I will never stop raving about this place!! I came here once about 12 years ago, and for a while completely forgot about it. But then just as the owner said I would, I started to dream about the food here, and made my way back about 3-4 times this year! The food here is such a unique take on the blend between Indian and Mexican food, and has just the right amount of spice and tang. The owner is so sweet and helpful, and even once made a completely custom meal for me and a group of friends!! I would definitely recommend getting the Rose Mango Dreams Ravioli, the perfect blend between sweet and savory which I've never before had in one dish. I also definitely recommend the Punjabi Enchiladas with curried sweet potato filling, (level 9 spice level because I'm crazy), which come with a side of rice and are the perfect blended dish you never knew you wished for. The dessert here is also amazing- a perfect rose, mango, and pistachio blend which makes the tastiest cake I've had. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. Despite one minor complaint of feeling cramped, it's understandable as there is no surprise as to why this place is packed with guests. The food here is so incredible I'm almost angry I had to experience this level of goodness, as I'm left constantly craving their food from back home in Seattle. It was apparent the owner was working as one of the servers on the floor & actually quite admirable seeing how passionate he is about his business. We made special requests for dishes with only meat & veggies and the owner was more than happy to oblige. Keep in mind - you're going to be getting a more authentic foodie experience here and the levels of spice here are not for the faint of heart. They pressured us to order fast because they were closing, couldn't even look at the whole menu and 5 minutes later after we had ordered our food they let more people in and gave them more time to look at the menu items and order their food. Also the basmati rice was hard and very bland. The enchiladas were just ok. Definitely go to a Mexican restaurant if you want good enchiladas, I guess the fusion between curry and the spicy sauce they used threw me off a little since I grew up eating authentic enchiladas. The waiter, who I presume maybe was the owner, asked us if we were ready for a meal that would change our life. I honestly wasn't really sure what that meant but the enchiladas were incredible, to the point that I'm still thinking about them two weeks later. This is not at all up to the Yelp rating. Good: The samosas and the sauces were great, the lamb enchiladas were solid and a very smart choice for fusion cuisine. Bad: the trio plate that was supposed to include lamb, chicken, and shrimp included exactly one piece of shrimp and a couple very tough pieces of the other two. Rice was bland and the seasoning of the dish was unbalanced. Their "Indian" portion of the menu is not up to par. Just, WEIRD: Waiter (owner?) came to take our order right after my husband went to the restroom. I ordered my kids' food and then he insisted he come back to get the rest when my husband returned. They brought out the kids' food and didn't return for at least 10 minutes to take our order. When they brought out the samosas (after finally taking our order), the waiter brushed an ant off a side plate with his bare hand. Aaand the best story of the night. My husband asked if they had any beer. The waiter's response was, "Yes, millions! Let me get you a nice Indian beer to go with your curry." And without any comment on what kind/brand etc, he rushed back and opened a big bottle of Taj Mahal. Indian/Mexican/Jamaican fusion?! I'd been a big fan of Avatar's in Mill Valley for a casual Indian burrito or plate to fuel a Mt Tam hike, and steered us towards this new(-ish) Avatar after hiking in Sausalito. This is much fancier, with sit-down table service and an expanded menu. The service was outstanding -- we were hungry and curious so they just told us they'd basically take care of us and if we didn't like it it'd be free but if we loved it it'd be double priced. I think we would have been ok paying more because it was sooooo good. We had these hearty samosas to start, with yummy sauces. They whipped up a combo curry for us with seafood and lamb, and the fish especially was out of this world. The enchiladas were so flavorful too. I actually don't usually like enchiladas, but I devoured these. There were definitely regulars here, and if I lived around here I would be there all the time too! I thought about our experience thoroughly. I meant if you have quite a bit of dietary restrictions, this is the place to treat your taste buds. They make dishes suits your diets and it is "so good". However, it was just an all right place for me, and be CAREFUL falling into the owner's "I will arrange it for you, and if you don't like it don't pay" manipulation. He was all about it and I believe it is the way to sell his less popular items or get you to order what he wanted to sell. I should first say that I liked this place, which I feel compelled to do because I'm a bit confused by it. My expectation of Indian food was put to the test. I am used to slightly stronger flavors, and white breads. Mixing whole grains and some Mexican fusion unsettled me a bit. In the end, the whole grain and healthy aspect resulted in a more restricted palette of flavors, not as rich as I expected. The Mexican fusion seemed to have more to do with form. Punjabi enchiladas are still more like Indian food, and there was little in the way of joining Mexican and Indian flavors. I was amused by the proprietor's enthusiasm and jokes for a short while, but sometimes I go to a place for a quiet dinner with my wife, and don't need to be entertained. So be it. This place is apparently a local institution, I later learned from a friend who used to work nearby. Glad it's there. This was absolutely AMAZING!!!! The owner of the restaurant greeted us at the door. We had 4 people: 2 vegans, 1 vegetarian and 1 meat lover. We ALL were satisfied! The owner/server made a bet with us that if we could guess the ingredients it was free, if we said it was "the best ever" then it was double. We could not guess the ingredients, and I am a foodie. So no free meal, but I didn't care at all. It was a blast, and they were so much fun. It was the best vegan saag I had ever had! I just made sure to say it after we paid, so we didn't get charged extra. Lol. I already suggested a couple of my friends to also go there, and they loved it, too. If you are thinking about going, don't delay any more. It's a casual atmosphere and very welcoming. If you're looking for an explosion for your tastebuds, look no further than Avatar's! There are several locations, but this one is the only one I've visited. After a 10-mile hike at Mt. Tam, Avatar's seemed like the perfect reward. Our friends who live in Mill Valley introduced Avatar's to us a couple years ago and the thought of Indian and Mexican fusion food intrigued me. My first time here, I fell in love with the enchiladas and the lovable owner who made sure we all licked our plates clean (not literally, but he does ask you to finish all the food on your plate). When we walked in, we smelled heaven and were greeted like old friends. I ordered the Jamaican jerk chicken with grilled veggies to try something new and my girlfriend had the eggplant prawn spinach pasta. My chicken was perfectly tender, but the jerk sauce was the true star of the dish. My girlfriend really enjoyed her dish as well. Today I went there with my family and friends. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and entrees. They served breads with curry and the bread had dead roach in it. I called the owner and showed him, to which the response was- "it can be some grain" One can completely differentiate between a bug with legs and a grain. The owner offered to replace the breads with a fresh set, and yet again, the bread had another bug in it. This time we took it out and showed it to the owner. I wish, I had taken a photo to share. I may not be able to stop people from visiting this place, but I can surely suggest to scan the food before eating. I was sure a fan of this place before today. Eclectic Indian fusion incarnate, to be found in the Northern end of Sausalito with the marina just barely in sight. If you were wondering what Jamaican Jerk Chicken and Rock Shrimp Enchiladas would look and taste like if done in a Northern Indian cuisine style meets California style, then "Avatar's" is a lip-smacking must do. Tender and fresh cubes and medallions of lamb in a bed of veggies. The veggie dishes were bathed in curry and Indian spices and I thought they were a bit overpowering. Sorry for not being able to name the dishes, but these were custom creations by the chef and so I have no idea what they were called and if you let Ashok create something for you it will likely be from scratch and different from what we ate. The total bill for our adventure was around $100 including tax and tip for five people. He did not ask us if we thought it was our best meal ever or if he should comp us the meal. Just as well! I rate Avatar a 4.5 but let it show as 5 stars (take that, Visitor Center Lady). I would only go there if you are the adventurous sort, like us ;o) Those seeking a more cut and dry dining experience may be taken aback. The noise level inside the small dining area was also a negative. We could hardly hear each other from across the table. As a final note to our interesting Avatar adventure, Ashok told us his story. He began his Sausalito restaurant 25 years ago. Way back then he made his restaurant gluten free and strictly non-smoking; one of the very first restaurants to go this route. He said back then the customer reaction was very negative, and some customers would curse at him for telling them how to live their lives. Never order off the menu! Let the owner know what you're in the mood for and "wa-lah" some food master piece will land on your table that will perfectly satisfy your craving. After showing up too many times on Sunday when Avatars was closed I finally made it on a Saturday afternoon right when the restaurant opened for lunch. My expectations were met, our group of 5 sat down and the waiter came up to us right away promising us awesome dishes that we have never tasted before. I was happily surprised by the dishes we got - some Indian-Mex enchilada, a lamb dish wish rice, and spicy prawns. He started us off with 3 plates which we scarfed down happily and left us craving more so we ordered 2 more - another spiced meat dish and a wonderful cheese ravioli in curry sauce - SOOO GOOD. The Indian-Mex fusion food was awesome, the flavors were strong, vibrant, and the food was fresh. Overall, my favorite was the enchilladas and the ravioli. The owner then offered us a never before dessert (meaning if we didn't like it it would be complementary, and if we found another restaurant with this concoction it would be complementary) - still I haven't quite figured out what the heck the dessert was, all I know is that it was sweet, icy, chocolate crusted, and had pistachios on top.
