I had my boyfriend stop in here yesterday to pick me up some cinnamon rolls to fix a craving. With the current shut downs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I want to support local businesses as much as possible. My boyfriend said the place was clean and the guy was very friendly in person. And their morning glory muffin (non-vegan) was amazing. It was my first time, but it seems like a fun, local spot--one of many, many coffee shops here in Bellingham. And their bakery section looks divine, relative to other coffee shops. My only little pet peeve: Staff didn't thank me when I put $1 in their tip jar :( ... Not only am I lactose intolerant, but also I'm sensitive to soy and downright allergic to almonds--which means there are a lot of coffee shops that don't carry a milk alternative I can enjoy. Avellino carries coconut and hemp milk, and the guys working today were up to trying their hand at making me a hibiscus latte (it was great!). The coffee itself is singularly unimpressive, taking a look at the bean hooper they are black and oily. Upon ordering it becomes apparent that the barista does not understand the principles of espresso and it shows in the final product which is a high volume, thin crema shot. Oh Avellino I want to like you so much but I just can't. I'm writing this review based on the past 4 times that I have been at Avellino only to walk out 2 of them. I love your coffee and the atmosphere and the baked goods but what really does it for me at a place is the customer service. Which has not been very good. This has been my typical and most recent experience: Two people are working the front counter. I watch the barista doing there thing while the cashier is talking to the customer who it seems is a friend. I wait and I wait. I see the cashier look at me not once but 3 times as well as the barista and continue to talk to their friend. No acknowledgement. Even a simple "Hey we will be with you in just a sec" would have sufficed for me ..even if I think it is rude to still keep talking to your friend but I am patient enough. Literrally 5 min past without an acknowledgement...and there was no one behind me! So I threw my hands up in the air and said "really guys?" and walked out. I wish this was a one time deal. I have never pulled attitude with anyone in there even when they get to me and say with an attitude "what do you want...." but I'm fed up now. The customer service has really gone down the tubes there in the past year. Avellino always has had the too cool for school vibe in Bellingham but it was worth it for good coffee and at earlier times a friendly barista. Now I just won't set foot in the place. read more

its ok, food and coffee was good but the service was terrible. there was someone newer on the phone talking to a customer, and I was perfectly fine waiting. The manager was preparing someone else's drink. I was the only person in line, and there were only a few people sitting, so it wasn't a rush. I was totally ignored. When I finally ordered, the manger didn't even pay attention to what I wanted. I asked for 2 things, both to go, and she just tuned me out. she warned me my tea would take 5 min to steam, I replied that was fine, I had to catch a bus in 10. 8 min later my drink still isn't done. its sitting on the counter, already steamed, while she is taking other orders and preparing other stuff. I know how much pressure it can be, but she made it clear she could care less about me. I'm not a needy customer, I don't whine, and I've never complained to a manager. But being given the cold shoulder while other customers aren't is beyond rude. If you're busy and my order is going to take a while, say something. Anything. If you already made me wait 10 min to figure out another situation on the phone, without so much as acknowledging me, dont continue doing the same to, and then make it even worse by NOT ignoring anyone else. To be honest I felt like I was being picked out to be ignored. Maybe a racial or age thing? Not sure, but its an easy decision to never go back and never recommend it. read more

Even though Gluten Free is slowly becoming the norm, it still shocks me when a coffee shop carries anything gluten free. I was pleasantly shocked that this place had large gluten free muffins in flavours that people actually want weather you're GF or not. We arrived at this coffee shop, on the recommendation of the cheese guy at the farmers market. We were there about twenty minutes before the market officially opens and they are not allowed to sell anything before that time...not one minute before, or so he says. No worries. Great excuse for walking down the street about four blocks, past another empty coffee shop, past the Starbucks, and into Avellino. I was happy to get warm coffee. The day was predicted as sunny and sixty...so I was in shorts and sandals. What the weather brought was cloudy and windy. So, warm latte was a welcome distraction. I noted we must be a the right place when there was a long line when we got there. Where the locals go... We were thrilled when I glanced momentarily at the display case, expecting the typical disappointment of nothing I could partake in as it's all gluten, only to see quite a few things...chocolate chip banana muffins, raspberry and blueberry filled pastries, no bake cookies, choco chip cookies, plain and everything bagels, rice krispy treats, and more. All of it was gluten free. Some of it was vegan as well (don't care so much about that). We were only visiting, so we stocked up for the trip home and the next day, with two teens. We picked up some rice krispy treats, both kinds of bagels, the ccb muffins, a raspberry pastry to share, a no bake cookie to share, and one carrot cake muffin with cream cheese topping to share while we sipped on our lattes and chai. Interesting note...they make their own chai for the lattes from scratch each time...so a latte will take five minutes. We had no problem with that, but some might...so throwing out the information. We were thrilled with the carrot cake muffin, despite the dirty look from the fussy guy behind me in line. I didn't stand there and deliberate...I made my decisions quickly, so I think he needs to take a valium and accept he had to wait an extra minute. The cashier was very friendly and quick to gather my goodies and bag them...except the carrot cake. My spouse and I loved our lattes. The coffee was strong enough to still make itself known, but not too strong. My daughter loved her chai. We all loved the carrot cake muffin. On hindsight, I should have gotten right back in line and nabbed the last two. We had the bagels the next morning. The plain one suffered the same problem as many gluten free items: gritty and lacking in any unique flavor...see bland. The everything bagels were really good. Again, wish I'd gotten more. I have never seen gluten free everything bagels anywhere else. The no-bake cookie was large, so we split it four ways. It was your typical chocolate and oatmeal and was really dry, but some people like it that way. The chocolate chip banana muffins were ok, but just like the fruit pastry, they had some really odd flavor. If you've ever had Bob's Red Mill mix, with the garbanzo bean flour, you know what I mean. Bean flour usually leaves a metallic, sour, bitter taste to the bread product. I don't know if the baker just uses bean flour, or uses BRM flour mix, but either way those were really disappointing. The krispy treat was no different. I've made them many times, since going gluten free. They shouldn't taste any different. These tasted different...like too much artificial vanilla was in the marshmallow binding I'd guess. So, overall...very happy to have so many gluten free options, though if you're sensitive to that bean taste, not so thrilled with several items. The gluten free carrot cake is the best! The coffee, latte's, and chai are all wonderful. They are local, they support local sourcing and businesses and the employees are all smiles and wonderful. They shop doesn't seat many...lots of two seater spots, as is typical with local shops. Well worth a visit. read more
