When I saw the reviews I was expecting service to be on slower side and not friendly. I did not see that today.There were several waiters that checked on us. My partner and yelpie had coffee which he said was actually quite good. I will definitely come back for their enormous and generous portions after a hard workout. A friend on Yelp recommended me to host a brunch to gather more Yelpers to try out Brunches in the city. Since I am not a morning person, I sure missed what everyone is bragging about. Yeah. I want to try everything at least once. Especially, this Avalon Diner on Katy Freeway is easily accessible from the loop. I am not far from this "The Villages" location. I first learned about Avalon Diner was from my friends who live on the Katy side. But that restaurant has been closed for quite some time. I came here few weeks ago during lunchtime. Restaurant was about half full. I ate a 1938 Drug Store Burger. It was really tasty. So you asked, why 1938 and Drug Store? According to its website, the original restaurant was a food stand inside of a drug store established in 1938. The burger was the item sold back then. Who wouldn't want to have a taste of history? It's the top of the menu, you can't miss it. That was me trying a new restaurant. I look from the top because waitress recommended me so many items to try. According to the cashier, this Avalon Diner has been at its location for 30 years. Everything still looking pretty good. My most recent visit was a group of friends gathered to celebrate the Pride Month. I ordered Migas with Chorizos and Grits. Oh. My. Gosh. It was so good. One of my friends had to leave early. So, he ordered a Speedy-Gonzales breakfast (not sure what they are but I took a picture). It came out so quick, we couldn't even finish talking about the weather. My other friend ordered an omelet. She explained what was in there but my eyes were staring at the humongous portion of food. Hahaha. One of the good things is that waitress helped us to split the bills to the individual level. I wanted to make sure the waitstaff gets a fair share of tips, I asked to pay for one of my guest and added above my standard percentage. Me and two friends arrived at 9 am. There was still plenty of seats to choose from. By the time we left, all tables were all taken and had people waiting at the front. Because it's listed as a LGBT-friendly restaurant on Google, I wanted to help promote the idea of supporting local businesses with the same message. I also have requests to host more brunch events. So the seating is odd. You basically walk in and the lady at the front tells you how many people are in front of you and you all just wait for people to leave and than take the table you want. She could actually seat you but that would too much work for her. The food was really good. French toast was cooked perfectly and eggs done really well. Biscuit was super fluffy and good. We love Sunday breakfast at Avalon! They have that classic diner feel, complete with coffee and good food ! I can't believe I haven't left a review before since we come here so often! Parking: There's plenty of parking since it's located In a small shopping center. There's handicap spots and a ramp almost right in front. Seating: Though the diner is on the smaller side, there's a good amount of seating options split between booths and tables. The booth seating can be a bit cramped/narrow. Wait: We've never had to wait but also usually have breakfast pretty early (830am on sunday). If you come around 10am you may be in for a wait. Food: The food is great! Served warm and fast too. I usually get a breakfast plate but today decided to try something different. The eggs and grits were good as always, but I was disappointed with the chicken fried chicken. It's not actually on the menu, but the waitress said they could make it since they make chicken fried steak (which is on the menu). Unfortunately the chicken just didn't taste quite right for me, but someone in my group got the steak and said it was great. I'll be sticking to my usual breakfast options next time. I've been to Avalon diner many times and have always enjoyed it. However, I went a few weeks ago for breakfast. After we were served our breakfast, a roach crawled across the table. We informed the waitress and she said that roaches always come out when they exterminate once a month. Perhaps they need to exterminate more often!!! All I gotta say is CHICKEN TENDERS! CHICKEN TENDERS AND CHICKEN TENDERS. Off the chain and you get a whole plate full. This place was a recent discovery of mine during lunch break. They close at 3pm so that's good to know for those who are late lunchers like me. The inside is set up like an old diner, I think the bar chairs are the original seats from the old pharmacy/diner. Since I've had the chicken tenders on lunch I've gone back for breakfast quite a few times. So far I've tried the Golden Waffle, pretty good but comes with no sides. I've tried the Deluxe Egg Sandwich, BOMB and it comes with your choice of grits or hash browns. I have also tried the Biscuits and Gravy which wasn't all bad but it was more like gravy with a hint of biscuit lol. They smothered it more than I'd like but some people may be with that. I tried the Breakfast Wrap as well, loaded with cheese, eggs and bacon with ranchero sauce mmm. Quite delicious as well and comes with a side of grits or hash browns. All the food I've tried seems to be pretty good my only hesitation is the hash browns and unfortunately the grits. The hash browns are more like a potato patty and aren't at all crunchy. I looovee crispy hash browns, it's almost a breakfast necessity for me. I just don't get that from Avalon, but I have asked for them to fry crispy and they seem to have no in between lol. It's either soft in the middle or they fry every shred of that potato to a crisp and it comes out like potato stix if y'all know what those are. I'd prefer the potato stix over mashed hash browns so that's what I go with now. On to the grits, eat them quick because they will get thick on you. Id like to preface this by saying that I can generally smell things my husband and son can not. Like milk that is every so slightly off, etc. So last Sunday the three of us had breakfast there. Sunny side egss had an undertone of wet dish cloth. Bacon was past its prime but they fried it up anyway and served it to all three of us. My husband said "it wasn't that bad" but I spat it out. I didn't try the grits but my husband said they were awful. He also said he was surprised they messed up the hash browns which are so easy to do. I didn't try those either but the greyish color Is usually due to heating and reheating in too much oil. I left hungry cause I only ordered eggs and bacon. Coffee was average diner coffee. In a Zombie apocalypse I might consider heading there for supplies but would likely perish from food poisoning using their stash well before the Zombies would even get to me. read more

This place is terrible and a shame to the original Avalon diner. This is my second review to ever leave on Yelp, but it had to be said. The Avalon diner on I-10 is one of the worst diners I've ever eaten in. The burger chewed like gum. Terrible meat. The French fries were also thick and chewy and weighed about 1lb each. How can you screw up a burger and fries? The tenders aren't nearly as good as the Kirby location. Thick and chewy chicken, and the batter was flavorless. My wife and I ate breakfast here and though it was pretty good. Of course, we ate at the regular breakfast hour. Subsequently we ate lunch there with my son. The experience was terrible. Of course, we ate lunch about an hour before they closed. We won't be back, at least not for lunch ever. My wife ordered the chili cheese omelet. What an abomination that thing is. Basically, eggs cooked in chili. Yuck. Her biscuit was burned on the bottom. Black as it could be. See photo. When we reported this to our server and asked for a replacement, she said' They're all like that since they've been sitting on the pan for a while." What the heck? So suggest another piece of bread or something else. She said what she did and walked away. I ordered a dinner salad and a chili burger. The salad was wilted and very meager for $3. My chili-burger was so so. The chili was obviously left over from the rest of the day as they were about to close. It was barely warm and simply plopped on the two halves of the bun. It was not appealing at all. A definite disappointment. Pitiful. My son had the Triple B plate. Blackened Cajun Chicken -Bacon-Blue cheese. It was a tough chicken in a simulated blue cheese dressing. No crumbles. It might as well have been ranch. It was just awful. The trifecta, all three meals were awful. No need to tell the waitress because they're all like that right? Thankfully, my son ordered a peppermint patty shake and it was really good. The only saving grace about the visit. We also liked the fried pickles but they were NOT enough to save the meal. Take it off your list when you're in Houston. They've been in business for a very long time, but if they keep serving this kind of garbage, and calling it food they won't be for long. Let me begin by saying we dine at Avalon a lot so this is written with the perspective of not just one or two visits. Sunday morning for this family usually means breakfast at Avalon Diner. Get there early because there can be a wait and the place fills up quickly. Like most diners, the menu is extensive with the usual menu staples such a eggs, pancakes, burgers, milkshakes, etc. Service: When we first started coming, the service was okay. At the least it was tolerable and acceptable. There would be an occasional Wow but the bar was low so never anything exceptional. The past few months I would say the service is downright horrible. Extremely long wait times to be greeted, get drinks, get your order submitted, etc. it's just bad. I would also like to say that the cashier is always so darned grumpy! I'm not sure why but I don't think having someone unhappy at the front is good. If they're even remotely busy, forget any kind of quality service. It's not going to happen. Food: I have tried so many things on the menu and sadly, I have come to the conclusion that so much is just...bland. Everything seems to need sauce or salt! How can you do bacon wrong? But yet I have actually sent the bacon back! It's either way over done or way under done. It's bacon. Come on! The bright notes....they do make tasty silver dollar chocolate chip pancakes and exceptional milkshakes according to daughter & husband!! Four of us met for lunch on Tuesday. Three happy and one very unhappy, me. Service was great. Smothered steak delicious. Chicken fried steak great. The Hawaiian Chicken really bad; over cooked and dry and tough. All they did was cut up some pineapple small pieces and put on top. Very disappointed. I will never have that again. Surprised by all the negative reviews. I've only been once, but that visit was enough to tell me I need to come back. I live in Austin but am originally from Houston. In fact, I grew up about 2 miles away from this place. It sits where Spring Branch Bank used to be, but I digress. I've gone to the Avalon Diner on Westheimer many times over the years. I found it great to have this location in my old 'hood. I had chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and collard greens. All were exceptional, including the gravy. The only thing that wasn't 100% awesome was the cornbread. I didn't try the rolls. My friend had the chicken fried steak omelette. I thought it sounded crazy, but wow.....it's incredibly good. I wouldn't give them no stars. I went Mother's Day had worst service. My waitress was a old white female. Since I was Mexican was treated horrible like if I couldn't afford to eat here. After taking my order she gave me a large oatmeal when I asked for small. So she got up set said I can't take it back went to the lady by register and I could hear her talking about my order and she was shaking her head with other lady. I turned around and am asked if there was a problem I can pay for large no problem. After bring our food just actually throwing on table. I was so upset couldn't even finish my breakfast. This is a solid go to breakfast lunch choice. I love the spinach and feta omelette and the migas. They are doing their covid safety precautions right too. They installed plexiglass between the booths and other areas. They also took the condiments off the table, use a scan menu and use paper napkins. I was impressed with their changes.
