My parents love this place for brunch. I am not a huge fan on the other hand. Service here is pretty solid but the food is not memorable. I came here for brunch yesterday and had the steak and eggs. Beware - though they advertise that it comes with grilled tomatoes, it actually does not, and they haven't gotten new menus? That was the silly explanation I got from our server. Coffee was good - and the location is pretty spacious which is nice. Home fries were ehhh, steak was ehhhh, even the toast was below ehhhh (how do you mess up on toast? oh yeah, you serve old toast, and toast it again). Not my choice for brunch, but like it said I come here often because my parents are a fan. If you are considering this place I suggest you take a stroll down to Flo instead. read more

Whenever I have a chance, I try to come here before heading to school and getting their Avenue Coffee with oat milk, which comes with condensed milk and is delicious. I also go there to study with my fiancée, who usually orders their Green Tea milk tea. All in all, it is a great little coffee shop that I will continue to enjoy. read more

Went this past Sunday for brunch with my 2 Sheepdogs for a nice brunch. Guy who sat us out on the patio was great but that was where it ended. Our server Nicola came out and asked if we wanted to order. We told her we'd like to but she never brought a menu. 5 minutes later we got our menus. People came and sat after us, got menus and set-ups and water. We were ignored for about 20 minutes. She finally came by. We ordered drinks and food. 10 minutes later we got drinks while people who came after us were being served their food. 30-40 minutes after our order, our food came, but we had no silverware to eat it with, no napkins, no salt or pepper. We asked the server and she said oops and walked away. another 5 minutes while our food was getting cold and finally the silverware showed up with 2 salt shakers and no pepper. I called her back and asked for pepper. "My bad" was the response. Another 5 minutes and no pepper. The people at the table next to us was observing the whole thing and handed their pepper to us before using it on their food saying they felt badly. Nice people in my neighborhood. The server never did bring the pepper. In the meantime, we'd paid extra for unlimited drinks and when it took over 30 minutes to get a drink I stopped our server (as I always had to do because she never checked on us or asked if we needed anything) and said I'd like to order two drinks at a time because it took too long to get our drink refills. Instead of saying she was sorry for the delay and that she'd place the order, she told us "no" and that she'd placed the order for one drink already (we'd ordered it 30 minutes before) and that they were backed up at the bar. I told her that's why we wanted to order 2 at a time. She refused to do it. REALLY? For juice? Anyway, on to the food; I ordered Crab Cake Benedict. There was no egg yolk to speak of in the Hollandaise which was nearly clear and very watered down. I couldn't find any crab in the crab cake. It did have seasoning, which is the only positive thing I could say about the crab cakes. The eggs were fine, if cold from waiting for utensils to eat with. The side salad was nothing special but acceptable. My partner had steak and egg with home fries. He said it was all okay but nothing to write home over. At the end of the meal, our server was switched for some reason, and we sat with our dishes cleared, nothing to drink and nobody coming to our table, even to bring a check and there we sat for nearly an hour, while people stood on the street, waiting for a table. A young lady came out and asked how we were doing and we said we didn't know who was waiting on us but that we'd been done for quite a while and would like our bill. She apologized, said she was now our server and sent someone to print our bill. When we got it, I looked and saw that Nicola, the server overcharged by $20 for things we didn't order. I waited for our new server to pass by and proceeded to tell her my issue asked to have the bill fixed. She went away and came back with someone else who I assume was a supervisor or manager. That person was going over the bill with me when Nicola came cruising by and the manager stopped her to alert her of the issue. She half-stopped, glanced at the bill, shrugged her shoulders and walked off. REALLY? I guess she really could care less! They adjusted the bill and I just was so frustrated that I only gave a 7% tip. If they pool tips there. I'm sorry but I was disgusted by the lack of attention. I also wrote a note about how disappointing Nicola was right on the receipt. I don't know if I'll be adamant about avoiding the place in the future, as the prices are reasonable for the neighborhood, but I'll never order that dish or ever let Nicola be my server. And as soon as Sugar Freak re-opens up the street, or Grand Central Cafe reopens after its remodel, I doubt I'll ever go back to Avenue Cafe on purpose. There are so many new and good restaurants now in Astoria, you just can't afford to have such lousy service. Sorry.... read more

i had lunch here once with my sister in the last couple weeks and i'm glad i finally tried this spot. we got seated outside right away and the service was not bad. i ordered the platter of spreads, which included hummus, tzatiki, and one other greek condiment that i can't spell or pronounce, and pita bread. i only liked the hummus - it was genuinely perfection. i strongly disliked the tzatiki, which tasted like cream cheese, and the last item i couldn't pronounce was too pickled and mushy for me. i also ordered a burger with lettuce, tomato, and onion, and i substituted fries for a salad. the burger was overcooked but otherwise good. my sister and i shared the grilled octopus, which was amazing. i highly recommend you get this. my sister ordered the tabbouleh bowl with falafel. she loved this and couldn't stop raving about it. the prices were expensive but it is 30th ave in astoria and all prices have gone up now. i do recommend this spot and i would come back. read more

I was walk around 30th Ave looking for a nice little spot to have lunch and wanted something with a nice outdoor seating area. Ordered the chicken skewer appetizer (added side of pita bread), Moscow mule, chicken quesadilla, and side of guacamole. I ended up making a little sandwich out of the pita bread, chicken skewer, sour cream, and guac. It was deeeee-licious. Wasn't too impressed with the tzatziki sauce. Since I moved out of Astoria a few years ago, I don't get back up nearly as often as I used to. However, my uncle and I got dinner together two weeks ago and stopped in here. I don't recall this restaurant being here before so I think it's fairly new? I ordered the Parma ($12) sandwich on Koulouri bread with a salad. First, I appreciate any restaurant that does not force French fries on me. The Greek salad was delicious and really quite large for being a side. The Parma sandwich was prosciutto, mozzarella, and roasted red peppers. The Koulouri bread is super thick and between half of a sandwich and the salad, I was full. I really love bread, but if you aren't a massive carb eater, the sandwich might be too bread-y for you. I liked it, though! My uncle said his steak sandwich was pretty standard, but he really liked the fries. The ambiance is kind of upscale, neighborhood bar. There were a ton of babies and small children, and the atmosphere is very loud. While I enjoyed my meal, Avenue Cafe has some fierce competition in the neighborhood. I didn't feel like my meal was something truly special, but it was definitely an A-OK dinner! read more

I was a Nescafe Frappe virgin. Crazy, right? Every time I stroll through Astoria, the brunching hordes seemed to be addicted to the beverage. I had to try it. In comes Avenue. Just a block from my friend's place, it served its purpose. Outdoor seating on a hot day, the chance to relax without being hurried to finish our food. I think it might be the European vibe of the place. The service was slow, but we didn't mind. Our grilled haloumi hit the spot, and the guacamole was decent. The table next to us (filled with smoking, frappe and beer drinking Greek dudes) provided us with plenty of entertainment. On the Bloody Mary scale, however, this place gets one star. It was awful. Want to wait 20 minutes for your drink when the bar is literally 10 feet away? Want to have a server that never checks in on your meal? Sure we got a decent half in half out table which was nice but I was so hungry waiting for our food that I ate every bit of garnish that came in my drink and my friends (my vitamin c intake for the day is complete). Had a white peach (surprise surprise) martini which was OK. My friends margarita was way too strong. One sip and I wanted to gag from the tequila. The Meal: *Mediterranean Octopus salad- can't lie I'm a sucker for grilled octopus and this was pretty darn good. Except for the potatoes that seemed lost and out of place. *Crab Cakes- eh, red pepper was a nice touch but besides that it was heavy and fell apart with one touch. *Avenue salad- Mesclun greens, red grapes, thinly julienne sliced pears that you couldn't taste, dried cranberries, candied walnuts with a honey dressing. It wasn't too bad until the middle when there was so much dressing I started to get a stomach ache from the sweetness. My bf and I went on a Saturday for breakfast. Avenue is one of the only places in the neighborhood open before 11am. Plenty of outside seating. We sat on a high table by the window. The service was quick, friendly and attentive. We had the eggs Benny and eggs, waffle and bacon platter. Both came with delicious fries. The Crepes looking delicious too. Solid spot for a meal especially in the nice weather since they have tons of outside seating. We left something and they held it for us until I returned which is always a good thing. This is a sub-mediocre cafe for the trendy wanna-be-hipsters of neo-Astoria. The only thing that was good and bumped this place up from one star to two, is their frappe. It was simple, frothy, and left me super caffeinated all day. Rocket fuel- love it. But the meat and potatoes of the whole experience was less than ok. When our dining companions asked if they could see the regular menu (not just their mediocre brunch/lunch menu)- to order some cold dips, the waitress just said no. Rudely and shortly. It's fine to not be able to do something but she didn't even ask a manager. Throughout the meal she did not once ask how things were. And things were not good. Well- perhaps my fellow dining companions were ok with theirs- I was not. I ordered an omelette. Simple, hard to eff up. Right? Apparently not here. It was runny in the middle, dry on the outside, the fillings were all on one part- and the small serving of home fries left much to be desired. He didn't speak to us at all unless it was grunting about our order and never refilled our water glasses even after our hungover selves gulped them down in the first fifteen minutes. (Me whispering "I HATE YOU SO MUCH" occurred at this point) The brunch menu was lacking - there was no fixed price on the food, just $8 omelettes and usual boring stuff. I ordered the vegetarian frittata which was dry and pretty tasteless - I doused it with vinegar to try to liven it up a bit. The home fries were undercooked and bland also. My friend ordered the eggs benedict and the yolks of her "poached" eggs were completely cooked and not runny at all. Gross. To top it all off, the mimosas were about 90% orange juice. The only redeeming things that made me give this two stars instead of one were the nice outdoor seating under the awning and the lovely bus boy who got us more water after our mouths had turned into the Sahara (THANKS WAITER) and offered a third friend seating when she dropped by to say hi. Avenue Cafe is always crowded so I expected a great experience but was highly disappointed. The inside is trendy and beautifully decorated. However, the music was so loud it was difficult to carry a conversation. The menu is pretty basic so I opted for the Vegetarian Panini. I asked the server if I could have mozzarella on my sandwich and she gave me a smug look and said that it comes with hummus. I explained that I read the menu but would also prefer fresh mozzarella. To which she discouragingly replied, that she would ask the cook. I usually do not alter my dish but I doubt Avenue Cafe has an Executive Chef in the back serving up burgers and sandwiches. The rest of the night our server was non-existent. Until, she dropped off the check. This place is always crowded no matter the day or time ... which I guess means the management doesn't care about quality of service or cleanliness because they will still get the customers. I don't care how busy the place is, there's no excuse for terrible service and not keeping the place clean. We came towards the tail end of brunch time and it was packed. The hostess while perfectly nice said she could seat us right away and led us through the restaurant to a table still dirty with glasses, crumbs, plates and discarded napkins and straw wrappers. She asked if we could wait a few moments, no problem, we walked back to the front of the restaurant, only to have her come and say "oh I have another table". Now we walk through the narrow aisle again to a table in the back. Isn't a hostess' job to know which tables are available at all times? I wouldn't have minded if we were asked to wait in the beginning, it was just a pain to go back and forth. We sat and waited for about 15-20 minutes without anyone coming to us - no water, no place settings, no "sorry, I'll be with you in a few." We were about to leave when the waitress finally showed up. She took our order and finally got water. I asked for a straw which never came and I had to go up to the bar and get it myself. We then waited for another 40 minutes (!) before our food came. We couldn't believe how long it took. They got my side order wrong so the guy had to go back and get the right one for me. And they never gave me butter for my toast and again he had to go back and get it. Sorry, but it's toast for brunch - giving the butter packets should just be automatic. Not once during the entire time did our waitress came and check on us or refill our water. Even if the place is understaffed, it doesn't take long to ask "is everything OK?" or to refill water. The floor is filthy - food crumbs, wrappers, sticky stains make for an unpleasant eating experience. In the bathroom, the toilet paper wasn't in the dispenser but sitting on top of the toilet tank. And the sidewalk with the outdoor seating is littered with cigarette butts and spit. It really is disgusting walking by. This is a shame because the food isn't bad and the last few times I've been here were good experiences. I'm not sure what's happened since then. The whole time we were there, we kept saying we should have just gotten sandwiches from the bodega across the street. That would have been better than this experience. i really think that since it's always crowded, they don't care about service. This place is always packed and I can understand why, but it's definitely not because of the food. It was not amazing. In fact it was the furthest from amazing without being terrible. And it was $13. OK, you have to realize that if you're going to any outdoor cafe on 30th Ave, you're going to be paying up the ass for just about anything, but give me a break. The Salad of all things, was the best part of my meal. The Antipasto plat we shared had a good tzaziki, but the hummus, and the feta with roasted peppers (forgot what it's called) was just OK. Even my buddy's chicken pita sandwich was just OK. I don't mind paying $11-13 bucks for a sandwich, but it's gotta be good. Ovelia down the street on 30th ave has this same model, but at least their food is awesomely delicious! Good points though, the drinks are always good. Except when you're paying $6/Corona. It's a god damn Corona w/ lime. OK, not going down this road. But the blended drinks are pretty awesome, and the sangria was bomb too. And the seating outside is awesome. It's nearly always packed when you want to go, and the service can be a little slow because of it. But really nice place to sit and chill. read more

One of my favorite go-to spots for delicious food in Astoria. Yes there's tub thumping techno music incessantly playing but there's also a crowd of people who are lounging. And not just because there's sports playing throughout the restaurant, or because the bartender is friendly (which they are), but because the food is just so darn good. My fave? Avocado crab salad and some halloumi cheese. End the night with a crepe and you'll be relaxed and loving Avenue yourself. read more
