I needed a sewing machine for quilting and was overwhelmed at the options. After telling Robyn what I was looking for, she gave me several choices , let me check them out and let me leave without purchasing anything and with no pressure. Several days later, I came back to make my purchase and she demo'd the machine for me. When I got it home it seemed to have a problem so I called and she walked me through a few items to check. When those didn't work, she said I could bring the machine back in so she and Mike could check it out. They treated me kindly, not like a nuisance, figured out the problem and repaired it while I waited. My experience with them was awesome and I highly recommend Austin Sewing. My 12 year old embroidery/sewing machine began acting up more than usual. It was time for maintenance service anyway, so I reached out to the other store I purchased this machine from. I could bring it in and then it would sit for 4-6 weeks before they could look at it. I asked If I could make a reservation to bring it in in 4-6 weeks and was told no. A quick google search brought me to Austin Sewing Machines. I called them about service, and guess what, they gave me a reservation to bring in the machine in 4 weeks. Well how about that!? The cleaning/maintenance price was very fair. They had the machine for about 3 weeks and called to let me know when it was ready. They told me step by step what they had done and what was replaced, etc. I held my breath for the final price and it was amazingly reasonable and fair. I was over the moon. Picked up the machine a day or two later. They went over the repairs again, and reminded me there is a 90 day warranty. My machine is happy and working just fine now. This is the new shop for me even though it means a 50 mile round trip rather than a 10 mile round trip to the other store in Austin. The store is clean and bright and the folks working there are lovely. Going to make the trek up north to check out their fabrics and notions. read more

I called for a price to service my old, heavy duty Singer because I'd removed the bobbin case and couldn't re-insert it. They gave me a reasonable price & a 10 week turn around time. When I explained there was really nothing wrong w/my machine, I just needed to see how to re-install the case, they offered to show me at no charge! I drove over and Tessa (I think that's correct?) whipped out her screw driver, re-installed the case, got her fabric and thread and tested out the stitching, all within about 10 minutes! Incredible! This is where I'll get my next machine. I'd give them 6 stars if I could! read more

Austin Sewing Machines is a store for folks with a great handle on sewing and all the things attached. They have top-of-the-line machines that can go for thousands of dollars. They have fabric, but I found that they were all about $12 a yard. There were no sales here even with the 25% discount for the weekend you'd be much better off at a place like Joannes or Hobby Lobby. There are a lot of threads but again you can find them cheaper elsewhere. Don't let this get you down. If you're more of a pro at sewing this store is for you. Parking can be hard as it shares the lot with the rest of the strip mall and a church. read more

I got my machine back within a week and it has NEVER worked better! I really wish my experiences were better. I want to have a sew'n'vac that I love. Unfortunately, I do not love this place. I have been in only twice, and phoned once, so this review is based solely on my limited experience here. The gentleman that helped me all three times is, for lack of a better word, an ass. I am new at sewing and was made to feel like an idiot. I just moved here, and do not have any contacts, so I am learning via YouTube. I am sorry sew'n'vac man, for not being up to speed with what it is that I need. I thought you would be a good resource. My first experience was shopping for furniture, and when I told him my budget, he laughed and basically told me that I would be better shopping at Walmart. I thought my husband was going to blow. But alas, I found an arrow table that suits my beginner needs perfectly. Little did I know that YOU could have ordered it. Thanks for nothing... The second experience was when I was shopping for a machine foot... I knew what I needed, but I didn't know what it was called. The same gentleman began to describe what each foot did, but not in a kind educational way. Instead, he spoke slowly and deliberately, and made it sound as if he was speaking to a child that was wasting his time. I am an educated woman, who tries to be kind to everyone and I simply want to learn a new hobby. It is already difficult and intimidating to learn the unknown and it's sure disappointing when your resources treat you poorly. This will not discourage me, I just hope it doesn't discourage someone else. YOU will not get my business as I would rather wait for an online sale to reach my home before purchasing from your store. I would like to add that there was a woman behind the counter who was just lovely, and kind... And I wish she was the one to have assisted me. My seven year old Bissell upright was acting up so I thought I'd check in to see if it was worth fixing or time to buy another vacuum. The last vacuum place I'd visited (Austin Vacuum) had closed. I thought it was great to find one closer to my house too. I was running a bunch of errands yesterday so it was a perfect time to go. I walked in to see if they serviced vacuums before I dragged the thing out of my trunk. I hoped they sold them too so I could check a few out. When I walked in it all I saw were sewing machines. So I stood there looking around for vacuums and waited for someone to ask if I needed help. The woman at the fabric cutting table finished working with a customer and I swear gave me a look that was like, "What?" I asked if they serviced vacuums and she said, "Yes." Well, sorry I bothered you, lady! So I wrestled my Bissell out of the car and rolled it into the shop. Was curtly told to talk to the men at the counter. So I waited until a man came over and asked if I needed help. I said I needed my vacuum looked at and he poked around at it. I said I thought it was the beater brush bar's belt. I've had to replace it before. Just thought I'd check anyway. He told me the vacuum service man wasn't there that day. Would've been nice for counter lady to tell me that before I dragged my vacuum in there! The man poked around at my vacuum. Told me the screws were loose on the handle. Moved it around to show me. Kicked it at one point. I didn't really think that had much bearing on the operation or was the cause of the faint burned rubber smell. But, said I'd get that fixed. Anyway, I said I'd just buy a belt and replace it myself since I've done that before. The fabric lady came over and started listening in. They asked me what belt it took. I said I don't know. He looked at the back and told me the model number. So I guess it was up to me to look it up on my phone. I was searching and was getting frustrated with the unhelpful websites I was pulling up. He started walking back to his office. Coincidently I said, " oh come on," to my phone. He turned to me and said I BEG YOUR PARDON? I said, "Oh, sorry, just frustrated with my phone." He went into his office and started doing something else. I assumed he was looking up the part number but nope. She said the part would be a number from 1-8. At this point I just want to get out of the place but I finished finding the belt type. The lady went to the back to find it. Six bucks for a few belts and I got the hell out. The best way I can describe my experience is that I took my vacuum to get serviced in a very disapproving Baptist Sunday school in Alabama. I haven't gone to church in a while but the similar feeling is uncanny. Turns out the belt on the vacuum was ok. I gave up and bought a commercial grade vacuum on Amazon. Two stars for having the belt I need. Negative three stars for being downright unpleasant. read more

The staff are amazing.they are knowledgeable, and gave sat down with me on several,occasions to show me how to use some of the "extras" on the machine that I was not familiar with. Whether it's showing me how to use the automatic buttonholer or explaining how to use a specific foot, or sharing the benefits and potential issues with every type of embroidery thread, the time spent here is well worth it. The selection of fabrics is beyond compare, with many made in reputable oekotex companies in Japan or in the US, at a comparable price to online stores. I have been impressed with the knowledge of their sales-people, and how they have never tried to up-sell me into accessories I didn't really need. If you're not sure what machine to buy, just tell them what you'd like to sew and they'll point you in the right direction. They also do repairs/servicing of sewing machines. After purchasing my machine from them, I also get 10% off accessories & fabric on future visits! They carry far more fabric than I'd expect from a store that also sells vacuums - having several bolts in just about any style you might be looking for. It's not the latest / trendiest fabric ever, but it is certainly sufficient for most projects. Even without the 10% discount, their fabric prices are also very competitive. I have always received great service from these folks. I recently took my Pfaff machine in for regular maintenance work. I was pleasantly surprised when then called to tell me it was ready to be picked up weeks sooner than I expected !!! After using the machine for a couple of weeks something didn't seem quite right with the bobbin tension and this is a machine that should only have the bobbin tension adjusted by a technician so I took it back and they remedied the problem quickly and thoroughly! read more

Went in for first time this morning, very good experience. Amazing fabric selection with good prices for good quality. Tons of machines set up and ready to go, this is great place to go for Janome & Pfaff. Spent awhile trying some sewing machines, the guy was very helpful and honest about what machine he considered good, let me try without high pressure or anything. Lots of great notions available, love the fat quarter, layer cake, and jelly roll selections! They also have vacuum stuff which I didn't realize but will go there for bags when I need them. After taking my serger to the Singer store on Burnet Road, who kept it for weeks without doing anything, I took it to Austin Sew & Vac. After a couple of months I called to see if it was ready, and was told no, so I said I was going to pick it up since I was going to be near anyway. I waited quite a while, and the man who brought it out showed me a broken plate that needed to be replaced. I was able to order the part online, so I suppose showing me what was wrong was helpful, but not even diagnosing the problem for so long was not. read more

I don't write reviews very often, but I do read them, so its about time I wrote one! Took my old Pfaff in for service. It wasn't stitching too well after sitting in storage and the presser foot raised very slowly when released. They did a 'standard service' on my machine. Stitches beautiful now. I took it in on a Thursday and got it back on a Monday. Awesome! They checked everything over and cleaned and adjusted the things that needed adjusted and you can sure tell the difference. A good sewing machine is just that, a machine. And it should be looked at and serviced by a professional at least every couple of years. Totally worth it. Great place to take your machine. read more

A week ago Saturday, I called and asked if they had a roller brush for my vacuum. Bob said he didn't but would order it Monday and it would probably be in by Friday. Friday, I heard nothing and called the store. I was told it hadn't arrived and Bob would call me on Saturday with an ETA. He didn't. He didn't call Monday, either. So Monday afternoon, I called again. Bob said he hadn't ordered it yet! I reminded him that based on his information and promise, I had expected it the preceding Friday. His comment was that he wasn't going to place an order just for me, that he had to wait until he needed enough to justify placing an order! To heck with him. I drove to Austin and got one at Long's. Yes, it's further to go but I could have had it the same day I needed it and not waited 9 days to find out it wasn't even ordered. Won't be back. read more

Took my Singer Confidence in the other day to be repaired- something with the bobbin case is messed up, or maybe I threw he timing off. The gentleman in there told me he would give me an estimate but it would be $80 for the full service if the timing was off and to have it cleaned, whatever. I'd had that done a little over a year ago and had said I hadn't used it much since. He proceeded to tell me what I really needed to do was buy a new machine... Uh, no? The machine is perfectly fine and still retails for almost $300 with great reviews everywhere. He told me "Singers just aren't made like they used to be, people think they are so good and they just aren't anymore." Let me guess, I need to buy a Brother? Made me so annoyed, I sat out in the car stewing for a minute before returning and taking my machine with me. I'd rather drive all the way into Austin for a place that will repair without trying to sell a novice sewer some machine they are dealers for. read more

I took my wife's Singer Embroidery machine in for service because the needle wouldn't move up and down. I left the machine and was told the repair would take about two weeks. Three weeks later I received a call from the service tech telling me that the circuit board was bad. I went in to pick up the machine...luckily I was charged no service call fee...got the machine home and my wife realized she hadn't plugged the footpedal in...that was the problem all along. The service tech didn't even plug the machine in. This was an obvious attempt to sell another machine. From the tiime I walked in the door and the saleman saw what machine I had he started telling me how that machine was notoriously flawed. The service tech and the owner of the business told me the same thing. The service tech told me to tell the salesman that I should get a discount on a new machine. Bad service? Yes. Terrible Customer Service? Yes. I would not recommend you do business with this outfit. read more

I have owned 6 Janome machines over the last 30 years. Since I travel frequently, I have had occasion to visit seven or eight Janome dealers for service, parts and tech support. Several of these dealers have been disappointing in service and knowledge about the machines. However, I am writing to commend and call your attention to Mr. Mike Smith, Manager of Austin Sew and Vac in Austin, Texas. I called Mike last month in hopes that he could help me interface a new Viking 6D embroidery program with my Janome Memory Craft 10,000 which I purchased in 2000. I was unaware that Windows 10 was incompatible with my machine's hardware. Mike committed himself to exploring every possible avenue to solve this problem. Initially he spent over two hours on the phone with me analyzing the problem. Then, he called Janome tech support and spoke with them at length to find an interface between Windows 10 and my machine. He then spent another two hours on the phone with me trying to download programs and testing the results. This kind of help and support is time consuming and frustrating to all parties. Mr. Smith was incredibly patient, focused, and helpful in all aspects of this interaction. I am so appreciative of his interest in his customer and knowledge of the complicated Janome system. This business came highly recommended by several of my sewing friends, however, I was not impressed. The person seemed knowledgeable about the machine. When it came to payment; must have thought that they came upon a hick from the sticks by telling me to pay $xxx up front in cash because I was using a credit card to pay for the machine. Unfortunately for this business, I was already aware that this type of surcharge is not legal in Texas. Since it's located so close to my home and would have been very easy for me to shop there on a regular basis. I am interested in purchasing a new sewing machine and went to this store about 2 weeks ago. I had heard other people comment that the folks here are not friendly but I was undeterred figuring maybe they were just having a bad day. After a less than enthusiastic sales demo where Mike was curt and even unpleasant, acted bored and made zero effort to be personable I decided the comments had not been wrong. Maybe he hates his job but then I have heard he is the owner or part owner so that doesn't make sense. I left wanting to check reviews on line of this machine because he did not make any effort to even talk about it's advantages and to see where else I could buy the machine. I was conflicted, I want the machine but don't want to buy it from this dealer. This is ridiculous because it will cost me the advantage of an extended warranty and classes if I need instruction. But Life is too short to deal with unpleasant people, I can imagine if my experience of wanting to spend over $2k was so poor, having a problem or needing assistance would very likely be worse. I mentioned this dilemma to my sewing circle and found at least a dozen ladies who go to great lengths to not do business here. Methinks Pfaff has made a big mistake, they have wonderful machines, they need a dealer who is enthusiastic and loves their job and their machines. Bottom line, I am buying the machine today.......but not from Austin Sew & Vac. read more
