I've been bringing my brand new toy poodle puppy to Austin Vet Care from the beginning. He's 4 months old now and he got all of his shots here. I trust the doctor and the techs - they seem very genuine and are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Every time I've gone in, they address all my questions and make my little man very comfortable. Takeisha at the front desk is always so sweet. Price-wise, they may indeed be slightly higher than other places, especially within a bigger corps like Petco or PetSmart. And truly, I may change vets at some point, but for now and as a brand new puppy, I wanted to bring my fur baby to a good vet. For example, they quoted me $100+ for him getting microchipped and I wasn't about to pay that much. I ended up getting him microchipped for ~$40 (plus my breeder reimbursed me that amount, too). But again, I personally feel very comfortable and very happy with the service they provide here - though they are sometimes busy (and reply late to text messages) and not very flexible with scheduling (later hours). So, let me start by saying, my original Vet closed and automatically sent all my dogs records here, that's how I ended up with them. I have a senior dog who is diabetic and takes insulin 2x a day. I was away for a few days and knew I was running low, so I placed my order w Chewy(like I do every month). I knew it would be delivered within 2 days, so I had no worries. When I returned home, my bf said, it was never delivered. Mind you this was on a Saturday night @11pm. I immediately called Chewy, only to find out the Vet cancelled my order w no warning, not even a call!!! The reason they gave is my dog was due for her yearly visit. So, instead of calling me, to give me the opportunity to make an appt, they just declined the request for her insulin!!! What kind of Doctor does that???? Disgraceful!!! Since I only had enough for one more shot, I had to get her into an emergency hospital, just for a bottle of insulin. It cost me $800, this was totally avoidable, with just a call or text from the Vet. I have NEVER experienced such unprofessional behavior from a Doctor!!! We brought our dog, Bella in today for a scheduled appointment. Like many dogs, Bella is super anxious and picks up on humans feelings towards her, she requires special care from people who care. Although she is really sweet and has never even nipped anyone, I keep a muzzle on her while she's at the vet because she is scared and nervous. The staff were kind to her and she was comfortable with them, so comfortable that when they clipped her nails they were able to do it without her muzzle. There are many factors to consider when choosing the right vet, quality care, competent staff, safe environment, reasonable prices and more, but the final factor is when Bella chooses the vet. read more

Vet care is expensive. It just is. And maybe AVC charges more than other clinics for procedures and medications; they're a small business doing their best. That said, I have nothing but good feelings about Austin Veterinary Care. My first experience was with my late dog, BillyBob. My father and I brought him to Austin Veterinary Care when he was around 15 years old and suddenly incontinent. The staff and Dr. Miller immediately fell in love with him and were very conscious of the emotions we were all feeling, BillyBob included. Their care and bedside manner made his last moments (following an exam that all but confirmed GI cancer -- for a 95lb dog, 15 years was incredible already) a lot easier to process and savor. We went back to pick up his ashes soon after putting him down and were touched to see that they were in a lovely wooden box with an engraved name plate and a slot for a photo. That slot is now filled with a photo of him and my lovely mother who he deeply missed after she passed the year before. After that experience and the adoption months later of a boroughbred from the ACC, the very same staff got to meet Teddy, my German Shepherd. There must be something magical about the hiring process here because Teddy adores every member of the AVC team. He was seen by the wonderful techs and Dr. Miller for an initial exam, shots, and a scrotal hematoma he sustained from his recent neuter at the shelter. The care he received was wonderful and I knew that we would be sticking with AVC for as long as I live in Queens. Teddy has severe environmental allergies that are very costly to treat, no matter how you look at it. Yet, during such a hard time for all small businesses, the practice manager, Lucy, and her staff have extended incredible generosity to help me improve Teddy's health. I am in no way looking to invalidate the experiences that others have had with this practice or with Dr. Miller. No person or business or perfect. But Austin Veterinary Care is perfect for Teddy and I look forward to the day I discover how to repay the people who work here for the kindness they have showed me. I wish I had a picture of Teddy with the staff he loves so dearly. For now, I will just upload a picture of the bear himself. Do NOT bring your pet to this Vet/Dr.Miller. i took my cat in to see if she has a Urinary tract infection and she came out with bloody paws. Dr. Miller nor the staff mentioned what happened. I realized her injuries after leaving with my cat back home because I refused to pay $1,225 for all the exams he asked for. Example he was asking for $310 for a culture and sensitive test all together where elsewhere they charge between $110 - $115 for both of them together. I found out later that North Animal hospital is much cheaper $110 and also lefferts animal hospital. This Veterinary clinic is doing some serious price gauging plus they mishandled my cat. Yes my cat is not the easiest but my cat has gone in the past to other vets and they handle her with care and she never came out injured like that. So now I have to take her to see another Vet. Update: Spoke with "Dr.Miller" and him and his staff forcefully forced my cat out of the cage instead of opening the cage wide open they brutally force her out through the small opening and my cat was grabbing onto the cage in fear and she injured her front and back nails and bleed. They were so unprofessional. They need to get trained cause it seem like they dont know how to treat an animal that is stressed. Receptionist are very accommodating I have no complains about them. But overall the service isn't very much professional as I expected. I was served by Elie Miodownik, the Possible diagnose that was given to me was over "100" possible thing which his intentions to cause panic was not very cool and although personally I felt like his intentions was more about up selling rather than being concern for my pet. Huge disappointment !! overwhelmed by his chatter I have requested urine test to be taken. Be Aware they do upsell unnecessary test on your pet. Which huge red flag I noticed. Kindly refused. The vibe is lukewarm and both the staff and the Dr's were/are focused on pushing services, like businesses do. Diversity is key, gentlemen: I'm a guy and even I'm not loving the all male Doctor lineup. My cat went in for a reaction to a household cleaner. She got a rabies shot (required by law) and a cortisone shot. One week later and my cat is now sneezing and tired. Additionally, no follow-up call was placed to me regarding her stool sample results. I was told today I could no longer buy a $100 bag of food for my cat recommended by Austin Veterinary Care. This was because my cat was due for shots I have not scheduled yet. I have been a customer for 2 years and was never told that food recommended by Austin Veterinary Care was conditional. Again, my cat does not need to eat the $100 bag of food, but was recommended to do so. I have consistently bought $100 bags of food for my pet. I had a completely positive experience bringing my 2 cats in to Austin Vet for annual checkups. The front desk receptionist Trish was warm and caring and made me feel right at home. I cannot say enough about how gently and flawlessly Dr. Mio and his assistant Christine were in handling my little ones. My cats were street cats who are not tolerant of strangers. In the past vets at other places refused to do the exams unless the cats were sedated (hissing, scratching, biting). Although they were nervous, ears back and tense, my cats tolerated their exams without any drama and fits thanks to the expertise and gentle confident handling by the doctor. My questions were answered thoroughly and patiently and I received some great tips and advice. My cat had a chronic health condition that resulted in many vet visits during her last two years of life. The best course of action had been laid out in the medical records, with the vet from another clinic giving explicit details to Dr. Lu as to what the cat needed. But he saw dollar signs and set out to sell us more vitamin supplements and their cat food as he had previously. (If they ever say they are "giving you" food or supplements, expect it to be on the bill at a high cost.). He appeared to not even look at the medical records or recall the phone call with the other vet. He said the cat was too young to have cancer (the cat was 16). And then he said it was allergies and we needed to have his special food to rule it out. When I questioned this, he got mad. I did not allow them to "give" us any more items. I brought my cat here to get examined for a mouth issue. I was hit with a $2500 estimate. Who has that in a pandemic? I work part-time. I explained that to the staff and I was asked, well how much do you have? In addition to this, instead of giving my cat a shot of antibiotics, I was sent home with a liquid. You would think they would know a cat with mouth issues might have difficulty with taking something orally. My cat cried in pain and hid from me for hours after I gave him the first dose. First off... to Randy R. Who paid you to write such a terrible review? A former disgruntled employee that used to work there? Hmmmm? You're totally full of shit and a liar. There are a lot of LIARS leaving bogus reviews in an attempt to discredit Austin Vet. I had been a client of Trylon for years. They never informed me that they were selling the practice, I only found out when I walked in there. Brought my 16 year old cat to what is now Austin Vet and met Dr. Shark. Told him how important it was for me to have a doctor that was consistent and I can have confidence in. He examined my cat probably 3 times. He "seemed" sincere and caring . My Angel is very sick. He scheduled her for surgery and when I happened to go there about a week before the scheduled surgery to pickup food, I was told he was no longer there! WTF? I was very upset. The receptionist was very empathetic and validated my feelings of anger. No communication at all from him. HE should have informed me, not the staff, HIM. He turned out to be full of shit too. Which brings me to my experience this past week. I met Dr. Miller and I brought Angel in so he can "meet" her before the surgery. Was scheduled to bring her back two days later for a 4:30 appointment but ended up having to rush her there in the morning because she went downhill overnight. Today is DAY 7 that my Angel is there at the facility after undergoing surgery. She was in such bad shape. Dr. Lu performed the surgery and Dr. Miller has been taking care of her all week along with the techs Nicole and Joselyn, and even Trish the receptionist and the office manager Lucy have been there for her. They have been busting their asses taking care of her. Total dedication. I was there yesterday, and today I was there for hours and got to really see firsthand the level of dedication they ALL have. They are doing everything in their power to help her get through this. She's a fighter too. BTW, to everyone who wants to complain about the costs, at the end of the day it is still a business. They have to get paid too. Shit cost money. Same as when you go to your doctor or you get a procedure done. First thing they ask you is.... What insurance do you have? They gotta get paid. Most people don't have pet insurance so it's going to be a big expense. Just imagine if you didn't have health insurance and had to pay out of pocket. Sorry not sorry, but having a pet is a commitment and medical issues are going to happen. Either purchase insurance or start an emergency fund exclusively for pet emergencies. Listen... if someone has a legitimate issue then fine, that's their experience. I saw Dr. Miller in September 2019 and my main issues with Dr. Miller are his lack of communication skills and lack of professionalism, he is very condescending and judgmental when discussing your care for your dog. He also insults you about completely irrelevant things. For example, we stated we lived very close and may be able to run back to our house to pick up a necessary document and he responded with "yea, it looks like you could use the exercise" to my boyfriend. We were very confused and could not believe this VETERINARIAN just commented on my boyfriends weight when it is our dog with which he should be concerned. Then, I let him know I use Sentinel for heartworm medication and he pretty much implied I made a dumb decision when he said "thats not very smart". Then when I asked if I could buy his recommended joint supplements somewhere else other than his office he became petty and passive aggressive and said to his receptionist "Ms. ___ here thinks she can find it for cheaper somewhere else" Just COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL. There was SO MANY other unprofessional behaviors but I am not going to list them all. The main reason I am writing a review today in April 2020 is because I called in for a dental emergency for my dog and they tried to schedule a routine physical on top of the dental emergency visit even though she just had her physical in September 2019. Can you focus on the emergency I am calling in for and stop trying to get as much money out of me as possible? On top of that, we are in the GLOBAL COVID19 PANDEMIC and every responsible veterinarian is trying to limit exposure and mitigate risk by suspending all wellness visits. She had a FULL PHYSICAL in September so why does she need another one now during a global pandemic when she isn't even due for her annual checkup? If you are reading this Dr. Miller, work on your professionalism and communication skills because having a degree and vet license doesn't make you a professional. Regardless, I am never going to let my dog be your patient again. Your office has shown that you have no regard for public health and only care about profits. All the restrictions and signs you have on your door are clearly for show and just to protect yourself and not the public. I'm writing another update on my experience with Austin Vet Care because my husband and I got a second dog and didn't hesitate for a moment as to whether we would bring her to Austin Vet Care. Dr. Miller has been so helpful, especially as our puppy had an upset stomach for a few days and we had to take her in unexpectedly. They have good COVID precautions in place and we don't worry when they take our pups inside as to whether they are in good hands. Dr. Miller answered my many questions on the phone with detailed and informative answers, and even went so far as to recommend something we could do when I mentioned that our puppy really struggled taking her medication, and also checked to see whether there was a pill form of the medication available for her weight. Amanda has also been a total gem to work with, she is incredibly nice and helpful. If we were to move out of Forest Hills at some point, I think my first concern would be about finding another vet to take care of our babies! read more

We used to go to Trylon and liked it, but then they were bought out by Austin Vet Clinic, and the new place is super shady. We made an appointment to refill a prescription and they instructed us to bring a stool sample, giving no indication that this was optional. So we did. Then at the end of the visit, the bill was more than 200 dollars. Turns out the fecal test, that we neither wanted nor needed, was more expensive than the full medical exam. They're out here taking advantage of pet parents who just want to do the best for their little ones. They need to be more transparent with their pricing. Best to avoid this place. read more

Do NOT take your animal here. Worst vet office ever. We just moved to the area from Suffolk county, Long Island. Before moving, we made sure to contact this place so that our 14 year old diabetic cat could continue her treatment plan. We sent her records three weeks earlier and you think they could take 5 minutes to read them over before we got there? Not a chance. For years, our former vet was giving our cat steroid injections as long her blood sugar was under control. Admittedly, not all vets would want to do this but this idiot would know that if he read her records and could have told us before we dragged our cat all the way in there. He wanted to "remove all her teeth" before giving her the injection. So he really wanted us to have to pay him thousands of dollars. I took my cat and stormed out of that abysmal, disgustingly inhumane office. Now my cat has to suffer because she will be in pain until we can find another appointment. My dog had an eye infection during the winter and our primary veterinarian was out of town, so I took him to Austin Veterinary Care. I agreed to pay for a general physical exam in addition to evaluating his eye, since he was a new patient to them. Because of common veterinary COVID-19 protocol, I could not enter the clinic myself and had to wait outside in the cold. They told me the visit would take 15-20 minutes, but I ended up waiting outside for closer to 2 hours. I never met the veterinarian in person, and only spoke with him over the phone. He told me that my dog had significant gingivitis and would likely need multiple teeth extracted. They gave me a quote for about $1200-$1600 to perform all the dental care he would need. I was startled to hear this, despite knowing that my wife and I have struggled providing proper dental hygiene for our dog. He added that my dog was suffering due to oral infections and it would be cruel not to go ahead with the procedures and likely surgery. I ended up waiting to speak with our established vet about this. She saw our dog 1 week later and concluded there is no way to determine the severity of his gingivitis without imaging, which our dog had not yet received. Furthermore, he did not appear to be suffering, and I personally feel that the vet at Austin Care was likely taking advantage of my emotions. Our established vet recommended a proper dental cleaning under anesthesia, which was not urgently needed. My wife and I continued our dog's care with her, and he got his dental cleaning 3 months after the initial visit at Austin Care. Ultimately, he did not need ANY teeth extracted. The final bill was about $800 in total for all his dental care. In conclusion, my experience at Austin Veterinary Care was terrible. They tried to make me feel like a horrible dog parent if I did not agree to a procedure that would have likely been aggressive, unnecessary, and would have certainly worsened my dog's quality of life. I think from the very start, they were price gouging and tried to rack up my bill as much as possible. I am grateful that I did not continue my dog's care with them and I don't intend to return to their clinic again. read more

Horrible service...they overcharge and do unnecessary procedures in order to get more money from you. They charged us almost $600 for a regular check up for our healthy cat, including $200 on a rash (without explaining what they thought was occurring or asking consent before performing procedures). The vet techs were good with my cat (who is admittedly a nightmare at the vet) but the vet himself (Dr. Shark) was dismissive, minimally answered questions, and bent a needle while giving my cat an injection (which was another non-informed consent procedure for almost $200) and proceeded to reuse the bent needle to finish the dose.
