Went to play golf. My husband isn't a golfer but wanted to ride along. I offered to pay full green fees for him but was denied because he didn't have his own set of clubs. I don't see how that is good business policy for this club to turn us away. I am one golfer willing to pay for two and had purchased some merch from the pro shop. I even opted to take a later tee time when no one booked. Either way what pushed me over the edge was how rude and condescending the lady running the pro shop was. Sad. Avila Beach is one my favorite spots, so I was excited to play at this course. I had a long drive before my tee time and ended up being 45 mins late. I called 2 hours in advance of my tee time to let them know. The person said we should be able to get into an open slot when we arrive. We did indeed get on without a long wait. The guy at the desk was friendly. We headed over to the first tee and got a cart from the line of carts in the tent area. After we got our bags and cooler in the cart, the guy sending folks off at the first hole noticed us and pretty rudely asked us "where'd you get that cart... you got a cart I haven't cleaned yet, you should have found me and asked." As if we knew where or who he was with a lot of other people around the tee box. There was only one row of clean-looking carts which seemed obvious to us. A few minutes later, I mentioned we were late, but I had let the clubhouse know in advance, etc. He was rude again with some commentary about us being late. Luckily, the tournament group ahead of us chimed in and offered to let us go ahead of them since we'd be quicker, and we were off. Overall, the course was enjoyable. Fairway conditions were slightly below average at this price point, but greens were good; pace was average; hole layouts were fun; bunkers were hard/wet; there was some chainsaw noise on a few holes; plants and wildlife were nice. For $162 total for a two-some, I would expect a bit better service and course conditions. We also felt the flow was unclear in a few places with turn-arounds or bridge crossings needed -- they should add a few more signs so it's crystal clear. The restaurant staff was friendly, but they took 20 minutes for our order of 2 hotdogs, so I would definitely recommend ordering ahead (which later noticed you can do with the QR code in the cart). The star of the day was the beverage cart lady - great attitude. She won back a star on this rating and offset the grumpster on the first tee! read more

Terrible service, starting with the pro shop. The gentleman was exceptional rude and didn't represent the business well. We had 4 golfers for the day celebrating a 50th birthday for my husband and once done with the 18 hole course they stated they would never go back. The green was not well kept, lots of sandy spots, ruts on the course and the sand traps were hard/rocky with minimal sand. Unfortunately, not only was the service terrible, but the course was less than optimal which was surprising because we were out here two years ago and service was good and the course looked much worse. Additionally, the spectator fee (the regular price of golfing) is ridiculous. Therefore wife's did not attend, which was a unwelcomed change from last time. read more

We've been playing here for 25 years and have never seen the tee boxes and greens in worst shape. Granted the fairways are showing the effects of drought conditions but more care could be given to these two important areas. I guess they are concentrating on being a music and food venue rather than staying true to their roots. Don't even bother with Golf Moose or other discount programs. The Central Coast has plenty of other courses that are well maintained and fun to play. read more

The kid handling the Golf Carts is the best thing I can say about this place. Course was not in good shape, but while on the course, we were harassed by an employee who was playing 2 groups behind us. While we waited for the group in front of us to clear, this old geezer yelled at us to hit the ball. Bet me Five Bucks I couldn't clear some tree's. After clearing, he never paid me, but began harassing the group behind us. This was an employee doing this to our group of golfers. As for the course, if you're handicap is below a 12, you won't enjoy this course. Greens were OK for a public muni, but not for what this course claims to be. The stank from the ponds was not a pleasant odor. They don't seem to inviting or friendly to guests. read more

Extremely disappointed in this course... We paid $80/person for 18 holes and ended up only playing 9 because the course was in such bad shape and not well kept. The grass is dead, the greens are choppy with dead spots, gopher holes everywhere, and the Marshall was not friendly at all. Nobody looked happy to be working there nor cared. I wish we could've seen the back 9 but not worth sticking it out. We went to Morro Bay to finish our last 9 which we should've just started there in the first place. I would not recommend this course to anyone and will never go back which is too bad. read more

The golf course is just ok Not well maintained I played hear 15 years ago however then it was taken care of now it appears that nobody cares. We teed off first thing in the morning which was supposed to be 8:00 but the first person appeared at 8:15 We also wanted a breakfast burrito however we were told the cook doesn't come in until 10 We finished #9 at 10:15 and the cook was not there yet. I read the reviews and was VERY disappointed. This conditions were that of a typical backyard muni course. Some really small greens but they were in good condition. Don't expect a resort type atmosphere where you. I had the first tee time of 645 and nobody showed up to open till 630 not even any grounds crew. The restaurant didn't open till 11am. They should not market this is a resort course. Also this is not on the beach. It goes inland the water holes are along a creek not ocean. So dont expect water views like other ocean courses. This goes in and up some hills, it's more mountain course if anything. The tee boxes for the Tips were not even mowed it was teeing off short rough. Not worth the money the're charging. read more

The site: Just past the little town of Avila Beach on the main drag is a nondescript turn into a windy road up a small hill and into a small parking lot. Unless you ask - you could miss it. The clubhouse: pretty nice. The bar and food establishment is small but covers the bet. Hard liquor is available as well as beer and wine. The food available at the turn is great and the phone number for the food is posted at the 8th hole (a nice downhill par 3) - call ahead. I didn't but you should. Driving range: Yup. Just to the right of the first hole - get the balls at the pro shop. Grass - no mats. Classy. Overall vibe: The course is set in the hills of Avila Beach - it is idyllic and pretty. Deer roam the coarse and from time to time block your shots. When you ask them to move aside, however politely you might ask, they will look at you sarcastically and eventually meander to the side. Bastards. A creek (more like a smallish river) runs throughout the course which means lots of water throughout the course to hit over. Don't even get me started... The course was dropped into the geography and not the other way around - the fairways have many turns and dips - challenging and fun. Greens and stuff: nice shape across the board. Maps: In no way do the hole maps represent the fairway in some cases and on your first trip around the track - it is surprise after surprise after surprise. The golf: I enjoyed it. Long course. Lots of fun. Not boring in the least. Take someone you like to go play. read more

If your golf course is undergoing changes or has issues that might create confusion for anyone unfamiliar with your facility, it should be mentioned at check-in or with signage. Apparently, a par three on the front nine was removed and added onto the back nine sometime in the past. GPS was useless and there were no hole diagrams on the card or on the tee signs. We found ourselves struggling with direction and yardages on several holes. I will not be back. Lunch at Mulligan's, however, was quite tasty and served by very friendly staff. read more

HA..... what a challenging golf course for a right hand player. Okay before I start complaining about how bad my golf game is. This is actually a very nice course. We bought a groupon, $200 for 4 players include a cart and some range balls. Trick is the tee time is after 11am. Remember that and you will save a lot of money. Anywah, the range is a bit run down and they are improving. The course was in excellent shape despite the drought we are experiencing. Most holes on the back 10 experience some kind of water hazard. Hole 9 and 18 are amazing holes which I really like. Given it is next to the ocean, it is windy. This course is a combination of link course and regular course. Now, all holes are dog leg left which requires you to hit draws if you are a right hand player. I can't hit draws so I was having a hard time. Lucky for my wife, she is a left hander, she had a great time with all the fade she hit. Overall the course is challenging and fun. Greens aren't too fast and they are fair. I didn't try the food at club house. This is one of the course you should play near pismo beach. read more

For almost $90/person for this golf course, it wasn't as good as we expected. The views were beautiful and amazing throughout the course; however, the grass and the greens were poorly taken care of. The golf carts are rickety and worn down. Everywhere we drove, we'd have a really bumpy ride due to the unsmooth grass and cracked paved roads. They also did not have any signs that led us to the next tees when some of the them were farther away. We had to use the map, guess, and take different directions to find the correct tee plates. It would've been nicer and easier if there were arrows along some of the paths to direct us. read more

I should update this as my past review was chosen as a "Review of the Day" and it feels extremely disingenuous to have anyone pay to play this course based on that review. The course is in terrible shape. I was able to play it recently (within the last 2 months) for free and didn't finish the course because it was that bad. Let me repeat that. I played for free, and didn't want to finish the course. The greens are missing grass and are so bad in some places that you'll just pick up. See some of the photos posted by recent Yelpers. It's bad. No ... like really bad. Imagine trying to putt on Danny Trejo's face and that should be about accurate. The tee boxes are cracked dirt with abandoned putt-putt course style tee markers. They did reverse the nines which I think will help the course when the owner puts some money into it. Speaking of which I've heard a rumor that the owner is waiting to put money into it until an upscale housing development gets approved, but for now -- AVOID AT ALL COSTS. The best course to play for the money in the area is Morro Bay. The best course that's public is Hunter Ranch. If you know a member at the SLO CC, that's by far my favorite although they just raised the Guest fee's to ~$100 so prepare to pay. read more

I'm not really a golfer. In fact, I rarely play and I'm pretty terrible so take this review with a grain of salt. I had a lot of fun on the course, but the course is way tougher than I'm used to. I lost about 8 balls after playing 18 holes. I gave up my ball donations to either the water hazards, thick brush (out of bounds), or ravines. Granted, a more seasoned player wouldn't have this problem, but even my dad, a regular golfer lost about 3 balls. I have no complaints about the service or condition of the course. All seemed fine to me. My dad paid for my round, but I know the cost and it seemed reasonable to me. But beautiful scenery and a fun day, so I'm giving them 4 stars. read more

Don't' waste your money. This is a crappy course, poorly designed and hardly maintained. The cart paths are rutted out, pot hole strewn and bone jarring to travel on. The greens are in terrible shape as well as the tee boxes, which are mostly uneven and torn up. Given what they charge per round, (a LOT) it's clear that management is just keeping the cash and not putting any back into any sort of course maintenance plan. And don't be fooled by the word "beach" in their name. This course plays no where near a beach, rather a stagnate river that cleaves the valley the course is built through, which in and of it self required the architect to create some really confounding holes. I give the place two stars because Mulligan's, their restaurant is pretty good and while they, on their own, may rate 4 stars, taken together I couldn't go above 2. As an alternative, try Morro Bay Golf Course at Morro Bay State Park. It's in much better shape and costs half as much. Monarch Dunes also offers a better value IMHO. Oh, and NO drinking water on the course and very few trash cans. read more

Called on a Friday to ensure I could sneak on as a single in the AM. I was told they were wild open. I show up at 6:45, to putt & such. Just to be told that the pro shop would open late. It sounded to me like it wasn't a unusual situation.... Finally in my cart, driving down the course just to find the pencil is so used the lead and the eraser is all used up. The seed/sand bottles were empty. Bear in mind that this is the first cart out on a Saturday morning. The cart parts are so old they will literally disconnect your internal organs if your not paying attention. The front 8, (or 9) depending on what holes they are using are,,,, querky. But you might see some deer or wild turkey. The back side is much nicer. Beach fowl, & the occasional hot jogger will pass by. But so the the gaggle of women walkers during your backswing... Bottom line, just because your next to a resort/spa, doesn't make you a resort course. There are MUCH better options..... read more
