Had heard some good reviews from friends. We were in the area and thought of trying this restaurant for dinner. The restroom could be more cleaner. The server was really nice and was trying to make our visit interesting by challenging us to guess the vegetables in the dish. We let him decide our menu of vegetables or filling but we said we will have a curry, enchilada and paratha. All vegetarian. The enchilada had taro root filling with paneer, curry had saag and served with some rice. The parathas are simple parathas. Everything was delicious and was very fondly made which we could feel when we ate. No preservatives added. We did have buttermilk as well which was superb as well. Must try! read more

Walked all the way from the main part of town to this quiet area after learning about an Indian/Mexican restaurant. Not a big spot by any means, but was able to secure two seats at the bar and quickly order. People working the place were really nice and gave us plenty of recommendations. Between two people: New Zealand Lamb Curry ($17), Smoked Eggplant Enchilada ($14), Mango Lassi ($4), and Mango Milkshake ($5). After a bit of a wait, the drinks come out. Lassi has an intense flavor, albeit more sweet than my liking. Milkshake on the other hand has a better balance, and cooler due to the ice cream (better pairing with the hot meal). Meal comes out next - the lamb curry is a hearty broth with a big pile of white rice and grilled vegetables. The veggies were forgettable but the meat is fantastic, wish there was more of it (especially considering the price). Enchiladas were great, a light tortilla topped with cheese/sauce - filled with curried veggies. Large spiciness which really brought out the flavor of the vegetables. Came here on a Friday afternoon for lunch with the family. We were immediately greeted by the owner who showed us to our table. While we had decided on a few tables the owner suggested he order plates for us depending on our taste preferences. Definitely smart marketing in that sense because we were only going to order 3 plates for 5 people with maybe a couple of appetizers but due to his suggestion we got roped into appetizers, drinks, and an entree for everyone. Despite that, do not regret it! The food was delicious and you could tell it was freshly made. My favorite were the enchiladas and the mixed vegetable plate. Let me start off by saying that this place was hyped up to me by my cousin and brother in law. I had high expectations going into this and that usually ends up with me being disappointed. But, I was definitely not let down here! The place is decent sized, and we were seated immediately on a Friday afternoon for lunch. The owner of the restaurant was our host and immediately got started by getting to know us. He told us about the concept of his restaurant and what he was trying to do with his fusion food of Indian fusion with Mexican and Italian. He literally told us that we should put away the menus when we told him our food preferences (he asked about allergies, what we don't like to eat, diet restrictions) and then proceeded to make his recommendations, which included the famous Punjabi Enchiladas. We ended up getting the samosas, Punjabi enchiladas, ravioli, a "saag" (which is supposed to be spinach based) and a mixed veggies plate. We also had the salt lassi/Chaas (yogurt drink). The lassi was great! It was carbonated and that added a nice twist to it. Very refreshing. The saag dish was delicious. Even better was when we found out it was not made from spinach as it usually is, but from dill! It was on point! The samosas, and mixed veggies were a good side dish. They were made with quality and care. My second favorite was the enchiladas. I didn't think you could add an Indian twist to that, but it was very tasty. I'm not going to say what it was stuffed with, the owner will tell you once you try it. My absolute favorite dish was the ravioli. It was stuffed with methi (fenugreek leaves) which my mom used in Indian cooking while growing up and this was amazing. Very tasty and an awesome concept. Overall, 5 stars! First- good points- Owner is friendly and staff tries to provide good customer service. Taste is good depending upon what you order. Now the areas where serious improvement is needed. Adding excessive spices and butter oil food may enhance the taste but creates all kind of health issues. You find out indigestion later on because of the food. Fusion food can be considered as creative but the food is good only once. The owner is pleasant but charges are randomly calculated and there is no itemized bill presented. Upscale Indian restaurant with a twist! They offer indo mexican fusion which is very rare to find. With different types of Punjabi enchiladas, it does provide food for every palate! The restaurant has been in business for last 30 years, and this shows they have been doing good. The owner is very nice to speak with and very grounded. He will ask your favorites and make you feel comfortable. He will also try to make alterations if needed. They also are entirely gluten free. I love the creativity. I'm giving it four stars because creativity doesn't always equal success. They accomodated vegan eaters well by recommending vegetable curries you'll love and omitting dairy from dishes. I've been eating at this neighborhood family-owned gem for 15 years -- as long as I've lived in Sausalito. It never disappoints. The food is Indian but has different fusions (Mexican-Indian, Italian-Indian, Jamaican-Indian). "Marindian" is another nickname for the food here. Whatever you order, you can customize your dish to meet your dietary needs (no gluten, no dairy, no meat, etc.). Owner, host and wonder-of-wonders Ashok will greet you and make sure you are happy and comfortable. The dishes are steaming hot and made to order. He will ask you how spicy you like it. They aren't fooling around either! I usually get the Chicken Curry (medium spice), the enchiladas (any kind) or the Yogurt-Marinated Chicken. I have had many things on the menu and loved everything. If you like pasta, try the Rose Mango Dreams! Also, they have amazing Chai tea (so hot it will burn your tongue) with fresh spices and hot milk. Finally, the dessert...Avatar's Dream. This is so, so good - it's like a healthy(ish) ice cream pie, except it's not ice cream. It has lots of pistachios and mango. I'm still dreaming about it. You can sit outside, but in non-Covid times, there is also indoor seating. It's a beautiful place, but the family-owned team make it so much more so. Teamwork, kindness and attention to customers and details are so important in this day and age. Ashok and his family truly care about their community, the people and their gift of making meals. One of the best Indian Mexican fusion cuisine restaurants in the Bay Area. All the preparations and ingredients are healthy. It was pleasure talking to Mr. Ashok the owner and creator of the place. He mentioned his concept of opening this restaurant being a nutritionist. We ordered chicken enchiladas made in North Indian styled chicken with lots of Indian spices and flavors. The mole sauce had great texture to it. We also order the chicken curry and jumbo shrimp curry platter which is accompanied by the grilled veggies and basmati rice. What a bunch of hype...the original Avatar was something special but this iteration is a poor copy of the original one. Everybody is nice and works hard but the food is mediocre at best. The samosas were very good but the lentil soup was watery and had little substance at $8.95. The jerk chicken plate at over $21 was a disappointing non-organic chicken breast sliced into thirds with a sauce that was nothing special. Sorry. So wanted it to be as good as the original Avatar. Better to go to either a Mexican restaurant or indian restaurant and skip this pseudo, overpriced, over hyped nothing special food. I tasted my friends jerk chicken enchiladas and found it had a meager amount of chicken, was spicy but lacked the umami flavor of a real enchilada. Not worth the money. If Avatar's were more accessible to me - as in, in SF proper - I'd be eating there several times a week, AT LEAST. The food is great, and varied - a collection of flavors and items that you never see together but somehow just make sense when Avatar's combines them. Curries, enchiladas, jerk chicken, pasta...it all works. Somehow, magically. But what really makes Avatar's special, what makes it feel like home, is the energy and atmosphere of the place and the family at the center of it.
