Our annual visit to the vet is always a chore, we need to make individual trips for each pet and our two anxious pups require drugs for their anxiety and sometimes multiple trips if they are still reactive to the exam. I can't believe I went so long before reviewing this wonderful man. I am extremely over protective of my babies (2 cats) and I almost have a panic attack taking them to the vet. When they cry, I start to cry. And I know most people who get house calls for a vet probably have sick animals.. I'm just nuts. Luckily my fiancee is nuts about them too or I'd probably have a future as a crazy cat lady. About my cats: one is 'iffy' about strangers petting her.. she likes to decide if you get to touch her (unless you are a skinny gay man--she loves my GBF.. even runs to the phone if I'm talking to him) and the other want everyone to hold him and will cry at your feet until you acknowledge him. When Matt came in the apartment BOTH cats wanted to be his friend. He took time to let them warm up to him unlike most vets just grab them and start poking and prodding. He spent time talking about food with us (I may also be one of those people who buys the cans of food that are close to $2 a piece) and I absolutely LOVE that he doesn't push extra vaccinations. We're just shy of 7 years by about a month from when Dr. Bendall first met my kitty Wesley, and I can say he's the best vet I've ever worked with. I chose to work with Dr. Bendall, because I was tired of my kitty being so scared of going to vet clinics. I also didn't like that most vet clinic visits were spent with the tech and about 3-5 minutes of the vet running in quickly to talk to me in between other patients. Every visit with Dr. Bendall is about 1-1.5 hours of one-on-one time with him. He goes through your pet's health history with you there, discusses any changes from when he last saw your pet, and then he actually spends time with your pet, his patient. He also has a great tech, Michelle, who accompanies him. Everything you talk about is noted, and any support needed during exams is taken care of by her. She's super nice, and they're both very gentle and patient. Just as important to me, and the reason why I'm writing this update, was when I had to face the end of Wesley's life. I can't even begin to express the gratitude my husband and I have for being able to euthanize our little kitty at home with us instead of in a cold clinic. We were able to have a few final hours with him in the warmth and peace of our home. Dr. Bendall was fully booked that day, but he went through great effort to rearrange his schedule since Wesley's condition was dire. Throughout the entire process, he and Michelle were incredibly thoughtful, helpful, patient, kind and gentle with us and Wesley. We never felt rushed or embarrassed by our deep grief. One additional note, we wanted Wesley cremated, and they would have taken him to the crematorium for us, but we declined. I couldn't bear to let my kitty out-of-sight, so I took him myself to an exceptional place called Austin Pet Memorial Center. This was our first time trying a mobile vet. Topo (our large cat) gets very stressed being shoved into a kennel and taken to the vet office and honestly won't let anyone touch him unless I am holding him. Dr Bendall was incredible and didn't even bother him until he absolutely had to. He was extremely patient and spent the entire time explaining food and diet to us and what our options were as far as the small bite (what we made the appointment for initially). In nearly 5 years no vet has said Topo was over weight but Dr Bendall spent time making sure we were educated on proper diet and even sent notes suggesting certain foods. Another awesome visit with Dr. Bendall. He is so patient and gentle. He sees both of my boys together. The dogs don't even bark at him when he comes. Buddy barks at every body. Ruger is very high strung and difficult to handle when you try to hold him down to look at him. But Dr. Bendall and his assistant were so patient and were able to get the vitals they needed. Not an easy task with Ruger. I am always impressed with how he handles with ease such a hyper tense dog like Ruger. Dr. always has great suggestions for maintaining good health for the boys. I've had a lot of experience using vets and clinics but nothing comes close to the offerings of Dr. Bendall and his team. They are generous, exacting, beyond patient and can empathize to near ESP levels. What people say is true, he really is Dr. Doolittle, and has a way with people too. As an aging punk rocker with a truly insufferable personality I can say that with authority. I needed a house vet to oversee my very proactive attempts to extend the life of an 18 yr old feline brought down by Chronic Kidney Disease and severe anemia. Kamikaze, who I couldn't bear to take to another brick and mortar vet has always needed sedation before any dare go near her. She was running out of time. I was angry from turning my spare room into a pet hospital, obeying current CKD treatment cornerstones to the letter, using expensive and obscure pharmaceutical agents I can't even pronounce that are reputed to work but were not working for her. We needed a no BS provider who would jump on board right away, wherever the train was headed. Dr. Bendall knows his stuff and is cool with partnership, not one power struggle in this 4 week journey of what seems like constant contact. Most important was his way with Kamikaze, he built a relationship with her, it was deliberate, and a comfort to observe. He's been to my house four times this month, by the 3rd time she was climbing on his lap, and didn't even notice when he was sticking needles into her. Kamikaze started dying Thursday, I refused to believe it and still had ideas. I exhausted every option, all along wondering when he would walk out and leave me to my empowering websites, but no. You don't have to conduct arguments in your head with him, you can say what you think and keep at it until clarity prevails. Yesterday was all guilt and ambivalence and hoping for a miracle, but by the time Dr. Bendall arrived I'd already lit a candle and put Hope Sandoval on the stereo, foreseeing a sacred circle of support, and he showed up for that. Kamikaze was glad to see him. It's as if they had actually bonded. It's a mystery, she hates vets but loved Dr. Bendall. He gave her a complete and gentle examination, then stroked and soothed her while I paced around the house crying in the time it takes to bargain, declaim and vent toward some version of coming to terms. In the end it was my decision, and waiting for that was important. He grieved with me. I live on a fixed income so money is a thing. As an aside, I wish you people would talk frankly about the actual costs of the services under review, that's a big part of what we come here for. Anyway, I thought I'd never be able to afford him, based on the accolades he gets, but I look at the invoice and think this must be a typo, seriously. The first visit cost around 340$ - but he spent over 2 hours with us, did a big blood panel and no unnecessary procedures. The remaining visits were on par with what I've paid to take Kami to the torture clinics. I gladly exchanged the cost of travel for the cost of sedation, which is a horrible thing she really didn't have to go through to be examined all her life, despite unending claims to the contrary. If Dr. Bendall can do it, why can't the others? In a city that's lousy with vet clinics only one Dr. Bendall is unbelievable and unsupportable. Expectations rising, Austin. More like him, please. If you're a pet owner that has grown to dread taking your pet to the vet's office or you're looking for a vet who provides a high degree of personal care and compassion, then this review is for you. We have 2 elderly cats (both 16 years old). Over the years visits to the vet have become increasingly stressful (and "eventful") for owner, pets and vet staff. Recently our female (Kendall) started behaving strangely and was having digestive issues, etc. I found myself torn between wanting to seek care for her and the known stress that the visit would cause her (and me). Having no prior knowledge of "house visit" vets I started searching for alternatives to the traditional vet office option. To my surprise I found a couple of options in town. After reading some reviews, I decided to book an appointment with Dr. Bendall. The fact that he allows for web-based appointment scheduling is a big plus for me - it's 2011 and this kind of "feature" should be something every service provider offers. Dr. Bendall arrived at my home, examined my pet and then spent a significant amount of time explaining his observations and recommendations. He also counseled me on proper feeding/nutrition for cats (which after some additional research I found, that like most people, I was woefully misinformed about). After discovering an enlarged thyroid on my cat, he recommended a series of lab tests, including bloodwork. The concept of drawing blood both horrified me and made me laugh. Kendall (the cat) was a notorious "escape artist" that even vaccinations were a major undertaking. Dr. Bendall explained the procedure and much to my surprise we were able to not only draw blood but do it without the cat having meltdown. He provided the lab results the next day (compared to my doctor, where lab results take a week to get) and a prescribed treatment regimen ahead of looking at long term options. After a month of the prescription treatment, Kendall's behavior has returned to normal and most of her "obvious" symptoms have disappeared. We're now moving on to a long term approach and we are very confident of the outlook. Dr. Bendall has been extremely responsive, responding to emails/phone calls promptly and thoroughly. The level of care that he provides with the in house approach is a night and day difference from all my prior veterinarian experiences. I cannot recommend him enough. Dr. Bendall is providing an "old fashioned" house call type service that makes a huge difference to both pet and person. If you are looking for a vet that not only is passionate about what he does but is doing it in an entrepreneurial way that provides great service, then look no further. read more

Look no further for a vet. Matt is amazing. He clearly cares deeply about the animals he cares for and also about their owners. We originally scheduled him to put our beloved dog to sleep. Due to different reasons, he came out twice only to have us change our mind. He was incredibly patient and was willing/able to perform other services so he didn't waste a trip. He did a great job giving our cats their shots which is not an easy task. Once the time came to put our dog to sleep, he was amazing. It was one of the most painful things my wife and I have ever had to do and Matt made it painless for Murphy and not only did he not make us feel weird about our emotions, but we felt like he shared the moment with us. I'm so happy to see that I'm not the only one who thinks Dr. Matt Bendall is amazing. My only regret is that I only just discovered him when I had to make the hard decision of caring for my geriatric dog and eventually deciding on euthanasia for him. Because I was making a hard decision, he spent the time with me easing my mind about all the items I had tried for my pet, and what various outcomes would be to continue treatment. I felt really listened to and the whole time I felt like he was watching and really observing my dog. It really eased my mind and I was able to make my ultimate decision with confidence and the knowledge that I was doing the right thing for the both of us. Before and during the difficult procedure, Dr. Bendall took the time to explain the entire process, and was so gentle and caring for my dog. It literally was the most peaceful and amazing thing to see my dog finally not in pain and relaxed. I'm still grieving, but Dr. Bendall made this so much more bearable. Afterwards, his care continued with a follow up message of condolence and even making the extra effort to have a close friend of mine who is also a client of his check on me. I never thought I'd be writing a review for this service, but here I am. I wondered if Austin had a mobile vet for euthanasia services, and yep, sure enough there was one. Dr. Bendall's name came up, so I read the Yelp reviews, and then went to his site and plugged in my info. In LESS THAN 10 minutes after posting my info I got a call from Jayne who manages the email and computer stuff. I told her that my cat was dying and I was interested in euthanasia services. Jayne was very understanding, listened, asked lots of pertinent questions ... she was very patient with me as this was my first experience with pet loss. Jayne scheduled an appt w/ Dr. Bendall to come out on Saturday which was perfect for me and my cat. And during the week I emailed to cancel the appt. as I had taken my cat to the vet for treatment. Later I learned about a few other serious conditions my cat had and that I would still need Dr. Bendall. Jayne put me back on for an appt and didn't make me feel bad in any way about my indecisiveness. Jayne was very caring and answered ALL my questions; she was both professional and kind. Dr. Bendall came to my house this past Saturday and it was probably one of the saddest days of my life. Dr. Bendall had a calm demeanor, never rushing me in any way. He is a gentle giant with kind eyes -- I can genuinely tell that he is a compassionate fellow. I realize this part of his profession as vital as it is, is still probably the toughest aspect without a doubt. Dr. Bendall listened to what I had to tell him about my kitty w/ out any judgment, but rather understanding. He is a very patient person and a good listener. My husband and I chose to have our kitty put to sleep outside because that's where he liked to be and Dr. Bendall didn't have any problem w/ this -- the weather was great and we have a relatively private back yard. The euthanasia process went very smoothly and he told me what to expect BEFORE he gave the sedation. The hardest part of this process was not who to choose for this, but rather when. I didn't want to be one of those people who regrets euthanizing their pet too late -- this was a very difficult process because this is the first pet I have had until he died. Dr. Bendall was very understanding, caring, calm, informative and kind ... and I highly recommend him if you ever need to put your fur baby to sleep. My husband and I adopted our 60 lb senior dog Roxy late in her life and had the honor of loving her for her last year. The final few months were hardest. She was incontinent, nearly blind from cataracts, and progressively arthritic until she reached immobility. We made many accommodations to keep her happy and comfortable, but when it was time to say goodbye, we were certain. Since she was heavy and immobile, I didn't want to inflict pain on her last day by heaving her to a vet's office. I searched for at-home vets and found Dr. Bendall. Dr. Bendall's demeanor is kind and respectful. He never made us feel rushed or embarrassed for being so emotional. He offered explanations when appropriate and let us set the pace. Saying goodbye to Roxy was one of the hardest things we've ever done, but it went exactly as we hoped it would. We find a lot of comfort in knowing that Roxy's last moments were peaceful, respectful, and happy. It was the perfect way to say goodbye, and we're very grateful to Dr. Bendall for making that possible. I recommend him without hesitation. The stress reduction alone of not having to cart up the pets & haul them whimpering to the vet is good medicine.
