Upon walking down Second Street I gazed up at this new building, and looked quite modern and very unique. On the street level it was quite dead and saw the biggest doors I have ever seen with Proper sign on top of them. I pulled hard to open it and quickly noticed inside was packed with people. It was like I cracked a nutshell. The lobby was gorgeous with artistic luxury touches. I have to felt this feeling since I walked inside a Tony Burch store. The interior also had a natural earthy feel and excited to explore it all. The check-in area was museum quality, the elevator hallway was mesmerizing, and pottery pieces proudly displayed next to the lobby bar. And this bar was packed and practicing social gathering. Next to it is a restaurant called Peacock which is a Mediterranean Grill. The menu did look appetizing but will try at a later date. I did read earlier to must-see the staircase which resembled a large optical illusion. Each step on this wooden staircase takes you up to a world of unknown. Eventually ended up on a level of ballrooms and conference rooms. There was a spectacular outside patio where you have the whole Seaholm District in full view with Shoal Creek below. This is the place to enjoy your drinks at night. Back downstairs and out the Peacock front doors I found the Kempelen's Owls perched out in front. These spooky two owl sculptures have eyes that follow you. This is a remarkable piece of art that perfectly fits this area. At night they light up. Overall the new Austin Proper is a great looking hotel inside and out, and perhaps will do a weekend staycation here after the virus air clears out. read more

Really enjoyed my stay here. Visually stunning and yet super cozy. Clean rooms, timely maid service, friendly staff, delicious coffee, tea and pastries every morning in the lobby. The gym is beyond and worth the amenity fee, I just wish I'd had more time to use it! Really can't say enough good things, only "minus" is the hotel bar is super crowded so it was hard to find a space even as a guest in the evenings. That said, all bartenders and servers were really kind and never rushed us during the breakfast hour we grabbed a quick latte. Highly recommend staying here if you're looking to splurge and want the true five star experience! read more

It's a good hotel but a little more style over substance for the money/points you're spending here. Service was just ok, valet was efficient and easy. Our room was nice and comfortable but the bathroom was freakishly small, even in our junior suite. It is so small that water from the shower may get onto the rest of the bathroom floor where the sink is. This was the biggest fail IMO. It is extremely rowdy when you walk past their restaurant en route to the hotel elevators. Given this, it loses its luxury/high end touch for me, but I guess that's Austin. I did kind of wish I booked the JW Marriott instead of this property. We didn't have time to explore the amenities such as the gym but we did visit the bar to the right of the lobby on our last night here and loved the intimate experience there. read more

We LOVED our staycation at the Austin Proper Hotel over July 4th. The hotel is stunning from every angle, the pool was spacious and a great space to relax. Such unique restaurants throughout the hotel and the coffee and tea in the morning was wonderful. They pay attention to the little things, such as the note and treat delivered to our room as a thank you for being Titanium elite, the fine china that breakfast is served with, even the stunning potted plants. We will always remember our time here and will definitely be back for brunch or happy hour very soon! read more

Still no solution worked out by the hotel.. super confused on how my seeing glasses and sunglasses were in the same spot and one was found but the other was not.. rude security, staff that steals and covers for eachother.. I cannot purchase the glasses that were stolen from me as they were from a specific collection so this trip to Austin really was not a a good one. Just finished an outstanding 24hrs in Austin at Proper! We did just about everything the hotel had to offer: happy hour poolside, dinner at Le Peacock, breakfast coffee in the Goldies, brunch at Le Peacock, massages and steam rooms at Verbena, and lunch at La Piscina. We were there for our 10yr wedding anniversary and had a truly memorable time. Their attention to detail set them apart from other luxury stays. We got about three to four different hand written notes from different staff wishing us well for the occasion and thanking us for our patronage over the course of our stay. The room had great amenities (like the moisturizer and the Bluetooth speaker), the hotel itself is beautiful with really cool decor, and the spa and workout facility had everything I wanted and some stuff I didn't know I wanted--like delicious cbd tea. The restaurants were exceptional with our favorites being the short rib hummus from Peacock and fish tacos from Piscina. The spa offered one of the highlights of the stay. My wife and I had the best full body massages in recent memory thanks to the professional therapists (huge recommendation for Teri!). If we're nitpicking, the poolside bar service was pretty weak and the tiles can be slippery so walk and watch your step. But the mango sorbet taster made up for it. Lastly, we appreciated the QR code with the valet ticket that made cashless tipping possible and would like to see more of that because we don't carry cash. They are woefully understaffed and their personnel is both inept and dismissive. The pool is super dinky and stuffed with party-goers on the weekend. It was gross. Now I know why the photo of the pool on the website cuts off half of it - to create the illusion that more than 12 people can be in the pool at the same time. Lady Bird Lake Trail is easily accessible from the hotel, but unless you want your feet pierced by drug infested needles, let me recommend you abstain. So messed up. Tents everywhere. Pretty rank. The waitress at the breakfast restaurant scolded me. The room service tray sat outside the room for many hours, even after calling them and being informed, "we will get to it when we can." The almond croissant was tasty, tho. Sit in the lounge and have one of those with some $8 orange juice. And the piece de resistance - the valets left the car door open all night and ran down the battery on the car. I sit at the valet stand as I type this. No one felt compelled to tell me this until I checked in with them 20 minutes after the car was supposed to arrive. My daughters missed their trip to the Capital because of their negligence. Just awful. I was just informed that they are consulting the owner's manual of my vehicle to figure out how to jump it. The moment a problem presented itself - the staff scattered. I called for the car 140 minutes ago, and still I wait.... And the valet is $50 a night. They are building a huge, architecturally significant office building next door. Which will some day be very nice. For now, it means construction begins at 6am. And the beeping from the construction equipment is evidently why they put earplugs in the rooms. Everyone was up at 6. Even though we would have preferred to snooze a bit longer. The space is cool - the decor is the highlight. Best to take it all in by having a drink here, rather than pay this freight - and it's way expensive (which I would never complain about if the service was remotely reasonable). Hell, you'd be better off staying virtually anywhere and coming here for cocktails. Or not coming at all - plenty of places in Austin for a good drink. Bottom line is that our stay was chock-full of the kind of nonsense that you don't expect from a luxury hotel. That's because it's not one. Looks like one. Smells like one, even. I got a suite room and it's still a little bit smaller than other places. However, their customer service is excellent. The front desk would do anything to accommodate you, including booking restaurants and salons... The valet is safe because they would check for you. I love the gym room because they have most equipment you would need (balls, rubber bands, reformer, cables..). - The staffs won't open the door for you. Some staffs are judgmental. My department held their annual conference at this hotel. Other than there not being a proper desk in my room, I enjoyed everything about my experience there. The gym is massive and has peloton bikes. The catering in the ballrooms was very good. The view from my room was of a parking garage but I wasn't in my room much. I would come here, often, for work or casual drinks, but likely not for food and maybe not to stay. There are too many hotel options in Austin. Here's the good and what could be better: 1. Cost - for the price, it looks like the price, but it is not functional for the price. Eg I got a "deal" on a basic room with a city view, low floor, and the room size was about 300sqft if that. Ie Not room for much. No tables to put anything on. The furniture and decor was nice, but minimal, the finishes were high end. South Congress Hotel is similar aesthetically and 1/2 the price and the location is much better to get out and about and you get courtesy electric bikes, but you don't get the "posh" energy of staying at the Proper. 2. Location - mixed feelings here. There are places to walk to, but this isn't NYC. Things are a bit all over the place to find. It's close to the river walk. But it is a ways off from things like shopping and food on South Congress. For work purposes may make sense though. 3. Valet - nice but it's your only option and it's $50/night. Other spots are $30/night. Which adds up over a longer stay. The service is outstanding though! They heat your seats and steering wheel if you have that in your car on a cold day so you're not freezing! 4. In room amenities - no shelving or places to put your room service, your cups or drinks, your phone, purse etc. In a regular room all you get is one small chair to pile your stuff on. The wardrobe closet is mostly hanging only so not a good option. These basic rooms were prob designed by and for men. 5. Room service - had the shrimp pasta (which was dry and not good at all) and the fries (saved the day they were fresh cut and a bit over cooked but I ate them as I was hungry and the aioli was good not great tasted more like Mayo than anything they should've provided ketchup.) Food was around $70 and not worth $20. 6. The bed - amazing and saved the trip. But don't sit in the front edge between the bed and TV and try to use your in room dining cart as a table because the bed is not a sturdy mattress that you can do this with. You'll slide down onto the floor. But sleeping in the bed for hours on end, is easy to do. 7. The lighting and blinds - all centrally controlled except the bed sconces which are dimmable as are the bathroom lights which is nice. The blinds have both a blackout and sheer shade option. Great for the floor to window setup and if you want to pass out without knowing the day and time! 8. TV and speakers- TV is smart and big for a small room. Bluetooth speaker next to the bed is high quality! 9. Hotel lobby, restaurants, pool, rooftop - all beautiful as expected. Tons of architecture and interior design to enjoy. 10. Service - think Nordstrom's or any high quality service company. You get that here. If you call and they don't answer, you get a "911" type return call to check on you and serve you. Love that! 11. Training and luggage/valet third party services - They were short staffed when I arrived late evening, they asked the third party luggage/valet people to loan someone to escort me to my room as my key wasn't working. Only to learn it was me not them. Anyhow, the lucky winner was a woman that was only 3 weeks into her job. She said she'd never been INSIDE the hotel?! So she unfortunately couldn't bridge the silence as we walked to my room with things to educate me on the property or answer questions. I felt bad for her. She was a very nice, very smart older African American woman that was more than capable of doing more than hauling luggage! All of her peers or management were white men to contrast. I asked if in her training did they give them a tour of the hotel and amenities so that they could speak to it? She said No. Wow! So I called the manager and provided the free tip/consultation in customer service and operations management. Everyone on the property at all levels should know this place inside and especially out at these costs and quality of brand. It'll make up for the little annoying things like no shelving to put my drink on or table to eat my in room dining. Small hinges open big doors guys. I'll be back in some capacity at some point I'm sure. Not in a rush though. read more

Stayed here this weekend for my anniversary with my boyfriend. We did notify the hotel about the anniversary and they gave us a sweet gift in the room to celebrate. Overall pretty good. Very pretty hotel. The room was very small, had a nice bathroom though. Cool features in the room for the curtains and lights. Loved the Aesop products in the bathroom. Everyone who worked here was super kind & went above and beyond which was nice. They always gave us free waters throughout the hotel which was nice since there wasn't water anywhere in sight. Amazing shower & water pressure just wish there was a bathtub. We did do one of the free Pilates classes which was super fun & a great experience. Amazing workout! The resort fee was kind of annoying & the valet was super expensive. Honestly everything was just really expensive. I think if the price was a little better it would be better & I would come back. read more

Pros: Great location, great service, nice room Cons: restaurant and bar are perpetually overcrowded with locals rendering them virtually unusable by guests. Valet is a nightmare. Recommendation: Find another hotel Details. The rooms are nice and updated with a high quality material selections. They are not large, but large enough. Great views. The location is fantastic and in the best area in downtown, IMHO. Close walk to restaurants, bars, South Congress, bats, etc. The entire staff was friendly, helpful, and capable. The real issue is that starting around 4pm the whole restaurant/bar area in the lobby becomes over crowded, a bit cheesy, music thumping, and too loud to talk without screaming. This continues late. We tried to stop by the bar before dinner for a glass of wine and another night for a drink after dinner. Both times there were no seats, nowhere to stand, and a line to get a drink. We passed. I suspect this is what make the valet so bad in that they have such large crowds it gets overwhelmed. If you are looking for a great hotel experience where you, the guest, feel welcome and accommodated, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a nice room with a Vegas pool party in the lobby, this is for you. read more

The bar truly is horrible. Every time I go I'm more perplexed on how they get away with batch drinks and concentrate lemons and limes charging $20/drink minimum. The drinks taste horrible, they are all batch made and to not even use fresh ingredients. I drank a $20 glass of lime concentrate. I wouldn't even tell the tourists to go to this bar. I cannot begin to express how incredible, service oriented, proactive and dedicated the staff at Austin Proper were to me during my recent visit. After arriving at the hotel 2nd floor bar and unable to find a spot to sit, Dodd approached and asked if he could help. He made a space for us within a minute and made sure our drink order was taken without a wait. The same thing happened the following night at the Hotel restaurant The Peacock- with no reservations during prime dining Dodd took care of us. This is not an isolated event but seems to be the culture of Austin Proper. Leftovers from dinner were in the fridge and I headed to the pool cold pizza and pita bread in tow. There is a restaurant adjacent to the pool and I asked the manager if there was a way to heat my late lunch. He stated he would be glad to help and as I started to wait he assured me I could go back to the pool and he would find me. I believe his name was Angelo and if not he is the one with a great customer service attitude and awesome handlebar mustache. Job well done and I highly recommend Austin Proper- it is a place you will remember for all the things they do to insure your stay is one you will never forget- oh and it's Antonio not Angelo!!! Beautiful property with very unique decor (think bold wallpaper and mismatch furniture) that creates a modern organic, romantic vibe. The pool area on the 5th floor is beautiful, a must check out. You need your key to access any floor so make sure you carry that with you every time. The rooms are nice, the bed is comfy AF, and the bathrooms have beautiful dark tile and lighting is amazing! The only complaint I had was that the water never really got cold, (I like taking cold showers) to which we had to move rooms but it still wasn't cold enough. Maybe it's a TX problem and not the hotel. But laying it out here if you're someone who also likes cold showers! He staff was my favorite part, everyone is extremely friendly, inviting and helpful! I can't say enough good things about the team at The Proper in Austin, but I'll try. My first visit to this property was for dinner with my friend, Ben, who was in town from LA during SXSW (I live in Austin). He had a reservation at La Piscina, and having heard good things about The Proper I thought it'd be fun to check out. I had no idea what I was in for...! La Piscina has such a great vibe. The restaurant sits right next to the pool on the rooftop with both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat on the patio with an ambiance worth mentioning -- dimly lit, surrounded by countless cacti and beautiful greenery; it has a polished, yet rustic feel. Also, the waitstaff wears white linen...like, are we in Mexico?! We had margaritas and fajitas and they definitely did not disappoint. Here's where it gets good -- On our way out, Ben and I were captivated by the design in the hotel lobby, and decided to "take a lap" and check out a little bit more of the property before leaving. We must have made our enthrallment a bit obvious as Daniel, who manages food and beverage, struck up a conversation with us and offered us a little "tour" (What!? Yes, Please!). We gladly accepted as we all raved about Kelly Wearstler's genius. Ben and I left feeling so spoiled. Daniel went out of his way to share the magic with us, and we were so grateful for his time and effort. That was a few months ago, and after our experience I felt inclined to save Daniel's information as he had made such an impression on us. I sent him a follow up message the next day thanking him for the tour and we left it at that. If you thought that was cool, listen to this -- Cut to this past weekend - Mother's Day. My mom was in town, and having made a few reservations at places I wasn't sold on, I suddenly thought about The Proper, and how I'd raved to she and my dad about Ben and I's experience with Daniel. (Sidebar: my dad has worked in/managed luxury hotels for my entire life, so our family has a keen eye and a deep appreciation for a memorable guest experience.) I thought we might try The Peacock this time since it's been rated so highly. Unfortunately, my search turned up with "no availability". I mean, who was I kidding? I was looking for a reservation for the day of, and it was a Saturday night, at that! ...and then, Daniel came to mind. "Can't hurt to try!' I thought, so I sent him a text explaining the situation and asking if there might be any way for us to be added to a waitlist if something opened up. He responded shortly thereafter not only giving me a confirmed reservation, but the name of their GM who would be on site should I need anything. !!!!! There's something to be said about being taken care of in such a way. The "Whatever It Takes" mindset, as the legendary Colin Cowie puts it. We enjoyed a beautiful dinner at The Peacock under Addison's care, and we were so thrilled that he kept us laughing the entire time. Emily, at the hostess stand, figured out that she and my mom were from the same small town in Oregon, and Natasha, who became our buddy in the elevator, celebrated with me when I found a piece of my ring that I briefly thought I'd lost. I know these might sound like trivial details, but I include them to convey the sense of warmth, presence, connection, intention, and inclusion that is so consistent among the staff at The Proper. They create time and space to connect with their guests, and it really fuels our ability to relax and enjoy. We frequently travel to Austin and we had such high hopes for this stylish property. When we arrived Friday night a group of ladies exiting the hotel were belligerent and screaming. One was so drunk she ran into a tree... Even as we checked in there were rowdy folks yelling and security took no action. Check-in was not informative and we were completely unaware of the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts perks. We were not told about the breakfast credit, gym location or where other amenities were - that is always standard practice for the Amex Platinum check-in process. The next morning we arrived at Peacock for breakfast. We were told that it would be a 45+ min wait .... They do not prioritize hotel guests which again is not something any other 5 star hotel we've stayed at does. We then made a reservation for Sunday morning to ensure the same thing didn't happen again. We arrive on Sunday at 10:30AM and they do not have the reservation. They also gave us attitude when they made the error... why? We also received poor service from the Valet staff. This was a really bad experience and we really expect a lot more from a five star hotel that's part of Amex's Fine Hotels & Resorts collection. A beautifully designed hotel with bad service. This hotel just opened up Dec 2019 and is such a beautiful and new hotel. I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical seeing the bedroom pictures online bc it looked a little bohemian but in person, it's gorgeous and chic with all the wallpaper and textures the designer used. We were also introduced to Aesop products which they provide in the baths and they are the best hotel bath products we've ever used and will plan on buying some. The service in this hotel was excellent and they even provide the use of electric and manual bikes for the guests. The trail is conveniently located just steps away from the hotel and we had such a nice afternoon bike ride. This was our first family getaway since Covid and the hotel did a great job in keeping up with safety. They take temp at door for each guest and make sure you have a mask as well. A brand new hotel and honestly it was amazing. My only complaint is that the entire hotel smelled like hickory smoke..nothing like cigarette smoke. Apparently they are working on getting their vent system figured out and they use a lot of wood in the kitchen and at night, the elevators and hallways smell like a camp fire. Came back to Austin Proper after receiving a very kind and professional response from the hotel manager and we are so glad that we did. They have seemed to resolve all of their opening month jitters and provide my wife and I with absolutely splendid service. We had an amazing Valentines Day weekend here and will definitely make Austin Proper part of our itinerary when we come to Austin in the future. We would especially like to thank Louis for ensuring that our stay went smoothly and also a shout out to Zach behind the bar for taking such good care of us. Let's face it, decor doesn't matter if you can't sleep in the hotel. Around 3 am beeping trucks backing into the hotel below our room continued until 5 am. Reported this to the evening clerks who we showed many videos to and their response was they needed to "verify". 4 am hair tossed down at the check in w video asking wtf and night man says, "let me verify" and then.... nothing. they offered to not charge for the room but that begs the question, if $500 a night isn't enough for a restful night, what is the right price? the rooms are small though designed with a generic and hip enough aesthetic most will find pleasing, I don't recommend. read more

I don't recommend unless your intention is to drink really expensive drinks which aren't great, eat fatty food, and flaunt your stuff and check out others. My husband and I went to The Quill Room because they featured music (our impetus for visiting Austin) with a bar and food. The performers were really good (we checked out ahead of time who was playing) but we could barely hear them because the clientele seemed much more interested in listening to their own voices, which were super loud. My heart broke for the performers, and I felt like we wasted a lot of money on pretentious food and drink without being able to hear what we came for. I suggest The Quill give up on hiring live performers and stream musak instead. They'll save money, most of the clientele won't notice, performers can find other venues where their talent will be appreciated, and out of towners like me won't waste our money. read more
