We had an extremely troubling experience at AVDH and want to share our story so others can make an informed decision about entrusting their pets to this practice. In April, our dog Phyllis began experiencing recurrent nosebleeds. In early June, we visited AVDH for a CT scan and rhinoscopy. Dr. Pascoe recommended a CT scan and biopsy instead, explaining that a rhinoscopy would not provide clear images in a bloody, inflamed nasal cavity. We trusted his professional judgment and agreed to proceed. The CT scan revealed a mass occupying nearly her entire right nasal cavity, from her back canine tooth to just below her eye. The report stated: "Destructive right-sided rhinitis. Neoplasia is prioritized (i.e., adenocarcinoma, sarcoma). Less likely infectious/inflammatory." Dr. Pascoe told us he believed the mass was cancerous and assured us that the biopsy samples were excellent, even reaching far into her nasal cavity. Two weeks later, Dr. Pascoe called, expressing surprise that it wasn't cancer. Instead, he suggested it was just inflammation, possibly an autoimmune condition or allergies. While relieved, we were confused by the dramatic change in diagnosis. His treatment plan consisted of a month-long course of Zeniquin (antibiotic) and Rimadyl (anti-inflammatory), which we agreed to despite the significant cost. After approximately three weeks, Phyllis's condition deteriorated. We contacted Dr. Pascoe, and he prescribed doxycycline. Shortly afterward, Phyllis suffered a severe nosebleed that brought us to the ER on July 21st. It took over two hours to stabilize her enough for transfer to AVES, a facility better equipped for her case. At AVES, It was during a consultation that we learned her original biopsy had been a blind biopsy -- performed without direct visualization of the tissue. They suggested a rhinoscopy was the better option, that they can exactly see what they are sampling. This revelation immediately explained the earlier misdiagnosis and raised the concern for cancer once again. A properly guided biopsy and rhinoscopy confirmed both infection/rhinitis and nasal chondrosarcoma (nasal cancer). Had this cancer been identified in June, Phyllis could have begun radiation treatment two months earlier. Instead, the delay -- caused by an incomplete diagnostic approach and a lack of awareness that rhinitis often accompanies nasal tumors -- has been devastating both emotionally and financially. We were further concerned to learn that Rimadyl (an NSAID) can impair blood clotting, potentially worsening her severe nosebleed on July 21st. AVDH denied this risk, despite reputable veterinary sources indicating otherwise. After receiving the confirmed cancer diagnosis, we contacted AVDH seeking accountability, a refund to help offset treatment costs, and most importantly, an apology for the mistake. We were told that Dr. Pascoe "did a great job," that he "did not cause the cancer," and that Rimadyl has no clotting risk -- dismissing both our concerns and well-documented evidence to the contrary. We are devastated and angered by this experience and do not want any other pet or family to suffer a similar outcome. Please exercise caution when choosing a veterinary provider.

Kind, caring, professional and knowledgeable!! I was nervous about seeking a second opinion in regards to the health of our young dog- a rescue Belgian Malinois mix. However, from the moment I opened the door to their office, I felt at peace with the care we were given. I especially appreciated Dr. Varga and staff for making sure our concerns were addressed. I felt heard and hopeful that we are on the right path for the best health care possible for our newest family member!!

I've had a wonderful experience with Austin Veterinary Diagnostic Hospital. Dr. Varga performed a total ear canal ablation on my 11 year old cat beautifully. The vet tech, Matthew, was amazing as well. He sent me a picture of my cat when she came out of surgery, which was much appreciated. Even the front desk staff is a pleasure. I'm so glad I found this vet!

Leaving another review because I am just so appreciative of Dr. Sarah and her amazing team. I am so thankful to have found a place that took such good care of my baby, even though it was only two months that I'd been going to this hospital they took the best care of my Oliver, they were fast, careful, smart, and when I needed them they were always there to answer any of my questions or give me tissues as I said goodbye to my bestfriend. Thank you all at Austin diagnostic for showing your outermost love, care, and expertise in taking care of my baby during his life and after. I will forever appreciate you all.

Wonderful experience bringing a friends pet to AVDH! Dr. Sarah and her team are so thorough and kind. She kept us in the loop every step of the way. Our wait in the room was longer than anticipated but the care from this team made it okay. They checked in on us, offered us bottled water and coffee, and let us know how long they anticipated each step to take. We will definitely be sharing how much we loved this veterinary clinic to friends and family. (Remember to check in! You get free dog treats!)

I brought my dog Ginger to this hospital for the first time for an ultrasound because of high liver enzymes.... quickly she was diagnosed with a Liver Mass with a CT to follow to rule out other organ involvement. She was scheduled for surgery to remove the mass. Unfortunately, her liver was full of nodules and her condition was terminal. Ginger and I were best friends for 12 years- this sudden heartbreaking news was shocking and unexpected. We were treated with dignity and respect. Dr Varga and all the staff were very kind and compassionate. I was allowed to love on her one last time before she was put to rest. Having that special time with Ginger is a memory I will forever cherish. Thank you from the bottom of my heart

I wish I could give this veterinarian office more than 5 stars because they are absolutely incredible. We have been seeing Dr. Varga for the last 5 years and he is not only personable and kind with people he is incredible with pets. He just LOVES his job and it shows. I have taken my guinea pigs and dog Vanta here and they are always wonderful with the care we receive. I have moved from Austin and will still drive 30-40 mins to come to this clinic because the care and staff are just that exceptional. Highly recommend!

My usual vet, who we have been seeing since adopting the cat almost 2 years ago, rudely dismissed my concerns over the phone and insisted that I needed to pay an $80 office visit fee just to get an answer to my question over the phone (the question was "What does the PCR panel test for?"). I started calling every other vet in Austin to find a clinic that has experience with Tritrichomonas and that I felt comfortable with. Several clinics admitted that they did not know what the parasite was or had never treated it before. Another lied and said "oh, that is super easy to treat and really common and straightforward!" which I knew was not accurate from the empirical literature online. I finally found Austin Urban Vet and the experience we have had so far has genuinely been night and day different from pervious clinics. From the very first call, the AUV team was empathetic to our situation, VERY transparent about pricing (they provided it in writing), and explicitly clear about which PCR diagnostic panel they use at AUV and exactly what it tests for. They were open and honest about their experience with Tritrichomonas and I immediately felt at ease and confident in the care that they could provide my cat. After chatting with my partner about my findings from calling almost every vet in Austin, we both agreed Austin Urban Vet was the best one to move forward with, so we made an appointment. Right off the bat, I was happy to find that AUV has a private parking lot (for free!). I headed inside with my cat and the team at the front desk was so kind and helpful. They quickly checked me in and invited me to grab a bottle of water or make myself a cup of coffee as I waited for the tech to take us into the room. We waited for maybe ~5 minutes before the tech took us to the exam room, where she scanned my cat for her microchip, weighed her, and asked questions about the presenting problem, history, etc. Dr. Helen was who attended us for the exam itself, and she was so kind and thorough. I really felt that she was providing genuine feedback, and she was honest about her experience with this parasite. She was transparent about the treatment plan and let me know her general thoughts (Ie., "If she is still positive, we will do X. If she is negative, we can try Y.") We are now waiting for the PCR results, but so far, I am so happy with our experience and feel confident that Dr. Helen will provide us with the best care possible.

SOUTH PARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL is now owned by a VENTURE CAPITAL FIRM called National Veterinary Associates, which in turn is owned by JAB Holding company, JAB has tripled in size since it started buying up vets and charging confiscatory prices, taking advantage of our love of our pets. I gave them two stars because at least they did my cat right and he's fine now. BUT they started burying me in pitch emails too, trying to feed fear about my cat's health, constantly trawling me for more money, more money, more money, all while pretending to care about my cat when they don't.
