Yesterday, an issue with my car's battery turned into a problem with the alternator. The car stopped in front of a garage- which quoted almost $700 to fix the alternator. This is leaving out the $85 additional fee to figure out whether it was the alternator- pushed back on that one. Also, I would not get the car before Thanksgiving. I thought the price was a little high and started calling other garages. I've been in Portland for a while and remembered seeing this place - I called them- and they quoted me around $500 and the car would be ready the next day. I left my car there yesterday around 2 pm and it was ready before 11 am the next day. Awesome folks- kind, professional, and quick. And fair pricing respectful of all parties to the transaction... this was a great experience. I tecently went in to the Hawthorne location (without an appointment) to fix a reverse (back-up) light issue on my VW Passat. Other shops wanted to charge me a lot of money just to diagnose the problem! The guys at ABE quickly put my car in the service bay, found the problem and corrected it for a very reasonable fee, and it only took about 45 min. I had to get an electrician to look at my car and I came in pretty late in the day but they still tried their best to fix my car and get it to me before they closed. I really really appreciated it and the fact that they didn't try to drag out time since they are paid by the hour. I called Ken for a battery replacement since my car was having trouble starting and he suggested I walk in and they'll take care of me. I got there, was immediately helped, and turned out that my battery was fine but my cable was corroded. Instead of performing an unnecessary replacement, they just fixed what was needed and charged me much less that I expected. I was out of there in 30 minutes. i hate reviewing places that repair cars. rarely do I ever feel like not being taken advantage of. This place does batteries, starters, alternators, electric work on cars etc. this is their specialty and they know what they are doing. prices are very reasonable since i called around to compare. I am very happy with ABE on Hawthorne. They got our car running for way less than expected. We paid $100 for the diagnostics and it turned out to be an inexpensive part. Mitch was a good communicator and kept in touch. When it turned out to be just the battery cable, he didn't try to milk us for more money. He was working alone that week and said it would take time to get to it. It was towed there on Monday, and it was ready to go to the next shop (for clutch and brake work) on Friday. TL;DR: We have a '07 Dodge Caliber that began having periods of just not starting and finally quit altogether. (Dash lights come on, but engine wouldn't turn over.) Based on check engine codes, we tried some stuff ourselves, but it still wouldn't start. YouTube and repair forums had a dozen reasons it could be so it sat in our driveway for 3 months. We finally had it towed to ABE and they diagnosed it and repaired it for much less than I had expected. And the insurance company paid for the tow, so even less money out of pocket! read more

I went to get my 6way on my F350 switched to a 7 way. Specifically asked for an estimate before hand. Specified the exact amount of money I would be willing to pay. I get a call back there hours later and am told it's 125 for the plug and a hour of labor. This was a 30 min job tops. On top of that I inspect the job and the only wires that are hooked up are the brakes, running lights, and blinkers. No charge wire or break controller signal. So I payed $125 for a 7way, the housing, and for a half ass wiring job. Not impressed. Would not recommend to an enemy. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

My first visit to ABE was pretty simple. Everything went well, but it's likely any reputable shop could have helped me. My second visit to ABE involved a more challenging problem. One shop had declined to get involved once the car was in their possession, and another shop had presented an inaccurate diagnosis without even looking at my car (fortunately, I knew it was wrong, so dodged that bullet). Ken at ABE was just what I was looking for: He didn't claim to immediately know what the problem was, but was interested in taking a shot at it. Said it would take him maybe an hour to map out the components that could be causing my problem, do some troubleshooting, come up with the solution. Sure enough, he called with a confident diagnosis, I authorized repairs, he called when it was complete, and now I'm a happy camper. Strange that I'm leaving a five-star review just because they displayed competence, but after two horrible experiences at other shops, I'm delighted to have a reliable car again. Note: If you want to be pampered, this isn't the place. There's no comfy waiting area to hang out in, it's a bare-bones garage. But it's not a bad neighborhood to be in if you need to kill a couple hours. read more

I will NEVER go anywhere other than AB&E for my car needs. I have been there 2 times and each time I go they are always dedicated to hard work and it shows. No matter the problem they can find it and give appropriate and timely updates so you always know what's going on. I have been relying on ABE for years and have never been disappointed. A short time ago I bought a large battery for an off road rig that didn't seem to be holding a charge. I owned it for about 6 months before I noticed that it was having a problem. When I took it back Mike put a meter on it and discovered it had a bad cell. He replace it no questions asked with another brand new battery. They are always on the ball there and that's what keeps me coming back. read more

The work was done incredibly fast, and they didn't pressure me into buying any unnecessary junk. Came here again yesterday when an unknown problem happened, and although they couldn't fix it, they called a shop who could help me and set me up with them. Nicest and most helpful people around. They completed the car repair quickly. I initially brought it in for an alternator, but another part was damaged instead. I looked up the repair costs online and they were right on target. Alternator bearing(s) were failing in my 1986 Golf. Baxter could not locate a replacement. NAPA said they had one in Portland warehouse. I got it home only to see that it was the wrong unit! NAPA was not sure if they could find the right one. Volkswagen quoted me $383 for a new alternator. (but to buy it I HAD to buy the $20 wiring harness!!) ABE Portland replaced the bearings AND regulator AND brushes AND gave me a new fan belt all for $68. And they got it all done in just a few hours. PHENOMENAL SERVICE!! read more

This place deserves a minus score. I took my car to their Clackamas location for repairs and only made it a couple of miles from their shop before my car quit and required a tow. It was running fine when I took it there and only needed a longer cable, but now it doesn't run at all. A mechanic from another shop said the cables were installed incorrectly. ABE's response when I contacted them: "I'm busy and don't have time for you." Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. Now not only am I out the over $200 I paid them, but I'm out a car. read more
