At the risk of hipsters flocking and raising my gf's rent, Cafe 52 has become one of my go-to chill and recommendation spots. Apart from the usual Mexican faire, try the cecina tacos. It's not on the menu, I think they added it after the menus were printed. The meat is really juicy with the right amount of give. All prepared on the spindle outside for your local neighborhoodly pleasure. I don't particularly enjoy drinking at restaurants anymore, given my age and the current economy but I'll take any reason to enjoy their micheladas. It's hot sauce, not tomato, based and one of the most cohesive tasting micheladas I've ever had. I think the quality varies depending on the bartender but either way, I'm a sucker for a cool beverage and outdoor dining. It's right under the train, so be be prepared for the occasion conversation breaker but that occasional breeze in this unprecedented heat makes it worth it. read more

Cafe 52 is one of the most reliable casual restaurants in the neighborhood, with amazing no frills food, solid margaritas and friendly service (and if these aren't enough reasons, all at an amazingly reasonable price!). Every time I eat at Cafe 52 I wanna go meet the chef and thank them for the amazing meal--that's how much passion they put in their food! I did NOT expect the food to taste as good as it was. The atmosphere was giving a very local diner no frills ambiance with nothing special and it was also empty so I didn't expect much. But the quality is definitely there. The salmon eggs Benedict were very satisfying and tasted fresh. It was a little bit on the sour side though but it was still delicious and would get it again. Those shrimp and grits???? To die for. The shrimp itself was very fresh and well cooked as well. The only thing I'd say is that the cappuccino I got wasn't the best. But other than that no complaints at all. Price range isn't too bad either very reasonable. The service was very friendly, patient and attentive as well. Once my burger was ready I asked for to go box and wrapped my dinner paid and left. On another note their waiter was on the phone and didn't pay attention to the clients. Every review is multi factorial. So many things to be considered, when you know that people will be looking at the words that you were putting out into the digital universe. With this in mind, I am confident to say that Café 52 is a super solid neighborhood gem, that serves up some delicious food, albeit, in a very modest setting. My experience has been solely with breakfast and it has solely been terrific. For eight bucks you get a solid plate of food, consisting of a heaping pile of scrambled eggs, potatoes, toast and a meat of your choice. I usually swap out the potatoes for their amazing crispy hashbrowns and always ask for a side of Cholula. Yes you heard me correct, eight bucks. It's right off the steps of the 52nd St. stop on the 7 train. They're open til 10, some days later, and they have a taco window and they have Pacifico in the bottle. The avocado bacon burger is always really good, but the "large fruit bowl" isn't. That "large" bowl had one grape, one strawberry, three pineapple chunks, and two melon chunks that weren't at all sweet. I can't believe they call that a large. We also ordered the carrot cake and what was given to us was half a slice... the whole bottom of the carrot cake was missing... like they didn't bother grabbing the whole slice correctly to place on the plate, so I asked for a different slice (if I'm paying $5 for a slice, it better be a real slice, not some halved barely there slice). Order takers notes I attached to my order wasfollowed to the tea (well done bacon and not a lot of vanilla in my latte). Cafe 52 had all the makings of greatness when they first opened: It's small and quaint, has limited but decent outdoor seating, a fabulous location just across from the 52nd Street station, and a menu of diner classics with a healthy slant to it (not common for this part of the hood at the time). They were reasonably fast in delivery and the place was clean and solid for a lunch date or solo WiFi session. Then things started taking a turn for the worse: Deliveries were slower. The preparation of the food for takeout and deliveries were sloppier and generally unappetizing. Eventually the food itself began to suffer, my burgers were overly salty, breakfast plates were skimpy, mac and cheese options were bland, and the kale salad was more of a sad plate of greens than a vibrant, feel-good option. Sadly, the upkeep on the interior was taking a toll: the grimness of an open but small kitchen lead to a small film (sticky) feel to the tables and menus; the place was no longer as clean as it used to be. To make matters worse, the staff had a slight overhaul resulting in lots of incompetence which turned into messed up orders. I've begun patronizing less and less in fear of additional disappointment. I want to give them more chances to see if they fix some of the aforementioned issues. For now, the breakfast is decent and they've managed to add hashbrown patties as of last year. For the first time we ate in the restaurant for brunch on a Sunday. Usually I have just ordered take-out, but I wanted to try something new for a change. I ordered blueberry pancakes and sausage and my husband ordered one of the egg dishes that came with bacon, toast and home fries. The atmosphere was very hectic (no peace and quiet here) and the service was a tad slow, but they are making the most of the small space. The food was really good. My order came with two pancakes, and they were incredibly thick and fluffy, I don't think I'm exaggerating to say almost an inch thick in the center. I ate one and brought one home. The sausage was a single patty, thin, very flavorful and just a little too salty but good. I'm really picky about home fries because so many places put paprika on them which I can't stand but these were small red potatoes roasted and tasted super fresh! They also score points because they have soy milk for coffee, and they brewed fresh decaf for me! read more

I noticed immediately it was missing the order of fries for my nephew. I called letting them know and was told multiple times that it was packed in the bag, insinuating that I am lying. I will nickname this restaurant the sorriest "smoked turkey deli sandwich" place. I wish I took a picture. It literally had 2 thin slices of turkeys it was basically a lettuce and tomato sandwich with a dash of turkey. The service was lackluster. Waited 15 minutes just for the waitresses just to take my order. There was no one else in the restaurant. They would have gotten 4 stars from me if the service wasn't so slooooowww. It was only us (party of 2) and another table (party of 2) there on a rainy day and it took almost 30 minutes to get our food. Also, our appetizer came after our entree. Really, you may ask.... Yes, really. Anyways, besides the mediocre service, the food was actually pretty good. The French onion soup was pretty average - but it had some kind of toasted bread in it that made it delicious. The fried calamari was good, came with a lot of sauce on the side. Too bad it came after our entrees. For entrees, AZ had the ABC mini burgers that he really enjoyed. His fries were awesome, btw. I ordered the Shrimp Caesar wrap. I'm the person that hates croutons and lots of Caesar dressing in my Caesar wraps/salads, but this place got it right! My wrap was great. I loved it. I opted for the salad instead of the fries but didn't get to eat much of it cause I was stuffed. It seemed good though haha. Oh, and their coffee is pretty good, don't expect it to get refilled though. Also, this is a small diner. So small that the kitchen is right in the open and you can hear everything - every drop, every pot and pan, every dish. It's loud. No thanks. I came here and got a Cuban - my family member also got a Cuban. He asked for mayo. I just said "everything it comes with is fine." I got a completely dry sandwich - no mustard, mayo, nothing. The sandwich wasn't very good and I was not impressed. My family member got very sick from his meal...so I guess the mayo was rancid. Good thing my sandwich was dry, I guess. I won't be back. There are plenty of other restaurants to try in the area. read more

This place is a great addition to the neighborhood. The location has undergone more changes than Lil'Kim's face. Every incarnation of this place is some food joint but none of them last. I really hope that this place does because their food is actually pretty good! I've had the mini burger sliders (they have different toppings such as mushrooms, swiss cheese, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese etc). Their fries were fresh cut and were really tasty. Not greasy at all. I came back another day in search of some comfort food, and decided to get their penne alla vodka. I normally don't trust any pasta dish from a dinner but was surprised. The sauce was creamy, and they gave mushrooms with it which I didn't expect. I ordered it with grilled chicken and grilled it was. It had that nice char coal flavor that you expect from the grill but never actually get. Lastly they have Green Mountain coffee- great plus! Their coffee is always fresh which no one can complain about. If you are not into going down to New York Eats on 46th street and Queens Blvd, or doing down to Stop Inn on Roosevelt then this your next best bet. Hopefully they last at this location and I look forward to them adding Brunch which their super helpful server, Jimmy, mentioned that they are trying to add to their menu. I can't say enough about this place. I love it. It's small and very clean and they have great food. I was out on a date at another restaurant and jusr needed anything to get the terrible food taste of the other place out of my mouth and I stumbled upon this place and I was surprised, in the best way possible!! I got their guacamole-bacon burger and it was amazing and their fries are also delicious. The guacamole sauce they use on their burger is nice and tangy and slightly spicy, which makes it hyst so refreshing...I say sauce because it's a little thin but I think anything thicker would make the burger not as enjoyable. Needless to say, I came back to get the glorious burger a second time and I will probably keep going back for more. I visited once for breakfast and that was good. So I knew I had to come back for Lunch. Being that it was super cold out I had a small French onion soup and it hit the spot. Wasn't overly salty like in some places and the cheese was nice and gooey and there was even what seemed like pieces of Texas toast ! Wow. Sadly was too hungry to take a photo. Still hungry Bc I'm a fat ass, I thought id stray from typical diner food and order one of their new items the chicken Milanese torta It was basically like a Mexican Pannin on a French roll toasted with avocado lettuce tomatoes cheese and beans.
