I understand it's a Sunday and it's busy, but there was no reason for the owner to take my chair away from our table while I was in the bathroom for a few minutes WITHOUT asking the two (!!!) other people actively eating at our table if it was okay to take the chair that was in front of the giant half eaten seafood platter. After I confronted the owner I got a half a**ed apology. Our other server was also very busy, and though she was sweet it was very hard to get a hold of her. Outstanding! Under new ownership Pio Pio is the real Peruvian deal: Not only pollo a la brasa, but causas, chaufa, aguadito, palta rellena, tacu tacu... We haven't tried everything yet, but what we have tried we've loved. The chicken is of course very popular, and deservedly so, but my advice is to branch out. You won't be disappointed. The sleeper hit of the menu in my opinion is the aguadito: a huge portion of cilantro-infused soup with chicken, rice and vegetables. It's the best $5.99 meal in Great Falls. Don't forget to add a squeeze of fresh lime (served with it). Among the sides, the green beans are the sleeper hit. They are sautéed with egg. Go figure! read more

I love a good Peruvian Chicken. I don't even need to see a menu usually- 1/4 dark with fried plantains and rice. Pio Pio is relatively new, so we decided to try them for dinner take out. They are set up with a take out table and register outside under their porch, which is great right now. The chicken was just what I expected- great mix of seasoning with nice crispy skin. The fried plantains were perfectly cooked and not overly greasy, and the cilantro lime rice had good flavor. As for the sauces, the yellow sauce was the winner for me- not quite as good as Sardis, but still very good. Glad to have them in the area! read more

Pio Pio is tucked in a cute little plaza I frequent often for cars and coffee. I decided, being Peruvian and all, that I'd give it a shot! Today was the day! We ordered the anticuchos as an appetizer and a whole chicken to test out the waters. We definitely didn't want to dive head first into entrees if their chicken was a no-go. Anticuchos: were moreso on the chewwy side which is definitely a sign that they were cooked far too long on both sides. The rocoto sauce this appetizer came with was delicious! Chicken: Definitely carries and different flavor than your ordinary Super Chicken or Crisp and Juicy, they have a cinnamon-ey hint to theirs that I didn't mind! It was a nice and light seasoning that I knew I wouldn't regret later on in the day. Service was iffy, we were being served by two different people so I was confused as to who would receive the tip. We've tried almost all the nearby restaurants and finally visited Pio Pio this evening with a friend visiting from Maryland. The vibe was perfect for a family or friend weekend gathering. Nice music and good service. Many guests at the restaurant spoke Spanish, so it gave us a very authentic experience. The food was great, we ordered a big trio appetizer with Mahi Mahi to share and each of us ordered an entrée. The 70$ shareable appetizer had big portion, I would say it is good for 3-4 people. Apparently, we ordered more than we can finish. We ordered Tres Leches for dessert and it was nice too. The only down side if I have to say is the food is in general salty. I wish I could say I loved this place-- I was initially really excited to find a Peruvian place in this area, but ended up rather disappointed instead. We ordered the seafood paella and lomo saltado. The seafood in the paella were made from frozen ingredients and did not really have any sense of authenticity or flavor to the dish. It really made the whole dish rather underwhelming. Paying $16 for this dish, I would have expected at least some fresh seafood to be in it. Similarly, the lomo saltado was equally disappointing. The steak was tender, but very bland, and the dish really seemed to be slapped together just for the sake of getting another order out. They offer Peruvian Chicken here as well, which we did not try, but for the prices you pay for the dishes here, you can probably find a better option for Peruvian food in this area. read more

Huge thank you to Pio Pio for stuffing our bellies with such delicious and authentic Peruvian food! Pio Pio is a Peruvian hidden gem located in Great Falls, VA. So glad we got to chat with the owner, Danny. Very friendly staff and most importantly, amazing food prepared with fresh ingredients! [Peruvian Bites] This is a must-try! You can't find this dish anywhere else as it's Danny's unique creation! They are deep fried wontons (dumplings) stuffed with shredded chicken in Aji de Gallina sauce (yellow mustardy sauce). My husband and I loved this appetizer! The chicken was very finely shredded and the sauce was a bit sweet and just a tiny bit spicy. It also comes with a side of extra cream sauce for you to enjoy these crispy wontons. The chicken is so tender that you hardly need to chew and the cream sauce just takes the wontons to another level. [Ceviche] Ceviche is widely eaten in Peru, and it's often enjoyed at the beach! So you can probably imagine​ it's a summery dish. It's raw fish (usually flounder) "cooked" with lime juice, garlic, Peruvian limo pepper, onion, and cilantro. Peruvians say the fish is "cooked" with lime juice because the marinating time takes at least 10-20 minutes to ensure the fish absorbs the citrus juice completely and is cured properly. This was our first time trying ceviche. We love that the fish wasn't fishy and the citrus that exploded on the tongue on our first bite. It's so refreshing. If you've never had raw fish like sashimi or sushi, the ceviche at Pio Pio would be a good start for beginners. [Anticuchos] OK, we wanted to be adventurous, so we had our first grilled beef heart skewer. Honestly, if no one told us that's beef heart, I don't think we'd ever think or question that the meat is an organ. It comes in two skewers together with grilled potatoes and huge Peruvian corn kernels. The beef heart pieces look just like grilled beef. They're thinly sliced and very nicely seasoned. Tender and juicy. We love dipping it in​ the side creamy spicy sauce (it's a mild spicy cream sauce), they complement each other very well. Also love the chewy corn kernels and the mushy grilled potato slices! [Jalea] Jalea is a weekend-only dish. We were so glad we came on a Saturday and got to try this! First of all, the presentation of this dish is beautiful! It's a mountain of deep fried seafood (fish, shrimp, calamari) laid on a bed of yuca, topped with some refreshing lime-marinated slides of red onion, cilantro and corn kernels. A couple pieces of lime and tartar sauce on the side. I miss this already as I'm typing it here... Pio Pio gives you a very generous amount of seafood and their seasoning is done with perfection. We love the extra lime that we could squeeze on top of the fried goodies! [Lomo Saltado (steak)] This Peruvian stir-fry dish is made fresh, serving by serving, never recooked. This typical Peruvian stir-fry is loved by the Peruvian natives... and me! There are​ options for​ chicken, steak, and shrimp. The traditional Lomo Saltado is with steak. It's cooked with slices of red onion, Aji pepper, tomatoes, cilantro, and soy sauce. The ingredients seem simple, but it takes a very high temperature and stir-frying skill to cook the steak right. This juicy beef stir-fry is served on a bed of French fries and a side of rice. It's a very flavorful, hearty, and filling dish! [1/4 Peruvian Charbroiled Chicken] If you have not noticed, Pio Pio's logo has a chicken on it, which means their chicken has got to be legit! It did not disappoint us at all. The chicken was seasoned so well and charbroiled at just the right temperature and time. We only got a quarter piece as we had so many other dishes. It comes with a yellow mustardy sauce and a green jalapeno sauce. If you want some excitement, try it with a little bit of the green spicy sauce! My husband really enjoyed the chicken, especially the slightly burnt chicken skin with the sauces! [Chicha Morada] Purple corn with pineapple juice! We never tried any Peruvian beverage before, so when it first came, I thought it was grape juice! I tasted cinnamon on my first sip, then the ​sweetness of pineapple. They make this juice in​ their kitchen, so it's not store-bought! We saw a lot of families and kids ordering this, so I'm sure this is delicious for the natives as well! [Inka Cola] Never seen this cola before! A yellow-colored soda tastes almost like Mountain Dew/Ginger Ale. It's great and my husband loved it! Both of the beverages went well with our meal! [Area] Pio Pio is located about 8 minutes from the Great Falls Park, so if you're hungry after your hike, definitely stop by this place! Been here multiple times. Normally is very good food and good service as well. I was there this past Sunday and it was perfect. Unfortunately today (09/04/2020) was a miss. Bug in my food. Service was very basic, never asked how food was, didn't come to pre-buss, nothing. It was just a "what do you want" type vibe. Couldn't even get napkins from this server. I am a person who appreciates high quality food and let me tell you, Pio Pio is exactly that. This place is my favorite restaurant of any kind. The attention to detail in everything they cook is phenomenal and seriously refined. I have been here at least a dozen times by now. My favorites are the Tallarines a La Huancaina, Lomo Saltado, and Tallarines Verdes. The cook on their steak is perfection every time and their sauces have incredible flavor. Food was great. Plantain came perfectly with a little moisture and sweetness. My cilantro Lim rice was tasty but my boyfriend's yellow rice was like plain rice. Ceviche is value for money given all the seafood included but I found it is a little strange that it came with 2 giant pieces of carrots and lots of corns. It was so incredibly flavorful and fresh, did not expect it to be so good. Will return for the ceviche. During this long Covid season my husband and I have frequently ordered take out from this establishment and it is consistently fresh and tasty. We recently dined inside and enjoyed this also.
