For diagnostic skill I'm rating these guys pretty low. Here's why: I took my 08 Civic in b/c the A/C wasn't blowing cold. Possible reasons were discussed and fixes were 'ballpark' estimated. Turns out the only thing wrong was that there was no refrigerant in the cooling system, so they did a EVAC ($187) & recharge ($75) and it worked fine - for a couple of hours. So I took it back and then they found a leak in the evaporator core - a major replacement item. While replacing that they felt compelled to also replace the ETR switch ($53) and expansion valve ($63) as precautionary measures plus ($30) shop supply (unspecified). They agreed to not charge me for the 2nd fill of refrigerant since what they initially installed leaked away so I'll give them a 2nd star for that. Bottom line: I paid $300 over what it took to fix what was actually broke; 2 stars seems about right. read more

I admit, it'd been a while since I had gotten an oil change, and as I drove I wondered how long my reminder sticker had been faded... when the maintenance light came on and my snazzy dashboard told me that my oil needed changing. While running errands, I asked a guy at a counter if there was a spot nearby that did oil changes, and he recommended his favorite spot: "It's not in the best part of town, but they're great," he said, and pointed me in the direction of Auto Service Experts. Yeah, the strip mall area of N. Lamar and Rundberg isn't the nicest spot in Austin, but the people here were SUPER friendly. They took care to learn my name and even chatted with me while they were finishing up. Down-to-earth and friendly. The reason I took off a star is that they gave me a time estimate of how long it would take, and it was about 20 minutes over that. read more

After taking my cars to this place for more than 8 years I got to say that the person in the front desk has such a bad customer service, even tho I left my car for more than 4 hours and had to ask for ride twice because no even a heads up with an ETA when he said it should be done in 3 hours at te most PLUS he ordered the wrong parts and still have the nerve to ask me my name whenever they have my information written down with my car! Do not, under any circumstance, use this place. I visited to buy a car battery and have it "installed" (I just didn't have a wrench with me, and I was in a hurry, so I decided to pay whatever nominal "installation fee" was associated with the battery purchase). First, they installed the wrong battery in my vehicle. The battery they installed was far too small and was listed as "not a match" for my vehicle when I looked up the battery on the manufacturer's website. I understand that car batteries can be slightly smaller than the space that is available for them in the engine compartment - so long as they battery is secured. They did not secure the battery and the battery bounced around and fell over while I was driving away. They replaced the battery with a correctly sized battery when I came back, but still charged me over $300 for a car battery that retails for $130 at Advance Auto Parts next door. When I pried further into why the battery cost so much, they said - direct quote - "It's hard to say". I was in a rush and had a bad day and they took advantage of me. I should have been more careful - and that's on me. But I really wish they hadn't have taken advantage of me - you know? You know. Do not make the same mistake I did. Hands down the most honest mechanic in town! I've taken a 2008 BMW 128i to them a 1969 Porsche 912 a 1981 corvette and a 2000 Mazda 626. They each needed problem solving and a little love in their own ways. They can work on anything. I plan on these guys being my new mechanics. They trouble shoot very well and the customer service is unbeatable. Jason is the Owner and I believe he has a partner. Ask for Jason, Or Raul and Brian the guys at the front making it happen. Quick turn around time. Just keep in mind if you drive a classic or something uncommon it may take time for the part to arrive. But once the part arrives they make YOU the priority. I wasn't even sure that my truck got towed to you until contacting the wrecker because I haven't received any contact from you at all. This is a tentative review of your shop, but you cannot promise one thing and then just not contact a customer. I have no idea as to the status of the repair. Update: After never receiving a phone call, I had my truck towed to another shop who had the repair done in 3 hours. Would not recommend based on empty promises and zero contact. read more

I drive a 2007 chevy trailblazer. I know enough about vehicles to correctly diagnose that I had a bad alternator. I went into the shop and spoke with the new owner Jason. He said that since I was stranded they would look at it right away and, if it was the alternator, they could have the work done in about an hour. Got a call back thirty minutes later saying that it was the alternator, no attempt to tell me that there were other repairs necessary. Quoted a very reasonable price of $300. Had my vehicle back and running great with a brand new alternator in the time promised. I would definitely recommend this shop to others. I initially called Auto Service Experts because their location is near a car I intended to buy on Craig's List. After explaining about the car and stated problems, the manager, Kenneth, encouraged me to exercise caution and reconsider the purchase...even though he would have benefitted. Subsequently, I bought a 92 Grand Marquis instead and took it to Auto Service Experts to have it checked and repaired. The car needed lots of work, but they came back with a fair price. They also turned it around quite quickly. Now the car is purring like a panther. I'll definitely be back, even though the shop is located on the other side of town. DO NOT GO HERE! NOT EVEN FOR AN ESTIMATE! I dealt with Kenneth and he said estimates were free. I got my car towed here and he called me back the next day telling me that 6 things needed to be replaced in my car, with a grand total of $1400. I was very well shocked as I told my dad what had happened and he said it should cost around $200-300 range. We towed it to a different place and Kenneth charged me $60 for the diagnostic fee, even though he said the estimate would be free. Yeah, free if I would pay the ridiculous price he's asking. The 2nd auto shop charged us $600. They said if I had taken my car to this place in the first place, it would have costed around $200-$300. Auto Service Experts apparently cracked my radiator so that I would have to get a new one. The only thing I had to have replaced was my radiator but since these guys are so desperate for money, they went ahead and broke my radiator so I would have to get that replaced and get charged more. I had just replaced my radiator a couple months ago so I know how easy and cheap it is to replace by myself. These guys are evil and want to squeeze as much cash from you as possible. After I told him that I was just a student, he still does this to me. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! read more

My mom went in there today and her vehicle got fixed and as soon they pulled off her car to the side she had gotten in the car and her glove compartment box was opened and my mom had some money in an envelope and apparently she checked and was curious why it was opened so she knew that her envelope with money was in there and she was missing 60$. And she came back home and told me that and I know my mom is not a liar my mom is the most humble and nicest person. I called back to the store and I was mad as fuck cause why not right why are you stealing from money that's not yours. So whoever worked on my moms vehicle and stole money from her envelope I hope karma comes back to you one way or another cause that it's fucked up and I know that neither one of the co workers will not admit if they stole it. DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS BUSINESS! I took two vehicles there within one week for different issues (check engine light and needed to pass inspections) from a referral, and was given estimates on what the issues were and needed to be fixed. The day after one vehicle was picked up it did not start. The following day it did, but left my family (with a 5month old baby and 4 year old child) stranded on the side of the highway, with oil leaking. We checked the oil and it was black, dark dark dark. It would not start even after attempting to jump. I tried to all the shop before closing and left a message when no one answered but did receive a call back, informing me that they changed the oil...? Would the oil be black after driving less than 5 miles after it was allegedly changed? We've paid $165 and were told "I told you it had dirty oil and to get rid of it fast" -left with nothing better accomplished than when we walked in the door. DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH YOUR BICYCLE - I have not more money to put into this car and am left without a vehicle for my family. I wish I would have read the review first, and I hope everyone reports them to the BBB. read more

This is the worst auto repair shop I have been to so far. I wanted to change my transmission fluid that day and I went to autoserviceexperts first to ask about the price of the service. The manager told me it's 169 dollars. After consulting two other store, I came back to this store because it's the only store that replace fluid, filter and gasket among the three stores I went to. However, on the first visit, the manager told me they use synthetic fluid because conventional fluid won't make much difference. I stayed there watching while the mechanics was changing my transmission fluid and turned out that they were about to use conventional transmission fluid in my car. After talking to the manager, he ordered the transmission fluid for me and charged me 22 dollars more on the service for the price of synthetic fluid, even though I was thinking didn't you tell me you use synthetic fluid on my first visit just 30 minutes ago. I did not argue with him because my fluid was all leaked out and my car was already on their jack. After a while, the manager told me they charged him 41 dollars more because my filter and gasket come together not separately. I said to him that you told me the filter and gasket will both be replaced, then why it matters if they come together or separately. He then did not say anything. A couple of days later, I went to Auto parts to do some shopping for my car and found out that the Valvoline synthetic transmission fluid is only 6 dollars and something, less than 7 dollars for each quart. However, the manager told me the standard price for transmission fluid is 7 dollars but my synthetic fluid is 14 dollars, that's why he needs to charge me 22 dollars more on the service. In conclusion, the manager Kenneth Ferrer, according to the business card I got from the store, ripped me off by doubling the fluid price and filter and gasket issue. In the end, I paid 197 dollars for the transmission fluid change. He succeeded in over charging me on the fluid price but he failed to over charge me on the filter and gasket did not come together issue. I did research before I went do the transmission fluid change and I knew 169 is already at high price for tranny fluid change but they went even further to charge me 197 dollars.
