I love this place. It is local, it is not The Woods, it has great coffee and delicious foods. It has good WiFi and beautiful walls with trompe l'oeuil. This place is so wonderful. The baristas are friendly and fast. The wi-fi is free. The coffee and chai are excellent (coming from a born-and-raised PNW gal). Also, the mochas are made with real chocolate. There's a wide pastry selection, including healthier options, and they've always got a gluten-free selection. They've got plenty of options for milk and milk-substitutes (including hemp milk). The clientèle here is very broad, from college students to professionals. You can either go to work or study, or it's great as a social destination. The cafe features a local artists, and the art rotates often enough to keep it interesting. The chai tea latte is great. You can ask for it to be made with half-and-half instead of lower fat milk. The half-and-half chai tea latte in the largest size possible (probably around 20oz) was $5.25 Wifi is okay, speeds around 10 Mbps down 5 Mbps up, latency is in the 100-300 ms range though. I have no complaints about the coffee. The coffee is excellent. I do have a litany of complaints, however, about the pastries. I enjoy a scone with my coffee, and at Avellino, I find the scones highly unsatisfactory. They have both the texture and taste of sawdust. I'm tempted to say that part of the issue might be the emphasis on providing (just about exclusively) gluten free and vegan options, but I've had gluten free and/or vegan pastries elsewhere that were pretty good. As such, I am forced to conclude that there is something terribly and specifically wrong with the pastries at Avellino. In short, if you want a good cup of coffee, come to Avellino. If you want a muffin that doesn't taste like a mothball, venture elsewhere. read more

Avelino makes the absolute best coffee in Bellingham by far. In Bellingham you usually have to decide between quality and service when it comes to your coffee but avelino has the perfect balance of both. I go out of my way to only patron this establishment for this reason. My favorite thing to get is their vanilla late and their cheddar bagel with sun dried tomato cream cheese. The bagel isn't necessarily spectacular but their cream cheese is what makes it special. They sometimes over smear, but I'd rather that than an under schmeared bagel, ya know what I mean? read more

You're not going to find a better or more welcoming coffeehouse in Bellingham. Not only are the pastries wonderful (and locally made, with a large selection of gluten-free items), but the coffee is well-made and inventive (I'm writing this while sipping the current special, a baklava latte. Baklava. Latte.) The atmosphere is friendly and calming, without blaring music that prevents good conversation. It's a great spot to sit and write for hours, or just watch the parade of people up and down Railroad Avenue. I had to kill some time while waiting for a pair of shoes to be repaired in the shop next door. I ordered a cup of Americano....price was $2.50 I was surprised when the server pulled out a very small (English tea size) cup. A great place with the Railroad Avenue style. They have newspapers like The Bellingham Herald and New York Times which you can read if you don't have your smart phone or ipad (Yes - they have wifi). Great service. read more

I wonder if it was Jessie I ordered my cappuccino from? Hmmm... Anyway, yes, the place is very cozy and friendly and the barista was extremely patient as I stood there pondering my options. I am just getting used to 'coffee culture' in the pacific NW, and had no idea what the question 'wet or dry?' meant in reference to cappuccino. The barista was not at all condescending in explaining to me that a 'dry' espresso drink is mostly foam, whereas a 'wet' drink will have more steamed milk in it. Now you know. And so do I. I assume Avellino has free wi-fi (isn't that mandated for all coffee shops by Washington state law?), but I didn't see any laptops, so I'm not sure. Oh, and two women were indeed raving about the chai being the best in town. I'll have to try it some other time. One other cool thing for all us NYC/East Coast transplants: they have the NYT there...so I may have to stop in every now and again to get my east coast news fix in addition to my chai latte. read more

This is probably one of my favorite coffee houses in Bellingham. I work near this location and often get my favorite coffee drink: the Avellino Fantasia (which is just chilled coffee, cinnamon and orange zest...try it some time...it's amazing). The baristas are very friendly and the atmosphere is very chill. It has a different vibe than your typical Starbucks. The other thing that is a huge plus for me, is that they offer a nice selection of gluten-free baked goods. Sometimes they do get busy, and the wait time can be a little long...but that just means they have good coffee, right? read more

There are tons of coffee-shop/bakeries throughout Bellingham, but after my first trip to Avellino I can enthusiastically say that this one is my new go-to. They've got everything right, from the inviting atmosphere and friendly baristas to a delectable menu. Upon weighing my coffee options, the Avellino Fantasia stood out-- iced coffee with cinnamon, brown sugar, orange zest, and some other spicy notes. This was not your average iced coffee with a few pumps of sweetener, it was crafty and made with love. They've also got a wide range of pastries-- everything from sweet to savory to wholesome. The pesto, parmesan, and sun-dried tomato scone was an excellent choice to go with my sweet drink. An overall wonderful experience to be followed by many more! read more

I dont drink coffee but I am very picky about my Chai. Avellino has a great loose leaf blend with a good flavor balance that they steep in milk to make a latte. I went to Avellino two days ago, and there is something I still can't get over. The coffee was fine, the ambience was cute, BUT... I was shocked as I watched the barista TWICE get food WITH NO GLOVES ON! First, she grabbed a cookie from the jar that only has paper on the bottom of each cookie, allowing the barista's thumb to touch the top of the cookie. Then, I was shocked to see my breakfast burrito being made with NO GLOVES ON! Even if the coffee was the most amazing coffee ever, I won't be risking my health by going there again. read more

Avellino is one of my two favorite coffee shops in Bellingham (the other is the Black Drop). In additon, Avellino's chai is homemade and the best in town. I dislike super sweet or over the top chai (Starbuck's chai is the worst that I have ever tasted) and Avellino's version is a chai drinker's dream.
