I went here with a groupon for half off emissions/safety inspection. They were extremely busy, but suggested I come back a few hours later and might have better luck. I came back 3 hours later, and one of the mechanics was able to take me right away, despite the shop still being very busy. They performed the safety inspection quickly, but the emissions was incomplete (due to a battery issue). I took the car back a week later early on a saturday after performing an exhaustive drive-cycle on my car (mechanic's recommendation) so that the car would be ready to pass the emissions's test. I found this place via a Groupon for vehicle and emissions inspection and I couldn't be more thankful. All of the guys are very helpful and super friendly. Manny is pretty much the go-to guy, however, all of the gentlemen that work in the shop are great and will help you. Chris worked on my car and was awesome! He was thorough, yet quick with the work. He explained how changing a particular part on my car wasn't crucial, but another part of the vehicle was and it had been overlooked by a larger chain that I had just visited the day before. Manny was able to promptly locate the part and Chris got the job done. These guys saved me money, time and unnecessary work that was strongly suggested by a larger chain. I've been here a few times and honestly come back because of Manny. I'm a female and try to do my research on quotes before picking a mechanic since I don't have a handy man in my life for those sorts of things and each time Manny quotes me far less for repairs in comparison to other dealerships and local mechanics. I've had belts replaced here, oil changes, inspections, front brakes etc. I have a Toyota Yaris and I recently came when I was told by Eurasian (my car got towed there) that I needed my rear brakes replaced asap and they quoted me $440. The guy even said he was shocked that I don't see sparks yet. I came to Automotive Express and Manny told me they just needed cleaning, not replacing and if anything it was my front brakes that were wearing down. I asked him to replace the front (rotors/pads), clean the rear, and do my annual inspection and oil change. For everything I paid less than that $440 quote that Eurasian gave me on one repair. I definitely appreciate this auto-shop and have come to a place where I no longer feel the need to look around for the best deal. The best deal has always been at Automotive Express. PLEASE READ: I brought my 13' Corolla with 40K miles for new inspection sticker and left my car there. A few days later, I realized they had changed my NEW tires with OLD tires. Came here with a Groupon deal a few months ago. They failed my car because of the slightly-worn-out brake rotors. I decided to go to my reliable mechanic, Skyline Auto Service, to replace them at $80 less. It looks like the manager here, Manuel, treated customers who use Groupon terribly by failing the emission/inspection in order for them to get an auto service done there. Honest. Accommodating. Pleasant. Professional. Fair. Not words you often associate with mechanics and auto shops. I love this place. My dad was a mechanic and I searched forever to find a reliable shop to bring my car. I have been going here for over a year and because all the other reviews are so great, I didn't bother adding another to the pile. But, today, I was in the middle of Saturday errands, and heard something wrong when starting my car in a parking lot and thought - whoa, once you shut off the engine, the car won't start again. Call it mechanic's daughter's intuition. Without an appointment, AT NOON ON A SATURDAY, I drove into the shop, hunted down my favorite mechanic there, who stopped the task at hand and walked over to my car and said "okay, then shut off your car" and I did, and then it wouldn't start - until the starter was manually hit.. and then we knew I needed a new starter. Manny had come over, heard everything and without a word, ordered the starter, and in about an hour and a half - all better. That kind of customer care and service is so exceptional and incredible, I have to add my glowing review to the mix, needed or not. Rudy runs an incredible shop and Chris (a.k.a. Erica) reminds me of my dad's genius with cars when it comes to troubleshooting and problem solving. Great place for car repairs. We've been going there for at least 4 years now. They quickly diagnosed a few critical things our Hyundai dealer completely missed when we took it to the dealership first. The dealer tried to say they couldn't find anything wrong and didn't know why the engine was overheating - the team at Automotive Express noticed within a few minutes that the electrical connector for the radiator fan was completely fried. Not sure how the dealership missed such an obvious thing to check, not to mention it's plainly visible. AE has always been honest about what needs to be repaired and what can wait, they're very quick, and I've never felt like they're trying to cheat me. read more

They were open when gov't offices were closed even though the snow was all over the place. They did what they could to get a passage for people and cars into their shop. This review is based only on three things: the friendliness of the staff, efficiency, and the emissions test. I came here after getting a Groupon for half off the VA emissions test. They are located down Oakland street off of Four Mile Run Drive (go east on Four Mile Run Drive, make a right on Oakland, it will be on your right). They were quick, efficient and very appreciative of me buying the Groupon. I have never met a more friendly mechanic. I noticed on the wall that a regular synthetic oil change is $32.50, which includes tire rotation. I guess I shall come back here when I am ready for that as that is quite cheap. read more

Both the tire place and the mechanic are the best I have ever been to. Every time I walk out from an oil change and they tell me that there is nothing else wrong with my car, I have to ask them to repeat themselves to be sure. Every other place has a list at least $600 long of items needing to be repaired. And when something does need to be fixed (e.g., to pass inspection), their repairs are the cheapest I've found with a quick turnaround. Very professional and friendly. Wow! Automotive Express is honest, friendly, and doesn't overcharge. The manager, Rafael, is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He always listens carefully to you and treats you with respect. He spends a lot time with you, inspects everything and is truly concerned with your satisfaction. When I went to get a tire, he didn't try to sell me the most expensive ones. He gave me a lot of options and actually recommended the economy tire for my needs. I don't think that has ever happened to me when working with a mechanic. He really looks out for you and takes care of you. An example of his level of service: I had my tires mounted and paid for all the work. I was backing out of his business and he noticed three of my lights were out. He stopped me, dropped everything, got three bulbs, and immediately replaced them. NO CHARGE! He didn't have to do that, but he did it anyway. I would have never known he had seen the lights were out. Or, he could have just told me and sent me on my way. Or, he could have charged me for labor and the bulbs. I was shaking my head all the way home. I just couldn't believe how amazing he was to me and how impressed I was with his staff of workers. They are so fast, friendly, and do quality work. If you need tires, rims, or really any car work, you could crazy not to go to Automotive Express. It was easily the best experience I've ever had with a mechanic/shop. Very surprised that I had to scroll down the page to see Manny's name. Sorry, it has taken this long to give you a great review (if you are reading this, Manny). I came to Automotive Express about two years ago with my beat up 2002 Mustang. He took a look at it and called me back with an estimate and what needed to be done. This was the first time I was about to do business with him; It wasn't cheap, so of course I went to two more places to get other estimates. Both places were way over Manny's estimate and one had even said there were more issues that 'needed' to be fixed. Less than a year later, I ran into another issue. Of course, I took it to Manny to have him look at it.. this time the repair would be more than what I thought the car was worth. Manny gave me time to make a decision and gave me some solid advice. Sadly, I decided to trade the car in and get a new one. The only regret I have is that I now have a new car that repairs are covered and everything is done at the dealership, if only Manny and the other workers were there! Hate to be losing someone I trust with my car, but if anyone I know ever runs into a problem, I know where to send them. Manny is very trustworthy, and not a b.s.-er like I know most people are in this industry. Someone who looks at my car repeatedly -no charge- with no guarantee I will even have him do the job and who finds ways to make the repair as cheap as he can get it for me, is awesome. -- can't find too many of those these days! read more

I originally went here after I purchased groupon for inspection and emissions testing a couple years ago. Since then, I have had good experiences going here for regular oil changes, inspections, & maintenance. I really trust Rudy and I appreciate his honestly. It can be difficult for women to go to a car shop/ dealership. I find it intimidating at times. However, Rudy and the others I've encountered here speak to me respectfully and really give me what they think is the best advice. I don't think they will recommend services you don't need (like the dealer has done). I also like that they don't mark up the service. Rudy will also send regular customers little post cards at home saying thank you. It is nice it is across the bridge from shirlington so you can go there while waiting for your car. It can be a little challenging to find at first. Appointments can be made but they mostly accommodate walk ins- best to go early in the am because they are always so busy. read more

I called ahead on a Tuesday afternoon to see how late they can take an inspection. Ed was super friendly on the phone advising 5pm was the cutoff, so I rushed my trusty Camry here right after work. Even though I had two people ahead of me, they took me in and my inspection was completed extremely fast! Everyone there was so friendly and even suggested I sit behind the counter and away from the door since it was SO frigid out. The best part was I had a groupon, so my inspection was half off! No pushiness for extra services, so condescending talks because I am a woman, just friendly and professional service. Overall, the people here are fantastic, friendly, prompt and just superb! These guys are great and straightforward! I dealt with Manny. He is honest wrt how long it will take for service. This helped when trying to come on my lunch break. They are able to provide all kinds of service for decent price. Thanks to yelp I was able to see that they had groupon for 50% off of state inspections and emissions. Yowzers how awesome when the state likes to screw you with jacked up state laws that appear to be written by 4th rate disgruntled lawyers. Why new vehicles need state inspection does not follow any sound judgement. II have used Automotive express twice over the past few months: GOOD: In general I have been quite pleased with my most important issue: customer service. The courtesy these people show is worthy of considerable praise. I am almost always treated with respect and thoughtful consideration for my needs. I took a car in for an issue & they drove me home on the test drive. In almost every instance they always thoroughly explain the situation and the need for repairs. They tell me what the part in question does, why it needs to be replaced, how much it will cost and how long it will take. They have always delivered the cars on time or early, though they do make a point to give vague delivery times (and no guarantees) to give themselves flexibility. They are fair in their pricing, and they stand by their work, but won't install outside parts. NOT SO GOOD: My car is older, and on it's way out with 185k miles. I am looking to keep down costs as much as possible. I made that clear when my engine was misfiring. I was originally quoted $600 (replace igition coils, tune up, & fuel injector service). To their credit, when I asked what the minimum was, they said front ignition coil, but bare recommended repair was still $300. They charged a reasonable $60 diagnostic, however in the end the issue was resolbed by changing the spark plugs. OVERALL: I think they're a pretty good outfit and they do good work for respectable market prices. I think they're honest considering that, but I do think you're at a bit of a disadvantage here if you don't know anything about cars, but you can always get a second opinion. People clearly like them and their work, and I would say I am one of them. read more
