People, the cinnamon rolls! A mocha and a cinnamon roll from Avellino was my last meal when I moved out of Bellingham, and I dreamed of them the whole time I was away. Best coffee/latte I have had! We travel and are regularly disappointed. Strong flavorful coffee without being bitter and over roasted (AKA Starbucks ) pleased to find milk options -yeah hemp milk! This coffee shop is a nice little place downtown that serves amazing pastries and snacks! As much as I love the treats, the coffee is sub par but the atmosphere makes up for that. Oh, Avellino, I love your food and ambiance. I love that you have outlets at most of your tables. I love the music you play. The one thing that breaks my heart is the skill level of the baristas (and please, don't get me wrong; I adore the staff here. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and an absolute delight.) But, if my espresso shot comes out in less than ten seconds, something is not right! Adjust the grind? Tamp harder? Please? The past few times I've been here I've literally watched my espresso cascade into the shot glasses within 5-9 seconds. A shot of espresso should take about 25, no? It's always a bummer because I miss out on not only the flavor of the espresso, but I just don't get that fantastic caffeine-high that I'm oh, so addicted to. i keep coming back because of the vibe, though. It's a thoroughly enjoyable place to hang out/get work done. i just wish the baristas were as anal retentive as I am. read more

Best coffee.... period. Of all the coffee shops and cafes in Bellingham, nothing beats Avellino. Chill atmosphere, very Bellingham, and all the ingredients in the coffee are local and fresh. A good example is the caramel, they make it there at the cafe, and it is wonderful. Small interior, but the space is utilized. This is a regular haunt of mine, and its my ideal coffeeshop for many reasons. The small space feels warm and European, and its almost always crowded. Great for people watching, as a meeting place, or for striking up a conversation with a stranger. Also ideal for less social pursuits if you don't mind noise when studying or working. The service is what it is- people who want Starbucks phoney fake nice would be better off at, well, Starbucks (or the Black Drop, for that matter). Oh yes, the food and drinks. Chai is good, authentic, spicy, and not from concentrate or too sweet. The coffee is great- try the espresso con panna. As a gluten-free girl, I fed my sugar addiction by trying all their wholesome, tasty scones and muffins. They have vegan and sometimes raw options as well as regular junky, so its great for people with dietary restrictions or not. read more

Just the other day I went in to catch up with a friend and we stayed in our cozy little seats eating veggie biscuits and cookies with matcha lattes and lavender mochas for five hours. This is my favorite coffee house! Being a NW native there are so many to choose from and Avelino wins every time. The quality of their coffee can be experienced in every shot of professionally pulled espresso. It's true, I stop by big chain coffee stores for convenience when I am too far from Avelino. However, the inferior flavor of cheaply roasted coffee reminds me why I love Avelino so much. It's not just the friendly staff and warm atmosphere but mainly their incredible ability to get it right every time. Holy. Crap. The Chai Lattes are freaking ridiculous here. Can't actually get over how good they are. There's not a lot of seating, but It's a great place to bring a book and hang out with your gluten free snacks and a chai. Seriously. I'm ready to go back for another one. read more

People seem to have already pretty well covered the great atmosphere of Avellino, but something that I am incredibly greatful for is their steady and diverse supply of gluten free baked goods. It's hard being gluten intolerant, not only because of a very limited supply of gluten free goods in public eateries and even grocery stores, but also because the quality tends to be pretty bad. The bakers at Avellino, however, are conscientious and highly skilled. They always have GF Chocolate Chip cookies that are fantastic, and often a supply of numerous other gluten free treats, from muffins, to scones, to breakfast biscuits!! read more

I was out wandering looking for a new coffee shop in which to do some school work. I am so glad I chose this spot - the staff was comfortingly friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed but with some hip qualities. The space is beautiful (the light is warm and relaxing) and there is limited seating, but I had no problem finding a table to myself. I will definitely be back! read more

Rude service and consistently terrible coffee. I've given this place numerous chances and every time I was disappointed. The last time I went was on a Sunday because Adagio down the street was closed. Ordered a soy latte and it was the WORST I've ever had, couldn't even drink it, bitter and burnt. Avellino is a nice little bakery on the hip & happening Railroad Avenue. They make great espresso drinks (like their mocha made with real cocoa) and lots of pastries for the "I need lots of sugar in the morning" crowd. Scones are moister than traditional, almost like a muffin, and you can actually taste the cinnamon in their cinnamon rolls unlike so many others these days. Only issue I had with my cinnamon roll was that there were no raisins or walnuts but the dough was light and tasty. I also scraped off over 2 tablespoons of frosting before I could eat the thing. Clearly this is not a place for dieters. Unless that diet is Gluten Free because they have a very nice selection of gluten free products. Successfully making gluten free pastries is no easy feat and they appear to have mastered several very good recipes. Even on a slow day you should expect to wait for your drink and maybe a table but it will be worth it. Staff is super friendly and not with that "How's your day going?" phoniness. Sitting there reading the complimentary NYT I heard them call several regulars by name. Now isn't that novel? read more

Not impressed. The atmosphere and baristas are nice, yes, but my latte was terrible. The milk was steamed to nearly boiling. If I can't take a sip of my latte immediately upon receiving it, you're burning the milk. Plain and simple. I won't be returning. Do yourself a favor and make the trek over to Lettered Streets Coffeehouse where they know what they're doing. read more
