Buyer Beware I purchased a vehicle from AUTO BY TOM INC, and the car broke down immediately as I was leaving the dealership. I returned it the very same day and formally requested a full cancellation of the contract. The vehicle has remained at the dealership since that day -- I do not have possession of it. Rather than resolving the issue fairly, I was informed that the contract would only be canceled if I paid $3,500. I do not have this money, and I do not believe I should be required to pay thousands of dollars to cancel a deal on a vehicle that failed immediately and was returned the same day. I contacted the financing company and was told that only the dealership has the authority to cancel the contract. I have made multiple good-faith attempts to resolve this matter amicably, but I have consistently been told that cancellation will only occur if I make this payment. This situation has caused me severe stress and emotional distress. I am currently seeking psychological support due to the impact this experience has had on me. Additionally, I am deeply concerned about potential damage to my credit score -- something I worked very hard to build honestly and responsibly. I expected professionalism, transparency, and integrity when purchasing a vehicle. Instead, I feel trapped in a situation that could seriously harm me both financially and emotionally. DO NOT BUY A VEHICLE FROM THIS PLACE, THE CARS ARE NOT RELIABLE. We bought a broken vehicle. He is not a trustworthy person. As soon as we left the store, the van broke down. The moment the vehicle malfunctioned, I immediately called him and informed him that I did not want to proceed with the purchase, as the vehicle was obviously defective. But the worst part was the lack of respect shown to me and my wife. He mocked my situation, treating us with extreme disrespect and lack of empathy. I have a record of everything that happened with photos, videos, and text messages. My wife and I are having many problems because of this; it is not a trustworthy store and this person is not trustworthy. I do not recommend doing business with this individual. I would very much like to say what I think, but I will not let my emotions control me. I just want to forget the terrible experience I had at that store and I deeply regret ever meeting this person. I contacted the bank to cancel the contract, and they informed us that only the seller could undo the contract. I contacted him, "Tom," to terminate the contract, and he mocked me, saying I could sue him and the store, speaking sarcastically and making fun of my situation. In another attempt to terminate the contract, he asked for $3,500 to cancel it, which makes no sense. Why would I pay that amount? The vehicle broke down 10 minutes after leaving the dealership. Another important point. At the time of purchase, he assured us that he had taken out car insurance, but later discovered that he hadn't, which is absurd because we could have had problems with traffic laws considering that insurance is mandatory in the state of Florida. He lied, saying he had insurance, but he hadn't. We left the place without the mandatory insurance. DO NOT BUY A CAR FROM THIS PLACE. This individual treated us with complete disrespect. From the first moment we had problems, he was sarcastic. He's saying the financing can't be terminated, but it can. I contacted the bank, informed them of what happened, and they told us that only the seller can cancel the contract. I contacted the seller to try to terminate the contract, and he, being very sarcastic and disrespectful as always, charged me $3,500 to break the contract, which is illegal. I informed the bank of this incident, that he charged me $3,500 to terminate the contract, and the bank told us he shouldn't have charged that amount. Not to mention that he also charged us for the towing, which is another absurdity because the car broke down when we left the store. I don't even know why I try anymore.... This is what happened to me yesterday, Monday, Feb 4, 2019, with "Mike" who claims to be Tom's partner. People don't realize that abuse doesn't stop when one abusive situation ends. It reverberates forever. It's like the tiny rings that form when you toss a pebble into the water.... the rings just keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger and seemingly go on forever..... or endless waves crashing on the shore. I lost EVERYTHING that day and it's just not getting any better. Everything..... just because I didn't want to die. Over the past 6 years and 50 weeks (yep, Feb. 11 will be 7 years) I have been the not-so-LUCK(y) recipient of a wide variety of abuses, insults, insensitivities, rudeness, and other soul crushing, devastating and hurtful things; this is one of them. I found a car I like. I researched the crap out of it. I studied up on all the tricks those asshole used car dealers play to screw people over the best way they can so I wouldn't fall victim to their underhanded tactics. I went there with all kinds of papers in hand so they couldn't buffalo me about ANYTHING and right from the start I was being treated like shit because I rode in on a bicycle. My ex had my car repo'd for my birthday back in 2014. The bike is all I've got for transportation (no public transportation due to PTSD). The car I wanted wasn't there and then I found another one even cheaper. It's a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. It needs tires and a hitch but other than that it's in amazing shape. Only 130,000 miles on it, too. Leather (though I don't like leather seats) the inside is immaculate. The outside just needs a bit of wax. $2995. Came home to research it some more and went back just a little while ago to see if we could make a deal and I could get inhouse financing. That's when it really shit the bed. Instantly the price went up $1500 and I would need a $1,000 down payment and the registration and fees would still have to be added to the cost. Then he said the interest rate would be 23% and my monthly payments would be $275. He said he's not going to try to finance a car "that cheap" as he was waving me out of there (shooing me) like I was some kind of homeless person looking for a handout. He never even got on the computer to make believe he was trying. He was just spouting off. Mortified, I left as quickly as I could and was able to hold back the tears till I made it back home just a half a block away. Terrible service, old gentleman was trying to push way too much. Was looking for a nice little sports car and stumbled across an Audi TT. Okay shape. Decent price as well. Tom, the owner ( hence the name ) seemed okay, but his partner, ( mentioned in the beginning) lost them their deal, basically told me to go get the money already. Would've bought the car if he wasn't pushy. Terrible selling skills, lack of respect. Went somewhere else and bought a much luxurious car, less miles and way better price. It's a shame they lost $5000. Hire people who actually care about the customer. read more
