spot. And if we need any advice on a project, they are sure to have someone available to answer our questions. My pups also love going because they get lots of attention plus treats! We will not be using this location anymore. We've been loyal customers for years, so today's experience was extremely disappointing. I stopped in to have a key cut for my SUV using key blanks I had already purchased online, only to be told they wouldn't cut them because they weren't purchased from their store. At no point over the years was I ever told this was their policy. After years of supporting this business, they refused to perform a simple key-cutting service. Customer loyalty should count for something. Very disappointing experience. We'll be taking our business elsewhere. read more

placed an order online and it was very easy to pick up at the store. The reason for the two stars is the staff that follow you around in the store, literally looking at you like you're going to steal something. I understand they obviously have theft issues, because there's a person full-time at the door. But then there's thug looking people, especially the woman with the long black hair, that follow you around the store, less than 6 feet in your personal space. I thought she was gonna come over me to get to my husband who she thought was going to steal a jar of jam. We were still in the store, trying to browse, which was impossible to do with a multiple people standing in our way literally as we tried to walk down aisles . Is the jam that good????? should we have bought a case? We finally just had to leave and PAY FOR THE JAM and get our online order. There is no other way to see it other than it was intentionally intimidating. What the actual heck???!!! this is how you treat customers? That you want to come back? shame on you all. read more

Tried to return a wire (unopened) stripper purchased from a city we moved from. Store would not accept return even though I was willing to accept credit to purchase needed items (more than the stripper was worth). ACE just lost a long time customer. This place is a bit expensive compared to Home Depot. But it has a TON of employees working and it has a ton of customers. Arrived Sunday at 12 noon and it was packed! Had to grab some pipe dope because Teflon tape wasn't cutting it for my water project. $5.99 for oatley brand. There were so many employees working. Paul at the Ace Hardware on Tustin Avenue in Santa Ana is an absolute legend. I don't throw that word around, but the guy is seriously one of a kind. Paul knew exactly where everything was, pulled stuff off shelves I would've never found, and even suggested a couple of better options I hadn't thought of. We ended up walking out with everything on our list in 15 minutes. He literally saved us hours of driving around and frustration. The man knows hardware like nobody else, has been there forever, and actually seems to enjoy making sure you leave happy. If you're anywhere near Santa Ana, do yourself a favor and go see Paul. I was shopping for a pellet smoker recently and wanted to support a local business instead of just ordering on Amazon. I found one locally at this ace hardware store which was located just about 5-6 miles away (I'll get back to this in a moment). The great part about it was that I could pick it up in my truck OR Ace would deliver and assemble it for me for FREE (per the Ace hardware website when I entered in my zipcode). I drove up to the shop and the parking lot has plenty of parking and pretty decent foot traffic. I'm not ashamed to admit that I am a fairly big fan of Ace bc they tend to have a bit of everything and normally have employees that know a bit more than the average Home Depot/Lowe's employees (YMMV) I immediately saw the areas for the smokers. After looking around for an employee for 5 minutes, I just went to the register to ask for help. Someone came about 5 mins later to answer some of my questions. I was told that yes they did have the model I wanted in stock but it wasn't new - that I would have to get the floor model. I asked if they had any new ones unbuilt in a box and they said it's unlikely. I pressed to see if they could check and apparently that was an inconvenience based on the employees reaction. But nonetheless she went to check. The employee returned to say they likely didn't have one but wasn't sure. I took measurements and based upon the height of the built smoker, it wouldn't fit in the back of my truck. She then told me no problem bc they will deliver it for me and then asked if I was close by. Yes I said it took me about 10 minutes to get here and I said I think it's about 5.5 miles from my house. I was then informed that they would only do "local" deliveries for free and if I wanted it delivered I would have to pay extra money to get it. So I asked "what is local? 5.5 miles doesn't seem that far?" Apparently it has to be within less than 5 miles of the store or they won't deliver it for free. At this point it didn't feel like things were going to work out. I've been asked to purchase an out of box floor model at full price and pay extra money for delivery bc my house was 0.5 miles outside the free delivery range. I ended up buying the smoker on Amazon for cheaper than in store and I got free shipping directly to my patio. What started off with wanting to support a local business ended up being a waste of my morning that ended in confusion and a bit of frustration. It's unfortunate things worked out this way but just like most businesses, even franchises, your experience will vary dependent on your staff/employees. Had I gone on a different day or spoken to another individual, I likely would have had a completely different experience and outcome. Home Depot and Lowe's is within 5.5 miles of my house :) So I plan to give them all my business moving forward. read more

This review is about front cashier Laurie. We just moved to the area and have been back-and-forth to this location quite a few times for many things around the house. Everyone I have come across in all different departments have been so helpful. Not today! I was unlucky enough to walk up to Laurie's register at the front of the store. My entire interaction with this person was so horrible. Laurie should not be interacting with customers, but rather working in the back or stock room. I didn't get the name of the nice woman who came to see what was happening. Thank you to her for being kind. As for Laurie, whoever is managing this store, please give Laurie more customer service training. She should not be placed in a position where she is interacting with other people. I understand it's just a hardware store, BUT that is all the more reason employees should be helpful and at least a little friendly. People come in there asking for help with projects. I will happily be driving a few miles down Tustin Blvd. to spend my money at Home Depot from now on. read more

The service at this store is awesome. They are knowledgeable and helpful which is seldom the case at Home Depot or Lowes. They can cost a bit more but they are well-worth it. If I need a part and take the old one to them, I can be sure if they have it they will sell me the correct part and I will not need to return it because it isn't the right one. Friendly and helpful staff is always available, I've never had to wait around to get assistance. They have everything you need from a hardware store without the hassle of searching through the isles of the big box, construction stores like Home Depot and Lowe's. Prices are a little higher but it's closer to my home and I'm in and out faster which to me offset the slightly higher prices. Great staff and wide variety of merchandise you cannot get elsewhere. HOWEVER, when I was there today a woman with 2 German Shepards on leashes was there. i don't like dogs. I've had scary encounters with them. She and her dogs were blocking the aisle I wanted to go down. I had to wait for her to leave. An older gentleman was there with his service dog. When those shepherds saw the service dog they aggressively barked at them on 2 different occasions. Very disruptive and scary. Dogs should NOT be allowed unless they are service dogs. read more

Ace REALLY IS the helpful hardware place. I came in needing help with a leaky hose bib and Bryan and Ray both went above and beyond to help me salvage and buy the right parts. The parts themselves were inexpensive, yet they spent time fitting them and helping me remove a stripped screw. Wonderful and caring staff. As a side note, I brought my dog and everyone welcomed her and even gave a treat. This really is your helpful, family oriented neighborhood hardware store. Highly recommend! The store has just about everything you need in packed aisles, but won't have the variety a big box store has. In return, they actually have small and "loose" parts so you aren't stuck buying a million of a washer when you could just buy one. AND Someone will actually help you find that tiny washer too. read more

Car key battery died and I was freaking out about how to get back into my car and start it since the alarm won't allow you to start the engine even with the key once the alarm has been tripped. Luckily the battery had one more click left in it and I quickly did a search for the closest hardware store. The search brought me to Woodward's Ace Hardware. A prominent banner in the front proclaims it a JD Power Award winner for customer satisfaction 12 out of 13 years. I was happy to see the awards were very justified. I walk in and was greeted by the checkout clerks. I asked in they sold car key remote batteries and the clerk pointed me to the key cut counter where they would change it for me and referred me to the specific aisle number for extra convenience. I later spotted the battery display right across from the checkout stands. The difference between buying your necessary items from a place like this vs at a big box store is the extra service steps they offer like this one. I'm pretty sure if I were at a less customer service sensitive store they would have just pointed me to the batteries and let me flounder on my own. I don't walk around with the tiny Phillips head screwdriver required to change out the battery so I would indeed have been a bit SOL. The guys at the key cut counter are a friendly bunch. They quickly set to opening up my remote and changed the battery without my having to ask. They recycled my old battery and sent me to the front to pay. Trusting, friendly service is always appreciated. I would refer anyone who needs anything hardware relate to come to Woodward's! read more

This specific location seems to ALWAYS come through for me! It's always populated with plenty of very friendly, capable employees. And, if the first employee can't fairly quickly supply me the solution I'm looking for, they are quick to call in another employee who is exactly capable. Such was my experience yesterday, when very-friendly Bruce called in a nearby employee to successfully help out. Although I do sometimes go to either of two more conveniently located Home Depots (with their massive stock), I'm super happy to maybe pay a tiny bit more more at Woodward's, because I get SO MUCH MORE in customer service and predictable satisfaction! read more

The window screen and frame replacement (if necessary) at Woodward's is perfect! I tried, without success, to find a reliable mobile service to replace our screens. Thank goodness I put in a little effort to remove my screens/frames and take them in to Woodward's for repair. Jeffrey did an outstanding job while replacing the frames and screens. He gave me the option to decide if I wanted/needed frame replacement and I did. The pricing was surprisingly reasonable and much less than having a mobile service do the job.
