Seriously. Just go here. I got a quote from a shop down the street with a really good reputation, and it was for $4000 worth of work (on my car that's worth about $5000). I was considering selling my car, and my father convinced me to take it to Auto Stop and just see how much the work would be. They suggested swapping out a part on my car that would make repairs cheaper in the future, and make the car faster *awesome*, plus they talked with me a lot about the huge amount of work that the other shop recommended, and mostly they said it doesn't need to be done, or can be done in a few months. The guys were so nice. On time. Good price. Go there now! Update January 2013: I have been in and out of Auto Stop probably 3 or 4 times since writing this originally. My car is crap. But Auto Stop has been amazing every time, saving me money where possible and doing repairs way faster than they promised! read more

I was having some trouble with my car and found Auto Stop, based on yelp reviews. Tom (the owner) was careful to not change anything that wasn't necessary - I suggested spark plugs and air filters, and I'm sure ANY other mechanic would have gladly changed them and charged me for it. Tom, however, said that these were fine. He eventually tried something else (I can't remember what it was), and it seemed to have worked. Fast forward a week, and I was *still* having the same trouble, so Tom had me drop it off for several days and let me use a loaner. He was never able to recreate the problem, but after looking at / working on my car for several days, he didn't charge me another dime. I also appreciated receiving a "thank you" card from Auto Stop. Truly a classy business, who is looking for long-term customers and not just looking to make a buck. read more

I consider it one of my life's greatest achievements that I have found a trustworthy mechanic. I may flit around to different hairdressers, manicurists, dry cleaners and shoe repairmen, but I ALWAYS bring my car to Auto Stop. I found them through a mutual friend of the owner, Tom, and they are more honest, reliable and accommodating than any repair shop I have ever dealt with. On my first visit, Auto Stop quoted me a price more than $400 less than another local establishment to repair my car and get it ready to pass VA inspection. They also recommended other service, but were up front that I didn't need to do that work at that time. Since then, I have brought the car in for oil changes, check ups, and "what's that noise" visits -- if something is nothing, or not worth fixing (on my 2000 Hyundai Accent), they tell me, straight up. I can always get an appointment within a couple days, and the mechanics are friendly and courteous. Auto Stop is a remarkably good shop. read more

I had a recent situation with my SUV that turned out to be something much bigger then initially anticipated and required me to make several return visits (not the fault of Auto Stop). After my first visit Richard, the shop Manager, reached out to me directly to ensure that I was well taken care of, and stopped at nothing to make sure they resolved all issues within their power and communicated options to me in detail throughout the process. I know absolutely nothing about cars. I am satisfied that I can put gas in it, turn it on, successfully get from point A to point B, turn it off. I also can open the trunk! This probably sounds ridiculous, but its true. My dad is truly ashamed. SO, when it occurred to me that my Mazda3 had hit the 30,000 mile mark, I figured I should bring it in to get it checked. Not wanted to be taken advantage of, I did my research and settled on Auto Stop. This was the correct choice. Bottom Line: They did a complete check, told me everything was A-OK, and didn't charge me a cent. Nothing. They also gave me a ride to/from the metro (Pentagon City) and it was easy to schedule the appointment over the phone. I will note that it is a bit hidden and you can easily drive by it (I did) - so go slow! It's very unassuming - I'd check on Google Maps street view before you go. I've only been here for an oil change but my car was definitely running better after the oil change since I was a few hundred miles overdue. What is important to note is that they only charge about $65-$75 for a synthetic oil change. The place I used to go to on Fayette Street (Automotive Service Garage) charged $120 for a synthetic oil change - that is the same amount that Lindsay Lexus charges! If you need a synthetic oil change, do yourself a favor and come here! They also told me about some problems that I had but didn't push it on me. They told me how much it would cost and said I'd totally be find to wait and fix it on my next oil change which I thought was cool. Seem like honest, friendly folks. P.S. After Yelp'ing for a mechanic, I found this place. I have mixed reviews, but mostly positive. Pros = They were able to get me in the day I called, and like everyone else, I love the fact that they can give me a ride to the Pentagon City metro. And I totally forgot there's a huge mall there; what better way to waste time waiting for them to finish my car than browsing stores? They were also able to get in two new tires that day, and I was happy the man at the front desk called to let me know that. For the most part, they have great customer service. Also, after my tires were put in, I told the man at the desk that I had been having issues with buying new back tires every couple of years (not normal). He took a look at my car, and pointed out that the back wheels of my car seriously need an alignment. I like that he explained everything to me in a non-condescending way, which was refreshing. Cons = I had to call a couple of times to find out when they were picking me up from Pentagon City, so that was a bit of a pain, considering I was on a tight schedule that day. read more

The customer service here is great. Everyone was so nice and they keep you informed about how much longer you should expect to wait. A woman I met in the office told me she had been going there for 9 years and loves it. I waited for just over an hour for them to change my battery, check some of my belts, and do an oil change, which I found to be quite reasonable. I don't know anything about cars, but I trust mine to them without hesitation. They have take car of my Audi A3 since last. They have performed two annual maintinace and their price is reasonable and my car is in mint condition, like new. I took my girlfriend car (beetle 2003) a couple of days ago and they changed the suspension, a front light and the car is running pretty nice. This place is fine if you know exactly what's wrong with your car and you specifically want a quote to get it fixed. They do a decent job and are pretty nice, but like your primary care physician, your garage should really be looking out for the general health of your car, and not just when it has a cold. Our old car had been making funny noises and sounding overall like it was entering the limp of death. I was concerned that there was something wrong, but the boy insisted that it just had inspection (by Tom's) and had been fixed (by Tom's) several times in the near past, so if there was anything majorly wrong with it, then they would have told us. Well... he was wrong. After a couple months of driving around feeling like the car was going to shake itself to pieces, I took it to another garage. And lo and behold, this garage came back with a list 10 items deep of things that were wrong with the car (some quite seriously), and quite honestly said to us, dude, it's time to buy a new car. I'm disappointed that Tom's didn't point out some of these issues to us before because they were things that would've been evident simply from fixing some of the other issues that the car had. I think they're a bit of a victim of their own success on yelp and the web in that their business has increased and so their attention to detail has slipped some. That said, they're very nice and accomodating, and prices are commensurate with other garages. If you're local and know what you want done, this place will do. But if you're looking for a place that's watching out for the long term health of your car, I would keep looking. read more

Look closely b/c the building is a little further from the main roads than the others beside it. Many reasons why I'm going back: * Timely * Prices Sensitive * Genuinely Honest (yes, I'm repeating myself...) * Long-term business focus- they're all about repeat business I got my car inspected there. It was fast and cheaper than what I called around for. He told me an hour wait on the phone, but I was there for half an hour tops. (I appreciate the overestimation vs. the shops that say "it'll just be 15 minutes" and I'm there for an hour...) I chatted with Tom, the owner. It was nice to talk with a person who takes pride in his business and his reputation. $60 for an oil change? Fine! I guess... Superfluous background info: I usually do my own oil changes but I was desperate - work schedule was annoyingly demanding and my tools are back in NJ. The staff were nice and agreed to use synthetic oil upon request. They have wi-fi so I was able to entertain myself in the lobby with my laptop and enjoy complimentary drinks (coffee, bottled water, soda cans, etc.). In the past, I've paid much less back home in Jersey City but I didn't have the extra amenities just mentioned. Does wi-fi and hydration equal $20-30 extra? Maybe not but it's nice to have. Sometimes auto service/care is where you don't necessarily want to scrimp. I went one time and, if caught in the same predicament where I absolutely cannot do my own oil change and stuck in the NOVA area, I will most likely come back. WARNING!: It is very easy to drive past so keep your eyes open. read more

When I first moved to the DC area and had to find a new mechanic/auto shop I was extremely wary. You always hear horror stories about being ripped off by mechanics and I figured in a commuter city it would be near impossible to find a good place to get my car looked at. After checking reviews on Yelp, though (and because I was at the DMV nearby getting my license) I decided to stop in and meet the guys at AutoStop and I'm glad I did. Everyone here is extremely helpful and knowledgeable and they don't charge you if they take a look at your car and there's nothing wrong, which is a HUGE place. Personally, I'd rather be safe than sorry and not having to pay every time someone opens my hood really helps there. If you're driving here for the first time, be aware that it can be kind of hard to pick out. It's in a row of brick loft buildings that all look kind of similar and doesn't have a super obvious sign. If you're metroing (because you have to leave your car there) they'll give you a ride to the Pentagon City metro for free and pick you up when you come back. Also, three cheers for online appointment scheduling! The one downside, which is why I'm only giving them 4 stars instead of 5 is the price. They're about on par with most other mechanics, which is to say quite expensive and I think I paid slightly above average last time I was in the office and had to get a major repair done, but for the quality of service and the relatively quick turnaround, it's worth it. read more

Update: I had a serious problem with my car battery. I went to this place, as it was my primary auto shop. I walked in after an early morning call and they quoted me $85 above the dealer for a job they need to do tomorrow. When I asked about the price discrepancy, it was explained that the new battery I'm to get is for "new cars" because this battery uses fused glass instead of battery acid. Okay, I asked, but why am I getting a new version of the battery for my car, when my car is old? I received a side-stepped answer, non-direct answer. I don't know, something really really felt wrong. So I decided to not use this. I've only had minor car problems and this place is good. But I've now changed my overall rating to 3 stars. read more

I never feel very comfortable going to a mechanic shop because I always wonder if they are selling me something that I don't necessarily need. I know very little about cars. I took my car in because of the yelp reviews and because it's near my house. They fixed my car very quickly and told me of other repairs that I could get done at a later date. I really liked that they didn't say I needed to get it done now and at their shop. Unfortunately, my problem wasn't 100% fixed because they replaced a damaged part on my car but another part had actually caused the initial damage, not wear and tear like they had initially believed. I took it back worried that they would tell me I had to pay more etc. In reality, they said that it was their fault they hadn't notice the problem in the first place, replaced two new parts for free (including new rear breaks because they were damaged during the repairs). They made my car a priority and offered me a loaner car while they were fixing it. I was floored. They could have sold me anything and I would have believed/paid them. The shop normally closes at 3pm on Saturdays but they were still there working past 5pm. They were even open on Sunday to finish up other cars. I DEFINITELY recommend them! read more

My drivers side windshield wiper was no working, every light imaginable was on, and my car was squeaking loudly. When I called to make an appt., they were very friendly and helpful. I had no idea how long or how much it would cost. Turns out they fix windshield wiper for free cause it was a loose screw and all I needed was new brake pads. Had serpentine belt replaced a year ago. Around August my belts began to squeal and got much louder as time passed so I took I back today. Thought it was my tensioner, AC, or power steering pulley. They took a look and found that my belt just needed adjusting. Cost me $25 saving my hundreds. These guys are great. I'll go here as long as live in DC area!!! read more

I took my car in for an oil change and tire rotation, after the usual car place I was going to tried to empty my bank account for no reason last spring. Auto stop was friendly from check in to check out, they did an entire review of my car and sent me the detailed analysis with price estimates of everything, allowing me to decide if and what beyond the oil change I wanted to have completed. I never once felt pressured to have any extra services completed nor did I feel like the prices where unreasonable for any of the services. I will be back! read more

This place is amazing. I'm so glad that my first review is going to them. I took my 2007 Altima in because the brake light was on and squeaked when I stopped and I needed my tire pressure sensor reset because it wouldn't go off. For the tire sensor, I had hit a curb and knocked the tire cover into the wheel well, right where the valve (and the sensor) are. Mike told me that they would check it out, but the slightest bump usually does the sensor in. I was just hoping that it wouldn't be too expensive. Later, I came to pick my car up, all I needed was brake fluid! They even told me that my pads were still fine and I had thousands of miles to go before even thinking of a brake job. I didn't even think of that because I had just gotten an oil change at (some OTHER establishment who shall not be named). and my tire pressure was uniform, but low, so they fixed that up. For FREE! yay!! Next day, the tire light was still on, so I bought it back in and they reset it for me, free again! I am so glad I found this place. Tom and his staff are so nice and they don't try to sell you services don't need. read more

Yelp steered me wrong on this one. I was new to the area and was looking for a place to get oil changes and the occasional tune-up. I found that Auto Stop had WONDERFUL reviews on this place. I was pleased with my first visit. The oil change was pricier than some places, but the service was great, and everybody was very friendly. On my second visit to get an oil change, I was given a laundry list of things that needed to be done on the car, totaling around $2,000. One of the things they said was that my spark plugs had never been changed (though I had changed them several months earlier, and had the paperwork to prove it). Since I was skeptical, I went to a family friend, who happened to be a mechanic. He said that less than half of the stuff needed to be done, and we could easily do it ourselves. We got parts, and did the work ourselves for $150. I went to a different mechanic after we did the work, and he said that everything looked great. I don't know what happened during this visit, but I was surprised that a company with such great reviews would miss the mark by such a long shot. read more

I live in the Shirlington area and am moving closer to route 50 soon. I had been driving to Yates in Delray for the last several years. They've been great, except for the last year or so. I just don't think their service is good enough to drive the extra distance anymore. Although I will miss the free car wash. That's why I choose to give these guys a shot. I called around 2pm on a Wednesday to schedule an oil change. Ben answered and was very easy to talk to. He was able to get me in for a 3pm appointment. I got the oil change and they also noticed that my brake fluid and air cabin filter were filthy and overdue for service. They completed all the work and I was back on the road by 5:30. My car has a lot of performance parts installed, and I still go to a performance shop for serious repairs/improvements (NGP in Lorton... also highly recommend). But, this shop should do great for all the other services I need done. read more
