I made a reservation for a car because I have a road trip for a wedding, they call me TWO HOURS BEFORE PICKUP and tell me they won't have a car for me. The customer service is god awful and rude. This whole operation is a scam. I have had multiple issues with them charging me for fuel services when I return it with a full tank. It sucks because there aren't a ton of options for rental cars, especially if your company requires you to use Avis. So, word of warning - proceed with caution and document everything like you're being followed. Take a video of the car when you pick it up and drop it off. Take a picture of the odometer and fuel gauge. Do not leave without a receipt in hand that is fully correct. They will not answer their phone and the central customer service hotline is BEYOND unhelpful. This place needs to be condemned. They never clean the cars very well, the parking lot is a mess, the hours on the weekends are terrible, and it is overall a bad experience. Please Avis, stop with all the crap. read more

My husband and I were planning on driving to Cape Cod on Thanksgiving and the day before we found out our car had major problems so we had to scramble to find a vehicle to rent. I stopped in to the Avis location on Bancroft and had possibly THE BEST customer experience of my life! I was able to secure a car right away (incredible since this was the day before Thanksgiving), the manager was super patient and funny and turned our stressful situation into a very pleasant one! I was given a car that smelled like smoke and the oil light came on within the first hour of driving it. After an hour of searching for a customer service number where an actual human answered the call, I was directed to go to the nearest Avis to swap out the vehicle. When I got to this location Brendon told me it's not his problem and to go elsewhere. To be fair he offered to spray deodorant in the car to cover up the cigarette smell, no thanks buddy. If yelp had a less than one star option, this place would be more than deserving. Had a reservation for a vehicle to pick up from this location and drop off to the Detroit airport on the same day. Upon arrival, Anthony, the manager who others have also complained about, informed me he had no cars available except for one that had reached its mileage limit. Okay, fine. However, he then went on to state that there was a strong odor in the car, pet hairs and dirt everywhere. Left with no choice, I accepted the car and after Anthony did a useless 5 minute cleaning, my wife and I drove it to the airport. The car had only a quarter tank of gas, and rather then fill it up, Anthony stated he would make sure to change the agreement to reflect the gas in the car. Well, of course based on his fraudulent practices that others have noted, he failed to do so and I was charged $120 upon arriving to DTW, even after filling the tank back up to where it was. I am now stuck wasting my time with useless Avis customer service trying to recoup the fraudulent fuel charge, and the location itself has been useless. If Avis was a reputable company, they would be rightfully ashamed of this pathetically run location. However, they are clearly okay with places like this tarnishing their name. Filled up the tank 2 miles prior to returning the rental and they STILL stole $107 from me. 99 bucks plus tax. PLUS the $35 I spent to fill the tank. The hoops they're making me jump thru to get my money back is RIDICULOUS. Their rep at the store even directed me to the gas station. Take your business elsewhere people. I contacted this location ready to rent a vehicle for an upcoming trip. Unfortunately they do not offer any type of pickup service. I was told onsite parking is first come, first serve and they could not guarantee a place to park my vehicle as parking is extremely limited. The gentleman at the counter was not friendly at all. I walked in the door and there was told one customer in at a time which is acceptable. It's just not posted on the front door at all. Walking back out I looked at the door and nothing is posted. Then looking at the side of the a hand written sign of one customer at a time. Was less willing to help get my vehicle checked in. And of course I didn't have my pen to fill in the jacket with necessary information (mileage, tank full) so I got the stare down. I'm just use to someone meeting at the vehicle at airports doing the look around, getting the mileage and saying printed receipt or email. Overall experience, I got the hell out of there. I called ahead and made sure they had a vehicle for me. She said they did. I show up and they had nothing for me. I paid for an SUV and she wanted to give me a standard size car and not charge me less for it. I asked if she could transfer my reservation to another location at the same price. She said yes, she could. I show up to the Toledo airport and my reservation is twice as much as intended. This lady straight lied to my face. What can I say about Avis in Ottawa Hill Ohio - and Avis in general? Let's start with the terrible customer service skills of the 8th-grade dropout who seemed to run the place. You would think someone who, at middle age, has aspired to run a ratty rent-a-car shack in the middle of nowhere Ohio would have some humility about how he carries out his work, but no. His extremely over inflated sense of self importance was only slightly overshadowed by his lack of customer service. My first experience with this lumpenproletariat (lets just call him Lump) was by phone. Lump: Hello Me: Umm...Is this Avis? Lump: Yeah Me: I have a reservation for toda... Lump: I'm here until noon. Me: Yes...like I was saying, I have a reservation booked for 10 AM today. I'm running a little late. Is that going to be a problem? Lump: I'm here until noon. Me: Oh, so it doesn't matter what time I made my reservation for? Lump: No. Me: Ok I'll... (click) Let me add here that it was never explained to me in any fashion that this location would be closed at noon. Which was only the beginning of things that were not explained to me. Meanwhile...I'm dropped off at Lump's Avis Rentals. I walk in the door with all my stuff, there is no acknowledgement from Lump or his sidekick who I'll call Delta Minus... To shorten this, I found there was a lot going wrong with my "reservation" which was given to someone else. What it boiled down to though was; I didn't have a major credit card to put down, and they would have taken nearly $400 out of my checking account for a prepaid deposit - effectively wiping out my remaining travel budget. Again, this was NEVER explained to me. Had it been, i would have happily brought my credit card or, at the very least, transferred money. Lump couldn't care less about my situation. Me: Is there anything we can do about this? I mean, I'm now stranded in Toledo. I booked this online, and was never told of this policy. Lump: Nope Me: Do you have a customer service hotline? Lump: Why? It's not going to do anything? Me: Look, do you have a customer service line or not? Lump: Why? They're are just going to tell you the same thing I am. Me: Yeah, well I'd like to talk to someone who isn't you. Get it? Lump: (very reluctantly writes down the number and throws it on the counter). Unfortunately for me, Lump was right. The Avis rep told me the exact same thing. They couldn't even take a credit card number from someone over the phone. They weren't willing to help me whatsoever, and by the time I hung up, neither could any other rental car agency in Toledo because they were all closed or had no availability. I ended up hitch-hiking with all of my luggage back to the hotel I stayed in to figure out what to do. Now, this isn't my first rodeo with the rental car industry. I've rented cars in the past. I've always used my debit card, but never have I heard of this policy. I've certainly never been left stranded, nor have I experienced the complete lack of professionalism or customer service exhibited by Lump & Avis in general. In the end, some great friends in Michigan bailed me out, and I was able to make it to my home town before flying back to CA. An online car rental should be no more complicated a matter than using the drive-through at McDonalds. So one might think. Seems Avis had other plans regarding my recent online car rental. I made a reservation roughly a week before my scheduled pick-up day and time, putting in for an economy car for a 9 day rental. My charge card was billed in full for the rental, which I initially had no problem with at all. All Avis had to do was have the car I reserved available, gassed up and ready to go when I arrived to pick it up. This is where things rapidly fell apart. I arrived at the appointed time, eager to get the car, take it home to load up my bags and start an out of town getaway. Imagine my disbelief when I learned that they didn't have an economy car for me. Imagine my disbelief when I learned that didn't have a COMPACT car for me. Imagine my further disbelief at the indifference of the rental agent when he told me there were no cars available for me at all, with the exception of an older model SUV which unlike the economy car I had reserved would likely get me only about 14 mpg. I was essentially given a take it or leave it proposition. Despite not blowing my stack, I expressly told the rental agent that since my PAID RESERVATION did not deliver on the business promise of providing anything close to what reserved, I fully expected that any and all charges to my credit card would be reversed. Bottom line, Avis accepted my reservation, accepted and processed my credit card, and DID NOT DELIVER on the rental, all while the rental agent could care less. I had to scramble frantically, but managed to wrangle a car rental from one of Avis' competitors. After returning from my getaway, I learned that Avis had not reversed the charges on my credit card. Despite a series of online communications which eventually got acknowledgement from Avis that they dropped the ball and should indeed have refunded all charges, and despite being given a time frame of 3 to 5 business days before I would have my charge account credited, here it is now an additional 7 days later and I STILL have not been refunded the amount of the failed rental. I will again be contacting their customer service department to try to get to the bottom of this fiasco, but in short, Avis has failed at every level in delivering even the most basic level of customer service. Maybe next time I should just stick with using the McDonalds drive-through. read more

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS AVIS LOCATION. Anthony, the "customer service" agent will be happy to overcharge you with additional rental time ($26.25 per additional "hour") after providing you with the WORST customer service in the world. The first thing he did when I went to pick up a one day rental was to print out the contract and then take an additional 35 minutes to provide me with a car (as he talked on the phone with another customer). Of course, the "pick up time" on the rental agreement was 35 minutes earlier than I actually received the car. When I returned the car the next day, he was able to charge me the additional hour --because I returned the car 30 minutes later than the time printed on the original contract! THIS AVIS LOCATION INTENTIONALLY LIES AND CHEATS CUSTOMERS. Naturally, Anthony was conveniently impotent and could not credit me back the over charge ("I can't change the clock."). And told me that he didn't care about losing me as a customer because "I have 500 customers a week, so I don't care if you never come back." Customer service at its finest. Anthony doesn't care about committing fraud. But then again, neither does Avis as a company. I called to explain the situation using the Avis 800 number only to talk to "supervisor Carl" who also was impotent and quickly hung up on me when I didn't want to listen to his line of crap for a second time. Made the travel out here and the morning of pick up (with less than 2 hours of notice) received a phone call saying they had no truck for me. Booked a rental for a mini van over a month before we were going on vacation taking 7 people and luggage. Day of our pick up came and we were told we couldn't have the minivan. They had 4 Caravans on the lot. They told us they overbooked for SUVs that they didn't actually have so they were going to give the vans to them. They wanted to give us a Ford Flex that would barely fit us, let alone our luggage. We were upset with this, and the store clerk got an attitude and nasty with us when we demanded that we get the van that we had reserved. Rented a car from this location on March 21, 2019. The Agent was rude and the car was dirty. Paper and a cap from someone's pop bottle was left on the floor in the front and back seat. Yet the Agent claims she vacuumed out the car. Additionally, there is some unknown sticky substance that was on the door and seat of my rental. After pointing it out to the Agent, she still did not wipe down the car. It was bad enough I had to wait in line for over 30 minutes before getting my car, but that would not have been an issue if the car was clean. Or if after pointing it out the Agent, all would have been fine if she would have tried to make it right. I should have taken the extra time and drove out to the airport to pick up a rental from there. Next time for sure. For now, guess I will go clean out my rental before hitting the road for a business trip. Not happy! read more
