I actually found a mechnaic I like! Came in for tires installed, radio issue, and annual inspection. They fixed everything for a really low price (about $75). I also got a great deal on tires from tirerack.com. And even though the guys were really busy they were nice about my adding on the annual inspection while I was there. read more

I love my truck! I mean LLLOOOOVVEEEE my truck! She is just a little ford ranger and nothing very special but I love her the way people love their dogs. Most small repairs (spark plugs, sway bar links, radiator etc.) I do myself, I don't trust shops very much. So when the engine locked up after a snap in the timing belt (which had been replace less then two years ago by a shop I won't mention) I was devastated. I was waiting for the call that she was gonna have to go to scrap heaven. Instead, what I'm sure was hours of uncharged labor and diagnosis, she was fixed! Y'all I was on craigslist looking at new trucks, I cried, I was grumpy at work, I counted her down for the count. I can not tell you how amazing this experience has been. I think you tell a lot about a company about how they handle a warranty repair issue and in this arena, JC Autospec really proved why they deserve so many five star reviews. My son's rather old Buik Roadmaster needed a new a/c system, which they installed before a road trip he took to Dallas and Houston. On his way back from Houston, he got stranded in La Grange when the car would not start. I thought it may be a battery issue, but after various attempts at jumping it, he had the car towed a short distance to a local mechanic (and I drove out there to pick him up.) The La Grange mechanic looked at it and it turned out some clutch on the new a/c compressor had seized. This prevented the main belt from turning and is the reason the car would not start. The next day I spoke to JC Autospec and they had the car towed back to Austin and repaired without any quibble. We discussed whether they plan to get the warranty repair done in Round Rock or by the mechanic in La Grange. Towing it back for JC Autospec to do it, meant we did not have to drive back to La Grange again to pick it up, so they decided to do it that way. We get all our vehicles serviced by them and this experience certainly proved why it is good to stick with a company you can trust to deliver what they promise. Highly, highly recommended. read more

Worth every penny. I've had four different cars serviced here, each for various issues, and the quality of service consistently exceeds my expectations. My latest visit involved a faulty alternator on my '02 Jetta. I talked to Ray on the phone and he gave me a reasonable estimate, based on my description of the symptoms. After I dropped it off, I was contacted a few hours later and given a more accurate diagnosis and estimate. I OK'd the work and a few hours later it was done. I'd give it more starts but I'm only allowed a maximum of 5 starts. I've taken my miata to JC Autospec several times now. One was just for a routine oil change and the other was for a clutch job. Regardless of how small or large the job is, they treat like you're the most important customer. For my clutch job, Dan showed me why it was running like it was and also replaced some wearable items while the transmission was down. They also charged me a fair price and, of course, no surprises. I moved to Austin 8 years ago from Dallas. I actually live just iutside Bastrop. I have had nothing but bad luck with all shops i have visited since moving here. So much so that i would rent a trailer and drag my cars to Dallas to be fixed. About a year ago i got a used Miata and joined the Tejas Miata Group. i had heard many of them rave about Auto-Spec. So when the clutch went out in my car on Monday 4|29 I decided I would give them a shot. I first made a phone call to get some info and some idea on price. I spoke with John who was very nice and knowledgeable. That afternoon I took the car to drop it off and worked with Mike from that point till the job was done. Mike is a absolutely great. Very easy to work with, listened and took care if everything. Also great communication Along the way. Auto-Spec is certainly out of my way and getting my cars there will forever be a pain in my back side, but I think I finally found a shop I can work with. So much so that I took a friend with me when I picked up my car today. He has an old car and has had trouble finding someone that even wanted to work on it. Auto-Spec had no problem saying they would at least take a look and let him know what they thought. all around great shop. Best Experience ! My car was diagnosed with a cracked flexplate. This is a complex job and my car also had considerable amount of Rust inside the engine components to make it even more difficult. Car towed to shop for damage underneath, ran over rock/pavement( Oil leak etc.) 2. After waiting for 1-2 hours, the secretary/receptionist guy in front inspects my car, not by taking it into garage, but walking around it, keep in mind, damage is underneath it, and they know. 3. Starts quoting parts price/service fees, (which i knew were marked up because i looked into the basic parts i needed). when I showed cheaper price parts at Oriellys, $100 less, the receptionist said, "oh okay, we will look into that" and then after talking Oriellys on phone, the receptionist told me the parts at oreillys will take weeks to come. Fine, i find the SAME PART, oil pan, at autozone that they have now, and I try to hand the phone receptionist, he was LIKE, WE DON'T PUT autozone PARTS in car, they have bad parts, again, same PART/brand... only difference, its ready now, so they won't get to put their marked up parts on my car, and had to go with autozone. 4. He puts the keys in front of me and tells me to take it, classic service, so I am like okay, I called triple A, they said sorry, started sending me a new tow truck 5. While waiting, i checked out their yelp, highly rated, some felt fake reviews, so I left my own review. 6. within 15 min, OWNER calls store, asked to kick me out over a YELP REVIEW. again YELP REVIEW. Just a train wreck. Now, lets review Response from Owner (who wasn't even present, nor did they reach out to solve concerns): "I'm very sorry you can't understand how we do business. We only install quality parts. We never order from autozone because they have poor quality parts and we can not warranty that job." Please, mention that on your website that you don't use parts from autozone, the 2nd largest retailer for automotive parts, because they are bad quality. " You are more than welcome to find a shop that will. We are the only AAA recommended shop in Round Rock for a reason. We only do quality work that we warranty for 24months/24k miles." I have found a better shop!, and hopefully you won't be recommend by triple A much longer after this incident. "We are always upfront and honest about everything we do and we stand behind our work." Yes, very honest, since you inspected my car for damages without even taking it into the garage to be inspected by someone qualified. Very honest and upfront. Please, tell me how you can honestly diagnose a car with damage below it without taking it into garage and lifting it. " We do have the right to deny service to unreasonable customers. We are not the only shop in town. Your welcome to take your business elsewhere." A customer that doesn't like your service, and writes a review is an unreasonable customer?! It is unreasonable to want to control the parts that go into their own car?! I am unreasonable because I choose what parts from where I want in the car I own?! "I will not be taking business advice from a "21 yr old kid" who thinks he knows better than people that have years and years of experience." RIPOFF!! Bottom line: These guys misdiagnosed my issue, still charged me $65 for diagnosis, and according to the Nissan dealer, ordered the wrong parts for the job, and way over charged me for the parts and labor. Be warned!! The good: - John is a very down to earth, friendly, easy to talk to guy. - They will pick u up and drop u off if needed. The ugly story: I told them what was wrong with the car and what needed to be done. They disagreed with me. They then spent an hour mis-diagnosing it. Finally the tech came back into the showroom and said "I think you're right". I said "take the ECU out and look at it. I bet it's fried". 5 min later he had it out. He walked in the back room to show John first, then walked up to counter. Sure enough, a part on the ECU went bad. I was right. John said they'd credit me back the $65 diagnostic. But Mike never did credit it back to me. They ordered 2 sensors needed to have replaced. John said "we get these OEM parts super cheap! Guy we buy them from just puts the actual OEM bagged part into his own bag and sells it at great discount. I trusted that. I got screwed. They charged me $546 for parts. Dealer said I could have purchased them from Nissan for $340. Auto-Spec also charged me high labor cost. They charged me $261.00 labor to replace 2 sensors and the ECU. My local shop said that is a very easy job that they would have charged $100. I wish I had purchased the OEM parts from the dealer and had my local mechanic install them. The other area that I trusted these guys on was the actual knowledge of the parts. The dealer said it was silly to buy those sensors individually, since u can purchase the whole throttle body for $350 less and it includes both sensors and is even easier to replace, and u get $40 rebate back from the old throttle body core. Dealer said "most any basic mechanic knows that". Well, these guys didn't. Mike was the guy that charged me such high prices. I don't know if he makes a commission off the sale, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. I called them and explained that I could have saved $350 by purchasing the throttle body at the dealer and having my local shop installing the ECU and throttle body. Mike's response: "U didn't complain when I quoted u the initial price. It's too late now. I can't go back and change it after the fact." Well, that's pretty crappy. I trusted that y'all knew what u were doing, that u wouldn't charge me more than dealer prices, and assumed u understood the basic parts diagram enough to purchase a throttle body if needed as the dealer said "most any mechanic knows to do that". I was charged at least $250 more than what the dealer would have charged, and that was assuming I had changed both sensors individually! If I had the throttle body changed, which the dealer said "most any mechanic knows changing the throttle body is cheaper and easier", then I would have saved $350 by purchasing it from the Nissan dealer!!! Yes, dealer price was $350 cheaper! And that's just the parts. They also charged me "on the very high-end" for labor, according to the dealer. I never got ripped off that bad. I've never paid more than dealer price at a non-dealer shop. These guys seem professional on the front-end, and were pleasant to deal with on the front-end, but they charge very high prices, and not willing to make it right. I called back again today, talked with Mike, and asked if he can simply match the dealer price. He said no. Best he'll do is give me a $100 gift certificate to his shop for future business. That's insulting. So be careful with these guys. Check the prices for labor and parts BEFORE u give your credit card over to Mike!!!! I would not trust them again. It pains me to give them one star, but their driver was very pleasant, and Ray, who also works the front desk seems like a good guy. So one star is well deserved for that! If u must deal with them, maybe ask for Ray and not Mike. U might have a better experience. read more

So once again, J&C auto specialist do the right thing. Brought in my Lexus GX 470 after the air suspension went out. Had to keep the car in the shop over the weekend due to last minute. Anyway they fiddled with it, and were able to fix the problem, a relay going bad or short. The point is, is that they could have told me i needed a new compressor, , or liner bag, and i would've gone along with it, but they didn't. Another great save!!!! read more

Finally a shop you can trust. I've found that you can learn a lot about a shop when you are sitting in the waiting area. I've been to Auto-Spec twice recently and both times I waited while the work was being done and overheard many customer and internal conversations. If you've ever done this at other places you hear sarcastic comments made about customers after they hang up or walk out or you will hear a manager reminding everybody to push services that were not needed. One oil change place was having a competition to see who could sell the most air filters changes. This place is the complete opposite. The conversations were always customer centered and geared towards making sure the work was done properly and at a reasonable cost. One time in particular a mechanic came in from the shop and gave the front desk person some bad news about a vehicle. They talked at length to make sure there wasn't a cheaper fix for the problem before the mechanic went back to the shop. The front desk person picked up the phone and I assumed he was calling the customer, but instead he called another of their mechanics who had the day off. They discussed a bunch of technical stuff that I know nothing about for 8-10 minutes before finally calling to give the customer the bad news. That call was handled professionally and the customer seemed to have known from the beginning what the problem likely was and agreed to the cost for the repair. Even after that, though, he and the other mechanics continued to discuss options to reduce the cost. I don't know if they ever came up with anything, but they clearly cared. read more

another happy customer! i asked around and got the recommendation to go here (my honda had the hiccups... turns out it was a really clogged fuel injector), but i was hesitant because it was way up there in south dallas... er round rock. so i went to the website, poked around a bit and was pleasantly surprised to find that they have car service that will both take you back to home or work, and pick you up when your car is ready. so i requested an appointment... i got an email back from dan almost immediately with a couple more questions about the symptoms. i mailed him back and set up the appointment. after they got under the hood, they found out just what sort of abusive relationship i have had with my poor honda and brian from the shop called a) to let me know that they had finished the job i had asked them to do and b) make some recommendations, some more immediate in nature than others. he explained exactly what needed to be done and why, and how much each would cost, in order of urgency. i never felt like he was trying to talk me into something i didn't need, nor was he condescending in the way that so many in the industry seem to speak to women. (ask me sometime about when i was shopping for a new vehicle and how many friggin cupholders and vanity mirrors i was shown... i've written a short screenplay that will make millions when other annoyed and frustrated women flock to the theatres to see the film starring janeane garofalo as me...) anyway, all repairs and suggestions were taken into account, and i did end up spending a chunck of change, but after doing some shopping around, i feel pretty good about the value, and would definitely recommend these guys. read more

I recently purchased an '02 Miata that had a few more issues than I could handle myself, and after asking around on enthusiast forums, I chose Auto-Spec based on their reputation specifically for fixing Miatas. I was not disappointed. The service I received was totally worth the drive up to Round Rock from Central Austin. They even have a key drop, so I was able to drop it off in the evening! What really sold me was the amount of communication Ray provided. He was completely up front about what their diagnosis uncovered, and what other potential issues might come up (and how much they would cost) once they started working. I seem to have lucked out with a best-case scenario, but the level of communication and honesty would warrant a 5-star review either way. read more

JC Auto ordered me a new roof (one week), worked with me to set up a good time (!!!) and even drove me all the way down to Austin while they installed (it takes all day to put on a new roof). The price was fair, and the shop is immaculate. If you need a new Miata roof, go here. One star off for being sooooo far North. [sidenote: if you do get a new roof, they're not kidding about them being "taut" when new. I had to drive over to my friends house so he could help me put it back up after I'd taken it down, then left it down for 4 days. Don't leave it down til it's settled in!) read more

I've had cars and service experiences for over 20 years, but it wasn't until I found JC's that I found a place that I felt comfortable handing over keys and giving them carte blanche to do what absolutely needs to be done and to inform me about the rest. They've never tried to upsell me something I didnt' need, never speak down to me (as a woman, this happens more than guys realize), are upfront about telling me what needs to happen now versus later, and always present me with a bill that surprises me... in the good way. They are knowledgeable and competent at repairing and maintaining everything from the most ordinary car to the complicated modified sports cars and don't hesitate to research and ask questions if they don't know the resolution to an issue. I stopped in to check the place out close to closing time 5:15 pm Thursday. Frankly, I don't see why ppl say they're friendly. When someone finally acknowledged me, I was told to drop it off tomorrow & I would HAVE to leave it there. What? I was told I could get a ride home via shuttle, but I didn't like that that was my ONLY option. Last thing I want is for my van to sit all day for nothing. I like to stay and see what they are doing. The fans stopped working, that cool the radiator, and so I hate to drive it. I asked if I could leave it now, and get a ride, two miles away. It was 5:15, so he said no. I asked how much to diagnose, and he said $65. Wow. Too high just to diagnose, and I couldn't allow myself to be treated so...carelessly. Guess they got all the business they need...I am unsure what to rate them, so 50/50 seems fairer than how I was treated. read more

I was going back to take my beater in for a strut change using my parts, but they wanted more for labor than the car was worth, lol. I had a roadtrip from Austin to Vermont I was gearing up for (that I was doing alone) and I had taken my car to a few garages to get estimates on what needed to be done before the big trip. I had estimates ranging from $200-$900. What a difference in parts and labor! I decided todrive 20 miles to have JC Automotive settle everything. I had used them for over 3 years before moving out of town, and knew they'd steer me in the right direction. And that they did and I'm glad I had them work on my car. They have excellent customer service and have a really clean waiting area. There is a TV, super fast wireless internet and about a million magazines to look at. They have coffee available and they will shuttle you pretty much anywhere in the area. They do NOT take appointments here, so everything is first come first serve. That is awesome, BUT be aware that they are one busy place (and that's a good thing!!!). Brought my truck in because the heater was not blowing hot air. We made it through last winter without it, but didn't want to do that again this year. I figured it was just air bubbles in the cooling system that I wasn't able to remove on my own. The mechanic spent a few hours with it, trying to remove the air with their airlift system. They found a small crack at the end of my overflow hose, so they trimmed the end off and tried to remove the air from the system once again. It was later determined that the heater control valve was bad. The part had to be ordered from the dealership, so I decided to take care of it on my own. Total cost for the 2.5 hours of work: $52 with tax. They only charged me for the diagnostic fee. I couldn't believe it! They found the problem, found and fixed a small leak, and spent a lot of time on my vehicle. I was expecting to pay at least $100. I will be returning to this shop with both of my vehicles for all of my maintenance needs. Also, their diagnostic was correct! I ordered a new heater control valve and installed it myself. The heater works great now and the wife is very happy! read more

They communicate well and their information is honest and accurate so I have no surprises when the work starts. Recently I purchased a used truck and asked the owner to take the truck to this shop for a pre purchase inspection. A couple of items were found and the owners paid to have the repairs completed. After the truck came out the owner told that she liked the people so much that they were now her new auto mechanic shop. First of all, this is just a little garage that nobody's ever heard of, yet they have 5x as many reviews as national chains? Think about it. Second, just take your car there and see for yourself. This place is a catastrophe, to a point of being cliché. Bad diagnosis, ignorant employees that don't care about anything, mechanics that lie about everything, sky high prices. And that was just for me to get an ESTIMATE. For whatever reason, if you should decide to take your car to this "business," PLEASE, make sure to get a LINE ITEM quote on paper, so you can see why their prices are nearly double, compared to everywhere else. Then ask them why they have a 30%+ markup over dealership prices on their parts. Ask them what those little $48 and $125 charges here and there are for. Ask them what the "extra fees" section means. I don't understand why this place has such good reviews. I went here specifically because people were touting how great it was. My experience was less then steller. I dropped my car off overnight on the key drop place since I got of work late. They told be before that they have it done the next day. next day came and no one called me to confirm they have my car or they were working on it. NOTHIGN. I called at noon to make sure they did in fact have my car, and that my car wasn't jacked or anything since I left it outside on their lot. They guy (Ray) said they will look at it and get back to me soon. I called at 3pm and Ray said they were typing up the report. I called at 5pm and Ray said they were typing up the report. This was a bunch of BS. they haven't even looked at my car yet. I told them I was coming to pick up my car since I had to have it next day, I suspect they started looking at my car then. They got one star because they did fix the oil leak. However, I tried to use a $15 coupon on their website. Ray said, "I gave you a discount on your price already, use it next time". I was thinking, why they heck would I give you the coupon beforehand so you can just jack up the price and take a discount???? I also heard another rep told his customer that he gave them a HUGE discount on his price. If you were stupid enough, then you'll believe them. They just say that to make you believe you got a great deal. I also got a compressive vehicle inspection ($99). They found several things wrong with the car. Ray only gave me a quote for the labor, but not the parts. He said he would give me the quote the next day. Well it's been 2 weeks and I haven't heard from them. Long story short, save yourself the trouble of going here. The reviews are overrated. read more
