Found a hole in my new speaker install when I took my door panel off

I went to Autosound Lab because of its long-standing reputation in Fresno. Unfortunately I had a bad experience on several levels and would recommend taking your business elsewhere. Autosound Lab is under new ownership, and in my opinion it is not the Autosound Lab we used to know. **THE SALE** The owner was patient and helpful during the sale. My one nag: it felt like he was more focused on selling what he had in stock than on what my needs actually were. Business-friendly, not customer-friendly, in my opinion. **POST SALE** When I came back because the install wasn't done the way I understood we'd agreed (more on that below), the owner's demeanor changed completely, at least in my experience. He came across as short and confrontational rather than the helpful person from the sale. Before I could finish explaining what was wrong, it felt like he was already painting me as the problem -- too picky, that kind of thing. He even mentioned during that visit that he'd accidentally undercharged me and should have charged more, which struck me as a strange thing to say to a customer who came back with a complaint. My honest impression was that once he had my money, he wanted nothing more to do with me. **PROBLEM 1 -- THE INSTALL** I spent thousands of dollars, a premium price, and I expected a premium install. I chose Autosound Lab specifically for its reputation. Part of the job was custom work on the box to fit a custom setup in my vehicle. In my opinion they did a poor job the first time, and it left the whole setup compromised for my needs. I drove off hoping it would be fine, but after the shock wore off I brought it back -- and that's when, in my experience, the owner turned confrontational. Credit where it's due: they did fix it, and the second time they did a great job. Dealing with the owner through that process was the unpleasant part. **PROBLEM 2 -- THE RATTLE** When I got the vehicle back, I noticed a bass induced rattle from one of the doors with a new speaker. I was told that's just what happens when you add speakers to doors. For thousands of dollars, I would have hoped a premium shop would at least try to mitigate it -- to me that's part of a premium job. **PROBLEM 3 -- WHAT I FOUND** This past weekend I had time to pull the door panel to add some sound padding myself. When I got it open, I found a hole in one of the 6x9s, and when I went to pull the speaker to send it back to Kicker, I noticed the mounting bracket was cracked too. To be clear: I am NOT accusing Autosound Lab of damaging the speaker or the bracket -- I'm only describing what I found when I took it apart. I have no proof of how any of it happened, or even whether it's what's causing the rattle. I'm not a speaker expert and I'm still sorting that out. All I can say for certain is that the door rattled(when playing music) when I picked up the truck, and when I opened it up there was a hole in the speaker and a cracked bracket. Based on how my last visit went, I didn't want to go back, so I reached out to Kicker directly instead. To their credit, they're replacing the speaker under warranty. I'll install the new one myself and find out whether the bass rattle goes away. Credit to Kicker for standing behind their product. **CONCLUSION** In my opinion, Autosound Lab is not the Autosound Lab of years past. It's under new ownership, and the new owner has stated publicly -- in his own Yelp replies -- that he does not honor warranties or repair commitments made under the previous ownership. To me, this feels like Autosound Lab in name only. Worth noting: in the end it was Kicker, the manufacturer, that took care of me, not the shop that did the install. Different type of warranty, I realize, but it left an impression about who actually stands behind their customers. And based on how he's responded to other reviews, I expect the reply to this one will be more about defending himself than taking any of it on board. More than anything, though, I hope the owner's attitude toward customers changes. Reputation is what carried this shop for decades, and in my opinion, if people keep getting treated the way I was, I don't expect it to stay in business very long. I'd love to be proven wrong. Shout-out to the two installers -- both seemed like good guys. EDIT: According to crutchfield the brackets that come with the speakers are not compatible with my truck. I received the replacement brackets and I am able to theorize why the bracket installed in my truck was broken. So probably both speakers are problematic. I will order replacement parts and fix it myself. I am confident that if I was to take it in and request a fix I would have to deal with a bad attitude. IMO, the owner would do himself a favor to hire someone to work with the customers and he can stick to operating his business.

Phenomenal experience! The install (completed in 2018) is absolutely first class. The sound quality & setup makes the car more of a "transportation device for my stereo". Love it! Nearly as awesome is the post-install experience: I've been back twice to have settings reconfigured & they've been fantastic & super helpful. There's only one car audio place to visit & this is the one!

Exactly what we wanted. Any questions he will ask

True customer service by David. True craftsmanship but John and his assistant. They want to see the car before quoting. Just like my trade I need to see the job first. WE ARE ABSOLUTELY SATISFIED.

If this is what you are looking for, he is a wealth of knowledge and very good at what he does. My most recent visit was to ask about a damaged speaker. I ordered some speciality wenge wood speakers that sound fantastic but the exposed speaker cones are irresistible to the touch of my two year old. He pushed it in and damaged one of the cones, driving me into a panic that had me scouring the internet for hours looking for fixes. My fears subsided when Mr. Stereoadvisor himself took a look and told me that although the cone was pushed in, it would have no effect on the acoustics. Otherwise I'd have to go back to the manufacturer in a foreign country. So it was mixed news, but most importantly I still have a perfectly functioning speaker that behaves as it should. If only I could say the same for my two year old...

I brought my vintage Marantz 2265B to Stereo Advisor after purchasing it on Facebook Marketplace…read more The receiver had two known issues when I bought it: the left phono input channel did not work, and the FM tuner was nonfunctional. After researching repair shops that specialize in vintage audio equipment, Stereo Advisor seemed highly recommended, so I drove about two hours each way from Fresno to have the unit serviced. When I dropped the receiver off, I explained the issues in detail and specifically requested a full diagnostic and repair evaluation. I also clearly explained that I work night shift in an ICU and asked to be contacted by email or text only so I would not be woken up during the daytime between shifts. Despite providing both my email and phone number on the intake form, I still received phone calls during the middle of the day while sleeping. A few days later, I was told that several capacitors, relays, and power board components needed replacement, that the FM tuner required repair, and that additional diagnostic work would be needed on the RCA/phono section. I was quoted roughly $500-$600 total including the initial $100 deposit, which I approved. About two weeks later, I received another daytime phone call saying the receiver was ready for pickup. I drove back to Modesto, paid the remaining balance, and was told the receiver had been fully tested and was functioning correctly. Unfortunately, after finally setting up the system at home once my speakers and turntable arrived, I discovered that the exact same issues were still present. The left phono channel still did not work, and the FM tuner still did not function. That was extremely frustrating considering the amount of money spent and the amount of travel involved. While I was given a bag of replaced capacitors and components, the original problems I brought the receiver in for were not resolved. The most disappointing part of the experience was being told the unit had been tested and repaired when the two primary issues remained unchanged. Combined with the repeated disregard for my requested communication preferences, it left me with very little confidence in the overall service experience. Based on my experience, I personally would not return for future vintage audio repairs.
