We stopped by Avalon Pocket last night and ordered a few things to go. Unfortunately I was not very hungry due to a weekend of stuffing myself with junkfood, so I really only nibbled at a few things. However! My scant nibbles proved to be exceptionally tasty. The fried pita chips were crisp on the outside, yet soft on the inside, Fresh, delicately seasoned and not terribly greasy. If I hadn't already been enormously full I could have easily inhaled a large portion of them. And they are definitely large portions; one order of chips and hummus is enough for 2-3 people. Speaking of hummus, I did sample the avocado hummus, which was really delicious. You'd think the addition of fatty, creamy avocado might make this a little too rich, or over the top, but it still tasted light and fresh and delicious. My dining companions ordered gyros and falafel sandwiches which all summarily disappeared down everyone's gullets. I can only surmise they must enjoyed them immensely. The only complaint was that someone did not like banana peppers and "other pickled, vinegary crap" on his sandwich...but I think he probably forgot to ask them to leave it off, so I do not think that was the restaurant's fault. They have a really, really wonderful soup that sits out in a cauldron in front of the counter; they leave little cups and spoons out so that one might sample it, if one is so inclined. And we were. And it was so amazing that we ordered 2 big containers of it to bring home with us the next day. I may be mistaken, but I think it is a soup-y form of koshari/y, which I believe to be an Egyptian street food full of chick peas, lentils, macaroni, tomatoes and lots of wonderful spices. They serve it with a tangy house made hot-sauce that really just elevates what is already a fantastic dish to an entirely new level. I highly, highly recommend it. The waitstaff was friendly (VERY friendly), the establishment looked clean, and yes, as one other reviewer mentioned, there is some interesting, albeit rather confusing wall-art. I don't mean it at all unkindly when I note that one in particular looks like a sort of demented Georgia O'Keefe/Clive Barker collaboration. I rather like unusual art. That piece really spoke to me. (I think it was saying "KILL KILL KILL. Just kidding. Maybe). I like to think that the talented soul behind the soup is the very same creative mind behind the wall-art. I will definitely be back on an emptier stomach to give the rest of the menu items a try! read more

Fantastic food! The sun dried tomato hummus was to die for! The chicken wrap was HUGE, and the grape leaves were perfect. Cute little place. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the restrooms needed some attention...out of towels and soap at the same time! If only they were closer to winter park. I was attending a training in the area and was looking for an inexpensive lunch. The name does not clearly describe the excellent middle eastern food they serve. I have been eating falafel wraps for most of my life and it has been hard to find good ones in Orlando. These are great. The tahini is not too tangy. The falafels are crunchy enough on the outside and moist and wrapped on a soft pita. After visiting Greece, it has been hard to find gyros that are like the real thing. I have looked all around and tried many different restaurants to crave that sensation of a true gyro. After finding this place, I have constantly found myself ordering over and over again. They are very quick after an order is placed, I live 5 minutes down the road and I could leave my house immediately knowing it would already be done. Their sauce is incredible and I highly recommend dining here. I order at least 1-2 times a week. read more

Ok so been here before but didn't do a review. This place has seen better days. First time tasting a falafel but it wasn't great. I got the lunch special for a dollar more( wrap with fries and a drink). Complaints: took 15 mins to make, couldn't change a fountain drink for a bottled water even though they are the same price, meal was dry, little to no taziki sauce on wrap, people in the back were talking more than cooking, I asked the cashier for silverware and she seemed bothered to get it. Just all in all, better skipped than gone. Not again anytime soon. read more

This place has been in my area for a while but for whatever reason I always forgot about it. A few weeks ago, I remembered it and decided to stop by and check out their offerings. Upon walking in, the place was empty (early Friday afternoon). The owner was sitting at one of the tables doing some work and he welcomed me immediately and offered to help with my choice and proceeded to tell me all the specials they had that the menu did not show. They all sounded delicious. While I was still deciding he offered me a tasting of the lentil soup they had and he also gave me two stuffed grape leaves for me to try. Wow! The grape leaves were amazing. I've tried them before but never warm. He told me absolutely everything was made in-house and nothing comes from a can. Between that and the grape leaves, I knew I was not going to be dissapointed. I decided on a pasta with ground beef and bechamel sauce. While I waited I kept talking to the owner about the place, the location, where they were from, etc. Him and his family were so friendly and made me feel welcomed right away. The pasta was delicious and very tasty. Since then I have also tried the moussaka (eggplant with ground beef) with bechamel sauce and chicken with mozarella over rice (comes with tabouleh and pita). Both dishes were excellent! I will definitely keep coming back! More often too! read more

I will never set foot in this place again. I am furious. After work I decided to take my wife and young daughters to Chiles when we decided to try Avalon pockets. We used to eat there almost weekly when the previous owners were there. We walked in at 8:42 p.m., and the owner told us they were closed. I told him the sign said they close at 9, and he very rudely sighed, rolled his eyes and asked "ok, what do you want? What do you want? " it told him nevermind, I can get gyros somewhere else. Nevertheless, we ended up eating down the road at milanos, where we were greeted in a friendly manner and welcomed. Avalon pockets can keep their food and horribly nasty service and attitude. This was by far the best Greek food I've ever had. For a quick lunch experience, this place was perfect. And it's very clean, and the staff is very friendly. My girlfriend at three gyros, two orders of falafel, and half a lamb. Luckily it's right next to an ice cream place, so she didn't get too cranky on the way home. But seriously, eat here often. My family loves the food and we eat here at least a few times a month. But I found out something that bothers me greatly. The tips that we give are not going to the workers who are making our food, why???? Let me guess does the owner think he's entitled to them I don't think so. I believe that could be against the law. Until this changes I will not give any more of my money to this place. I arrived and asked what vegetables they had available for the Gyros. I guess it's the owner that answered no vegetables, only onions, tomato and sauce. After a couple of minutes he also mentioned lettuce as an option. Which I had to mention that he threw me off as I still believe onions and lettuce are considered vegetables. The following couple ordered and he asked them if it was to go. He answered to them "it's not for here, it's to go" we are closing soon when he still had 40 minutes to his Scheduled closing time (9:00pm). Ever since they've been under new management, their approach to customer service and the taste of their food is questionable at best. Previously, I always got the same thing and came several times a week - a falafel combo that comes with fries along with a side of pita chips and a small hummus. Now they're telling me that I can't have a small hummus with my small pita chip side, but must pay several extra dollars for a full container. The last time I went, they forgot to give me a drink with my combo and questioned me when I asked for it. I'd also like to mention they were skimping on the fries the last few times I went too. I never throw a fit when I go, so I know it's nothing personal. Needless to say, this place will never get another dollar from me. read more

He's a picky eater and he ate the whole thing... even the hummus. I have to say since moving to Avalon park I'm generally disappointed with the food in the area.
