I like their mango ice cream dessert. I find the entrees all taste similar in terms of sauces. I love Indian food but Avatar's entrees, especially those with tomatoes, taste the same and fwiw, I've eaten Indian food on 3 continents. I have baseline knowledge including taking Indian cooking classes, making my own curries with mortar and pestle and grinding my spices. Picky or passable? You decide, it's worth one visit. NB: last time I had the mango ice cream pie dessert with pistachios it had picked up the flavor of something else in the fridge (onion?) and it was not delicious. We ordered pick up and the food was hot and well packed. The lamb enchiladas are excellent and packed with flavor. The chicken enchiladas were moist but we personally enjoyed the lamb one more! Our party of five (+ dog) had a great dinner experience here on a Saturday night. They have tables set up six feet apart and we felt very safe! Two of the five members of the party are gluten and dairy free, and two others are only gluten free, and they were very careful to keep this in mind when taking our order and serving the food. The menu has many options, but they encourage you to share what components you want (meat, fish, veggies, etc) and let them surprise you. To start, they have amazing gluten free/dairy free vegetable samosas with three sauces (sweet, savory, spicy). We definitely recommend these and the order of two is perfect for sharing. We had enchiladas with salmon, blacked salmon, jerk chicken, and chicken curry and all were amazing. After our first visit to Avatar's we were hooked! A great menu is enough to bring me back somewhere. Add an engaging atmosphere and I'm in heaven. A chef who successfully combines flavors from various parts of the world in unexpected ways can own me. As I'm writing, the eateries that have won me via this culinary madness are passing through my mind. Avatar's offers something called Punjabi Mexican, which right away fired my interest. And, then there's the owner, who takes orders at every table and spreads his magic and high energy throughout the place. Our first visit, we both had Yelp open, flipping through pictures of menu items, trying to determine what to try because the menu items were beyond our ability to imagine. He walked up and told us "You don't need that, tell me what you love and I'll make it for you." How can resist that! He began to ask us a series of questions. Then, without further explanation he walked away and a few minutes later out came some magical food! For me, crab and pumpkin enchiladas. The lamb enchilada was good for what it was but the lamb was very heavy and I guess lamb and cheese do not pare well for my taste buds. I would not try it again. However, my guest loved his ground beef lamb dish so no complaints there. AND my favorite was the dessert. It was creamy with just enough sweetness. I would go there just for the dessert. We were traveling up from Southern California (Laguna) and happened to stumble upon this oasis on Yelp. What a find.... The owner and his family helped us out by welcoming us enthusiastically and then proceeding to order just the perfect meal for us. We tried a little bit of everything in this cozy, Sausalito restaurant and each dish was better than the one before, capped off with a delicious dessert. I cannot say enough good things about the restaurant and family... this will definitely be on our must visit places during any of our visits to SF. Disappointing experience. Feel we were ripped off. We had planned on ordering the Fusion Punjabi Enchiladas. However, the owner very charmingly talked us into ordering other menu items. We were not told the price of these items. We ended up with 4 curry dishes, 1 glass of wine, and 2 Taj Mahal beers (way too large. Again these were not shown on menu so we weren't aware of size or price of the beer). Plus 1 order of veggi samosas. Total cost with tax for lunch for 4 people - $205. Food was mediocre (good but nothing special) but worse was the feeling that the owner had done a number on us. So a word of warning. As we were outside reading the posted menu, the owner came out and declared: "the best food you've ever had, or you eat for free!" Pretty hard to turn down a man that confident. We let the owner order for us. We had blackened chicken and Indian enchiladas. Both were fantastic. The blackened chicken had a great mix of perfectly mixed veggies like zucchini , broccoli and carrots. The sauce had a perfect level of sweet heat. The enchiladas also had a great flavor. Service was indeed fast. The beers were cold. While the food may not have lived up to the hyperbolic statement from the owner, it was pretty darned good. I can't really think of any places like this in terms of the mix of indian food and other stuff with an indian twist. It's pretty good. I got a lamb curry and my wife got some chicken curry enchiladas. Both had good depth of flavor and I don't know why we, as a society, don't enchilada everything just to see what works. I did ask them to make my curry hot (like a 7/8 out of 10) and while it had some heat, I would have been fine with it being quite a bit hotter. I get why they're hesitant though to just light customers on fire. read more

Everything was great, but the showstopper, without a doubt, was the Punjabi Enchiladas. Yes, it sounds like a very weird combination. (Curry, tortillas, and jack cheese? What?!) And it is. But, it's a weird combination that works! My Husband and I were sharing both dishes and fought over the last few bites of the enchiladas. Visited Avatar on a day I decided to bike over from the city. I heard about this place through some other yelpers and had to check it out. They are known for heathly dishes that are low in carbs, no oil, no dairy, and no gluten. It's a perfect place if you're a vegan or have special diatary needs in your diet. Service was great with recommendations made and our table checked up on. We ordered the lamb enchilada and chicken curry. The lamb enchilada is served with Basmati rice. Just came to California for the first time with my mom, and on our second night in the outskirts of San Francisco, we found this absolute gem. This is instantly one of my favorite restaurants I have ever been to, and trust me y'all, I know how to eat good food. For my entreé, he surprised me the Punjab enchiladas with moderate spice (and it was spicy), and these were the best enchiladas I've ever tasted. I wish I lived in this area so that I could try everything on the menu, but if you are on limited time like me, GET THESE. 1100000/10 For dessert, we had their one and only dessert option: Avatar's Dream!! 10/10 - this dessert is unlike any I have ever had before. It was a fusion of flavors such as amaretto, lime, coconut, and mango, all into one BEAUTIFULLY presented slice. Think super cold and and firm frozen custard meets key lime pie/cheesecake, with a chocolate ice cream crust and pistachios on top. I don't know what's in it and I don't care. Not heavy food, seasoned with fresh spices and herbs - a welcome treat on a warm afternoon. The star of the show was the grilled shrimp and veggies (a super flavorful rub) over rice. This place! It's not big, but has an outdoor patio with extra seating. The owner makes you feel like family when you walk in the door. So nice and accommodating. We ordered the flat bread at the beginning. Don't skip this! The pickled carrots were my favorite thing. A little spicy and delicious!! The curry chicken was delicious. Tons of flavor and the chicken was moist. The basmati rice was cooked perfectly and accompanied by grilled veggies. The portions are really big. I was certainly skeptical when we pulled into the lot and saw a nondescript storefront restaurant. All of the excellent reviews and the description "Indian, Asian Fusion, and Mexican cuisine " was too alluring to ignore. We started with the vegetable samosas which are a flavor explosion in your mouth. Marveling at the combination of flavors (sweet, savory, fruity) we devoured them leaving only crumbs. I tried the jerk chicken enchiladas and my son had the ground lamb. Both were delicious and quite filling. We order a medium plus heat level which was perfect. The mango shake cooled down the heat from the meal. What struck me at my core was the kindness exuded by the owner who clearly loves feeding people's souls with food. We shared the button mushrooms in curry, the gluten-free vegetarion samosas, the trio (lamb, chicken & shrimp) over basmati rice and the trio over curry, along with darjeeling tea. It was all excellent, I want to move to Sausalito and find my way into this man's family. I want to work in this restaurant and get paid in curry. Came here today for lunch; it was so HOOOT; the restaurant has an open kitchen so it was even hotter inside. This place is phenomenal...the owner made us something off the fly (I assume so as I don't remember seeing it on the menu). 1) tofu enchiladas with some amazing out of this world filling inside. 2) tofu 'saag paneer' type of dish.
