I don't get the hype. Flavor was mediocre. Very geared toward an American pallette with not enough seasoning. When he asked me what heat level I wanted between 1-10, I said 10 and he said "No. You can't handle that. We use habanero." I grow and eat much hotter peppers than that but he didn't want to hear it. He asking "Are you ready for the best meal of your life?" and I'm still waiting, but I won't get it from here. My dish came out bland and my Mom's came out almost spicier than Medium, which is what she ordered. He was super fake and the restaurant was a little dirty, which is just a real downer for me. 2 Stars because they offer gluten free samosas. read more

I am not exaggerating when I say that this was one of the best dining experiences I've had. I ordered the lamb enchiladas and it did not disappoint. I also ordered the rose petal lassi which surpassed my anticipation given that I've only tried the mango lassi to that point. Loved this place!!! The owner was extremely friendly, came up, explained the healthiness of his food and told me that I would spend the rest of the day thinking about it. My girlfriend had Curry Chicken at a spicy level 7, which was just right, while I had the Curry Jamaican Jerk Chicken and Pumpkin Enchiladas, which were incredible. We also had Naan with mint chutney, which was very good. Left feeling like we had something lite and healthy. I have been craving the Avatars for months. I live in the east bay so I don't get out to Sausalito too often. I was so excited to visit yesterday. I got the sweet potato enchiladas (my favorite!) and the gluten free veggie samosas (thank you for offering allergy friendly options!) I ate it all and was so satisfied, without being overly full! I wish I could say this satisfied my months long craving, but it did not. I woke up this morning wanting more! The owner is always so friendly, and we love the outdoor atmosphere. I wish they would expand. If they had a restaurant anywhere between Berkeley and Benicia I would be going all of the time and turning everyone I know on to this beautiful fusion secret. The owner was really nice but bragged the whole time about how his food is the best we'll ever have and nothing in America beats his food. I don't know if he was trying to hype the place up before we try it but he did boast a lot. And to set that straight, it wasn't the best. I've eaten a lot of Indian fusion in the west coast, and this wasn't really the best. The blackened jumbo prawns were very good. The minced lamb was okay, nothing extraordinary. The mixed curry trio was pretty ordinary too. The bread was like regular chapathi but he spoke tales about it that sounded like I'd get something amazingly new. A little pricey for the kind of food. I can tell he's very passionate about his restaurant but hyping it up so much and not living up to it is kind of bad for his business. The best dish was the prawns and the masala chaas. read more

My wife and I had a longing for some good Indian food, and I checked Yelp to see what was available nearby our Southern Marin County home. One of our favorite Indian restaurants is closed on Wednesday nights and there was too much traffic on Highway 101 going North to go to an Indian restaurant in San Rafael. So, we decided to tray Avatar's Restaurant in Sausalito, located a short drive from our home. Well, when we arrived, I found a recently installed wheelchair accessible parking on site. Great! A positive effort. As we went to the front entry, we went by the outside dining area in front of the restaurant. Multiple relatively new picnic tables - not one wheelchair accessible! Strike one! We were greeted at the front door by a nice gentleman who asked our preference for dining seating - either outside or inside. Clearly, we couldn't sit outside with no accessible tables so we went inside and were seated at a dining table that wasn't wheelchair accessible. The table base blocked my wheelchair frame, not allowing me to sit facing forward as most people sitting at a dining table expect to be able to sit. OK, it's a small restaurant with owner/manager/serving staff that have no idea what an accessible table means. Then, as I'm finding more and more as we eat out, table tops (when they don't use tablecloths) that have been wiped between customers but remain "sticky"! Those "little" details, are some of the most important in the restaurant business. In my opinion, having dining table tops that are sticky from a clear lack of cleaning, suggest the general level of care taken in the managing of the operation. Strike two! Then, we waited about 10 minutes for someone to come to our table to take our drink order (overpriced - $22 - Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Noirs Rose (375ML half-bottle), and after relaxing with our drinks, take our dinner order. During all of that time (in fact this relates to the whole time we were seated), there was a constant loud roar from all of the restaurant staff who were continually yelling at/to each other! That did not make for a positive, relaxed, and enjoyable dining experience. Strike three! We ordered two entrees - CURRY TRIO (CHICKEN, LAMB, PRAWNS) ......................................................................... $24.95 SEAS1ONAL MIXED VEGETABLES .................$17.95 Although the menu stated: "All traditional curries are served with a plate of saffron-flavored basmati rice", both dishes were served with what looked to be spinach fettuccini (and, by the way, we got fettuccini, without the spinach!). The Curry Trio had one chunk of Lamb, two small pieces of chicken, and one prawn! For $24.95! Strike four! Based on our "dining experience" at Avatar's Restaurant, we will be sticking with our regular Indian restaurants in the future and don't plan to ever go back to Avatar. read more

Indian-Mexican-Cajun fusion?? Avatar's was a must-try for me. I've never seen such a strange fusion-combination before, but I knew I loved all these different flavors. The restaurant was small with just a few tables and bar seating, but the enthusiastic owner came to us and told us we would have the best meal ever! Instead of ordering, we just told him the proteins and spice level we wanted and he stepped back into the kitchen and brought us back three dishes to share. First, Indian-Indian: the lamb curry was served in a thick sauce with grilled vegetables and basmati rice. The chunks of lamb were unfortunately a little bit tough, but the flavor was indeed on point--nicely spiced and not too salty. Second, Indian-Cajun: definitely the favorite dish among everyone in our party was the sea bass, which was coated in spices and cooked with vegetables and served over rice. The sea bass was so tender and flaky with the perfect amount of seasoning! The fish itself had such a distinct, natural flavor that was really memorable. Finally, Indian-Mexican: we had the chicken-pumpkin enchiladas with rice, and these were fantastic as well! The pumpkin imparted a nice sweet counterbalance to the spiced "mole" sauce, which really brought the whole dish together. Nice! Overall, a really interesting restaurant with really interesting dishes. I can't say it's the best Indian or Mexican I've ever had, but this place is definitely worth a try for something a little different! read more

This is 3.5 stars for me. Ashok is a performer - almost like a circus ring leader (but in a good way). He loves attention and basks in his own jokes (again, in a good way). I actually quite enjoyed my conversation with him. Turned out that he came from a city very close to where I grew up, so he told us he felt more challenged to find us something we liked, haha! I did appreciate their food comes with a dose of his "dietitian" background - less oil, no refined sugar and no refined flour. Also loved the fact that he experiments with vegetables like most other places don't and had several veggie options. I grew up eating Indian food but have a very global outlook towards food. That being said, not sure if I am fully sold on the whole mexican fusion thing. It was good to try, definitely was not bad, but I am not likely to come back to try it. We were able to successfully guess most of the ingredients Ashok gave us, and it made for a fun "forensic" meal lol. We started with the Masala Chaas - packed a big punch and I loved it. The roti that came on the side with the chutney was something i enjoyed the most. Made with whole grains and very thin, it totally reminded me of what mum makes back home - ah, nostalgia! Anurag had the ground lamb and loved it. Lily and I had eggplant enchiladas with a bean sauce and my plate had an assortment of veggies. Loved the curried grilled veggies on all plates, not a fan of the enchiladas - wish they had a non corn tortilla option. I also happen to hate beans, but oh - well! The dessert was interesting, to say the least. Well made, but not sure if I could have it again. But then, I am not a big dessert fan anyways. Will I be back? Maybe, but this time I will stick to my own meal choice instead of letting Ashok talk me into stuff, haha! PS - we never got our money back for guessing right ;) Their prices work for a place like SFO, but don't think they would last long in someplace like DC even. read more

Great spot if you crave Indian food but you want something different. Their fusion of Indian and Mexican is a successful one. I asked the owner whether I should go with the vegetable enchiladas or the sweet potato curry ones. He said "I'll surprise you. You will not be disappointed." I got the sweet potato ones and was indeed a happy customer. The staff was very nice and attentive. Great place to take your kid as well. read more

Came here for lunch a couple Saturdays ago with a group of friends and none of us were particularly blown away by our meal. We arrived around 1 pm, and to my surprise it wasn't too busy. We were seated once the whole group arrived, and the owner himself came to our table to greet us and introduce the restaurant and menu. What a pleasant surprise! He also promised a very unique meal experience and that we would like everything so much we would lick the plates clean. A bold claim, and alas, not one that was lived up to, but I still appreciated the effort. There were six of us, so we were able to order a decent number of dishes to share. I wasn't in charge of the ordering (left that up to my more experienced brown friends), but this is what I remember (* means recommended): *veggie samosas: pretty standard samosas served with yogurt and tamarind sauce *rock shrimp in fresh chutney: probably one of the better dishes from this meal. the shrimp tasted very fresh and came in this delicious green sauce rose mango dreams: this one was interesting as it was a blend of sweet and savory. I know it has mango in the name, but I definitely wasn't expecting the sweet part of it since it's ravioli. not sure if I liked it, but I'll leave it at "interesting" chicken curry: chicken was super bland and dry. do not recommend lamb curry: lamb was better flavored than the chicken but was a little tough to eat *daal curry: everyone at the table liked this some kind of enchilada : didn't eat as I don't like enchiladas *Avatar's dream (dessert): hands down the favorite dish from our whole group. it was a dessert unlike any we've tried before. think it was kulfi (ice cream) with pistachios on top and served in the most amazing mango sauce Paid about $30 pp after tax and tip, so it was not a cheap lunch. read more

This place is amazing. The owner (his name escapes me) greeted us himself. There was 4 of us and 1 is a vegan. The owner immediately said he had a great special dish for him. We had 2 appetizers and one was set up for a vegan. All of the food was fantastic, authentic, very unique and unbelievably tasty. Food 5/5: one of my good friends recommended this place to me, so I brought my husband and mother-in-law. We told our server (also the owner?) we are vegetarian, and he told us not to look at the menu, as he will take care of everything. First he brought samosas - this was the most average item out of the entire meal. The samosas were good, but exactly what you would get at any Indian restaurant. The mango chutney was sweet, but I wish the appetizer came with a better portion of green and tamarind chutney. For our mains, we were given a curry-rice-veggie plate - we liked this the most. We couldn't identify what the curry vegetable was (it was green, similar to saag but so unique and tasty) and the veggies were good. We also were serve the Punjabi enchiladas and rose-mushroom ravioli. In order of preference, we liked the curry rice plate the best, then the enchiladas, ravioli and samosa. Everything had a good spice level, and we were happy with the meal overall. *we didn't take pics as we started eating right away Service 4/5 - this was a unique experience, as we didn't really place an order. We trusted the server/owners recommendations (we were already planning on ordering the enchiladas and ravioli) and we were pleasantly surprised with all the flavors. The one thing that was unsettling was the bill - not only is the restaurant expensive, it was hard to figure out how the bill was calculated. Our total for 3 samosas and 3 entrees came out to $73 before tax, 79 after tax and 90 after tip. The food is worth it for a special occasion, but $30/person is quite extravagant and unexpected for the quantity of food. Regardless, we had a positive experience. Location 4/5 - a bit far from the Bay Area, just past downtown Sausalito. Good if you have planned a SF/Sausalito outing/day trip. Plenty of parking and nice outdoor seating Overall 4.5/5 - I would probably only return for a special occasion, would bring my parents to try the flavors. Enchiladas, ravioli, grilled vegetables and Indian greens and tofu. Perfect combination of spices and Minimal if any oil. Mr Ashok had told us that we should be ready to get amazed.... I was pretty excited to check out an Indian restaurant in Sausalito, but this was the weirdest food experience ever and most of the low reviews here may have had this same experience. The owner comes by and does his charismatic pitch about the restaurant being the "best" food and "no oil". We are taking our time on the menu and ask for recommendations over and over. Instead of giving a straight answer he is like "okay give me a spice level and meat" and he picks for us - there is no indication of what you will get or how much you pay until after his party tricks are done and you see the bill (we were way over what we wanted to spend). One of the meals he put together was a $36 "something and something" as he likes to say which was not on the menu. It was such an odd experience and my party left feeling scammed. The food is okay, and yes there is oil (not sure why the owner does all the false marketing). If you want a more straight forward experience order from the menu directly. I will not be going back and wish I had realized the owner's tricks from the get-go. Really frustrated and hope other people can avoid the theater. read more

I got the Punjabi Enchiladas filled with smoked eggplant and it was not good at all. Not sure why they don't have paneer as an ingredient. The basmati rice that came with it was bland. If you're in Sausalito you MUST try Avatar's. We were in San Fran but came over the bridge to go to Heath Ceramics and to have dinner here. We arrived right before 5P when they opened and were seated immediately, along with a swarm of other guests arriving at the same time. The Restaurant was completely full within 15 minutes. Service was excellent. We shared the veggie samosas, Jerk Chicken (spicy) with grilled veggies and the Crab & Pumpkin enchiladas. I've had better naan, I felt ours was a bit on the oily side. All three dishes were fantastic! I can't wait for my boyfriend to try this place. I told him if I were Angie Jolie I would have had this meal flash frozen for him and brought back to LA but I'm not ;) so he'll just have to bring me here and try it for himself. My 12 year old son enjoyed dinner very much and not every 12 year old can do Indian/Mexican fusion ;) I also enjoyed this dinner before running the Wipro San Fran the very next morning and did not have any problems whatsoever, not everyone chooses to do Indian less than 12 hours before a race ;) but I wasn't going to pass up an opportunity to try this place.
