We were hangin' in Sausalito for the day. We decided to try this well-rated restaurant after wine tasting. Allow me to confirm, that Indian and Mexican food get married here daily, tango, make babies, whatever you wanna call it. I had the curried sweet potato enchiladas. Avatars restaurant is tucked away in the beautiful city of Sausalito. We walked from the ferry we took from the San Francisco port, about a good mile and a half but was a nice walk through the city. Located in a shopping strip, it does look alittle sketch on the outside and in but the food they serve here is delicious. We got the jumbo shrimp in chutney for apps, and shared the Jamaican jerk chicken enchilada and lamb curry dishes were phenomenal. The shrimp was fresh and chutney very subtle and delicious. The lamb curry was like none I've had before, spicy with a kick, didn't really have that typical curry odor but more of a tomato base even. The enchiladas were a bit overhyped. They were delicious with generous fillings inside the enchiladas but nothing special. I think the rave was more about the fusion between Mexican and Indian than the actual taste. 5 stars does not do justice to Avatar's. Avatar's is not food...it's an experience. Nested in a little corner, this place serves the best comfort food. We don't mind driving an hour and a half just for the dal rice served by Mr Ashok. He truly treats his customers like royalty and who does not like such pampering? Ofcourse, the other items in the menu are phenomenal too but we are huge fans of the simple lentil rice. Touches the heart! Please try this place out if you haven't already! read more

This place has a unique menu of fusion dishes! I came here a little bit after they opened and there was plenty of outdoor seating available. The staff was very friendly and the service was quick. The prices are a little high (about $20 for my mesl) but everything is tasty and good quality. For food, I had the Punjabi Enchiladas with chicken and the Rose Lassi. The spices in the curry were very good and the heat was tolerable enough to still taste everything (I got medium spice). Also, the chicken was moist and tender, and was a good amount to fill the enchiladas. As for the rose Lassi, if you like floral flavors without it being too fragrant like perfume, then this is worth a try. You first taste the tart and creamy yogurt flavor then the subtle rose taste settles in. I thought that the creamy drink was great to offset the spicy food. The location had plenty of parking at the time and they also have a bathroom if you need it. Overall if you're in the area I would give this place a try! read more

Absolutely phenomenal meal and my only disappointment is that I didn't discover this establishment earlier. I have my boat berthed nearby and I usually order the same old pizza/Chinese food since it's nearby and fairly decent, but tonight I decided to go for a walk and I'm certainly glad I did because I discovered Avatar! I was hesitant to try something new at first, but the super friendly host Essek happened to be standing outside and we struck up a conversation. Super nice guy and the next thing I knew, I was placing an order. He recommended the chicken tiki masala enchiladas, and when I mentioned that I would like to also order a small treat for my puppy, he said "don't worry, I'll take care of it" and he did indeed! I have lived in the Bay Area for almost 8 years and I'm surprised I didn't know about this place. Limited menu but a pretty good experience. The owner has a to praise about his restaurant and it's food and he's got a reason. The mushroom appetizer, masala lassi, and paratha's are super tasty. And the ingredients they use are quite healthy; less oil, less salt no rice flour (maida). Will visit again. read more

A fun little spot definitely worth stopping by. It has such a vibrant neighborhood feel, with welcoming and friendly service and what seems like plenty of locals. You can definitely see the passion that goes into the restaurant. The food itself is super solid too. The jerk chicken is savory and the sauces are awesome. Seriously the whole dish should be covered with sauce. The rice on its own is well-cooked but bland. Towards the end of the dish, I ran out of sauce for the rice sadly. I'm new to Marin and have an attitude that the restaurants are not as tasty as SF. And I'm mainly right which is why I was so happy to get delivery from Avatar's. (Had to break my Uber boycott since they only deliver through UberEats but maybe Marin is making me less judgey.) Samosas were really good. I wouldn't call the Jerk Chicken Enchilada an enchilada at all - maybe they got the order confused, there were no tortillas in sight - but it was good. This is one of my favourite Indian restaurants in the bay area. They serve Indian cuisine with a twist. Their masala chaas is super delicious and refreshing. It contains perfect amount of spices, ginger, etc and everything works together so well. As far as main course is concerned, I have tried their saag tofu with basmati rice, vegetable ravioli and vegetable enchiladas, all were impeccable. We got the Vegetarian samosas, Jamaican Jerk Chicken Enchiladas, and the Jumbo Shrimp Curry for a total of ~$30 dollars, not including tip. Vegetarian samosas: nice and crunchy, with a yogurt sauce that was super tasty Jamaican Jerk Chicken enchiladas: pretty yummy, and definitely has a kick to it. The owner of the restaurant asked us how spicy we want it, we chose 7 and he gave us 6 -- it was definitely spicy. Jumbo Shrimp Curry: also super yummy but I wish there was more curry for the rice. It also comes with roasted vegetables. The food was good for the price we paid for. What impressed me more was the service though -- the owner was so nice and friendly to everyone who walked through that door. read more

I decided to come here for a late lunch today with friends. Highly reviewed on Yelp, I was expecting a reasonable dining experience. Wow, was I wrong. First and foremost, the service was extremely slow. After ordering, it took maybe a whole 45 minutes for the food to arrive. They got the drinks wrong when they finally arrived. Ordered a cream soda, got a root beer. When the food came, the salmon was undercooked and frankly, inedible. Then, the yoghurt marinated chicken was a very sorry portion for the price. Friends who got the curry chicken and lamb both thought that they were the worst - lamb was undercooked and tough; chicken was too tough to eat. Then, to top it all off, the bathroom well, let's just say that the bathroom certainly wasn't ideal. Actually the worst I have seen in a long time. Sticky floor with suspicious stains, overflowing waste basket. For a restaurant of this price point, I expect a LOT nicer food, service, and cleanliness. My friends did like their beef enchilada and the basmati plate. So here is the one star. read more

I will start by saying the food is good. The soup was really good and the dinners were tasty as well. But Yelp users need to be aware that the PRICES on Yelp for the food here are WRONG! I ordered 2 soups and two chicken plates and the price was close to double what is listed on Yelp. Paying $70 for two dinners togo seems way overpriced. I even brought up that the prices on Yelp are incorrect to the manager and he told me I was probably looking at the wrong restaurant. When I showed him that I was looking at the right restaurant he told me that Yelp users put in those prices and he can't do anything about it. Months later I just checked and all the prices are still wrong. This is misleading, and for this reason I am leaving a poor review. read more

What I love about this restaurant is how fast paced it is, they try to seat you as quickly as possible, order as quickly as possible and serve you as quickly as possible. The owner is very nice and explains the menu to you if you need help, he also is able to custom make dishes depending on how you like them. I tried the mango milkshake (amazing), chicken curry, and chicken enchiladas, everything was VERY good. My only minor complaint is that for the price you pay the portions are a bit small and all of us (4 people, ordered 4 entrees, a milkshake, and an yogurt drink) all left still a bit hungry. My chicken curry only came with 4 pieces of chicken (they were pretty sized pieces but still) Like I said though, overall I really like this place and the food is cooked and flavored very well, I would definitely return to try some of the other things read more

A nice outside space adjacent the entrance to US101 I thought it would be good. The owner told me it was unlike other indian food as they did not use ghee, but Olive Oil - which I dont think works with Indian food. The menu is disappointing bc so few actual indian dishes - I tried the samosas and these were the standard bought-out and turned into the best part of the meal. I tried the full plate of Lamb curry with vegetables and rice and was really disappointed. The little bits of lamb were tough, and the dish was very overpriced IMO. The mango lassi was good. Had the most amazing dinner out tonight at Avatars in Sausalito. Extra special is the willingness and talent to accommodate the Paleo AIP or Autoimmune Protocol/Anti-Inflammatory diet and have it taste amazing!! First let me say that this is how a restaurant is supposed to operate. The owner, Ashok is very passionate about food, service and connecting with his customers. It is not uncommon to see returning patrons greeted with a handshake or hug. You will feel like family. Ashok has a phenomenal memory. No matter how long it's been since he's seen you he will remember you. Second, one would not think that Indian fusion cuisine would have anything compliant with my kind of dietary restrictions. If you have any diet restriction (Paleo, AIP, vegetarian, etc) they will accommodate you with open arms!! Ashok is a nutritionist/restauranteur and very knowledgeable about anti inflammatory foods and understands how important that no cross contamination happen. It is such a luxury to be able to order off menu and have it accepted as a wonderful opportunity. He asked me which protein (grass fed) would please me and then asked which veggies were agreeable based on his fresh seasonal produce. All I said was no nightshades, no rice, no dairy and he made me the most amazing Lamb with sweet potato, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and cabbage with a garlic turmeric sauce. Given how difficulty is for me to eat out with my dietary restrictions, I went back for four nights during the week of our stay in Sausalito. On another night, I had venison with sweet potato, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and cabbage (seasonal) with a garlic and ginger curry. Simply AMAZING!!! If licking the plate we're socially acceptable, I would have done so! The best thing about this place is the owner - chef. He maintains it a point to go and talk to each customer and offer his recommendations. He made the conversation so interesting, throwing in quizzes to guess the ingredients in lieu of free food, which of course we couldn't. Went there on a beautiful foggy evening with my family. The food here is very innovative. The owner is very friendly and takes care of every customer's personal likes. The mango milk shake was yummy. We asked him to get the food which he thinks is the best for us. He didnt even tell us the name of the dishes, just asked us what type of food we would prefer. Our choice was sea food and one veggie dish. He brought in 3 very interesting preparations. The crab, shrimp and broccoli were very nicely prepared. My suggestion: Tell him you are a virgin Avatarian, and he will set you up with the best things he has according to your taste. Oh my goodness! I love, love love this place!!!! The most delicious food I have ever tried! And the owner - he makes the whole experience so much fun! I always let him pick my food and he never disappoints!!! Today he made the most delicious sea bass with shrimp and muscles and I honestly licked my plate! But wait - there is also the DESSERT! Had heard some good reviews from friends. We were in the area and thought of trying this restaurant for dinner. The restroom could be more cleaner. The server was really nice and was trying to make our visit interesting by challenging us to guess the vegetables in the dish. We let him decide our menu of vegetables or filling but we said we will have a curry, enchilada and paratha. All vegetarian. The enchilada had taro root filling with paneer, curry had saag and served with some rice. The parathas are simple parathas. Everything was delicious and was very fondly made which we could feel when we ate. No preservatives added. We did have buttermilk as well which was superb as well. Must try! read more
