My cat was recently diagnosed (at a different vet) with a somewhat rare parasite (Tritrichomonas), and I was having a hard time finding a vet I felt confident in. My usual vet, who we have been seeing since adopting the cat almost 2 years ago, rudely dismissed my concerns over the phone and insisted that I needed to pay an $80 office visit fee just to get an answer to my question over the phone (the question was "What does the PCR panel test for?"). I started calling every other vet in Austin to find a clinic that has experience with Tritrichomonas and that I felt comfortable with. Several clinics admitted that they did not know what the parasite was or had never treated it before. Another lied and said "oh, that is super easy to treat and really common and straightforward!" which I knew was not accurate from the empirical literature online. I finally found Austin Urban Vet and the experience we have had so far has genuinely been night and day different from pervious clinics. From the very first call, the AUV team was empathetic to our situation, VERY transparent about pricing (they provided it in writing), and explicitly clear about which PCR diagnostic panel they use at AUV and exactly what it tests for. They were open and honest about their experience with Tritrichomonas and I immediately felt at ease and confident in the care that they could provide my cat. After chatting with my partner about my findings from calling almost every vet in Austin, we both agreed Austin Urban Vet was the best one to move forward with, so we made an appointment. Right off the bat, I was happy to find that AUV has a private parking lot (for free!). I headed inside with my cat and the team at the front desk was so kind and helpful. They quickly checked me in and invited me to grab a bottle of water or make myself a cup of coffee as I waited for the tech to take us into the room. We waited for maybe ~5 minutes before the tech took us to the exam room, where she scanned my cat for her microchip, weighed her, and asked questions about the presenting problem, history, etc. Dr. Helen was who attended us for the exam itself, and she was so kind and thorough. I really felt that she was providing genuine feedback, and she was honest about her experience with this parasite. She was transparent about the treatment plan and let me know her general thoughts (Ie., "If she is still positive, we will do X. If she is negative, we can try Y.") We are now waiting for the PCR results, but so far, I am so happy with our experience and feel confident that Dr. Helen will provide us with the best care possible. read more

This vet is terrible. The ladies at the front desk were sweet enough, but the actual vet was awful. She was incredibly condescending, rudely dismissed all of my concerns (which I thought were pretty valid), and just tried to bully me into proceeding with her proposed treatment plan. Any time I questioned her recommendations, she would start talking about payment plans, suggesting that I couldn't afford the treatment, which really pissed me off. A human doctor would never speak to anyone like that, so for some tatted up "vet" to do so was absolutely unacceptable. I heard good things about this place, but I couldn't wait to get out there. I would gladly spend thousands on my dog, but I sure as hell will never spend a cent of that money here! Good riddance. read more

Dr. Helen has taken care of four aging dogs for me, and a younger lab that I was keeping temporarily. Her diagnosing and treatment plans have been conservative and thoughtful and I have 100% confidence in her judgment. She is an excellent, empathetic listener and her follow-up is amazing, often calling me with updates on weekends and in the evenings to make sure I have the most current updates. meant to leave this review much sooner but alas, I am here now! I was a customer for this clinic for about 2 years while in Austin. They took wonderful care of my Scotty, always kind and generous with the treats and attention at the front desk. Very attentive to phone calls and emails. I took Scotty here to set up regular preventative appointments and then again during an emergency. Now, I couldnt' take him the day he was actually hit by a car because they weren't open on Saturdays, but we were able to bring him right in first thing that following Monday and they were able to help him with his broken metatarsal bones in his hind legs WITHOUT surgery! Which we had been told at the emergency center we went to on the weekend was likely what would be needed. Thank God we came back to our vet (Mike!) for a second opinion! I was able to get Scotty in for 9 weekly appointments to heal his hind legs with regular bandage changes and a splint. Our last visit we went in healthy for check ups. There was a recommendation for getting the Bordetella at six months intervals. We said that we were going to skip and do it yearly because we are a little more holistic and have also felt that like the flu vaccine it depends on the strain. We have had kennel cough in the past year and at that time we were two months off of having our Bordetella vaccine and we still got the absolute worst case of it. The vaccine at that time seemed of no help! So on this particular visit we turned it down. We went home from the vet and three days later we had kennel cough. Our dog does not play with other dogs, it does not drink out of other dog bowls and he pretty much stays in our own yard. I did notice that when we went into the room it was full of dog hair from another animal that had been in there previously. The tech even apologized for it being a mess. They took my dog to the back to give him other vaccines and then brought him back to me. I truly believe he got kennel cough from this place. read more

I have been using this vet since I got my dog a little under two years ago, and I am so sad to be leaving them (due to me moving). I trust this staff so implicitly. They have taken such excellent care of my dog, for everything from vaccines to urgent care appointments for rashes or lumps and bumps. Dr. Study especially has a special place in my heart for seeing us for an urgent appointment during the "mystery dog illness" era. She offered a variety of treatment and test options, allowing me to choose more of a wait-and-see approach with antibiotics versus doing X-rays and expensive bloodwork. They are very understanding of budgets, and they always make my dog feel safe and me feel heard. They are very Covid conscious and came to my car to get my dog and take her in. She had shots, anal gland expression, and a check up. The vet called me in the parking lot and spent probably 15-20 minutes with me telling me what all they did, what they suggest I do at home, and ways to make my puppy the most healthy she can be. I highly recommend this vet because the level of care with social distancing is even MORE than many vets I've been to with in-office visits. I want to preface this by saying this review has nothing to do with the veterinary practice, my puppy and I both love Dr. Shannon, and she is great with him. I'm writing this in regards to Upper Paw and their playcare program. I took my 4 1/2 month old puppy in for his playcare evaluation last week. They gave me all of the instructions to the live streams so that I could check in on him throughout the day. This was his first time around a large number of other dogs, so I did expect him to be a little bit nervous. I picked him up later that day, and the staff said that he did great and they would love to see him again. I decided to bring him back again yesterday. I didn't have much time to check in on him throughout the day, and planned on heading over right after work to pick him up. I got a call later in the afternoon about him having an accident in his crate, and they asked if I wanted them to bathe him for an additional fee. I didn't think much of it in the moment, but he has not had an accident in his crate except for the very first night I brought him home when he was 8-weeks old. When I arrived to pick him up, I watched the staff go back to get him, and they pulled him out of a small wire crate, not one of the suites that he was in last time. When we got in the car, I noticed that he had rubbed the top of his nose raw. My family has another lab, and this usually happened when he got anxious in his crate. There was no mention of this when I picked him up. Both of these things happening make me wonder how long he was left in his crate throughout the day. I brought him there to play and socialize with other dogs, not to sit in his crate long enough to have an accident and rub his nose raw. Maybe they were overcrowded or understaffed, but if that was the case, they should not have told me that I could bring my puppy in for playcare. I have reached out to Upper Paw to let them know about all of this, but it was after hours, so I'm not expecting to hear back from them until Monday. Like I said before, we love his vet there and will continue to bring him there for his appointments, but I will not be taking him back to Upper Paw. read more

UPDATE: My fiancé and I had the opportunity to speak with Becky, the Upper Paw coordinator, yesterday afternoon (he spoke, I listened in). She reached out to us to address our experience over the weekend, and it's very clear that she cares deeply about her business, her clients, and the animals in her care. After speaking with her, I do not believe that Upper Paw is malicious or intentionally deceptive. However, I still cannot in good faith recommend this business. My read on the situation after our conversation yesterday is that Upper Paw has a staffing/training issue. It's evident that they are overcrowded, understaffed, and that the young team that Becky oversees lacks experience and true expertise. Becky explained that she was away over the weekend, and perhaps if she had been there, Nola's experience would have been quite different. But it's certainly a problem if a coordinator cannot leave her team for the weekend and trust that an acceptable level of service will be provided. In college, I worked at an enrichment center/aftercare program, and it was honestly the most high-stakes job I've ever had, because while those little lives were under my watch, I was responsible for keeping them healthy, safe, and whole. If parents had any questions when they picked up their child, I had to be prepared with answers, and especially when it came to health, safety, behavior, and conflict, not just answers, but documentation. I also had to be proactive about sharing information. Even if they didn't ask. If a kid hits their head, and I don't inform the parent, and the parent discovers the bump when they get home, I've lost that parent's trust. They'll wonder if I knew, if I didn't, was the bump a result of my actions or negligence, did it involve another child, was the injury looked at and treated, was their child given any medications, were they injured in any other way? Those were the thoughts and feelings we had when we picked up Nola. We don't have kids. Nola is our baby. And I think any business that cares for little furry lives should follow the same protocols and procedures that a childcare program would. While I don't believe Upper Paw is intentionally trying to mislead clients, I do feel that the website/description of services are misleading, or at least vague enough to be open to interpretation. Becky explained to us that their services are more daycare/playgroup geared as opposed to individual play, and since Nola was a little nervous/overwhelmed by the playgroup, Upper Paw probably isn't a good fit for her. I so wish that had been better outlined from the get go. The intake forms we filled out stated that if we'd prefer Nola not participate in playgroups, she'd get individual play time with the staff. I believe Nola did get individual play time. But based on how frequently we checked the camera, and how often she was alone and crying, I don't think it was more than a few of hours of play over the course of three full days. That's also what should have been communicated to us over the weekend. If Upper Paw isn't a good fit for my dog, I want to know as soon as possible. If she's struggling, I want to know as soon as possible. Nobody should have told us that she warmed up, had fun, and that they can't wait to see her again next time if it truly wasn't the right environment for her. Most importantly, Upper Paw not being the best fit for Nola does not excuse the physical and emotional condition she was in when we picked her up. Becky was empathetic, apologetic, took full responsibility, comped Nola's stay, and offered to pay for any vet and grooming bills we have as a result of the weekend. She also said she would share Nola's records from the weekend with us, which we are looking forward to receiving and reviewing. And while all of those things were absolutely the right thing to do, they don't undo the harm that was done. It's really hard for me to share this feedback, because Becky is a very kind person from what I can gather, and I do believe she's devastated by what happened. But I still feel obligated to share our experience, because if anyone is researching accommodation options for their beloved pet, I want to ensure they have as many data points as possible so they can make a decision they feel confident in. In a nutshell, Upper Paw's staffing, training, documentation, and communication practices resulted in a very negative experience for us and most importantly for Nola. No matter how bighearted and well-intentioned Becky and her team are, they did lose our trust and our business. We appreciate very much how seriously Becky is taking the situation, and I hope that big changes are made as a result. read more

I've been going to the groomer next door for years, and I got a referral to Dr. Heidi Nascimi when my geriatric doggo was having some very scary symptoms. Heidi was incredibly supportive and patient with all of my questions. She really helped calm my fears and has remained an integral part of Charlie's care since. The facilities are immaculate and the frontend staff are all professional and kind. I thought being downtown I'd be paying an arm and a leg - but the services were pretty reasonable in cost as well. I went here for a health certificate and after paying $100 and taking 2 trips to the office, I ended up having to go to another vet to get another one. First of all, they put the wrong name on the certificate. When I mentioned the name needing to be fixed, I asked for the date to be changed to today's date which was closer to the date of travel. Being that I was going to Mexico, it needed to be no more than 5 days old. They said sure, and sent me the corrected forms via email. I needed originals and so I went down to grab them. When I arrived the name was fixed, but the date was now back to the original (this was a matter of 2 days difference) and a person named Taylor told me they couldn't change it because it was the time of visit. Well, for one, Mexico doesn't care when the visit was, they just need the cert to be dated 5 days from travel, so that was super annoying. Secondly, why did they change the date, only to change it back so that when I arrived it would be the old date again? I told them my date of travel when I made the appointment, so if they are going to charge $100 for a travel certificate, they should have been aware they were giving me a useless piece of paper. This is on me of course, being that I set the appointment, but the office literally showed no responsibility for their gaffe or interest in helping to fix it. I mean they almost did, but then syke! I asked for refund and Taylor said the manager would reach out to me in a few days (Thursday to be exact) and no one ever did. read more

After searching for a boarding facility and vet after recently moving from Portland,OR our needs were meet but our expectations exceeded here. As soon as we walked in my dog and I were treated like we already belonged there. They provided immediate care without an appointment and no wait, and then showed me the entire facility. The most important part of interviewing a boarding place for me is to see the staff interact with the dogs. Not a show, but a glimpse of a normal day. The team at Austin Urban Vet Center exceeded my expectations. Last week, i took my dog Clover to AUVC for the first time. It was time for her annual check up and i was concerned about the severity of her seasonal allergies. Dr. Shannon was so kind to us. Social distanced vet visits are obviously new and weird for everyone. Clover was inside on the exam table, and i was in my car. Dr. Shannon called me on the phone while she performed the exam. She found that clover had an abscessed tooth, and informed me that seasonal allergies are seemingly worse for everyone this year, no cause for extra concern, but offered a monthly allergy shot or OTC allergy medication as an alternative. I got an estimate for her oral cleaning and tooth removal (expensive, but expected as it involves anesthesia) and scheduled it for the following Wednesday (today!) Everything went well and they sent clover home with a certificate of bravery and personalized her take-home bag!!! So sweet. I think we finally found our new vet! read more

We have been long time fans of Austin Urban Veterinary Center since it first opened for business. Without exception, we have been impressed by the vets that have taken care of our dogs over the years. We recently took our 13 year old Chihuahua in for a diagnosis and worked with Dr. Mike Porta, DVM. Dr. Mike determined the problem was caused by an infected tooth and some associated issues. The surgery schedule was full, but he was able to work our dog in for a successful procedure earlier than expected. Three days later, our dog has recovered, is eating his regular food, and going on short walks on the Shoal Creek Trail. Just moved to Austin and needed a new vet! Saw so many good reviews and decided to bring our 3 cats here for vaccine updates. They got our previous vet's info and called them immediately for info transfer which I thought was really nice. Dr. Jessica was seriously so sweet and kind and took care of our kitties so well, and the front desk folks were soo nice as well. They were respectful and considerate of any questions or concerns we had about our cats too. Everything was super clean and professional. One of our kitties was feeling not so well and I felt super secure that she would get the treatment she needs there. Our puppy/dog went here for all of their checkups, spaying, vaccines, etc., resulting in us spending thousands of dollars in vet fees (which was expected).The staff is courteous, nice and knowledgeable. They do a great job handling our pup and do a very good job providing attentive and affection care. However, their prices for any medication (flea tick heartworm) and/or anti-anxiety medication (Trazodone) is absurd and I highly recommend getting these prescriptions sent to an actual pharmacy. They are so egregious that I felt like I had to write a review on the price gouging occurring on trazodone. Here is an example. We are going on a road trip and need some anti-anxiety medication for our dog. Email in to Urban vet asking for some medication, they say "great", come down whenever to get the prescription. I show up, spend $17.90 for 5 tablets of 100mg of Trazodone. The "regular" price for 100 tablets of 100mg of Trazodone at any other pharmacy (Walmart, Tractor Supply, Chewy.com, HEB, etc.) is around $13 I understand the convenience factor and Urban Vet not being a pharmacy, so they need to make money somehow and I would expect to pay more than a regular pharmacy, but the markup on Trazodone at Urban vet (five 100mg tablets for $17.90) vs. $13 for 100 tablets @ 100mg at any other pharmacy is over a 20x markup. We found a similar situation when paying for Simparica Trio (heart worm / flea / tick medication). Overall, if you live in the area and need a Vet, Urban Vet is a good option but be aware of excessive (borderline fradulent?) overcharging for medications / prescriptions, etc. read more

I've been out of Austin for two years now and I still can't find boarding that compares to Upper Paw Pet resort. I truly felt so at ease taking my baby goldendoodle there. They sent me daily pictures, report cards, even a surprise photo with Santa over the holidays. I love that they also have cameras in the room so I can see him. If he had even the slightest problem during boarding like an itch, they would give me a call. I love that it is near the vets office so they can check out any problems they may notice during boarding. For someone who has a special needs dog, knowing that a vet is a door away from my baby's boarding is all the peace I need. He always loves coming here, is so excited to get in there and play with his friends. Coming home from upper paw, he's always mellow and calm after spending all of his energy playing. read more

Given it's a time of COVID, they are doing a parking lot pet pick up/drop off (the vet technician met us at my car, asked a few questions about Dupre's history, and then escorted my cat in his carrier to the vet's office). The vet technician, I believe his name was John, was very friendly and asked if I have any questions or concerns that I wanted to ask Dr Heidi about (being the neurotic cat mom I am, I did, of course). I waited (anxiously!) in my car for a phone call from Dr Heidi, which came about 10 min later. Considering how busy it was, I'm impressed at her ability to thoroughly evaluate the health and needs of my cat. She updated me on how the exam went and all the costs that it would take ($59 for the exam, $30 for a 3-year vaccination, $30 for medication) before charging my card and proceeding with the shots. I was able to ask all the crazy cat lady questions I had and she was very patient with me. Being as it was a new place, new people, and I wasn't there, Dupre was a nervous (what can I say, I know the cat ain't brave). She was very understanding and knew to not push him too far. He needed additional testing (as he has a prior medical condition), and she offered to reschedule for another time, with no additional exam fee, after he's had time to recoup and have some anti-anxiety medication. Dr Heidi definitely understands both the physical and psychological needs of my cat and I couldn't be more pleased with this clinic. She even called after the appointment to follow up on the medication dosage/instruction and ask how he was doing. TLDR; knows her stuff & genuinely cares! Bring your pet here! read more

I love this vet center. They are always very friendly, easy to get a hold of, communicative on results and have a knowledgeable team. The parking situation isn't ideal but I've luckily always snagged a spot. I think they are careful not to overbook, I've never had a long wait time either. Both me and my cat had a wonderful vet experience. It was very easy to book an appointment and the receptionists are super friendly. They have separate dog and cat rooms and the tech I got explained everything thoroughly. My vet was Jessica and she's wonderful. Everyone there is extremely nice and fun. I have been coming to Austin Urban Vet Center for over 2 years now and I honestly will not take my 3 dogs anywhere else. All the doctors are great, but I personally prefer Dr. Helen and Cali as my tech. The facility is amazing, staff is friendly, and they truly care about my dogs as much as I do. When my dog was sick I was pretty concerned about leaving him in a cage throughout the day when I left him here. Dr. Helen and her awesome staff sent me pictures via text every hour to ensure that my pup was happy and safe. I would recommend this place to anyone read more
