I have been taking my car to Ali and Naim for more than 20 years, and have always had unmatched service. I have been to several other local shops in Berkeley and Marin and none compare. Several other repair shops charged me exorbitant amounts for small services but it seemed like little of substance was done. I'm usually ushered in and out like I'm on an assembly line. Conversely. I always feel like I get great care - and my car does too at Auto Plus. They communicate well, take their time diagnosing and explaining, and the service and workmanship is great. Furthermore, Ali and Naim tell me exactly what the issues are and what the remedy is. I also love their new location, and happily work on my laptop in the very nice lounge area they have. This is a big plus for me, as it is quiet, clean, and very comfortable. Kind of like being in a cozy room in your own home, and not the auto-repair shop. Once, when they were so busy they could not fit me in for several days, I went somewhere else in Berkeley, also a well known shop, and left having spent $900 plus on things I really didn't need aside from an oil change. I won't stray again as I know this would not happen at Auto Plus. Ali and Naim are very honest, have been in Berkeley for many years, and I know I can trust them when it comes to my car. I have been to other places for my Jetta TDI. Last night I was on the highway and my car was suddenly shuttering and I barely made it home. After calling many places this morning, including a mix of previous places I have been to, this was the only place that was willing to look at my car that day. I called Auto Plus about my Vanagon, which had been sitting for years without being started. They gave me some good advice on the phone, and when I was able to get it started, I brought it by for a check. They were very busy, but Ali and Naim (sp) were willing to take a look at the van. Naim checked the oil, filled the tires, checked the coolant, and told me to drive the car with high octane in the engine before getting it smogged. Then they DIDN'T CHARGE ME ANYTHING! I had a 30k maintenance for my VW Jetta and was putting it off, because my dealership had quoted me an exorbitant amount. After reading many positive Yelp reviews for Auto Plus, I decided to drop in Monday morning. It turned out to be a holiday, but they were open and said they would have my car ready the same day mentioning they would be closing early. Well my phoned died while I was making some runs in nearby Richmond (by bus), so I had not received their call saying my car was ready (around noon). I returned about 2 pm to find they had closed. Once my phone was charged I gave them a call only to get a recording (so I hung up). While I was discouraged to have to wait till the next morning to pick up my car, I was glad to have the work done at such a reasonable price. Well guess what? I got a call back saying that my phone number showed up on their caller I.D., and they would re-open for me if I was close by. I happened to be about a 10 minute walk away, so they said they would wait for me. I was surprised and thrilled by the extra measure they took! The two brothers that run this place, Ali and Ieme (sp?), have been fixing my car satisfactorily for over 7 years now. They've seen me through two Volkswagens (and fortunately less so after I finally bought a new car) and I don't have any major complaints...the minor ones being that their prices went up since I've known them. But that's to be expected after going to a business for many years. They are VERY kind and helpful. When they replace parts, they usually show me the damaged one and explained why they had to replace it. They don't require appointments and on occasion they work on saturdays, but call and ask to be sure. I've never had to bring my car back because they didn't fix something right the first time and I've never felt as if I was being taken advantage of. The brothers are a little shy and soft spoken so they may come across as shifty but worry not. They are hard working and honest. I've only ever seen Ieme working on the cars (Ali does the bookkeeping) and I think he's able to fix about 3-5 a day alone! Impressive. My other minor complaint is that they aren't very good about calling you when your car is fixed and ready to go. Maybe it's because they are busy but I've had better luck with just calling them around 4 or 5 in the afternoon and they will confirm if your car is ready. I can only think of once or twice when they've needed to keep my car over night 'for observation'. But usually, my car is done and ready to go by 6pm with no looking back. They also work on my husband's car which is a Subaru Outback and my friend's Volkswagen. I think they predominately work on European cars but they do all kinds. So give them a try. I would tell you how much their rate per hour but I'm not certain and I don't want to scare away customers. read more

Naim and Ali saved my life as well as others on the road by diagnosing a hard-to-diagnose-and-hard-to-find broken left steering issue, just in time. Naim's expertise and deep understandings of mechanics plus Ali's creative problem solving transformed my 1991 Mazda Miata from a near catastrophic accident waiting to happen to safe driving. No other mechanics (4 mechanics at 2 previous shops) found the issue nor informed me of a need for further diagnostics from experts who could. Naim found a broken bolt resting on top of the steering gear which was supposed to control the steering of the car. Since the 91 Miata parts are hard to access, the two worked together to create a solution safe enough to return the car to driving. If it weren't for Ali and Naim, I literally may not have been able to write this review. They diagnosed a problem, explored the most economical ways to solve the problem, and successfully brought the car up to quality safety standards. They also proactively fixed the loud squeaky door hinge without being asked and without charging me (labor and time would've cost over $150). They have my deepest gratitude and respect and I encourage you to entrust your well-being with Ali and Naim as they have proven themselves to be both technically expert and customer focused with highest safety standards in mind. They're like best-in-class doctors for your car even if you are an ignorant patient. You can trust they are top of their trade and honest businessmen. read more

I have been a satisfied customer for the past 5 years. The two brothers who run this place and honest and they know what they are doing. When I took my car to other mechanics after a car crash, they gave me estimates of around $5000 but in Auto Plus, they repaired every thing in less than $3000. I have recommended them to my family and friends and they are all very happy to finally have a permanent mechanic. Auto Plus is located a block away from El Cerrito Plaza. If you request there is always someone to drop you to the Bart station or you can hang out in the Plaza while they fix your car. read more

Don't take your car here! They claim to "specialize" in Acura and Honda, but the only thing special was the size of my bill and the inferiority of the work. I took my Acura RSX-S in for a tune-up and new brakes. $850 later, the balance was way off (think steering wheel shaking violently) and the wheels make some sort of grating noise when it's cold. Took the car back and the balance was only mostly corrected. It still shakes at higher speeds and the noise is still there. I don't trust them to get it right and will have go to someone else to fix the problem. Save your money and go to a reputable mechanic! read more

This place is horrible. We took our Touareg in to have 2 jobs performed, which we were assured he could do. When we were called to say it was ready we were told 1 job could not be done. Then we went to pay we had to argue because they were still trying to charge for both jobs, afterwards we were eventually discounted well less than 50%. Later we noticed a hole had be drilled into the dash, and that they had broken 2 of our tools The owner claimed he had forgot to tell us and that replacements had been ordered. We tried calling a few times over several weeks with no return calls. Finally, when reached he tried to blame us for being unclear despite instructions being given to him in writing and that he still didn't have the part and could not make the it out of thin air. We went to dealer and they said they could put the part on that he could not (it was an OEM part) and that the other part he ruined would be ordered and arrive in one day. Obviously he had not even attempted to order the parts. He repeatedly lied, blamed others, and over charged. read more
