WOW! I'm still dreaming about our experience at Avli. The food was fantastic, the service was great, the atmosphere was beautiful. They were also not only able to accommodate my friend's food allergies, but they went above and beyond with recommendations and different modifications for her! We ordered several mezze dishes to share among the group. The Soutzoukakia, flaming saganaki, spanakopita, and the lamb filo boukia. All of it was delicious, but the lamb filo was my favorite! I ordered the amanites pasta and it was so good. Great flavor, lots of different textures with the pasta, mushrooms and some crunch! I tried the teach me how to dance and the every seven years cocktails and absolutely loved both of them. I tried a sip of the a-gouri cocktail and that was delish too! We ended the night with the chocolate mosaic and the caldera, both absolutely amazing. What a great time! A great experience and not horribly priced for what you get either!
Had an amazing experience at Avli! I have walked by numerous times and saw the very nice patio for a couple of years and was like what is this place. Came by recently to celebrate a friends bday and the place exceeded expectations by a mile. We of course grabbed a seat on the covered part of the patio and was lucky enough to get an amazing server by the name of Jelena. She was fantastic and was so good at letting us know what the best dishes were and was quite attentive. We started out with the Octapodi which was deicious! Came accompanied oregano vinaigrette..yum! We then got the Flaming Saganaki which was literally fire! Best I've had at any Greek restaurant. Main course, I went with the Taverna Lamb Chops which comes with tasty charred vegetables. Added a side of roasted potatoes recommended by Jelena...outstanding! My friend got the Lavraki aka Branzino which she said was pretty good. Baklava ice cream was woooooo! Loved it! One of the best meals I've had in 2025! Washed this all down with some great cocktails. Dionysus Drank This was verymuch on point. A tequila cocktail that includes lime, mint, watermelon and tripe orange liqueur. Great restaurant with amazing service, delicious cuisine and terrific ambience. Love this place! Great for dates.
Very cute lively Mediterranean spot. Service was kind and attentive. Food came out super quickly as well. I had the chicken souvlaki which was pretty good. My only issue was that the chicken was both tender and dry? I really enjoyed the rice and salsa that came with the chicken though. The sauce was light and refreshing and was the perfect accompaniment to the chicken. The restaurant also serves table bread which was fine. Soft and pillowy which I like. Overall this place was fine! I just moved to Chicago and have already become a repeat customer at Avli! Went there first on a date which the restaurant was perfect for -- it's cozy, romantic and the food is well timed course by course. The first visit we had the hummus & pita which was flavorful (and the pita was warm) and then I had the chicken souvlaki which was a huge portion and left me plenty to take home. The tomato salsa on the souvlaki was delicious as well. The second time I went was just for drinks & dessert and we tried the Baklava Ice Cream which was insanely good. They have a great wine selection as well, and it's not too pricey. Both visits the service was top notch -- we actually got stuck in a massive storm the first night and the restaurant manager told us we could stay as late as we needed to wait it out. Our waitress the second time also gave great recommendations! Will absolutely be back.
My second time dining at Avli--first was at their Lincoln Park spot. Tonight was River North, and it felt like dining on a Greek island...minus the ocean view. The patio was perfect on a warm Chicago evening, and the service team made it even better. GM Christina stopped by with a warm welcome, and our server handled our group of seven with ease, keeping the evening relaxed and fun. Food highlights: * Pikilia - A trio of house spreads (tzatziki, hummus, and spicy feta) with warm pita. Great way to start. * Zucchini & Eggplant Chips - Paper-thin, lightly fried, and perfectly crisp. * Flaming Saganaki - Opa! Pan-fried cheese, theatrically lit and perfectly gooey inside with a crispy edge. * Watermelon Salad - Refreshing and vibrant, with feta and mint adding contrast. A summer standout. * Chicken Souvlaki - Tender skewers, simply seasoned and perfectly grilled. * Taverna Lamb Chops - Cooked just right, juicy inside with that char-grilled flavor. * Solomon's (Roasted Salmon) - Beautifully flaky, paired with sauces that brightened every bite. And then came dessert--truly the grand finale. We ordered nearly the entire lineup: * Baklava Ice Cream - My personal favorite. Layers of honey, nuts, and flaky pastry spun into creamy perfection. Could have gone back for seconds. * Chocolate Mosaic - Rich and decadent, a hit with the chocolate lovers. * Orange Olive Oil Cake - Light, fragrant, and not too sweet. * Ekmek - Custardy, layered, and indulgent. Honestly, the desserts may have been the highlight of the night. Small note: On a warm evening, a couple more fans on the patio and ice in the water refills would have been welcome. Overall, Avli River North nails the trifecta--atmosphere, hospitality, and food that leaves you planning your return before you've even left.

Might be my new favorite Chicago restaurant (W)ow - beautiful flowery open patio (A)mbiance - quick service, fancy (M)enu - Hands down amazing kataifi shrimp, so crunchy and juicy with a savory bed of sauce. Runner up is the branzino, not at all fishy, light and lemony. Honorable mentions to the hummus spread (three types, great deal) and the phyllo feta.
Always great service and even better food! Greek-style plates are delicious and very filling. Drinks are also unique and tasty. I love coming here in the summer and sitting on the patio. They're dog friendly, which is a plus! The interior and exterior are both beautiful and makes for a great dinner out with friends or a nice date night!
I enjoyed a mini happy hour with my 2 pups today at Avli River North.. They've been here many times. We sit outside under umbrellas on the sidewalk with ample room. Cocktails and food for happy hour are tastes of their larger plates. The drink I always go for is "Teach me to dance," vodka, tea, honey and lime. It's very mellow and tasty. The dogs love to people watch. I ordered 2 shrimp wrapped with filo, crispy on the outside but nice and juicy inside, surrounded by sauce. My last drink was the Athenian spritz. The syrup was slightly tangy and light, with everything balanced well. Service is always amazing, especially if Niko is helping you!
I will be first person to admit that I'm the type of guy who needs to escape into a mid-week happy hour when work gets stressful. Not only is Avli my favorite neighborhood happy hour spot, but also a traditional Greek establishment that feels like home to me. Personally, I have only come in for the happy hour specials, but the experience does not disappoint and has kept me coming back. As an Eastern European food connoisseur new to the Chicago area, I have carefully constructed a rating system that reflects my personal thoughts, feelings, and experience. Food 9/10 The regular menu has many offering that look incredible, but I typically just order from their happy hour menu, which offers amazing, small dishes for a great price. Below is a typical experience: Spreads (Trio: Hummus, Tzatziki, Tirokafteri): The spread come with seemingly unlimited pita triangles which are soft and perfect for dipping. If you get the trio, they let you enjoy three out of their five spreads. Their hummus offers a rich and garlicky complex with sudden hints of citrus. I wouldn't say this is a typical hummus.... It's taken to a more professional level. Their tzatziki sauce is sharp, tangy, and refreshing with a prominent cucumber complex. Everything about the tzatziki sauce is phenomenal. The tirokafteri spread is the most unique to me. Its rich and sharp notes come together in harmony through the bell pepper and the feta cheese. Greek Graviera Fries: Some of the best things in life are thin, long, and crispy... including these fries. These fries have a shape and texture that I crave but are also taken to the next level with their Greek seasoning and creamy, mayo based dipping sauce. These are perfect to snack on. Kataifi Shrimp: If you are getting 4 of these, it is cheaper to order them from their main menu (professional tip offered by our wonderful waiter). Between my fiancé and I, this is our favorite thing on the menu. The shrimp is tender and cooked to perfection, but what really makes these little devils delicious is the shredded filo on top of each shrimp. Each bite is crunchy, yet tender. When paired with the spicy mayo dipping sauce, you might be ordering a second plate. Drinks 8/10 All the happy hour cocktails are delicious and refreshing. The cocktails all are Greek inspired and extremely good for the price. I am a beer drinker, and they only offer one lager on the happy hour menu (but hey its only 5 dollars). It would be nice to see them add one stronger beer on their happy hour menu, but for the price its really difficult to complain. Atmosphere 10/10: The restaurant has a white and vibrant theme that makes you feel like you are in Greece. When the weather allows for it, they have outdoor, sidewalk seating that always looks extremely full and vibrant. The establishment looks incredible, especially for what a deal their happy hour is. Likelihood of Return 10/10: For the price, this is the best value happy hour we have found in the area. The service is great and so are the food and drinks. We've been looking for a good Greek restaurant since we got back from our first trip to Greece this spring. Avli in River North had good reviews so we decided to try, so glad we did. We had the Greek salad and the moussaka, we split it and it was enough for two. We asked for bread and they brought out some good Italian bread. I had a white crisp wine. My husband had a glass of red wine. Vicki was her Server. She was very personable and quite knowledgeable. She was from Greece, enjoyed talking to her. We will definitely try this again with friends. It also coincided with The Taste River North so we were near the band. It was quite lively. We loved it.

Avli provides excellent customer while creating an amazing modern twist to traditional Greek cuisines. The short ribs are my fav! The ambience is very inviting and welcoming. I came here with a friend after a bad week, and it completely turned around my mood. The place is well decorated and service is great, and there's a good amount of space between tables as well. It was a little chilly, but not bad. The food and drinks were very good. They give you bread with olives. The bread was great, with a crispy crust and airy center. I don't like olives, so I can't comment on those. My friend and I split the saganaki and calamari. The calamari was delicious, and the saganaki is topped with a spiced fig "compote", which was jammy and sweet, a good contrast with the cheese. The only downside there was that they didn't light the cheese at the table, which a lot of places do and I was hoping for. I got the shrimp souvlaki, which comes with a quinoa tabbouleh. The dish tasted great, especially the shrimp. My one complaint is that the quinoa is served cold, and I wish I had been told that before I got it. It was a cold night and I would have liked a hot dish. My friend got the Astakomakaronatha. I had some of it, and it was fantastic. It is linguine pasta, lobster tail, lobster bisque, and ouzo. It is pricey but delicious, and I would absolutely come back for it. We split the Chocolate Saragli for desert, and it was heaven. The cocktails were great as well, unique and strong. I stopped in to check out the happy hour at Avli and I was impressed. The value you get for the price excellent. My friend and I got the prawns, calamari & glasses of the house wines. The prawns are wrap in filo which is a phenomenal texture compliment to the prawn. I aioli used on prawn was pretty tasty as well. The calamari was probably the best I've had in a while. It was actually seasoned really well. We seat in the patio, while it's on the sidewalk it was intimate. Service was very expedient with food and drink. Amazing service, cuisine, drinks, and ambiance. I personally think their tapas and small plates are more "wow" than their mains. It's a great place for a glass of wine/mixed drink/frozen margarita and some spreads and small nibbles. The Greek fusion cuisine shines with their seafood- especially the prawns. Their pita bread and spreads are immaculate. The heated outdoor patio felt very safe and the tables are socially distanced. The price is fair for the quality, and I think this is a classic date night type of spot. Their happy house menu is also a crowd pleaser with their top dishes available at a steal of a price. read more

I think Of this as an Italian Greek fusion based on the dishes I had. Started out with the 3 spreads for appetizer.. Cod fish Dip, Eggplant Dip and spicy Feta.. all 3 were awesome but most partial to the spicy feta .. Our server whose name was something like Alexandro couldn't have been better. When we were searching for a bottle of wine, he offered to have us taste test 2 of them and choose our favorite. Nice touches like that go a long way: For dinner, had the Lobster Spaghetti and wow! Perfectly cooked noodles and delicious lobster. Highly recommend... want to try a lot more so will check out again next time in town. Also, so happy they have a nice warm outdoor area so no jacket needed while dining. read more

We loved our experience at this restaurant! They were very accommodating to our large party (originally made reservation for 10). They let us add people to the reservation in advance. I would definitely suggest making a reservation to ensure you won't have to wait. The restaurant is located pretty central in the city, so very nice location! The staff was wonderful! Our waiter was so nice, and charming. He was helpful with the menu. We were celebrating a birthday, so they were patient with our group. It seemed like a lot of staff was working so things were running pretty smooth. The vibe is Greece-like, super airy, and white everywhere with beautiful flowers. The food was delicious, and the drinks were yum! Highly recommend if you're in the area! read more
Wow this place is super cute and a perfect lunch/brunch spot to go on a date or with friends! Looks so cute, great food, and drinks! Starting with the fries I definitely recommend these! The sampler is a must, for someone who isn't a big fan of feta, enjoyed this the most it was delicious, same with the tzatziki and hummus! The eggplant dish was okay, seemed to be very garam masalaish which is not what I was expecting for this dish, so pass on this dish. Now let me tell you the best dish that I had least expectations for: the special pancakes with Nutella was amazing. Really enjoyed my dinner from here! On a lazy weekday my partner and I decided to order in from Avli and we were happy with what we ordered. We got their pork gyro sandwich meal, their chicken artisanal pita, a side basmati rice, and a side of pita. The gyro and the artisanal pita were very similar, with the key difference being the gyro came with tzatziki sauce while the pita had a spicy mayo. Also, the gyro was served as a "build-your-own" whereas the pita was already assembled. Personally, I enjoyed the chicken pita more, although I did think the tzatziki was a nice touch on the gyro. The pork in the gyro was quite fatty which was a turn-off for me, but I know other people like that so keep that in mind when ordering. Both meats were seasoned perfectly and very full of flavor. It's also worth noting that the portions are massive! Great value for your dollar. The sides were also fantastic - the pita was so fresh and pillowy! The rice was also great with a hint of lemon that accentuated its fresh flavor. All in all, would recommend Avli for Greek food! I would love to visit in person as the location and ambiance would only enhance already fantastic food! read more

We had a Saturday lunch here. When we arrived there were a lot of customers outside seating and enjoyed weekend brunch. We ordered a gyro plate, a chicken souvlaki plate and a fried calamari. But somehow the male server took my order wrong and served a roast chicken plate. But the chicken was great so it's ok after all. Each portion was very big so we couldn't finish them all. Ambiance was very nice,remind me of our trip to Mykonos islands long ago. Will come back someday. read more

Wow wow wow this place is AMAZING! I'm so happy to have another nice place to take friends when they visit the neighborhood. The patio is super cute and decorated exactly like Greece. The service is fantastic. Our server told all about the menu and the greek wines (she even let us try a couple before ordering). We ended up choosing the prawns, chicken souvlaki, lobster pasta and a bottle of the Agiorgitiko. It was way more then enough for two people. Everything was spectacular but the prawns were my favorite! Side note - they have a lot of heat lamps and tents now too so definitely don't hesitate to visit this winter! read more

We went to Avli for brunch on Saturday and it was a wonderful experience. We asked for a shaded table and they found us a perfect spot. We each got a cocktail and then shared the Pantzaria Salad and a build your own chicken gyro bowl. Our waitress was great as she let us do two sauces for the chicken bowl! Such a cute spot and will be back to try their other menus! read more
We love coming here for happy hour (especially when it's nice outside)! They have an adorable patio with some covered seating. They seem to have a bunch of heaters and some tent space for the colder Covid months. Since we've only visited for HH, we have only tried the sample spread appetizer (pick three spreads for $16) - hummus, spicy feta, and roasted eggplant served with pita or veggies. We enjoyed all of these spreads, particularly the feta one. The frozen drinks (seasonal) are also worth a try. Their service has always been great and they have plenty of veggie options- we look forward to enjoying a full meal at Avli sometime soon. read more

The food was so good it got me to write my first yelp review! I don't usually like olives, mushrooms, raw tomatoes etc so I had low expectations and only came because my friends wanted to. But this ended up being one of the best meals I've had! I really liked everything but the Greek potatoes and octopadi were my favs. The only downside was halfway through our meal the waitress mentioned it was now happy hour, and had we waited 3 minutes to order, all of the small plates would've been 1/2 off Would definitely come back again if I had one in my city! read more
I've been here three now and each time they were able to squeeze me in without a reservation including at dinner time on a Friday night or brunch on a Sunday. Very cute aesthetic. The french toast is the best french toast I've ever had. However, I didn't care much for the Mediterranean inspired dishes - not because I don't like the cuisine, the opposite in fact I just didn't think it was worth the hype. My first time trying Avli, and not only is this patio an adorable little trip to Greece, but on weekend nights you get an awesome little club experience with a dj. I'm so glad they were able to fit us on the patio on this busy Friday night because our dinner experience was so nice and fun! We started with some cocktails and the sample spreads. The cocktails were with Greek liquor but I ended up loving what I chose based off the description. The meltemi was sweet and refreshing. The spreads we chose were the tzatziki, spicy feta and the eggplant. I wasn't a huge fan of the eggplant but the others were great. The complimentary bread was soft and tasty too - better than the pita in my opinion. We also ordered the prawns and chicken souvlaki, which were both delicious. The Greek fries were definitely the best part of the souvlaki dish, but everything was delicious and flavorful. We topped off the meal with a glass of wine, which was the perfect cherry on top! Highly recommend for a fun and cute dinner on a nice day. read more

imma say some real and i really need yall to listen up. i've been to river north and on the park a ton of times starting a about a year and a half ago. it quickly became my family's favorite place. attached is a picture of how the food used to look. i would tell all my friends all about it. after about a year, every time we go back it's different. there's less and less ingredients that made it sophisticated. on the park says they have no onions, there's like no seasoning, it's just lacking in every way. im always so excited to get avli food but right now i'm sitting here eating it thinking... "this is not the same food i had." and i really don't care to order anymore because yall are so far gone from what it once was. read more
Really good restaurant with nice outdoor seating and lots of heat lamps. The food was really good, got the hummus sampler, zucchini chips, cheese appetizer (forgot the name), salad, lobster spaghetti and chicken skewers. The appetizers came out very quickly but there was a long wait to get the 2 main dishes. Overall everything was delicious and we were surprised at how low the bill came out to be! Always a good thing :) Some of the cons, we had to wait 10-15 minutes longer than reservation time which was a bit annoying but not the worst thing. The music they were playing in the outdoor tent was super loud and I had to yell just to talk to the person across from me (probably not the best idea in a COVID world). Additionally, had to wave down 3-4 different people to pay for our check but no one would take our credit card and we kept having to wait for someone else to come (honestly not sure what they were saying since the music was so loud). Finally after 10 min someone came by to take our credit cards. Overall a really good restaurant and would come again despite the slightly slow service (maybe they had to decrease number of workers due to COVID so totally understandable!). I loved my meal at Avli. Came here on a work visit and enjoyed the chicken gyros. The meat was cooked well and the flavors throughout the dish were delicious. We were seated outside on a gorgeous evening and the patio was really pretty. The wine selection was also excellent and went well with my dinner. This past Saturday evening I walked here by myself and was happily surprised that they had an available table for me! I guess I got lucky and this was my first (but not last) visit to this charming taverna. The atmosphere here at Avli is low key, inviting, friendly and completely breathtaking. The interior of the restaurant is well organized, brightly lit and designed beautifully. The outside dining was just as lovely cozy and inviting with the heating furnaces to keep everyone warm and toasty. I ordered an artisinal lamb meat burger with their homemade feta cheese spread and Greek fries with crumbled feta cheese. The burger was generously sized and the gourmet spread goes extremely well with both the burger and fries. As you are seated your server will bring you your own pitcher of water and two slices of homemade bread with Greek olives. I thought everything tasted so fresh and full of lively flavors to tease your palette. It's obvious to me that the food is prepared with love so kudos to the chef for authentic Greek cuisine. The waitstaff here is super friendly, efficient and attentive to your needs and even the manager came directly to my table to make sure I was okay. The outside set up is so beautiful and honestly the warming heaters were so hot I was able to dine outside without needing to wear my coat. I know dining outside might seem daunting in our colder winter season; but I truly felt comfortable here because the space heaters did their job! There was so much food I even brought a large portion for my canine and I to share this afternoon and she also gave Avli 5 paws up. What a delightful addition to the neighborhood! I went in the time of COVID and social distancing and had a great experience. We were seated at an outside table on Wells - we didn't have a reservation so couldn't get a spot in their charming newly built patio. Once we sat down, they wiped our table with disinfectant and brought us place settings, paper menus and their delicious bread and olives to nosh on. Everyone was wearing masks and was super friendly. My pal and I decided to share the phyllo wrapped shrimp, chickpea lentil salad and gyros plate. Everything was fantastic!! The shrimp came with a yummy paprika sauce and were SO good. The salad was refreshing and full of flavor. The fresh herbs and yogurt added a lot of interest to the salad. The gyros says 2 small pitas but it was a really generous plate with lots of crispy fries too. Great flavor of the lamb, pita, red onion and sauce. PS - I loved the paprika sauce from the shrimp dish so much that I asked for more to dip my fries in! Lovely service, delicious food and excellent portions! Definitely give this charming place a try. Reservations highly recommended! We went really early during the week and it was not crowded but by the time we left, every table was full and there was a line waiting for a table. read more

Wonderful place to go on a summer night! Their outdoor patio is beautiful and the fresh Greek food is so refreshing. We started with wine and cucumber martinis. Then had the sampler spreads platter and had the Hummus, Melitzanosalata (charred eggplant) and Tirokafteri (red pepper feta). Loved loved the Tirokafteri, I would go back just for that! For dinner we had the Spanaki salad and Watermelon salads. Highly recommend eating here, I've also eaten at their Lincoln Park location but I think this one is much better. read more

Me and my family were taking a walk in river north on a summer morning eager for something to eat. After walking past Avli you can see the ambiance of it simply from the outside, the arrangements and decor of the outdoor seating on top of the alluring smell of the cuisine was enough for us to fold. Desperately hoping they didn't operate on reservation we were already through the door. Luckily, we snagged a spot indoors with the AC. After first glance you can tell that this was very formal place, the waiters and waitresses wear dresses and ties and the plating arrangement of the chef is enough to be on the cover of a magazine. The service was great and the green cuisine was tremendous, as was expected for the price. I would not expect for a Greek restaurant in River north to be "cheap", but I will say it was a bit more expensive than it needed to be. read more
