Dined here with a coworker for lunch this week. It's a very popular spot for business lunches and tourists in the Rock Center area, so you want to make a reservation if you're coming between t12 - 2 pm. Patio dining is first come, first serve. Since it wasn't too humid out, after we checked in for our reservation, we asked to get an outdoor table. There are a good number of umbrellas but many of the tables for 2 ended up getting hit by sun, whether due to being uncovered or from it reflecting off buildings, so after changing tables once and the amount of sun getting worse, we decided to ask to go back inside. At that point, they were only able to accommodate us at a table in the lounge area right behind the hostess stand. That table ended up being OK though since they had the front door open, so it wasn't too cold and the noise level was moderate. We both decided to order off the $42 price fix menu ($45.67 after tax). We shared our apps: grilled calamari and the salmon tartare. The salmon tartare was delicious, and it went well with the complimentary basket of pita crackers they brought out when we sat. For my main, I did the fish of the day which was a branzino filet with vegetables. The fish was delicious and a good-sized portion. The vegetable & potato mix on the side had really good flavor. The desserts are petite portions which is fine for lunch. I had the strawberry cheesecake, and my colleague had the baklava. The cheesecake was fine; the baklava was much better - I tried a piece! They also gave us complimentary hummus, olives, and peppers with pita when we sat down. We both left very full. It felt like a good value. Service was very good throughout the meal. Waters were constantly refilled. Food came out quickly from the kitchen. Two different managers came by at separate times to check in on us. It's very pretty inside - bright & airy on the main level. This is my Mom's fave place to dine in NYC - and after going with her, I understand why! The patio is absolutely fabulous - an island of calm in very busy midtown. First, they have a SUPER deal if you come early - $41.95 for 3 courses, up until 4:30 pm daily! Sadly, we were running late, so we missed it and paid much higher dinner prices. APPETIZERS: When you sit down, they give you comp humus and pita, with radishes, olives and marinated red peppers. Nice to munch on. One of my fam members loves the fish soup - and it was so hot in NYC I didn't know why he wanted soup! But I'm so glad he ordered it. It was super delicious and not uncomfortable to eat on a hot day. ENTREE: We decided to order a whole fish to be filleted and grilled. They have a big selection of fresh fish on ice inside, and you can go in and choose something. It was extremely delicious - just perfectly charred. Mom would give this place 5 stars every time. She loves the service & how the gentlemen waiters are very patient as she decides what she's getting. But I'll stick with a very happy 4 for a few reasons. 1, my roasted lemon potatoes were meh and a little disappointing. 2, the bathroom situation! Only one stall on the main floor for a very busy restaurant, otherwise you're climbing a grand staircase to go on the top floor. 3, if we had come for the prix fixe early bird as mom usually does, it would have been a no-brainer 5-stars, but at regular prices I'm good at 4. We have an always liked the Madison location of Avra but have now tried this newer location a couple of times. It is very big inside, with 3 levels for seating. The lower level is quieter if that is more your vibe. From upstairs, you can look down and see the whole place, including the beautiful seafood on ice. Our food was delicious, and the cocktails were as pretty as they were tasty. If you love seafood, this is an excellent choice! read more

Avra, a Mediterranean hot spot in NYC (with a new location in Boston) While in NYC we stopped here for a snack on a busy lunch day in the heart of Rockefeller Center. The place was jammed packed with suits and ties. You can tell this is the spot for power lunches, work meetings, and after work cocktails. We found 2 seats at the bar (luckily) since the rain was coming down heavy. I could'nt believe how big this place was and how gorgeous. My eyes were gazing all around, taking in the beauty. If you follow me you know I admire decor and ambiance big time and always add it to my reviews. The bartenders are so friendly as well! We started off with 2 glasses of Assyrtiko, a popular grape variety from Santorini, Greece. We then shared their housemade Hummus and Greek Salad. Everything came out so fresh and delicious. We opted out of dessert but ended up enjoying a few more glasses of red wine this time. Everything from start to finish was spectacular. We didn't want to leave on a rainy afternoon in NYC but we had to catch our train. They do have other locations in the city so I highly recommend looking them up. Very disappointing experience at Avra on September 19. We were charged for an extra bottle of wine that we never ordered or consumed -- an additional $70 plus tax. When we pointed this out, the waiter told us he would check with the manager. I was watching him the entire time, and he never went to speak to the manager. Instead, he simply printed a corrected check and brought it back to us, with barely any apology or explanation. Mistakes can happen, but charging guests for a bottle they did not have and then handling the situation this way is extremely concerning. We are traveling across the U.S. on a business trip, and this was the first time we experienced anything like this. We simply did not expect this kind of behavior from a restaurant of Avra's reputation. Very disappointing and not the experience we expected. read more

I went here to take my colleague out to lunch during the week. Avra has a great prix fixe lunch menu during the week. For my first course I got the spreads assortment which comes with tzatziki, tarama, fava and htipiti, as well as pita bread. All the spreads were delicious! For my main course I got the lamb chops, which came with potatoes and asparagus. These lamb chops were packed with flavor and cooked beautifully. For dessert, our waiter was nice enough to give me both the small fruit plate AND the strawberry cheesecake (I had been trying to decide between the two). I was so surprised to get both, but glad I did because the strawberry cheesecake was the best I've ever had. It's the epitome of living here in Manhattan! I was not disappointed at all. As usual I enjoyed them accepting my pup with open arms. Service is very friendly and professional with our waiter never being far away. We all ordered the lunch prie fix and everything was very good. When our server would come talk to us he had to awkwardly hover to talk and was fighting for his life with the leaves. They start you off with a complimentary mezze spread. We ordered the zucchini chips (serves with a tzatziki spread in the middle which we totally didn't see), branzino, filet mignon, sides: asparagus and potatoes and finished off with the layered chocolate cake. All of it was delicious. The service was also outstanding. Such attention to detail. After eating the chips I would wipe my fingers on the napkin and one of the servers noticed. Lunch Review: Wonderful three course prefix lunch special for $38. In addition to the lunch special, you are also served a complimentary hummus plate with some crunchy pita bread. Avra offers a lot of healthy options and they do not skimp on the portions. I loved the Greek Salad and Lavraki! Everyone left full and happy with their choices. Expect the lunch to take about 1.5 - 2 hours (at least on a Saturday). They do not rush you which is appreciated. Our server was very attentive and kept our water glasses full and plates cleared.
